I'd been meaning to visit this place for a while, but getting out to the suburbs of Long Island from Manhattan is a trek. Luckily, I finally got to see it on a nice day and arrived just in time for a fantastic tour. The tour guide was very entertaining and knew his stuff, and the house is in great condition. A highlight was seeing the lilac tree that grew "in the dooryard" and could be seen out the window right over Whitman's childhood bed. I didn't spend much time at the museum, as it was mostly stuff to read, but it was set up nicely and they had a few cool things, like a book signed by Whitman and a first edition Leaves of Grass, plus a fun gift shop. I highly recommend visiting this place if you're a fan of Walt Whitman!

A little hidden gem that's great for a relaxed visit. The interpretive center is very informative and well laid out. The staff is knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. The house tour was just the right length. I hadn't been there in many years despite having grown up in the area and it was very pleasant and we spent about 2 hours there at an enjoyable pace.

Well-maintained New York State historic site. Walt Whitman Jr. was born here and lived here until he was 4, before moving to Brooklyn. There are a couple artifacts from that time and original pieces on display. They also have art program there. The guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. You can park next to the house (about a dozen spaces) or along the side street.

It’s a really cool Historic Site to check out. The tour is really informative. The interpretation center has great information and a fantastic gift shop to grab a text to read. Beautiful site worth all the time to enjoy you could spare.

Stopped in on a whim during a motorcycle ride since I've never been there. Glad I did. The tour was very informative and enjoyable. Our guide Iris was excellent and it was very interesting to see the home preserved to the way things were in the past. I highly recommend visiting.

Great place for kids, teens and adults alike - interested in the literary arts and history. The grounds are amazing. To see where someone in history spent their time, shared with family and loved ones, and the actual works shared is also what makes the experiences there very special. They also host and provide other programs free and/or at cost to the public and private guests. Walt Whitman Birthplace is a must visit.

It's right across the street from the only thing most Islanders know about the great Whitman, a mall bearing his name-which he'd roll over in his grave if he knew about. Yet, far too few people even know about this place. Learn about our history-visit the Man's home

Everyone owes it to themselves to visit The Walt Whitman Birthplace because Whitman is the father of American Poetry allowing all of us the freedom of free verse and beyond. There are many, many programs to enjoy year long. Hiking in the area where he walked, too. Promise me you will use the internet today to see what's happening at The Walt Whitman Birthplace and plan a visit soon!

The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association does an exceptional job of brining the place and the poet to vibrant life for its visitors. While Whitman only lived in Huntington Station during the first four years of his life, the influence of his birthplace and his first formative years is clearly on display.

I recently discovered this charming little hidden gem, perfect for a leisurely visit. The interpretive center is impressively informative and well-organized. What really stood out was the staff – they were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly warm and welcoming. The house tour struck a perfect balance in length. It had been years since my last visit, despite living in the area, but I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was. We spent a good two hours there, exploring at a relaxed and enjoyable pace. Highly recommend for a delightful experience!

Excellent museum guide! We arrived late but she went over the missing sections of the house at the end of the tour. Interesting details give you insight into the life of the family and the house at the time. Highly recommended.

I had a wonderful time at Walt Whitman’s birthplace! There was a wealth of information provided both by text and by the extremely helpful and informative staff. In particular, Iris was fantastic, having given me a brilliant and interesting tour of the house itself. I would highly recommend going, especially if you’re a Walt Whitman fan!

Walt Whitman Birthplace is a fantastic place to learn about the early life of America's greatest poets. I interned there in college and I returned for curatorial experience. A truly fascinating place to explore the historical record.

This is a really cool place to check out but can be easily missed since the sign is a little inconspious. The admission for the tour is $8, Barbara, my tour guide was super friendly and shared many great details of Mr. Whitman's life. The tour of the house where Mr. Whitman was born was definitely worth it, and the "visiting center" gave great detail of Mr. Whitman's life. There was also a giftshop but unfortunately I was pressed for time and had to leave before I had a chance to check it out. Would love to bring family and friends back.

Was advertised as donations optional to enter. But in actuality, there's an $8 per person admission charge. Considering the size of the grounds, $2 per person would be more reasonable. #ripoff

Received an excellent one-to-one tour of the house. The guide was amazingly informative. Wish I had arrived earlier than a half-hour before closing so I would have had more time in the Interpretive Center.

O Whitman, my Whitman! Our tourist trip is done! Across the street, I hear American shopping, exchanging varied Leaves of Cash for perfumes (I breathe the fragrance myself and know it and like it). This birthplace is large and contains multitudes, camerado...

When I worked at 110 Walt Whitman Rd, nearby (at Timely Organization in 1972-3) this was a pleasant place to eat lunch. There is an amazing amount of history on Long Island, and this is one location of many interesting ones. As I have not visited since then, it appears to have become much more commercialized. There may have been a library (private?) hère then or a room full of books, but that is not in evidence from the photos.... memory of that is unreliable, sorry to say. There is a county park that is nearby which was once an estate. Many surprisingly historic places in the NY Metro area are mentioned in Jennet Conant’s book « Tuxedo Park ».

I remember my first time stepping foot into the Whitman Birthplace and how magical a feeling it is to get to visit where Whitman was born. The interactive exhibit space is so well done and such an inviting space. I highly recommend visiting Whitman's farmhouse, the interactive exhibit, and taking a stroll outside. Also, there are so many virtual events happening right now with the Birthplace so please check out their YouTube channel.

Seems like a great place, sadly the cashier was abrupt and unwelcoming. Didn’t allow up space to make the decision to stay for a tour. Feeling uncomfortable our party left, hope to try again next time we are in town.

Tiny museum which requires a house tour. A lot of history but too little information about Walt. They have parking lot but it can be closed for no explanation. My expectations were not meeting. Not good for visiting if they host same events.
