One the absolute best BBQ places I've ever eaten at(I'm from the South.) Some of the most tender brisket you'll ever have in your life, it doesn't even need any sauce. Everything is great, including the cornbread!

Best rib joint ever!! Could not finish a full slab due to sooo much meat on the bone. All served dry rub and BBQ sauce of varying kinds and heat on the table to pick from. BBQ beans, excellent. Had the sweet potato side as well. Throw in the sweet cornbread muffin and this is a meal with plenty of leftovers. I double darn you to go and enjoy the feast.

Wow!!!! This place was phenomenal!! We ordered the catfish dinner and the combo dinner (ribs and burnt ends). Everything was incredible. The catfish was melt-in-your-mouth goodness with a gorgeous crunch. The meat was falling off the bone tender. I wanted to marry the mac and cheese, and the beans, and the mashed potatoes. Also everyone was so friendly and kind!!!

Saw a show that named them the best BBQ in Chicago so I had to try them out. The food is well worth the drive to Waukegan. Had the burnt end dinner with Mac and cheese with beans. The Mrs. had the brisket sammich with greens and beans. Everything was delicious and will definitely be making a few return visits.

Don’t snooze or you’ll lose!!! Been snoozing on Big Ed’s for years, huge mistake!!!! Best bbq in Lake County by a landslide and one of the best, if not the best, in IL. Bumpin burnt ends, boss brisket, ones of the best Mac n cheese I’ve ever had, beans you would slap yo Momma for! 6 different sauces, hot link that is on point. Full bar, super friendly people, clean and welcoming atmosphere. You cannot possibly go wrong with Big Ed’s!

I stumbled upon Big Ed’s bbq years ago when I was in the area for Six Flags. I haven’t been back until today. It is still so good! Got the full rack and the brisket with mash potatoes, mac & cheese, Tony mac and beans

I’m glad that we came here for lunch. We came hungry and left with full belly and satisfied. All six different sauces were flavorful. I would come back here again if I’m around Waukegan. Service was also friendly.

My co-workers kept raving about the food here. So I caved in and went here craving a burger. I ordered online and picked it up. When you walk inside you are overpowered by the sweet smell of BBQ. The pitmaster and staff are very warm and hospitable. The atmosphere reminded me of BBQ joints I had visited in the south. I ordered a 1/2 lbs burger with everything plus bacon and it came with fries. It didn’t disappoint whatsoever. I am now hooked on this place. If you’re ever in the Waukegan, IL area, you need to stop by and eat at this place. Two thumbs way up on this place!

I always forget to take a pic when I get food here. Some of the best Mac and cheese you can get without making it in your own kitchen. Some of the best bbq around. Have to try if you in town. Try anything. It's all good.

GO HERE!! This place is absolutely amazing and has the best BBQ I've ever had! I've traveled all over and had BBQ in many places and wow, Big Ed's just nails it! Every thing I ate was delicious! Even the cornbread muffins were amazing! Usually they're just a filler but somehow these things tasted like the main show. - the burnt ends ... 🤤 I couldn't stop eating them!!! - the brisket was also SOO good!!! Great bark and flavor, the meat was so tender and NOT chewy or fatty - Their sides are amazing!! Mac and cheese and sweet potatoes were so so good. - Lastly, they make their own BBQ sauces and all of them were just delicious. Price is also reasonable, we fed 9 people for $120 and had leftovers.

First time coming here. Staff was friendly and the food came out quick! I got the brisket sandwich which was perfectly cooked, tender, fell apart in my mouth. The fries just came out of the fryer, hot with just the right amount of salt. I also picked up the standard Mac&cheese which was okay nothing special. The place was clean but very much a bar vibe.

The rib tips were very meaty which was great and the baby back ribs were good as well. The greens and baked beans were good but the Mac n cheese was just ok. You get a sweet corn muffin which I like to put in my greens. We also got peach cobbler which was a little too greasy. The next day it had formed up and I couldn't eat it. The pound cake was pretty dense but had a good flavor.

This place is a family run business, and it shows by the way they treat all of their customers. Big Ed is doing an awesome job here. We were lucky enough to be taken care of by little Ed. Little Ed has some awesome customer skills, great personality and positive attitude for such a young man. The BBQ rib tip were a little dry for my taste, but they were still very good. The ribs were awesome, very tender and had great taste even without any BBQ sauce. They only use a dry rub and it seems to work well for them. They were very busy when I was there waiting for my ribs. Even the bar was very busy with customers having alcoholic beverages. I wish they had both wet and dry styles of BBQ. I also hope that they come up with a spicier or hot BBQ sauce and maybe even a Carolina's or Albama style mustard base BBQ sauce. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of their menu. If you're in the neighborhood please go and support this awesome family owned business.

All the comfort BBQ and street food options you can ask for. Not a bad item on the menu. These guys and gals work hard and have some of the best BBQ in Chicagoland. All the good things in life are worth waiting for, so don't be alarmed when you walk inside and see a line of 10 people or more at any given time. If you've ever had great BBQ, this is a common. 😊

Honestly the ribs and ribs tips have a class of their own. I don't know how they make this smokey crusty texture on the ribs because it is really something special. Still mind blown. Brisket and the sides were all above average. Chicken was ok. People here are all super nice. Excellent service all around.

Go to the counter. Ask the person cutting meat behind the counter what's good that day or what he/she would get. Order it and be happy. No, it's not quite Kansas City or St. Louis, but it's fantastic and probably the best BBQ you will find in Northern Illinois.

Finally made it out to Big Eds in Waukegan. Quite a hike from The Loop but well worth the trip. Ordered the burnt end dinner which comes with 2 sides. The burnt ends was generous amount and it was “reseasoned” which was unique experience. But it gave the meat a nice additional spice, not really needed as this was like meat candy. The bark was flavorful and sweet. I tried all the sauces, my personal favorite was the Memphis sauce but i also liked the hot/spicy sauce too. This is arguably some of the best burnt ends in all of the Chicagoland area. The 2 sides I chose was the baked beans and the collard greens. The baked beans was classically sweet with hearty additions of brisket and pork. Was very satisfying and complemented the meat. The greens was smoky and earthy with tons of flavor. Be careful as there may be bones in the greens, I believe they may have used neck bones for added flavor profile. Finished meal with a great key lime pie, which was tart but not overly sweet, with a hefty graham cracker crust. Again, one of the best key lime pies Ive ever had. I will need to revisit to try their other bbq (ribs looked amazing) and try that loaded mac n cheese. Outstanding ‘que!!

You don't really expect to find great BBQ in Waukegan but this place is delicious! Burnt ends dinner with coleslaw and Mac & Cheese was great and a good amount of food. Sauces then elevated the flavor to the next level! If you're in Waukegan make sure you try Big Ed's.

This place is fantastic the food the service is great I got the burger the fries yeah I know why a burger in a rib joint? I dont eat pork so I didn't want to clog up there ph lines asking a billion questions on what they had ... so figured a burger and dessert who can messed that up? The food was good. Called the next time and inquire about the the offerings they had I had beef brisket and burnt end the big ed combo dinner Mac & cheese and red skinned mashed potatoes and key lime pie .... Came back a week later with my daughter for the half yard bird Mac and cheese, candied sweet potatoes and collard greens and peach cobbler ( that are only served on sat and sun) She had a big ed combo half chicken and brisket mac and cheese, collard greens and pound cake. Everything was delicious, however a couple cons: peach cobbler. cobbler was very soggy, flavor was nice; the collard greens flavor again was there not texture tasted like can? The standout for my daughter was the beef brisket juicy chicken, pound cake mines were the chicken, beef brisket and key lime pie ... Overall the customer service and price was decent on top of them being black owned. You should go !

What can I say other than if your looking for great food served up by genuine friendly people, Big Ed's is a must stop. Just like most BBQs their Burnt Ends and Brisket 'sammiches' are never a bad choice, but they also offer fantastic pulled pork, greens, and cornbread. Plus they do not smoother the ribs with sauce, just good old-fashioned rub. You will not go wrong ordering food from here.

This place is really really good. I had the burnt ends dinner and oh my GOODNESS!!! I'm only eating burnt ends from now on 🥰🥰🥰. This is now my monthly BBQ fix when I visit my daughter. The place was packed but the service was fast considering the long line. I do recommend going early the stuff will sell out. I missed the burnt ends in my last visit but the rib tips were great too.

Brisket nachos. Consisted of tortilla chips, melted cheese, brisket, tomatoes, green onion, picked jalapeños, and sour cream. Added the "original" flavor BBQ sauce. Chips were spread on a tray, which allowed more chips to be covered in toppings. Portion size was good for 1 adult. A little bit more expensive than their other usual nachos dishes because of the brisket.

Easily my favorite bbq spot, and I’ve been to a lot of them. I’ve tried most of the menu but the ribs and catfish are my top choices. Family owned and the nicest people. Pro tip use the Kansas City sauce as your gravy for the mash potatoes, you won’t eat them without it after you try.

Big Ed’s is seriously the best BBQ in Lake County. The ribs are so succulent that you don’t need the delicious house sauces - but try them anyway! The portions are large and filling, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Big Ed and the staff are amazing! The sides are worth it on their own - Try the Lawd Ham Mercy baked beans, or the Big Tony Mac N Cheese. If they haven’t sold out already, get that key lime pie!! A little more expensive, yes, but the ingredients are fabulous and the staff is treated well. I respect Big Ed’s as much as I love eating there!

Yummy. I wish I didn't live so far away, because I would certainly be dining here more often. Great brisket served up by a very friendly staff.

This is hands down the best bbq in Lake County. I have been coming here for many years, ever since they moved from downtown Waukegan, which must have been around 2014. My buddy and I meet here somewhere between once a month and once a quarter; it is our go to. Everything is amazing. The best value is the mini sandwich trio which comes with fries and a drink for $13.99 as of the time of this writing. It is a sampling of 3 different types of meat sandwiches. All the of the sides are really good. The fries are awesome. I often don’t even get bbq, but get wings or fried shrimp instead, both of which are fantastic. With multiple (half a dozen?) bbq sauces to choose from; I go with sweet the heat every time. The desserts are an easy thing to miss. Don’t. The key lime pie is to die for, but not available all the time. The pound cake is really good too, which seems to be most consistently available. With consistent staff and fantastic food, this should be in your regular rotation. Just not right at noon when the lunch rush comes or on Monday when they close.

The atmosphere and the service made the food taste better. You could tell that the food is made with love and it's your homestyle BBQ that makes a huge difference. I definitely recommend coming to this place because of the food. The flavors and reasonable pricing, all amazing and awesome.

This place has average smoked bbq eats, like there ribs and tips. On the other side of the menu they have no quality whatsoever. The sides are mediocre, mac n cheese was nothing special and the beans were ok. They overfried the chicken on our salad and our overall experience was disappointing.

  • 5/5 Eric J. 1 year ago on Google
Big Ed's BBQ is a great spot! Welcoming friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. The Hot Links were on point and the sides were incredible. My wife had the half chicken which was wonderfully seasoned and juicy. I would highly recommend Big Ed's!

We were deciding between spots and I'm glad we came here. I was shocked they had a few local beers that were good. The catfish and rib tips were also very good. Our sides seemed to stand out also. I would recommend to a friend!

Wow. This place is incredible. I'm sad we didn't discover Big Ed's sooner, but so happy it's on our list of faves now. We ate in a bit later on a Sunday of the 4th of July holiday weekend, so they were understandably out of some items. One of the owners apologized about this to us and urged us to come back, but no apology needed! If you are selling out, that means you're doing it right! And they are indeed doing it RIGHT. We both got a half slab of ribs. When you order, they prepare the food right in front of you and I could tell the ribs were going to be amazing when he cut each rib like it was a slab of butter. The ribs were tender, meaty, smoky, and had a great slight, but perfect crisp char on the outside. We also ordered a fried catfish fillet and even as a person who doesn't love catfish, I loved their version! The batter was very tasty and cut down the gaminess that catfish is known for (without completely taking away that taste if you are a person that likes that flavor). For sides we got mac n cheese (best mac n cheese I've ever had), beans (sweet and smokey, so good), and mashed potatoes (flavorful even without any gravy or topping). Each meal comes with a cornbread muffin and omg... I'm a cornbread lover and was blown away by this muffin. It had a crispy top that I've never seen before and the muffin was a sweet, moist cornbread just how I like it. Customer service is incredible and several of the owners were working while we were there. I was sitting at our table waiting for my boyfriend to get his drink when one of the owners walked up and asked what I'd like. She then went and filled my cup for me. She didn't have to, but it's little stuff like that that shows customers that the owners truly value their customers and respect their business. They have a great assortment of sauces on the table. My favorite was the Original, but you truly can't go wrong with any of them. Looking forward to our next visit to try some others items such as the brisket, burnt ends, rib tips, and greens! Bottom line, this place is a must try!

If you don't think Chicago- particularly suburban Chicago- can have delicious BBQ, you haven't tried Big Ed's. Just a short walk away from the Marriott hotel in Waukegan, I found a friendly, family run place with some of the best BBQ anywhere. Casual, with order at the counter food and scattered tables, it managed to be still be cozy and warm. Generous portions, many choices of BBQ sauce, and good sides rounded out the delicious dry rubbed, smoked meat. Prices were reasonable for the quality and amount of food.
