Wonderful experience. We have drove by a couple of times and wasn't sure why there were so many people there at what I assumed was just a pond, but after our trip to the LI Museum we stopped by and glad we did. The preserve was beautiful and we hiked the trails and took in all the beauty and wildlife. We met a ranger there who took the time to explain the history and acreage of the preserve and gave us the tip of the secondary parking lot which we'll be sure to utilize next time to avoid the parking issues at front when it's crowded. There was also a local musician who played and sang while we enjoyed our stroll and watched the geese and ducks. Will definitely by coming back more often.

Beautiful park with lots of trails. Well maintained grounds. The park is dog on a leash friendly. Plenty of street parking or you can park at the mall just down the road from it. There are no restrooms. My dog and I can't wait to go back!

Excellent place to visit. No entry fee and lots of parking space by the road. Nice lake with a very clean shore where you can sit back and watch the swimming birds. The track runs just by the lake - very easy walk upwards. Stop by the frog pond and enjoy the calm. One short walk from there leads to the Prometheus sculpture. Follow any of the trails from there and enjoy nature as long as wish. I’ll go back many times.

A cute little park in the Stony Brook with boardwalk, ponds interesting sculptures and a well marked trails. The park has two parts – a smaller section near the Stony brook down town is essentially a regular garden with paved trails, flower beds, sculptures, cascades and ponds. Very pretty and children-friendly, but, alas was very overcrowded on Saturday. The second section is bigger, with well-marked, dirt-packed trails that goes through meadows and old very open forest. Easy walk and less crowded. The park is pet-friendly. We have seen many people with dogs

Easy well maintained trails. Great for families. Directional post can be a bit confusing. We had to back track a few times but it was not a deal breaker, we got more steps in. The sculptures along the trails were a treat.

Avalon Park is a great spot for an easy hike/walk in the woods you can do anything in the park.🙃👅😋I was thoroughly impressed that there's a great (and free!) park like this hidden on Long Island. The website directed us to park our car on the street, and we luckily found a spot right away. The boardwalk entrance is currently closed for construction so we just followed a line of people walking towards Rhododendron Drive, and eventually found the entrance to the red trail. This did involve a bit of walking on a trafficked road, so just be careful and look out for cars. The section that we walked around was more forest than park. We mostly stayed on the yellow trail, which was doable for my parents who are not the most exercise-inclined people. There were some gentle slopes and stairs here and there, but overall easy enough for me to walk in sandals (which I definitely do not recommend - my feet kicked up a ton of dirt). It was surprisingly quite secluded for most of our hour-long walk, although many of the people we did see were not wearing masks. I'd love to come back here once the boardwalk construction is done, and in the fall for the foliage.

Avalon Park & Preserve is magical! I am visiting the area for 9/11, so stress levels are high. This was the perfect place to go in Stony Brook, New York to rejuvenate and be at one with nature. The thoughtfulness and design of the preserve made me feel so peaceful and happy. Parking is easy and free, and entrance is also no charge, so it is accessible to everyone. The trails are well marked and maintained. There is signage warning of ticks, and we stayed on the main trails where we enjoyed almost 4 miles of hiking including a little extra going to the farm stand at Birdsfoot Farm that is owned by Avalon. The place feels safe as there are cameras and nowhere is so remote that you are completely on your own. There was at least one water fountain there, and it included a bowl for pets. We saw several sweet dogs along the trail, as well as kind humans including some friendly park people who do such a beautiful job making sure the park is safe and well-maintained. It was not at all crowded, and the park is spacious. We also saw a beautiful young deer who seemed to know that we meant no harm, so she just stood there and looked at us as we looked at her. It was a very special moment! Some of my favorite elements of the park were the Cartas al Cielo sphere and the Labyrinth. At the Cartas al Cielo, there are postcards where you can write something to those who have passed. The sign says, "Visitors are encouraged to send messages beyond our earthly realm, mailing them through this poetic vessel." At the Labyrinth, there is a beautiful tribute to Paul Simons, dedicating the park and preserve to his memory, and a spectacular sculpture by Jod Laurie. Every part of the preserve was wonderful. There is a duck pond and a frog pond near the entrance, a hilltop meadow at the top, and lots of cool things in between. There are no restrooms at the preserve, no picnic areas, and no trash cans. Everything is carry in and carry out. Their motto is Protect, Restore, Inspire...and that is absolutely perfect! I highly recommend this lovely sanctuary.

Beautiful park. When my "baby dog" was alive he LOVED this place, you never saw a dog more excited to take a stroll through the woods as this little guy was. The sights and sounds area tranquil. It's a quiet park even on the weekends. Most people stay by the duck pond feeding the ducks so the trails are very quiet. The park is large enough to find a quiet space to picnic or to just stroll on your own. Keep in mind there are NO public bathrooms here.

A beautiful, spacious nature preserve with a old water mill that you can tour. Buying a pound of duck feed and sitting by the pond while feeding all the geese and ducks is by far my favourite thing to do. Many people bring their dogs and there's lots of trails with different sights to see. Definitely a good idea for a relaxing Sunday stroll.

Beautiful! Imagine that someone said, build a beautiful trail that is well marked, has beautiful natural and naturalized planting and there you have it….Avalon, just touching the Stony Brook Grist Mill. A wonderful walk of most any length that is well maintained. It’s a nice walk, up and down some topography. Enjoy!!

We had a wonderful time walking through Avalon Nature Preserve! We took some nice pictures and saw lots of wildlife. We brought some food and drinks in with us but also brought our own garbage bag to bring our garbage out with us. They do not have garbages there to try and keep the area clean of garbage piling up. They don't encourage food so if you bring anything in please take it with you to keep it clean for others. It's such a beautiful place and we look forward to visiting again! 💗

I absolutely love visiting Avalon Park and the duck pond. it is a great serene environment to just hang out with the family and enjoy nature. it's a great place for a picnic or a hike. you can go to the pizza place / deli across the street and purchase some feed for the ducks.

It's wonderful what they did with the trail system. Today we were greeted by dear and many birds. We saw Turtles on a branch and many beautiful flowers.

Semi large park. Clean and well taken care of. You can find parking on the side or somewhere else...I couldn't find the other parking lot. Very scenic, you can picnic. If you bring stuff in you must bring it out. There are no bathrooms around , the only con, but I get it. This park has alot foot traffic, small children, ppl walking thier dogs, nature groups and couples.

Great park with several miles of hiking trails near Stony Brook Village. Very well maintained trails that are both kid and pet friendly. Easy terrain with mostly level ground shaded by the trees. A great spot to view local wildlife- lots of deer, rabbits, chipmunks, birds etc. In July the flower fields peak and are truly a sight to behold. There are also a few unique sitting areas tucked away in the flower fields that are perfect to just sit and soak it all in. Definitely recommend!
