The food here absolutely incredible and the best I had during my 3 months visit to Sri Lanka. I was fortunate enough to have been living just around the corner from Welle Gedara restaurant, so I was there to enjoy the home cooked food atleast twice a week. The delicious and nutritious food is made with love and care by Shan, who is the lovely gentleman who owns the place. Thank you for your hospitality and your warm energy, my friend. I hope to see you again soon if/when I return back to the incredibly beautiful Sri Lanka ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿฅฅ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ All the best, Luke ๐Ÿ’œ

Absolutely loved the experience eating here-vegan, family style dining, all the grandmothers recipe. You can tell there is passion and pride in his work. When you eat here, there are set dishes that will be served that day. Water, coconut drink and tea included. We paid 1300 per Person. They also offer daily ayuvedic cooking classes at noon, at time of writing

Where can I start? I first visited Shan's place one year ago, on my first visit and week of Sri Lanka, and never thought I would make a friend for life on that day!! Not only was I amazed by his food, and local ingredients but also his passion for cooking and for serving others. I have never met a more selfless and kind person in my life. Nishan, who is part of this beautiful family and Shan, instantly became like my own blood! Within the first week of knowing each other we went for his cousin's wedding, and after this, our story continued... After returning 6 months later, he was still the kind and hardworking person, and this time, I had the opportunity to stay in his homestay for one and a half months with my father. I was able to taste his delicious food every day, learn his recipes, heal with his medicine, but mos importantly, get full of their contagious magical energyโœจ both Nishan and Shan, opened the doors of their home, and I was truly able to see through. The love they have poured into this place, and Shan wanting to preserve his family's essence is reflected in everything he does. More than eating his food, you are healing with it. You are leaving lighter and happier from when you first arrived. You start seeing life and foods differently by just being around them. He makes all the spices himself, makes coconut milk from scratch and really is concern about only using home-grown and local products, gluten free and vegan goodness. I was fortunate enough to meet many of his customers coming to his restaurant and was so amazed about the people he attracts and their wholesome reactions ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’• If you want to feel like home and really connect, this is the place to come๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

what can I even say, this place touched my heart deeply. Shan and Nishan are part of our family now, rising souls of abundance and absolute love. The house is alive, a temple full of stories and ancestry. The food is the best we've had in our lives. Beautiful beach, animal friends. No words for how thankful we are to life to have arrived to this place that will always be precious in our hearts๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ‡ Welle Gedara, family homestay๐Ÿš

Had an amazing cooking and dining experience at the cooking class...5.30 pm start and food was done in about an hour, 15 mins. Shan is a genuine person. The kitchen is so authentic and lends for a great experience with hand squeezed coconut milk, wooden fire, earthen pots...Food was delicious, we enjoyed good conversation and a beer while cooking. Everything was SO fresh and eaten off the pot. Thanks, Shan! A fantastic cooking and eating experience.

One of my favorite experiences across all of my travels. Shan is extremely polite, welcoming, and knowledgeable. His ability to communicate the Ayurvedic properties of all ingredients and the cooking process was exceptional. The end product was absolutely delicious. To anyone coming to Welingama, a trip should not be completed without visiting Welle Gedara.

One of the best experiences in Sri Lanka! From the first moments we visited Shanโ€™s home, immediately felt his hospitality and warmth of his heart, which made us decide to experience Homestay here. During our stay we had an opportunity to see the authentic living in Sri Lanka, at his great grandparents house which is 260 years old. The house is full of history, art and love that has been passed down generation to generation. I also joined his cooking class and I could learn not only how to cook healthy tasty vegan & gluten free food but also the concept of Ayurvedic cooking and medicinal properties. He says โ€œcooking is an artโ€ and it really is an art how he prepares his food. Youโ€™ll love his food, or just watching how he cooks or his passion of cooking. His medicinal tea is also so delicious and we bought a jar of it for our travels. :) When you leave his place, you will feel healthier, more energetic and happier. Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience Shan! We will definitely come back again. ๐Ÿงก

We did an Ayurvedic cooking class here and it was beautiful. Nearly all ingredients from the chefs garden, who also foraged really special mushrooms! Not cheap but all goes to local small business and the quality of the experience, knowledge gained and food was amazing, so itโ€™s definitely worth it.

My partner and I just finished a cooking class with Shan and what a delightful experience it was! Both educational and delicious! The best food I have had on my trip to Sri Lanka. Shan cooks with such sincerity and love and you can really taste all that he pours into his cooking. I wish I could eat like this everyday. Highly recommend - it was a highlight of my trip to SL!

Lovely house with a lot of history and charm. The food is very healthy, tasty and local. The owner is sweet and he knows a lot about cooking. It is definitely the best restaurant in Waligama

Very nice and tasty place, ascetic which gives it charm. Weโ€™ve been siting inside where you feel as if you came as a guest to a local family house. All home made from own products, coconut cheese cake is definitely must have!

Must go-to-place! The previous reviews are the reason I decided to give it a go and I don't regret it for a second! The food is fresh and full of flavour; I had a special coconut/lime juice which tasted like heaven and to eat he served a green salad and dahl with spinach and perfect rotti. The food is authentic and rich with flavour, most definitely because its fresh from the garden(you are sitting in).

Some of the best meals I had in Sri Lanka, and all vegan! Shan is a lovely man, cooking with passion. There's a different dish every day โ€” I went four times and loved all the meals.

We had dinner at Shans two times and the food is absolutly fantastic! It doesn't matter if your vegan or not, you will love the place and the food. Shan is a great host. The pizza, the curry and the salad are so tasty and original. He cooks everything fresh from scratch. The homemade herbal tea was specially refreshing. You need to go if you have the possibility! Thanks Shan! Lydia & Dominik

What a lovely place and astonishing atmosphere! Although we arenโ€™t really vegan we visited Shan because of a suggestion and had thus amazing and fresh organic vegan food from his own garden - the experience he gave us is unique - Shan is a real artist! Thank you Shan for that mind blowing and very warm hospitality! We enjoyed every second! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป A must see if you visit Southern Sri Lanka ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ This is a new way of cooking experience! We come definitely again! โ€žSharing is caringโ€œ - Shanโ€˜s grandmom

This was one of my favorite spots in all Sri Lanka. Beginning with the magical front garden with tropical flora and warm lighting at night, my family stepped into the most authentic Sri Lankan restaurant experience. The combination of outstanding vegan food, warm greeting from the Chef, Shan, and the fun and lively communal dinner table made for the most enjoyable evening. Shan is an extraordinary person who instantly makes you feel like family. He learned to cook Ayurvedic/vegan food by his grandmother - what could be better than that! It was so good we returned two times more during our stay in Weligama. I guarantee you will love this place.

Some of the best food I've had in Sri lanka.Had the fixed meal here - different dinner menu every night. I had a curry/sambal/roti main, a coconut cake and a homemade tea. It is a vegan meal, made entirely from scratch. It's so flavourful. He asks you how well you tolerate spices before. The setting is in a beautiful old home. Shan is an incredible human being, with a very warm heart. Definitely recommend visiting and supporting this local business. PS he has a homestay as well. Very large room with breakfast and lunch included. He also still has a cooking course you can book up until 6hrs before the anticipated start.
