It was free to go to the beach which is better than 2 other nearby state parks. Was it great? No, but it is a lake in the mountains. I am not expecting a great beach. It had good sand to build with. The lake has ropes that show where it is about 5 feet so you feel better when your kids are out swimming. Bathrooms were clean, No lifeguard. They have a nice hose to wash the sand off near the parking lot. A few of my family tried the trails and they would not have called it moderate to hard. It had one steep incline and then was easy. They have canoes you can rent. A nice fun place to spend 2 hours. It was not busy on A Friday in June. The beach also has some tree shade in the afternoon

Well maintained park and cabin. Cabin was very warm. Had central heat and fireplace. Dog friendly cabin options available. Cabin 5 has lots of stairs. Was a little challenging for our older pup. Queen bed on main floor with fold out bed available in closet. 2 twin beds upstairs. Being your own sheets and towels. Two pillows were in the room for use. Fully stocked kitchen- nice pots, pans, cooking and eating utensils, knives, bows, toaster, coffee maker, pot holders. Full size fridge. Modern bathroom. Water gets very hot. It snowed and the park rangers plowed quickly and even shoveled our stairs and porch. Trails are very nearby and marked often with the map and bright blazes. There is no WiFi in the cabin. You can get wifi at the lake house. Password is same as network name New Germany. Also WiFi at top of pink trail and middle/end of cabin loop trail.

New Germany State Park is a rare emerald gem in western Maryland. My husband and I, and our senior 'pups', stayed in an awesome cabin within the Park. Our days were filled with hiking and exploring the magnificent Hemlock forest areas, the beautiful lake, and Park grounds. We also enjoyed relaxing on the cabin's porch as the park was wonderfully tranquil. The history of the area is interesting and makes me curious about former residents - especially the owners of the sawmill. The Hemlock forest was particularly our favorite place to absorb the earthiness of nature! We hope to visit again!

Nice park little lake to swim and fish in very secluded no cellphone service had a working payphone?! Walked the creek trail to the Hemlock was a nice loop with a steady breeze. But no loop back and had to road hike back.

Nice park and campsite. There is little contact with the rangers at the campsite. The lack of check in was confusing. Just drive around until you find your campsite with a reserved tag (assuming you have a reservation). Thereโ€™s a big pond (tiny lake) to float around in and short hiking trails (we managed a 6 miler). The bathhouse was acceptably clean. Thereโ€™s zero cell service (except on a hill top along the hike). Nearby Oakland and the B&O station museum was fun to visit but most of the town was shut down on Sundays.

Beautiful park esp during fall. Was told they have nice cabins, and campsites, and trails to explore. No cell service, but a phone booth near the entrance can be used. Nice lake house with clean restrooms, shower and could be a good function room for small events. Nobody is using the lake the time we dropped by, but weโ€™ll definitely check this out next time we go to deep creek

One of Maryland's secrets, in Garrett County. Wonderful state park, like to fish, swim, boat, camp and rest on a beach? Beautiful mountains and a restful place to visit!

We love this treasure in Garrett Co only 20 mins from home. So many camping trips over the years when my husband and I were first married, and then we'd take our littles hike or swim. Known to us aa Swauger's.

Absolutely beautiful park Great hikes. The lake is beautiful We rented a canoe and caught two fish! So happy that the American volkswarding association chose this as one of their walks. It was a great part to visit I definitely want to go back to Maryland to check out more of their state parks I was presently surprised.

We were in Cabin 1 in mid December during the week. The park was vert quiet. We stayed in the cabin almost the whole time. It was as comfortable as a hotel suite. The kitchen was equipped enough for us. The cabin was surprisingly warm with baseboard heating and we used the fireplace several times. The only complaint is that it could do with a new mattress. Highly recommended as a getaway. You don't get cell service in the park which was a blessing for us, but may not be for you.

No dogs allowed in all but one camping area. The dog campground was nice, quiet, and dark! Our spot was pretty level but many are not. Other campground looked right and mostly unlevel. Bathrooms were old but totally usable. Rangers were friendly and helpful.

Great campground. Spoke to a knowledgeable ranger, Rod, about local wildlife. We were the only ones in the tent/RV campground the first night. Only inconvenience is lack of phone and internet, but we were able to survive. Wifi at lake house, which is good enough. Site 19 was a very tight fit for my trailer. The one's right across are better.

Excellent day the park!! Took the family to enjoy some time in the sun. Fun times in the lake and met very nice people out with their families. Took a walk on the White Oak trail and saw deer on our walk. It was an awesome time today. We will definitely be going back

Beautiful park, close enough to other parks for day trips. Trails are well maintained, and the campsites are nice. Always look forward to a stay here.

We stayed down the road at the Savage River State Forest camping sites, but popped up to the New Germany State Park rangers station for some information about the area and some firewood. We were pleasantly surprised to find a great little gift shop there too! Hummingbirds flitted in and out of a feeder near the ranger station, too! Very nice park, beautiful area and well maintained!

Nice lake for paddle boarding. Campgrounds. Log cabins. Lake is calm and only allows small electric boats. Nice beach for a swim. Lots of areas to picnic and BBQ.

Beautiful and peaceful. Great place to unplug. No phone reception at all, so prepare yourself mentally, especially if you have an addiction to your electronics

If there were half stars, I'd say 3.5 stars. We were guests at a wedding here so we stayed for three nights/four days. We stayed in cabin #10 and spent time in cabin #12, Tall Oaks pavilion, and the Lake House. The wedding was beautiful and scenic but the hardest part was the lack of cell service. Coordinating a big group? Bring walkie talkies. We also had a dead mouse in our cabin, but it was otherwise clean and warm. The lake house is beautiful when decorated and made for a perfect little wedding (<50 people). Pavilions with fireplaces are also very cozy and lovely. Very nice outdoor bathroom which is better than the bathrooms in the cabins or lake house. Hoping to come back and stay with more free time for hiking.

One of the BEST days out around. Great hiking trails. You can go swimming as well! There are several trails that run into each other. The sign posts are easy to see and each has a map to see where you are heading or where you'd like to go. In the summer you can paddle boat on the lake and even swim in the roped off area. There are cabins to rent and campsites. This is my favorite place to be. โค๏ธ

We had a fabulous time at New Germany State park and stayed in one of the cabins. It was clean and comfortable. Almost new dishes, pot and pans, everything in the kitchen was almost new. Bathroom was updated and clean. We loved the park and cabin so much weโ€™ve already made our reservations for next year! Highly recommend the park and cabins!

Western Maryland is gorgeous in the Fall and New Germany State Park is the perfect location to explore from. We dropped in mid-week and picked up one of only two electric sites in the park. Itโ€™s not big rig friendly ... we are 30 ft and could barely swing the back-in turn then up a steepish slope to get level access to the plug in. While we were the only campers from Tuesday to check out on Friday, every site was reserved for the weekend. Just up the road from New Germany is Big Run State Park with primitive camping at $10/night. All have fire rings and picnic tables and for us city slickers who want to sleep under a dark sky itโ€™s an awesome choice.

Trails are great, Gazebo Overlook trail is a little overgrown for a couple hundred yards. Trails are clearly marked, they also butt into each other, so you can make your hike as long or short as you want!

We love this park. Great hiking trails. Small mountain streams and a lake. Beautiful scenery, it has it all. Lake is drained now, but don't let that keep you away.
