Please see the owners response below. My original review is still in quotes. If the barriers were placed there to cover up an oil slick good on them. I'm keeping the original review here for others that may have seen this photo circulating online. This was not my photo. "Imagine having the gall to block a bike lane with your sign. Disgusting behavior from the management."

Had a nice Guinness pour from Dead Poet plus a couple decent other beers in the Poet Pilsner and Ebb Kolsch. All in all a nice place to meet locals and out of towners alike. Barmen were really good at what they do that made the good atmosphere that much better. Pour one out for the Dead Poet!

The Dead Poet is an awesome place to grab a low key beer (probably make it a Guinness, keep reading) on the UWS. The walls are adorned with, well, dead poets and prose, but there's a poetry to the bar itself too. An entire wall is set up backward so that it looks forward through the massive mirror you'll face when you sit at the bar. What can I say I'm a fan of subtlety. Also, the more Guinness you drink the closer you'll get to having your name on the wall. Some folks have had 500, 1000, even over 5000 Guinness pints here. I understand why.

Great Irish pub! Super cozy, great atmosphere, many TVs if you’re looking for a place to watch sports and great beer selection! If you get hungry, they have popcorns or hot dogs for $2! Definitely coming back.

So nice seeing Josh back behind the bar after a 10 year hiatus, such a nice, solid person! And as always, it is a so much fun hanging out at a true neighborhood spot!

Cool place! And you get 2 free drinks (for yourself only) on your birthday if you share a birthday with one of the famous writers on their Instagram. Very cozy. No food other than hotdogs and popcorn though.

Went here a few times and will go again! Very unique atmosphere and good coktails. They don't serve food, but you can bring your own. Guinness here is very good too. Additional plus, you can use the phone and play your music.

Small irish bar. I wouldn’t recommend getting a cocktail just stick to the beers. Good for a date night.. not with a group of friends.

Best nightlife vibes on the Upper West. Only popcorn and dogs are available, but both are solid offerings. Railcar narrow, so be prepared to sidle to the bathroom. Bartenders are quick, personable, skilled, and accommodating. If you're out late in the area, it's not to be missed.

Second time visiting, this time we came a little earlier because we were in the area and loved it so much our first visit. The drinks are really creative and everyone on the staff is always friendly, later visits are perfect for a bar night, however maybe because of the time we were visiting this occasion the food selection wasn't much.

The name of the bar along with the cocktail names are so creative! The drinks are delicious, they have like a juke box app you can use to choose your own music— the staff loved everything we choose! Everyone was so laid back and very open minded. Such a cool bar

Favorite bar in NYC. While it’s definitely small, all the staff have huge personalities and are always happy to talk. Great cocktail menu, but even better house beer. Hard to find a seat, which is a good thing as it’s always crowded in here. They even have some small bites to help keep you going.

The Dead Poet has great prices on draft beers and has a super welcoming vibe. Plus, you can get a hot dog for cheap. Hell yeah!

Good drinks. Hot dogs are a great drunk food. The fact that they cook them behind the bar makes it that much better

I loved sitting at the bar and seeing the wide variety of liquors on the shelf. the music/ambiance was great and the cocktails were delicious. the bartenders knew the names of all regulars which was nice to see. would come back for a quick drink again.

Its a great place to know new people, relax and enjoy a beer or a glass of wine. I tried one of the cocktails, is was ok. The wine was delicious, i tried the cabernet.

Visiting New York and walking around the upper west side when we walked past this place. It was cold so popped in for a hot whiskey and we are so glad we did (ended up having two!!). Nice small bar. Other reviews mention it being small but that only adds to its charm. Local people having drinks and chatting with friendly staff. I am heading back to New York with friends for St Patrick’s day and already looking forward to revisiting this place.

We stopped here after the American Museum of Natural History because we needed a drink ASAP! It was the perfect place to grab a beer and watch some football. Bartender was friendly and it felt very hometown-like. Their mixed drinks were refreshing and great.

Have always enjoyed visiting The Dead Poet. There is always a good collection of beers (bottle and on tap) and a very nice vibe. Last time I tried putting songs on the jukebox with the app. It was "fun". One recommendation: just make couple of pop corns every now and then even if no one has ordered. When we were there someone ordered and the smell was so tempting that many followed up. I'm sure your sales will go up, that smell was irresistible.

Love it, can't wait to return. Sweetest guys working here. Guinness on tap, Smithwicks on tap. Delicious. Brought our own dinner and sat out front. Pros: Great service and clean. BYO dinner! Cons: Smells like cleaning supplies when you walk in, and toilet doesn't flush.
