We headed to proper pie because we love pie. It helped to have a local here - take orders online starting at 10 then you pick it up. Steak and cheese, pork, and sausage roll were all fantastic savory pies. Filling was incredible and the crust excellent. Great ratio too for those following along. The strawberry rhubarb pie was awesome and a highlight, the chocolate pecan was great too . I got a full apple pie to take home and it's gone now....so you be the judge.

Great place to get your pie fix. Their breakfast brekies, banana cream pies, coffee, and customer service is really good. The folks are lovely and remind me of home back in the bay area.

These pies are amazing! They have a good selection of savory and sweet. When I went we got the spinach feta chickpea and the smoked salmon potato leek for savory and the banana cream and another one that had almonds and pear in it. Everything was delicious!!! Definitely recommend if you're in the area.

Great food! Steak and Guinness pie was outstanding! The strawberry rhubarb pie fell a bit flat. I kind of expected a bit more. Personal preference and all. Don't get me wrong! It was good! It just tasted more like a tart strawberry pie than a true strawberry rhubarb. We try to think globally but eat and drink locally! Thanks for being fantastic Proper Pie Co.

Great pies and friendly service! Very easy to order and quick pick up. Order early in the day because some pies sell out. I had the vegan ricotta and mushroom and it was delicious- did not taste vegan!

I ordered online. The pies were pre sliced and boxed if sweet and wrapped if savory. The chocolate pecan pie was like chocolate pudding meets pecans with a flaky crust. The all star is the savory pie that was reminiscent of puff pastry with a lot of flavorful filling. It was heated when I purchased it, but I ate it at room temperature the next day. If you are ordering a savory pie and don’t want it heated when you pick up, make sure to note it in the comments. It could be nice if there were markers on the sidewalk showing a line.

I’m not really much of a pie person but this place my goodness is really really delicious! We ordered the Banana Cream, Dutch Apple, Blueberry Lemon, and the Pork & Sausage Gumbo. This place does not go stingy with their fillings. Our personal favorite was the Banana Cream. The only reason why I took off a star was because there was hair in our pie (see pic). If it wasn’t for the hair issue, it’s a 5 star. We will definitely be visiting again. 😃

Salmon, leek, and potato pie was divine! And the key lime pie is by far the best one that I have ever tried! Friendly service and freshly handmade pies. What's more to love than that!!

I was told about this place while still living in the UK so, of course, I had to try it. This was the first chance I’ve had since moving back to RVA and I was not disappointed. I had the sausage roll and it was the best I’ve tasted and I have tasted (and made) quite a few! I also had to coconut lemon pie, and wow! It was heavenly! Lemony with good but not overwhelming coconut flavor (and actual coconut bits!) with a light crust. Delicious!

Best lunch ever! I arrived at 12 Noon on a weekday just as they were opening. By 12:03pm there were a dozen people in line. THE Most delicious lamb and vegetable pie made my day!

Google maps is off by a block. Just past historic St John's Church on the same side of the street. Short and wonderfully eclectic menu of savory and sweet pies. Lighting fast service is takeout only through the Pie Hole on Broad St. Rich filling and flaky crusts... unlike anything this side of New Zealand. Street parking near the church. Worth a detour!

I want to live above this pie shop for the rest of my life. They get flakes in the vegan pastry! Both sweet and savory are fantastic (blackberry peach cobbler is a favorite) however it would be cool if there was a vegan savory option that was just dairy free- meat but no butter/milk. Totally understand why there isn't, but worth a shot. *Go here*

Awesome place with some delicious pies! Yet to have a dessert pie since I'm not to bad at making the baked treats my own self, but have definitely got the savory pies multiple times! Steak and cheese, lamb and others I can't remember. Also, a lamb pasty which was good as well. The flakeiness to the pies are pretty much perfect as is the ratio of meat "stuffing" to pie crust. For sure stop by if you're in the area!

One of my top favorite places for key lime pie. You gotta go try it out! It’s worth it. You order outside but they are super fast and friendly!

10/10 all the way through. Got the Pork Chile Verde. Crust and filling were both very very good. The walk up window is neat with the cool little microphone and speaker. Friendly staff. It’s a perfect lunch to grab while taking the pooch on a walk. This is a must visit. Multiple times if you can.

Love a savory pie, and America does not have enough bakers that specialize in savory treats! 😡 Thankfully Proper Pie has many great sweet and savory pies, especially this Butter Chicken I had on a tour. The pie crust is perfectly flakey and the fillings are very well seasoned.

Picked up some pies for lunch on our way through Richmond, but thought they were so delicious we had to turn around and get more for the road so we could have them for dinner too! Having been to the UK a few months ago, it's been hard to find a "proper" savory pie here in the US. Look no further than this gem in Richmond!

A lot of pie options from sweet to savory. We got iced coffee, strawberry rhubarb, and Buttermilk raspberry. Pie was good and coffee was good with it. They have a small window you order from but the pie came out so fast and was fresh. The ladies behind the glass were very friendly.

I found out about Proper Pie only a week before Thanksgiving. Nevertheless, once I saw the Salted Caramel Pumpkin Pie on their fall menu, I made it my personal mission to acquire one. They sold out of their Thanksgiving order pies weeks before, so I sent an email to the shop asking how I could get my hands on one. During their busiest weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, they took the time to get back to me, letting me know their holiday hours, pick-up times, and online ordering that starts at 10am the day of. The Sunday before Thanksgiving, we were able to secure two pies online to pick up later that day. I was given instructions to wrap the pies in plastic wrap and keep in the fridge until Thanksgiving day, heating them at 200F in the oven for a few minutes just before dinner. I was really pleased with all my interactions with Proper Pie employees. It’s such a pleasure supporting businesses who put so much care and enthusiasm into their work. We got the Salted Caramel Pumpkin, and the Sweet Potato Pecan. The Salted Caramel Pumpkin was my favorite - the salty sweet caramel topping added a really nice dimension of flavor and texture to the usual pumpkin. The Sweet Potato Pecan was also divine, and I liked the spin on the overlooked sweet potato pie. At the end of the day, I wanted to bring something super special and covetable to Thanksgiving dinner, and Proper Pie absolutely delivered.

Yum yum yum! I'm usually not huge on bread-y foods, but Proper Pie ended up being a ray of sunshine. I enjoyed their smoked salmon, leek, and potato pie. It was a heavy bite, but rejuvenated and replenished me after a strenuous lifting session! I love their diverse selections of both sweet and savory pies. Confident that there's an option here for everyone's snacking needs!
