Sorrel Pesto Rice Bowl / brown rice, sorrel pesto, preserved lemon, hot sauce, watermelon radish, sheep feta, poached egg - 5 🌟! Brioche toast with rainbow jam spread - 5 🌟! Sqrl is a hip, fun brunch style place in a little area on Vermont Ave with other trendy spots close by. Like the ramen and bagel place, they always are busy. I finally had my chance to stop by, and I was very happy with my experience. Their sorrel pesto bowl is their most popular item, and that was what I tried. And I get why it is so popular. It is so so good! I was blown away by the taste and quality of each ingredient and was very happy with the dish. I wasn't sure when I'd get back again and wanted to try the jams. I was having trouble deciding, so the counter lady let me know they offer a rainbow spread just for people like me who can't just choose one. Sadly, I forgot which four were offered, but I remember really liking all four. Sqrl is a great spot for locals or for foodies who want to explore all that LA has to offer. The parking is a bit tricky and the line can get long but it is worth it.

How to fairly rate this place, not sure. Service was just okay. The Islander sandwich was delicious and since I added the extra bacon, was even better. The 3 jam toast was good, not out of this world but warrants the purchase. Now here's the issue, found a hair in the container of the toast. I have a shaved head so it's obviously not mine. Brought this up to the server, he apologized and offered me a pastry and I declined. So as good as the sandwich was, how can I rate them the 4 stars I would have given them without the unpleasant find? Also irritating because I tipped before hand which is its own issue that restaurants with 'pay first' counters need to address. A hair, bug, debris, etc automatically merrits a 1 star in my assessment but I really liked the food. It's both unfair to sqirl and to myself that this was the experience I got during my visit when so many have given this place such praise. 2 stars is valid and I give sqirl this rating reluctantly.

Loved the cozy place and outdoor seatings as well as the small shop. The avocado toast was great. I loved the carrots on it - definitely a different touch. Staff were also friendly 🥇

As they brought out my Salmon Sorrel Rice breakfast, I could smell the fresh ingredients. The taste was amazing. The mix of tastes - salmon, feta, brocollini, rice - was prepared to perfection. We also got Brioche with 3 daily jams. Sweet and heavenly. The staff was great, friendly, welcoming. We will definitely be back. By the way, their market next door has fun stuff.

Don’t get fooled by the presentation of the food looks appetizing but it wasn’t all the great. The salad was all bad the lettuce was already pinkies brown.

I was in LA for a day to get an international visa. Sqirl was on the list to try the famed ricotta toast. It didn't disappoint! Thick brioche topped with pillowy whipped ricotta - so rich but the jams give it a nice sweet kick. I don't recall it being an option, but it would also be great drizzled with some EVOO. I'd make a return the next time I'm in LA.

This is our first stop whenever we are in LA. We love the fresh ingredients and the bakery is just Divine. Have tried many items from their menu and they never disappoint. Most recently the salmon rice bowl and the morning breakfast sammie both really hit the spot!

Love the ambience and food! Although busy, the line moved fast and we were able to get a seat after we placed our order. Everything from the kitchen looks really good. Will for sure to return and try other items on the menu!

Huge amount of menu options and they all seem delicious! Great drip coffee too! They are usually busy. Tables located outside some space inside. Some people do bring laptops for work. Recommend this place for some fresh, quality, tasty food.

Order at the counter door on the left and grab a seat or order takeout at the pantry door on the right. There’s always a few specials on the board as well. All time favorite is the Salmon Sorrel Rice. It’s a fixation at this point. Their new coffee drink in the photo features a most incredible made-from-scratch-with-expensive-tasting-vanilla syrup. I usually like my coffee black but this was a delightful cold treat. Some of the staff are nice, others are grouchy. They’re doing the whole “we work somewhere cool” thing so don’t take it personally. Enjoy!

Visited twice and both times were very pleasant experience! The stuffed French toast is amazing!! It's warm and soft inside, but a little crispy on the outside. Their jam makes the flavor reallyyyy good. It's the best French toast I've ever had in my life (seriously🙌🏼) Make sure you try it when coming here! The salmon sorrel rice with kale is great, too. The lemon and cheese make the flavor rich and special. The portion of their meals are also very appropriate. Avocado toast was also different than others' avocado toast. I love their creativity and how well they are when mixing different ingredients together, which makes their dishes unique and delicious. Coffee is okay though, I probably won't order their coffee next time. Staffs are friendly. You order at the counter and then find your table to seat. Overall: highly recommend to everyone! 💛

Service was pretty abysmal, unfortunately. We ordered to go and ended up waiting 50 minutes to get our order. In my opinion, customers should be told when it'll take a long-time for the order to be ready. We asked for an update about 35 minutes in and we're simply told, it's just coming out now. There's no way our order took 15 minutes to make. We would have preferred honesty. When the food was brought to us, the bag felt quite light and thankfully I checked. It turns out our Avocado Toast was missing. I had to go find a staff member and said they would take care of it right away. Fast forward another 10 minutes and our order was brought to us again. Nobody apologized or made any effort to right the wrong. The Rainbow Ricotta Toast was delicious but definitely not worth the wait. The Avocado Toast that Sqirl would have forgotten to serve me was also solid but didn't have much Avocado (despite the menu stating "now with more avocado"). It really seems that Sqirl has been overrun because of its trendy status and is suffering from the volume of orders they have to serve. Would love for them to show me they care and prove me wrong.

Fun eclectic brunch spot. Great brunch sweet and savory options. The GF buckwheat pancakes are just okay. Was hoping for something delightful. The crispy rice was delightful. Great use of rice and avocado.

The food here is creative and absolutely delicious! I honestly have no better way to describe how scrumptious the chocolate croissant and the salted rye chocolate chip cookie was. The eggs were cooked to perfection and their breads are so loaded with flavor you will be content to eat them with nothing on them.

AMAZING!!! Such a delicious, creative, and quirky brunch place! Even starting with the drinks, they were very unique. The red juice was very unique and I can see an audience for it, though I am personally not a fan of the spicy ginger taste. However, I LOVED the strawberry matcha even though I am usually not the biggest matcha person. They serve it starting with matcha on top and strawberry milk on the bottom, and even sipping just the pure matcha layer the flavor is so strong and fresh you can’t not love it. Then you mix with the strawberry milk layer below and the whole drink has a lovely sweet earthy flavor. Also cannot rave enough about their donut of the day. When we went it was a citrusy donut with lemon/orange flavored icing, a donut hole in the middle, topped with dried orange slices and clementines and flowers. The texture of the donut was so light and fluffy and the icing was sweet but not overpowering. When sally met sally was also quite good. I really liked the texture of the bread, which had an abundance of nuts and even quinoa. When we went they were out of lox, but it was still good. The thick cut brioche bun was excellent on the special BLT was so good; the baked goods are really excellent here. Sorrel pesto bowl was also good but not as amazing as the other dishes despite being one of the Sqirl classic dishes. Line was not too long either! Would come back.

Ok so, here’s my hot take. I can see why people are obsessed, I think I just messed up my ordering the bowl/salad. Wasn’t my vibe but can’t deny that people love it. Will have to come back and try other stuff on the menu, which I am very much looking forward to. People TRIP over the bacon- doesn’t do it for me, but that’s what’s beautiful about food, people have diff experiences and taste. Appreciate the good services friendliness and vibe.

This place is a VIBE and I’m here for it! The Veg Stock Sandwich is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten - the perfect hearty, toasted bread, tahini and a dressed shredded vegetables YUM! The Pumpkin Spice Latte is in a league of its own - so much so it almost shouldn’t share a name with the over commercialized version - it’s heaven! I got mine with oat milk and coconut whip on the barista’s recommendation and it was worth it! Love everything about this place and will be back to shop the market next time!

Sqirl is one of LA’s best brunch spots. With a diverse menu filled with unique dishes, you can’t go wrong here. We have been coming here for years and our favorites are the famous ricotta toast with jam, porridge, and sorrel pesto rice bowl. Stop by on a weekend and you’ll probably see a celebrity or two here. This is the spot to be for brunch!

Phenomenal food. The photos on the menu were a huge help to help us order. We got the Sorrel Pesto rice and “Vegan Coconut Tapioca Dried Fruit & Seed Bowl”. We also added fresh fruit to the tapioca bowl. IMO this lifted the dish to another level of excellence. We wish we had room to have the “Famed Ricotta Toast”, but I guess that will be for next time. Their coffee is pretty great as well.

I didn’t know what to order, and the server told me they were most famous for their ricotta toast and jam so that’s what I ordered. I got all four of the daily jams, which I think were boysenberry, apricot, passionfruit and strawberry rose. Amazing I was able to eat half in the restaurant and took half home for later.

The avocado toast with the carrots on top and the sorrel rice bowl with the poached egg were very tasty! I usually make avocado toast at home with avocados I buy from the Mexican store so I never order it when I go out. But it was highly recommended so I went with it. The rice bowl was something I never had before and it was full of flavor despite looking plain. We also got the jam toast because my bf wanted the jams. It was basic to me, but he loved it. Very expensive breakfast, but worth giving a try at least once! Kinda daydreaming about the rice bowl every now and then...

Used to be good. Refused to go back for a long time after the mold scandal and my disgust of the owner but decided to give it a try again because I was in the area. Food has gone way down hill, affirmatively average at best. Also nickel and dime for everything now, hot sauce used to come with the hash, when I asked for hot sauce after the hash came without it, they said I could get some if I went it paid for it $0.50… it was good in 2013, as of 2021, it is mediocre at best.

Menu is extensive and every little quirky/hipster detail is described - a little bit hard to choose! You have to order first at the counter and not many seats are available, so it's better for smaller parties. Shop next door has interesting items. But in the end, to what matters, coffee is amazing and food is pretty good as well!

Incredible breakfast food for vegans and meat eaters alike. For a savory breakfast you can’t go wrong with one of their bowls. If you’re into sweet breakfast and haven’t been before, you should get the classic ricotta toast with their homemade jam. If you want to be extra fancy you can get it “rainbow” and pick 3 of any of their freshly made jams to adorn your hearty slab of brioche toast. Their lattes are very good as well, however, if you get the bakers latte you have to drink it fast or else all the ghee kindof pools at the top which isn’t so pleasant. I will definitely be back - this is one of my go to spots for a coffee catchup or for visitors. Just to note, most of the seating is outdoors so if it’s wintertime bring a jacket.

The food photos looked amazing and the menu was extensive but it was a little too big and overwhelming for someone who came hungry. So I guess that could be a pro or a con. Everything sounded so good. We settled on the buckwheat pancake, the ricotta toast to share, and had the Sorrell rice bowl and crispy fried rice and the hash. They were all good overall and definitely had flavor and a unique touch to it but it was a bit on the pricier side for the portion sizes, also the rice bowls were a bit on the saltier side. The pancake was good, but pricy for just that one. The hash was also good but not out of the ball park to the point we’d say it’s 5 stars. All the food tasted good, but it wasn’t amazing. I wouldn’t say this place is a must visit — so hence the three stars, if you have interest going somewhere else I’d recommend going some where else. But if you’re looking for a cafe for a quick lunch and don’t care about the experience of the dine in, this would be a good option. The seating was also limited. Parking can be tricky.

Hands down my new breakfast destination whenever I'm in LA. In addition to playing great music and having an overall unpretentious vibe, this place is winning at everything (at least the stuff I ordered). - great coffee (black) served with a little pot to keep my refill warm. - New School was killer! Perfect soft scrambled eggs, amazing flavor, and silky with slight texture. The green sauce on the side was so tasty! Maybe tomatoes and pickled jalapenos? My first time having rugbrød toast, hearty and flavorful, nice pairing with the eggs and ham. The ham! Thinly sliced and fried so it was like crispy bacon in some area. 🤤 Even the side salad (shu greens) was something to be remembered, fresh greens of all kinds with a light vinaigrette that had complexity. Maybe dill or pepper or fennel? Wish I could try more things on the menu! Took home a blueberry lemon tart with a layer of poppyseeds on the bottom, great balance of sweet and tart. And the pistachio raspberry cake, very decadent and pistachio forward for sure. SQIRL is worth the stop even if it's a little out of the way.

Got the “Sally not Sally” which was really good, simple but fresh, good quality ingredients. The famous brioche with rainbow jelly, though, was not to our taste as much. We tough the jams were too sweet and the brioche lacked crunchiness. Their bakery is really good, I bought some bread and olive oil after my meal.

Food and drinks are superb. One of the best coffee in LA. The French toast was exceptional but you do have to wait 30 minutes to be ready. It’s a giant portion!

Innovative menu, warm and efficient service, and a comprehensive dedication to quality across the board. The 42.5-hour brioche french toast (see photo) now occupies the top of my lifetime french toast leaderboard. Sqirl was a destination restaurant for me as a visitor to L.A. and I wish I could have taken the place home with me when I had to leave town.

Short review: underwhelmed. If you're coming here because of the hype and you really love food and are doing an LA food tour ... No need to come here . But this is your choice . Long review: I wouldn't post a review like this for a mom and pop place with just a few reviews. But, they're physically small But I expected much more than what I was given and there's this big part of me that's still irked about my famed ricotta toast and ginger and lemon tea. After visiting, i took it to Instagram to ask my followers if I did something wrong with my order if I was supposed to order eggs or something. They said the service is usually bad here, I had really great service and everyone was kind (5 stars for that) and the food is underwhelming and it's just a hipster scene (but all of LA feels like a hipster scene ) The atmosphere was generic and chill, gave them 5 for that. What should have tipped me off was the fact that there was no line at this establishment and there were crazy long lines elsewhere. But I've always wanted to have breakfast here. For over $20 I got some brioche that was underwhelming, I love ricotta cheese and there was definitely too much of it and the jams were good but I didn't have to drive 15 minutes out of my way before heading to the airport. My ginger lemon tea actually burned my mouth. I wasn't sure if they put way too much lemon or they used a store-bought lemon juice. I tasted no ginger.

Absolutely delicious, well crafted food. Some of the best eggs I've ever had (New School), with delicious fried ham. Kept me full all day. Chicory coffee with their homemade almond milk was a treat. Check this place out.

I ordered Sorrel Pesto rice and it was very delicious if you like rice. The whole dish just works together. The mango smoothie was a little bitter and I wouldn’t order it again, but the orange juice was so fresh. I would definitely recommend this place as long as it’s not busy because they don’t have a lot of tables.

We couldn’t have asked for a more flavourful and luxurious breakfast. We were graciously welcomed and guided in our meal choices by the lovely Jane. The French toast’s butter-browned crust had a crème brûlée quality and the sorrel salmon dish was lush and beautifully plated.

Nice little breakfast/brunch spot! 🍳 We tried this place on a Sunday morning around 10 and there was barely any wait (the line got longer right after though so come early). The staff is lovely and super helpful (it was my first time so I had tons of questions). I tried what they recommended which was the sorrel pesto rice (half and half) + their famed ricotta toast (you can make it a 🌈 with 3 different kinds of jam or just pick one - they make their ricotta and jam in house). The ricotta toast was massive and definitely more of an item to share. Really good too! 🍞🍓 I was a bit disappointed by the sorrel rice which is supposed to be their highlight: it was good but it was really nothing out of the ordinary. 🍚🥬 I believe they have more interesting things on their menu so I’d like to try them out next time🍴 They also have pastries and bread (I have to say their baguette looked fabulous 🥖) and other products with fun packaging.
