Tackapausha Museum and Preserve

Tourist attraction Museum of zoology

👍👍 Quiet and quaint, super affordable and just the right amount of time to keep a little one busy, not overwhelm them! The day we visited the staff was so helpful and friendly and took animals out for us to (gently) pet. This is not a zoo so dont expect large animals but there are plenty of amphibians... People often mention animals, kids, staff, great, museum, Great, play, friendly, small, birds,

Quiet and quaint, super affordable and just the right amount of time to keep a little one busy, not overwhelm them! The day we visited the staff was so helpful and friendly and took animals out for us to (gently) pet. This is not a zoo so dont expect large animals but there are plenty of amphibians, birds, a bunny, the resident possum, bald eagle owls etc. The nature walk is nice to the pond, where there are geese and ducks. Don't skip the outdoor play area! it may not be fancy but there is a ton of stuff for a nauture loving kid to do (tree stumps, little bridge, xylophone. Butterfly prop photo op. We loved it it's a really wonderful place to keep preserved in the community.

I’m actually pretty shocked by the reviews here to be honest. I am no animal activist by any means but really was shocked by the size and quality of the enclosures. The birds inside are practically in the dark and look so desperate to escape. There’s not a single live plant in any of those enclosures! Most heart breaking of all is the Eagle enclosure, what a sad existence that poor thing has. It would be much cooler if this was a rehab and release program or a temporary place for the animals before going to real sanctuaries. This place really is disappointing and I hope that more feel this way so it changes

It's small but that makes it perfect for a quick trip with the kids. They have a few foxes, hawks, eagles and other birds. They also have a small natural history museum. While we were there there was a fennix fox they let run around. The kids loved it! Even though it was cold and wet the day we went the kids still enjoyed the outdoor play section as well.

Really great small museum and animal spot. Awesome for kids. Great exhibits for the history and environment that is covered. Highly suggest as a quick stop.

Quaint little museum and preserve. Noble effort as a conservatory for injured birds. Good to take a break from the daily usual. Took us about an hour to explore all of it.

Great museum, friendly staff! I got to see a rescued fennec fox up close and personal! All the birds and animals here are rescued. The staff here do a great job at keeping the museum clean. Very informational galleries set up inside the museum. A great place to visit if you have an hour to kill! Odd to say this but I found this museum small and cozy. Will definitely visit again.

This place is the best, take your friends and family, your loved ones, your kids especially. I have been going here since I was even a kid in the 80s. .Great place to learn about evolution, the history of Long Island, dinosaurs. See rescued animals and even all types of raptors like bald eagles. Turtles, fish, the place is so clean and safe even in this covid age. There is even and outdoor play area. My son who is on the spectrum loves this place, my typical daughter loves learning about all the different types of fish and rescued foxes and bats. Visit today and join their facebook page for events!

Wonderful small museum that's got something for adults and kids of all ages. History, nature, live animals to see up close and learn about with naturalists, rescue birds of prey, outdoor play area and indoor dinosaur play nest.

A small and charmingly run nature preserve with some kid-friendly exhibits, spaces for rescued animals and at least one daily up-close demonstration with nature ambassadors (during our visit, they were barn owls and a rather large king snake). Because they are locally run and focused on rehabilitation, the schedules can be a bit "flexible"--don't go expecting a perfectly timed tour or show. But if you have a soft spot for animals and spaces off the beaten path then Tackapausha is perfect for you. *I can't speak to the quality of the trails or paths because my family visit was too short to allow for a walk. Oh well!

Awesome place to visit and to bring young children. They have live animals to see and pet. There is an outdoor area for kids to be outdoors and play. I went with friends and kids and they had alot of fun. It is also very inexpensive. Enjoy!!

Right now, I dont recommend being on the trails. They are overgrown, large branches down, flooded areas; generally dangerous as nd impassable in some areas. A few spots are fine but the overgrowth is a serious tick danger. I'd pass.

Wonderful experience today visiting this museum. My husband and I took our 2 year old and he absolutely loved it! The staff was beyond friendly and the exhibits were great. Although it was cold today our son could not get enough of the sandbox in the outdoor play area. We will absolutely be going back!

I really liked this place. I wasn't sure what to expect. It's not tremendous, but they keep it very clean and there's a variety of stuff to see and learn about. It's not expensive at all. We were more than happy to pay a small admission that most likely keeps the tenants fed and cared for. Oh... can't forget, the people are really great.

Had a birthday party here. Staff was great, so helpful and knowledgeable, made it a smooth birthday party. Kids and parents had a blast. Staff kept the the kids entertained and their attention. Kids ranged from 5 to 11 years old.

Trails need to be widened. Would make it easier to walk here, right now its too overgrown. When I ran here, the trails were wider and had wood chips/ soft footing. Not suitable for running anymore, too boggy in spots and some parts of the trail consist of wooden plank walkways.

My entire childhood was spent walking to Tackapausha. It is the best. Do not let the bad reviews stop you from going. I miss the way it was before some updates, but staying in the past is where some of us wish to be. Love it here!

Super friendly and fun place. The staff even took out the opossum for us to meet! They shared a lot of fun facts about her, which was so fun. My only concern is the use of reptile carpets (they harbor bacteria, not super safe) and it looked like they had two ball pythons in one tank, which can cause stress and competition for resources.

The museum has seen better days and needs updating but it's worth a visit to get your kid out of the house. If you have kids under 9 this is a great animal adventure for under 10$/piece. Plenty of parking and Also a great location for a child's Bday party. We were able to pet a ferret, possum, rabbit and some reptiles. They have an open play area outside in the back with plenty of room to play in.

This place is a massive scam. These are not rescues animals, they are someone’s secret pets and they want you to pay for more of them! They were stolen from their homes in the wild and bought for big bucks on the internet. Do not support this place!

A short / lovely activity. Can see many hawks & owls up close - and other animals (changing exhibits). There are Pokémon figurines hidden amongst the exhibits on local wildlife that capture children’s attention.

Loved it here! Had a fundraiser for window to support and has a great time meeting up with other wildlife photographers around the island, anything to help our island and wildlife.

  • 5/5 Michelle L. 3 years ago on Google
I love this place! The trail is very nice and the wildlife center is cute too, although they have limited staff and thus limited hours. I have never gone on a full tour of anything, but I have looked at their birds and other rehabilitated/recovering animals. Good opportunity for kids and people who just want to walk someplace nice. There is a big parking lot and when the building is open, there are bathrooms. Outside, there is seating room.

My personal experience was almost four decades ago and i am so happy to hear this place is still up and running in our digital age. Every chance we could pester my mom to take us we would go. I think without this esrly and up close interactions with animals i would not have the respect i do for all animals great and small. Thank you to the staff and supporters for keeping such a grest resource operating.

Amazing for younger children, however there isn't much for adults to do there, so you may find yourself bored within 20 minutes. The staff is great. They are kind and enthusiastic.

I love this place. Staff are always friendly and helpful and there's neat stuff to see. Great way to kill a Summer afternoon if you're bored at home with the kids. Keep an eye out for their special programs which are always a treat. We went to their Father's Day program and my daughter got to pet a Fennec Fox. Thanks to everyone there for all their good work.

Really cannot recommend this place enough!!! They are so wonderful, and they are so dedicated to teaching childrena and adults about wildlife and the care that goes into wildlife. I've actually found myself learning a lot when I take my nephew, and everyone that works there is so willing to teach and show everyone the animals and show off the hard work they have done to take care of everything. They are so excellent and knowledgable, and just the sweetest people I have ever interacted with. I only wish I could go there more often than I already do, just to support them more! It's only 5 dollars for adults, and 3 dollars for kids, and they often have shows or movies playing for kids and adults alike to learn things. They also have an outdoor play area with all natural play things for kids to learn about nature. They also have so many animals, more than I ever thought they would have. They have done such a good job taking care of the museum and I really hope everyone supports this wonderful museum!

Surprisingly great. Our family had a great time after randomly stopping in to see what it was. Small, but very relaxed, the staff is friendly, the exhibits and animals are interesting. We were lucky enough to be there when there were feedings going on, it was awesome to see up close. Worth every penny of the relatively small entrance fee. We'll be back before too long.
