I have to say, based on the reviews I saw beforehand, my expectations were high and sadly they were not met when it came to the food. Both of our mains (the ravioli and the steak ) were very average and underwhelming. Not to mention the portion size was incredibly small for what we paid. I could get over that if the quality was above par, but I've seriously made store bought ravioli and pasta sauce that tasted better. However, the chocolate panna cotta was amazing as was the service from EVERYONE at the restaurant. I would definitely go back, but just for dessert.

I love spending time here happened to be the day I first saw the physical copy of my amazing book. I absolutely love it ❤️ I love my amazing book and photoshoot here. A beautiful memory. Five Keys of Self Love - How to Be Your Magical Self and Live Your Joyful Life. Available on Amazon. For the food here, I like the lobster entree, the broccoli, the scallop. I like the friendly staff.

Came to this place because of the book written by Daniel Meyer in hospitality strategy. Very good service and food for this price in the city. We would like to visit back again.

Amazing location and good food! The cafe has a small menu with carefully selected meal options for a brunch/lunch meal. Went with a small group. Service was slow but friendly, appetizers arrived quick and entrees much slower which was annoying. However food itself was delicious. Their salads are great, loved the burrata and the brussel sprouts. The burger was the best entree, along with the thin fries. For a healthier option the trout is the way to go, full of greens on top. Overall a nice place. Prices are high.

Union Square Cafe is a modern American restaurant that delivers an exceptional dining experience. The attentive and friendly staff work harmoniously, ensuring guests feel pampered throughout the evening. The server's knowledge of the menu is impressive, guiding diners to delightful choices, while the non-alcoholic drink selection is top-notch. The spacious multi-level layout accommodates private events, adding to the restaurant's appeal. The highlight of the evening was the perfectly cooked duck breast entrée, making Union Square Cafe a must-visit gem for anyone seeking a memorable culinary journey.

Long standing New York favorite with a posh professional waitstaff. Craft cocktails, and a sturdy wine list. Alas, the kitchen seems to still be trying to regain its footing post-pandemic. The pasta dishes our party had were unbelievably salty ruining the rest of a somewhat mediocre meal. For such a vanguard of the multi decade New York restaurant revolution, I can only hope that a steady hand returns to rescue the kitchen soon before nostalgia as a motivation to visit fades away.

We were seated at 515pm without reservation in the busy holiday season by a very friendly head waiter. She gave us the table until 7pm. Just the time we needed. Our server was very nice, friendly and warm. Mackerel and broccoli for starters, both exquisite. Chicken, trout and rigatoni with rabbit ragu for mains, all three super tasty, well prepared and filling. We shared an order of potatoes for the trout and chicken, that was more than enough and we even took . The tiramisu dessert was nothing less than sensationally good. Summary: excellent high end comfort food in a friendly, classic setting. The vibe of the place feels local and less touristy or stressed than similar places in the area. Will come back many times.

(Edited after a another visit, see below) 1. Food was so good - I've been here before and it's consistently so. However, the server we had wasn't friendly at all and was pretty terrible. We had some older bald guy. The people who came to bring our food or refill our water we're great, so still tipped 20% in hopes the tips are shared. But can't say our waiter deserved it. Before I start on the food, the apple cake is a must if you're getting dessert! I don't even like apple desserts, but this is the exception. The AGNOLOTTI AI GIRASOLE is amazing and the Butter-Poached Lobster is decent. Scallop for the app (just a single one) is decent and the fingerling potatoes were great. Edit: 2. Gave Union Square Cafe another try recently and I was blown away! The team took extra care to ensure our experience was going well and the server has great recommendations for our drinks. The diver scallop this time was cooked most perfectly and may have been the best I've had, with great color and still managing to melt in my mouth. They had an interesting cold, citrusy shrimp appetizer special that was fun and their pasta dishes are so consistently delicious! Only little thing was the side of fingerling potatoes weren't too hot this time around - they were too big, not as crispy, and a bit undercooked. But meh, we quickly forgot about it with everything else tasting so good. Did I mention their apple cake is a must try?!

Had lunch here with a friend for the first time and it was lovely experience. The decor, the lighting and the service were all great. Not to mention our server William was incredible and very knowledgeable about all the menu items. He recommended the “something essential drink” when I had no idea what I wanted and it was one of the best drinks I’ve had in a while - also a very pretty drink. I also had the bib salad, burger and apple cake, all so delicious 😋

Tried this popular restaurant during the busy Saturday brunch time recommended by AMEX card offer. Waited a little bit longer even with Resy reservation. Expecting to have some duck dishes but that is not for the brunch time. Then we were offered two complimentary appetizers. The food and vibe was very good. The tiramisu is just amazing by the way.

A classy restaurant with a rich history, it was the perfect place for an office birthday. My colleague and I were spoiled with lunch in the City...a gourmet black angus beef burger grilled to medium-well perfection washed down with a fresh cucumber, jalapeño, cilantro cocktail was just to my taste. I tasted the gazpacho as well, delicious.

Good vibes and good service. Got French toast, pasta, donuts, and the shrimp soup. The shrimp soup was a little too salty but everything else was amazing. Came here for a birthday but they put Congratulations on the plate instead which was cute hahah. Will come back to try the rest :)

Our reviews had over 14 million views in the first 7 months of 2022. We do not get paid we just love to eat and have fun. We really loved Union Square Cafe. We were greeted by Ian the Manager or host who was very helpful. Because we were dressed up he gave us a lovely booth which was upstairs. Great location to eat. Mira was our server. She has been there for years and did a wonderful job of describing almost every dish on the menu. Started off with crispy soft shell crab which was perfect, large and juicy with a lovely sauce. She had the fried soft Fares' Shrimp Croquettes which are only there for a month as part of their special program. She loved them and did not share them!!!!! For dinner we shared 3 pastas. The bucatini Siculi with tomatoes and Raisins, (yes RAISINS in pasta) which was surprisingly great. We had the 4 cheese ravioli which was lighter than it looks but really good and really cheesy. We also had the Mafaldine all'anatra which was awesome. We had the "regular" portions which are huge. You can upgrade to the "entrée portion" for $10 more but we advise you to get the "regular" portions but just order more of them so you can taste all they have to offer. We had 3 desserts. All were awesome. Again she did not share hers, that is how good it was. She had the Apricot Sundae and the Strawberry pavlova. I had the Panna Cotta. All were really really good. I had expresso which was full flavored. Check out all of our reviews. If we do not like it we do no review it so all of the ones you see are places that are fantastic. Follow us if you like. We had over 7 million views in 2021, over 14 million views in the first 7 months of 2022 and we thank you for that. We don't get paid, we just love to eat. Be sure to click on "RobH" at the top of this review to see all of them and to follow us if you like good food and FUN. we will be back again soon.

Incredible food and service. Tonight we had tomato heirloom salad some pasta dishes, halibut, carrots, potatoes and a sundae dessert with cherries. The bread was absolutely phenomenal with the butter. We wouldn't let the waiter take it away. This was a highly recommended place to eat.

Staff is professional, the food is a bit pricey for the size and portion and they have a limited variety of food types. Their pasta is very good. Desserts are excellent. Need reservations on most days, but you will enjoy it.

It is relatively easy to find delicious food in NYC, but imparting the type of service that Ali gave is far less common and made our time at Union Square Cafe memorable. My wife and I celebrated our two year anniversary at Union Square Cafe. The food was delicious and the service was the best we have had. We never really understood the value of great service on the experience of eating out. Our server Ali was attentive, warm, had good recommendations, made us feel welcome and made us want to return. He retrieved a more comfortable chair for my 8 month pregnant wife, explained items on the menu, made sure to tailor recommendations based on what we liked, checked in on us and made sure when attending to others that we didn't feel forgotten.

I recently visited for my birthday and I enjoyed the experience. Pros: - The meatballs while bite size were very good - The arctic char was very good and it was a good size - The shaved cheese on the Bibb salad shown was very tasty - The cookie while I didn't look so appealing tasted really good - The indoor seating is really cool and well designed. - The Brussel sprout salad was the best salad I have ever had Cons: - The pink cauliflower did not look good at all and did not taste good. - The octopus did not have any taste - The Bolognese was average Overall: 4 stars

It’s an honestly lackluster experience. Sure it has ok food but it lacked sophistication and was quintessentially boring American. Lacking a central theme, I was confused with what flavors I was exploring and what to focus on. In my octopus instead of having a highlight of the seafood or any other unique flavor it was just sweet, overwhelming sweet. In my desert the clementine slice wasn’t even segmented and I felt like i was being fed a cutie. For the price I would much rather spend a bit more for a much better and refined experience.

One of the Best Restaurants in the City My girlfriend brought me to a special dinner tonight, and she didn't tell me what kind of food it was. However, I know her favorite is Japanese. So I was surprised when we arrived at Union Square Cafe. Firstly, the atmosphere was very nice with a high ceiling. It was clean, not too packed or crowded, and they even have a second floor! Secondly, the food! Sourdough bread with butter and sea salt sprinkled on top enhanced the flavor and made my mouth waterly after the first bite. The Beef Tartare was amazing. I've been trying to figure out what kind of brown sauce they used for three days, and I'm still stumped. So, I would say, "forget it!" (laughs). Next was the Fusilli pasta with fresh crab meat. It was creamy but light. I really enjoyed the freshness and juiciness of the crab meat, btw who wasn't? A great dish. Lastly, the Roasted Duck with Red Wine sauce. The medium-rare roasted duck was perfect, and when combined with the red wine sauce and the natural oils from the duck fat... Hmm, it was a killer! However, what made me rate this dish 5 stars was the addition of figs, which provided a touch of sourness, giving your taste buds a chance to refresh during the meal. I really liked this. As for the drinks, the Inferno with Asian hot oil was impressive, and "B.A.N.A.N.A.S." served delightful fruity aromas. A little tricky, but I kind of liked it. Overall, my first visit to Union Square Cafe was amazing and provided me with a memorable dinner. Highly recommended!

Decided to try after reading Danny Meyer’s book, and did not fail to impress. Great hospitality from the staff and the duck ragu pasta and the porterhouse steak were one of the best i’ve had. Would highly recommend as this restaurant definitely has that extra edge that makes it special and elegant, yet casual at the same time.

I can’t remember how many times I had been to this restaurant but I loved it every time. I live in a different state and come to the city every other 2 or 3 months, every one of those times I came to Union Square Cafe. Three days ago I got the country pork chop and was absolutely fenomenal, got two as easy as pie cocktails and the best non chocolate dessert, the baklava sundae. Today I got the steak tartare, unbelievable, and the caesar salad, was fine. Got those as easy as pie cocktails and the baklava dessert.

I've lived in NYC for many years now and am surprised I've never heard of or been to this place until last night. I was blown away by the attentive service and friendly faces. Everyone made me feel like a VIP guest. I had the Rigatoni alla Cacciatore dish and cherry desert. I haven't been delightfully surprised and satisfied by a meal like this in NYC for a long time! Would definitely go back!

Coming in to dine at USC was elegant. Even at the bar it felt lively and service was amazing. I had their beef tartare w/ chips, duck pasta, lamb and their white truffle dessert. I loved both their gin drinks since I am a gin type of girl and also had two glasses of wine which complimented my dishes. I will be back for more.

My first experience was an easy 5 stars. My boyfriend wasn't as impressed by his entree as the rest of the meal, but we both left very happy with the service, bread, appetizers, dessert. I liked my entree. Second time there I went with family. Same remarks about the entrees. We've decided in the future we'll stick to appetizers, pastas, sides, desserts. This time there were long wait times for drinks. Also slow to bring out the next course. I even thought my food could have been hotter. But don't let this deter you. Family raved about 90% of the food. I also appreciate that they're a gratuity included establishment. I will gladly return again!!!

I was unsure what to expect. My initial thoughts looking at the menu was the good looked pretty standard. Once I took my first bite of the gazpacho, I knew I was completely wrong and I was in for a delicious dining experience. Everything that came out had a layer of flavors that made each bite unique

A single visit is all that's needed to understand why Union Square Cafe is so adored by many in the city. Simply put, everything in the restaurant is great. Host and servers are warm and friendly, the food is fresh and delicious (especially the panzanella), and the decor is visually pleasing. Eagerly looking forward to my next meal here.

Superb lunch with exceptional service until the very end. I’ve been a fan of Danny Meyer since reading his Setting the Table. Food and warmth was all there. It was a delayed birthday celebration for my wife, so I was grateful when they brought dessert to her first with a candle on top and happy birthday writing in chocolate, something she hadn’t ordered or asked for so a lovely surprise. It was only when she and my daughters had finished eating it, and I asked where my dessert was, that I realised she’d actually been given the dessert that I had ordered and was still waiting for. Oops. Waiter didn’t pick up on the screwup or try to rectify it. I felt a bit foolish. Other than that, really lovely. I’d just suggest less ice and more coke for the kids. There was about 100ml of coke in a tall glass filled to the brim with large cubes. They weren’t too impressed.

  • 3/5 Thy P. 1 year ago on Google
Nice, old-NY atmosphere. Bread and butter tasted quite bland. Nothing special to the bread especially since nowadays, a lot of places are upgrading their game on that portion of dinner. Pasta wise, we ordered the spaghetti fra diavolo and mafaldine all'anatra. The spaghetti was a knockout––wonderfully flavored, it was fantastic. The same can't be said about the mafaldine. To both of our tastebuds, it was a bit too salty. For entree, we had the roasted duck breast. I'm someone who usually likes eating the skin but this time around, I didn't like that part too much. Otherwise the duck was okay, and I hoped the portion would be bigger given it's classified as an "entree" dish. Dessert, though, was very good. The panna cotta was a great choice.

With so many great restaurant options in NYC, it can be overwhelming, but I would definitely recommend this be on your list. The service was perfect. Our server was friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and welcoming. At no point did we feel rushed, and he made sure we enjoyed everything that was brought out. The food and drinks were amazing. The menu provides a balanced selection to satisfy most people. The food was cooked and seasoned well, and the portion sizes were appropriate. This is a place I would definitely return to the next time I am in town.

  • 3/5 Bryan L. 1 year ago on Google
Great ambiance, great service. I have to ding stars because the food is generally too salty. The olives and salted butter weren’t a great combo for the bread. The pasta was amazing, perfectly al dente with a rich, varied flavor. The olive oil poached cod was uniquely soft with a great tomato and bean base to complement. I want to revisit to try other dishes, but not sure when I would do it. I think there are other places in NYC I could try first.

A New York staple!! Food is fantastic! Superb service. From what I understand all servers and bartenders are salaried which means consistent excellent service. I’m so glad USC made it through the pandemic and still standing strong. I have been here quiet a few times over the years but all I got is this photo of some delicious oysters I had while on a date ( bad one ). Ouch !

Absolutely fantastic food and absolutely fantastic service! If there is a dress code, it's definitely not strictly enforced, but the atmosphere is a bit more on the higher end. We sat at the bar and were served by Gersom. He was absolutely fantastic, both super personable and helpful. We ordered the Fettuccine al Limon and the Gemelli al Mais, and I was so happy that they were able to make the Gemelli without the pancetta as I don't eat meat. Both dishes were incredible. We also had the Hazelnut Crunch and Panna cotta which was equally as good. Everyone on the staff is incredibly personable and professional. The host even showed the guests to the bathroom, which is a super nice touch. I'll definitely be back!

Just had lunch, haven’t eaten here in 15 years. Heard they’ve had some down years since I’ve been, but are on the upswing. Lunch was absolutely perfect. First visit in this location, unfortunately with the pandemic going on. However, they managed to provide great service and delicious food with excellent precautions, even a complimentary small bottle of hand sanitizer. First class operation, welcome back! Each dish was great, especially loved the stone fruit galette. Yum.

Union Square Cafe, you just made my day, from the silky and perfectly seasoned Carpaccio, to the masterfully cooked, tender--literally melt in your mouth pork tenderloin. Spot on service, with caring, well trained professionals at each turn, in a comfortable, low static environment. These guys know how to do it right. Bravo. -- PS, as I'm eating closer to carnivore than keto right now, you can see that they fed me very well!

IT’S A DEFINING DETAIL, the fact this fine eatery’s staff accept no tips, and I love that. The food is ably and handsomely presented but stays well within mainstream culinary custom: nothing on the plates are aggressively vertical or tortured into abstract sculptures. The room itself is handsome, while pleasing to the eye and built for comfort. But it is the staff truly distinguishes the cafe got me. They know their stuff, and more. There’s an elan I sense and I think the living wage ethos of this Danny Meyer venue is the main reason.

The service is what made the meal so spectacular--attentive but not obsequious, friendly discussions about food when we wanted to talk food and great suggestions on what to order. Three of us for dinner and none of us can recall better service than what we received from Alicia. Thank you for a memorable evening. On her advice, the three of us split two salads (the winter citrus salad was scrumptious!). We then ordered two ordered duck breasts (yum) and the roast chicken which was moist and huge (enough for lunch the next day).

This place is your classic fancy diner. The food was great but the portions were laughable. My wife was not full when we left. We each ordered an entree which led to $100 tab. (I think we also ordered wine too.) Taste does not out way cost. There are other places that taste just as good and give regular portion sizes..

I have eaten at Union Square many times. Went last year had a great meal. Went this year, an after Christmas visit to NYC. We wanted to take friends to experience great food and great service.. WELL, good not great service and really not great food!!! We all ordered steak, our friends paid for the supplement ribeye for two.It was totally undercooked and had gristle running through it. They asked for it to be cooked more, but still was under cooked . They had ordered medium rare. The other steaks were cooked properly, but not at all tender.Ordered wine, then didn't have it. The highlight were the tater tots, which were a $38.00 supplement. Cost of food was not an issue, but quality and preparation was!!!

Don't let the "Cafe" part fool you. This is a hip, chic-casual type, with excellent food and service. Dinner for 2, with 2 drinks each and 1 dessert was well over $200. The flavors in the pork chop abound- you can't go wrong!

I first dined at Union Square Cafe in 1994 and it changed my life. Literally. I didn't know food could be that good. I moved from out of state to nearby that restaurant because it just felt like that place was beginning to change old grimy New York City. And I became a lifelong lover of food and fine dining. In early 2020 I went back, and while not as epic as when I was 22, it was an amazing meal with excellent wines and perfect service. Bravo! Thank you Danny Meyer, thank you.

Incredibly disappointing Danny Meyer should be embarrassed by this mess. First of all we love Meyer's 11 Madison Park and Gramercy Tavern and often went to Union Square Cafe's original location. We had a special event and decided to try Union Square Cafe and everything about the experience was completely unacceptable. It starts with absolutely horrible service. Waiting 8 minutes for menus and water, 5 minutes for someone to clear the table, no wine to fill water/wine glasses. Totall disinterested waiter (is this the effect of tips built into the price if so end this Danny). The sommelier wine recommendation was awful and they had no idea the wine clearly needed a decant but they kept pouring until we explained it was undrinkable there was so much sendiment. (also menu has limited 0-$200 bottles of wine and lots of $300+ even though service is sub-Houstons like).. Tortellini en Brodo entree size was 7 mediocre small tortellini in chicken broth for $36. The service at the end was so bad that for the first time in 20+years in dining in NY had to get up and go find the manager. So to sum it up way too expensive, mediocre food and wine, served up by disinterested servers (not on tips) this is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

The griddled lemon pound cake is so good — it’s moist and lemony, and the olive oil added a savory richness. It’s best to share, since this cake can get heavy if eaten by one person for a starter. Quiche florentine “appetizer” might not look big but is quite rich. The eggs are fluffy; the gruyère lends great flavor; the spinach is not at all too watery. The crust is sturdy without being tough.

Very nice food and friendly staff. Non-tipping restaurant unusual for the USA

My neighborhood favorite. In fact, I went in recently to meet a friend, but arrived very early — and they were cool with me taking out a laptop and working at my table for over an hour while I waited. No pretension, no lressure to order. They simply let me chill. The service is just excellent, simply lovely.

Consistency, consistency, consistency. I've been here way too often, but they are the same every time. The food is good, not great, the service is good and the location is good.

I went there for lunch. I had an arugula salad with farro and fresh tuna. The salad was fine but I felt it was over-dressed. I had the trout with roasted brussel sprouts and potatoes which was good. The meyer lemon tart was delicious.

Everything here was amazing. So amazing in fact, that I didn’t take any pictures, I was too busy enjoying myself. The service is excellent. Great flavors all around. Cool wine list and yummy cocktails. The staff is amazing! So much attention to detail. I loved every bite and sip! Thank you for a great experience!

This restaurant exceeded my expectations, my boyfriend and I went there for a romantic meal and had to wait a little for our table but trust me they are worth the wait. The food was amazing and our server David was very friendly and the staff were extremely professional but had a relaxed and welcoming attitude. I was nervous at first because the atmosphere feels formal but we were treated so well that we felt comfortable. This place is awesome and is worth every penny.

It is a classic NYC institution that if you haven’t been yet, what are you waiting for?

Varied menu and careful cooking. Don't expect Michelin star standards but honnest fares. Great and attentive service. A smart casual bistro

This place was recommended by a friend. Today, had brunch there with another friend. The menu is pretty simple not many choices. Asked the server to recommend a salad, the server was not helping at all. The server said "whatever you feel like having, all the salads are here on the menu you pick anything you like". That's not the answer and service I would expect. When we walked in there the reception asked "what is the name on the reservation? " My friend said "we don't have a reservation ". The reception didn't even respond to my friend's answer. The reception took our names then walked us to the table without a smile. The appmersphere was nice, food was so so, I give 1 star for the service(at least there was one server smiled at us). Over all, we were not satisfied with the whole experience. I fell sorry for my friend! We had high hope for the restaurant before we walked in.

Had the pleasure of having dinner at one of the best restaurants in NYC. Sashank and Cherri gave my friends and I some of the best service we’ve ever received. From suggesting dishes to pairing wines with said dishes the service was absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to come back and will definitely be asking to be sat with Cherri or Sashank when I do.
