Mahesh is famous for the oldest rathyatra festival of West Bengal. It is the second oldest in the world after Puri. 'Mahesh er Rathyatra' is one of the renowned activities which introduces Hooghly as a famous place. The Rathyatra of Mahesh is as old as 627 years. A populous fair is held on every rathyatra utsab. It stays for 3-4 weeks. People visit there from different places. There are no religious boundaries between the people who visited there. At Rathyatra utsab the great 'Rath' is brought in the road with large ropes in which Lord Jagannath Balaram and Subhadra are reside. After 8 days in 'Ulto Rath' the 'Rath' again comes back from Jagannath dev's 'Masir Bari' to the temple. People visit here to touch the rope for blessings and the place is being chanted with 'Jay Jagannath'. This place is easily accessible. Anyone can visit this place by auto or toto from Shrirampur station. Transportation facilities are good and the location is very busy. But inside the temple the situation is totally opposite. The temple is very pleasant and a good place for meditation. Here is a long veranda with hanging lanterns from where people could see the idol of Lord Jagannath Balaram and Subhadra.

The Rathayatra of Mahesh (Bengali: মাহেশের রথযাত্রা) is the second oldest chariot festival or Rath Yatra in India (after Rath Yatra of Puri) and oldest in Bengal, having been celebrated since 1396. It is held in Mahesh, a historical locality within Serampore in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a week-long festival and a grand fair is held at that time. People throng to have a share in pulling the long ropes (Rosshi) attached to the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balarama and Subhadra on the journey from the temple to Mahesh Gundicha Bari (or, Masir Bari) and back within 8th day.

Mahesh is a residential area and historical part of the city of Serampore, in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the site of a 14th-century temple of Jagannath, and the Rathayatra of Mahesh, which first took place in 1397, is the second oldest in India.

The Jagannath Mandir of Sripat Mahesh is nearly 700 years old. A great Saint Dhrubananda Bramhachari once went Puri dham at Odhisa with the desire to feed Anna Bhog (Prasad made from Rice) Lord Jagannath Jiu cooked by himself. But the Pujaris and Pandas (sebayits who serve lord) didn't allow that. The Pandas beat Dhrubananda and through him out from the temple. Dhrubananda started crying and complaining to the Almighty for his desire with out taken food and one drop of water for three days at the entrance gate of Sri Kshetra Puri. After 3 days Lord Jagannath appeared in front of Dhrubananda and asked him to return to Bengal and wait at the bank of Mata Ganga at Shrirampur, where Lord will appear to Him as 'Daru Bramhan'. After years of deep meditation at the bank of Ganges a 'Neem' (Azadirachta Indica) wood came to Him and Dhrubananda got the dream of Lord Jagannath to build the Jagannath Murti (Idol) from this wood and worship and offer Anna Bhog to the deities. This the Jagannath Mandir of Mahesh consecrated. After years of service to God, Dhrubananda suffered for his age and thinks how the service of Sri Jagannath, Sri Balabhadra, and Mata Subhadra will be maintained after his demise. And prayed to Lord Chaitanya Mahaprovu when He visited the Mandir. Mahaprovu asked one of his close Devotee Sri Kamlakar Piplai to take charge of service of Lord and Dhrubananda. Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprovu when came here to have Darshan of Sri Sri Jagannath Dev He named the place as #NabaNilachal...Thus the Mahesh Sripat is created "The Naba Nilachal' or 'Newly born Puri Kshetra'. The present temple renovated by a great man "Nayanchand Mullick" of Kolkata 150 years back. At the time of Rathyatra lakhs of devotees from all sects and casts from the different parts of country. The state government of West Bengal now creating this place as a "Tirtha Kshetra" all the amenities of a great Tirtha Kshetra will be available here.

A place where serenity blends with you to provide a positive energy. Where the Lord Jagannath reside, where the peace reside- Mahesh Temple holds a historical value on its own. With the recent renovation this 650+ year temple got more grandeur. Thus, the immense popularity of this place needs no explanation.

More than 600 years old, the second largest temple in Asia has a long history. After Puri, the Rath Yatra here is the most famous in India, the chariot is kept on the side of the road not far from the temple. We went there around 4 pm, we saw free prasads (khichuri, labrar torkari and payesh) being served here on salpatas, we think this arrangement is there throughout the year. At last I want to say that although the structure of the temple is not grandiose, the importance of the temple lies in its tradition.

It just completed 600 years. The temple has a wonderful vibe and is very clean and well maintained. The famous Rath of Mahesh is just outside the temple on G. T. Road.

Yesterday I visited mahesh lord Jagannath temple. It is said to be the second largest (after Puri) temple. The g.t road was narrow and crowed, when I was passing though near Rishra there was some electrical work going on, hence that much around 200 meter stretch road was one side blocked hence causing traffic congestion, otherwise rest of the drive was smooth, ( though we planned to travel in the afternoon between 3 to 3:30p. There is no specific place dedicated for parking but a small piece of land where we parked our car. A small board regarding charges was taken may be for bike 30 and car 50’ per hours (where this charge incurred by the temple authority or locals, we had no idea) though no one was there to ask for parking charges that day. We reached around 4-ish, temple was closed. We waited for the priest to come. Though we wait till 4:45pm and we have to left the place as we had to drive back home early. We was told the Laha Prasad is served from 12 to 3 here but you must to enter you name/ heads (ticket) here in the morning. One the way back to home we waited near 100 years old sweet shop named ‘Hazra’, we eat jilebi and naru (a sweet made of coconut and jaggery). Food was so pure in taste it’s reminds me those childhood ages. This kindly of jilebi you only get at north Kolkata and outskirts, There is one more famous sweet outlet the Felu Modok, at Rishra area, this time we unable to explore it tasty sweets (as unknowingly we left it behind).

The place of Jagannatha, Subhadra and Balaram. It's in Srerampore. Near to Rishra beside GT road. After crossing Sandhya Bazar you will get Mahesh from Howrah side. From Sheorafuli side after crossing Srerampore Electric Office you will get the ground of Mahesh. There is now a Big Gate. Beside the gate there is the great 3storied Rath. Behind the ground there is ,"Sanghar". Now the temple is remodeled and organised. Beside the main mandir there are three Shiva temples inside the mandir ground. In front of the gate of the mandir there are two "garur" statues to welcome you. During Rathajatra there is a huge fair. This fair continues up to 3-4 weeks. But the weight of the fair is now diminishing. You can get about Mahesh in the story of Saratchandra Chattopadhyay.
