A fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the history and engineering of the original Mersey Tunnel. Our guides Alison and Ryan were excellent hosts informing and entertaining us for almost two hours as they led us through the labyrinth of tunnels, stairs and spooky places. This is not a tour for anyone with accessibility issues (or a fear of tunnels!) but it's well worth a visit if you don't mind climbing multiple stairs. We went on a very warm day so the coolness of the interior was very welcome, but apparently it can get quite cold, so wear something warm. Access to the tour is round the back of the tall art deco edifice called St. George's Dockway, opposite where James Street meets The Strand.

Enjoyable tour of the Queensway Tunnel and its workings, and what happens behind the scenes to keep this historic tunnel running 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Being a local who uses the tunnel frequently, it's a great eye opener. Great value and takes about 2 hours to complete the tour. Quite a few stairs to climb both up and down so be prepared if you struggle with them. Nice small history room at the beginning/end too.

If you are visiting Liverpool then the Tunnel Tours is a must visit. The tour takes about 2 hours to complete with some amazing photo opportunities.Cost was £8 per person and was well worth the money. Our guides Bill and Phil were very informative and had a great sense of humour which made the tour more enjoyable. This is an amazing feat of engineering built by hand in the 1930's.Be warned there is a lot of walking up and down steps so unfortunately if you are not good on your feet this tour wont be for you.Wear decent footwear and warm clothes. This is a 5* review for a 5* tour and comes highly recommended. If you found my review helpful and enjoyed looking at my photos then don't forget to like them.

Absolutely brilliant tour, fascinating with brilliant tour guides (Ryan and John) who had great local knowledge and did a fantastic job of sharing that knowledge for locals and tourists alike. If you get offered a trip in the lift take it: there's a lot of steps and Ryan will love you being his lift buddy. If you like quirky juxtapositions of history, architecture, feats of engineering and modern transportation with guides who genuinely love what they do it'll be the best tour you do in Liverpool. Watch out for the Liver bird eggs!

Great tour with friendly guides who were happy to answer any questions, had good senses of humour. Bring a better torch than the guides if you wanna show off lol. Thanks John and Phil

My husband & grandson (age 11) went on this tour & loved every minute of it. Guides were fantastic, so knowledgeable, plus made it so much fun too.

Excellent tour, highly recommended. Ryan and John were hilarious and very well informed. Fascinating insight into the tunnel construction, history and operation. Great to be able to get to places not accessible to the public. It's very popular so book in advance.

Really friendly tour guides, they really made the tour worthwhile with their enthusiasm and professional approach. The tour was around 2 hours long, and highly informative and entertaining. Disability access can be limited due to the age of the buildings, apart from that, I highly recommend this tour for anyone with an interest in our industrial and engineering history.

My 17 year old son and myself went on the 2 hour tunnel tour today (14/02/23). I definitely recommend this tour, it was fantastic. The 2 tour guides Billy and Phil were absolutely amazing and so much fun, they are like a comedy duo. They enjoyed getting the younger visitors involved making it so much fun for them. I am not sure about people doing this if they have mobility issues, although there are 2 lifts, there is still stairs that are unavoidable. I don't think I will drive through the Queensway Tunnel the same again after learning the history and seeing behind the scenes.

The tours for individuals are only available on some days (you should check the details before going) and we happened to go there at exactly the same time by chance on a Thurday at 5 so we could enjoy this fun trip. I felt like being a part of engineering documentary with a narrator duo who have great sense of humour. I guess they were called Ryan and Billy. Thanks again. Definitely recommended!

Had a fantastic tour for my son's 11th birthday party. Friends and family aged between 11 and 72. Alison and Ryan our guides were brilliant, kept the interest of all ages without making it too childish. Got to see the massive fans working and full "backstage" tour. The kids loved waving to the cars in the tunnel and getting them to honk and going underneath the roadway. There's lots of stairs but the kids loved that. There are some lifts in certain sections but we didn't use them.

Absolutely fantastic tour, we learnt so much, we laughed and got the exercise of all those steps. Such an amazing tour, history and construction. And Ryan and Billy are just the best tour guides ever!! They literally make the tour!! We had a fantastic afternoon thank you so much.

What a superb tour. Billy and Alison were funny, very knowledgeable and the perfect tour guides. The tour itself was really interesting and you got the opportunity to see deep within the tunnel infrastructure. Loads of history and interesting facts. A fantastic way to spend 2 hours

Such an unexpected treat! Found this tour by a poster I saw whilst walking past, and what a find it was! It’s tour that takes you deep under road tunnels in Liverpool, you get an insight in to the years of work and engineering that has taken place that normally goes unseen. The tour guides John and Jimmy (I think it was)were great, really funny and welcoming. Everyone had a great time on the tour too!

My 14 year old son and his grandparents from London went on the tour yesterday 31.05.23. They said they thoroughly enjoyed it and the tour guides Billy and Ryan were excellent at keeping them entertained for the whole two hours. Well worth a visit.

Great tour, would definitely recommend. It's maybe a bit niche, but very interesting all the same. Guides were knowledge and engaging (Alison especially). You get to see the old control room, the ventilation machinery (in action), the escape routes, the tunnel itself, the refuge points beneath the road, the old docks hidden beneath Pier Head, etc.

Great tour from start to finish. We were met by our tour guides Phil and Ryan who worked as a double act making the tour informative and funny in places but imparting information of the tunnel its history and make up. The trip is just over 2 hours and flys. There are a number of steps but lifts to parts. Well worth the visit and the price

Wonderful tour from Billy as part of the Heritage Day. We couldn’t believe that what we saw was literally under the pavement we have been walking on for decades. Well worth a visit. We bought the small booklet for £2, which explains the architectural features of the building. A must buy. Thanks again, Joy and Pain 😊

Fantastic tour and amazing value for money. It was fun and so interesting to find out about the engineering and history of the tunnel. Phil and Ryan were the best guides, they were very knowledgable and made everyone laugh and feel at ease. Would absolutely recommend.

I have been meaning to take this tour for ages and finally got round to it and it was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. The guides Ryan and Bill not only carried out a very informative tour but kept us entertained throughout. The humour was brilliant and be warned as it's in the tunnels there are a number of stairs to take (lifts available at certain points) but it's worth it. I learned so much about the tunnel systems I have passed through numerous times and I would not hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone, at £10 a ticket you get a tour and comedy show all in one. Thanks for a great day :)

John & Ryan were superb tour guides who gave a great tour of the tunnel and ventilation system to our group - a really unique experience that really takes you behind the scenes.

A wonderful informative experience with good dashing of humour by the 2 guys one was called Ryan and the other can't remember, sorry, that took us on the tour. Starting from the meeting point there are information displays and the guys are around to elaborate if needed. They will warn you there is an abundance of steps but a couple of lifts that will ease the burden of about 1/3 of them. I thought it was well worth the money and would recommend to anyone able

Great tour of the Mersey Tunnel, lots of very interesting facts along the way, a great onsite to the workings and construction of the Mersey Tunnels. Tour was run by John and Ryan, both very knowledgeable and ran the tour in an interesting but humorous way. Thanks John and Ryan.

Excellent tour of the behind the screens parts of the Birkenhead tunnel, the tour guides Billy and Alison did a fantastic job, with facts and fun, lots of stairs for the fit, lifts for the less able. The takes about an hour and 45 minutes. You even get to stand on the tunnel and see the cars racing by.

Amazing tour was a bit hesitant on going but would definitely recommend. The two tour guides where very laid back and funny. It lasts about 2hrs and don't worry about the steps there is lifts!

Such a great experience! The staff is lovely and super fun, there were laughs and jokes during the whole tour. It was also very interesting to find our the story of these tunnels and actually see all the mechanisms running. Really recommended

An amazing art deco building which belies the actual purpose of pumping clean air into the Queensway Mersey tunnel. We were met by Billy and Alison who were our tour guides. Billy was very informative and knowledgeable about all aspects of the building and processes. We visited during the heritage open day and the tour was a taster of a more in depth 2 hour tour that's available. I was unaware that this building is open all year round and we will definitely be returning for the full tour. Excellent would recommend.

We were part of the first tour to take place yesterday ‘post Covid’ - it was a fantastic experience, a real insight into some world beating engineering, made all the more enjoyable by the humour, and knowledge, of our two guides. They were GREAT. many thanks for a marvellous tour which we would recommend without hesitation - despite the stairs!
