we visited open door on 9/2 and had such a great time viewing the birds and learning about them. the folks running this sanctuary are extremely kind and knowledgeable. every half hour of the day, a different bird would be taken out by a volunteer to show us up close and give a lesson on. the sanctuary is on a beautiful piece of land with lots of apple trees. after you are done, make sure to stop by the gift shop to further support this amazing group. we can’t stop raving about our time here!

My family and I had the best experience here! We chose to do the private 1:1 tour with Rob and it was above expectations. He was extremely knowledgeable and could tell him and his team are passionate about the work they all do that the sanctuary. He spent the time sharing stories about each bird and answering our questions. To get to see so many raptors up close and personal was an experience we will remember for a lifetime. Thank you!!

We did the off-season private tour and and this is our favorite activity we've ever done in Door County in 30 years of going there. Rob Hults, the founder, was an amazing guide, and made it both fun and educational. We were completely in awe every minute of it. Our tween and teen are still talking about it over a week later. So impressed with the valuable work this organization is doing and look forward to coming back on our next visit to Door County.

The manager Rob, his wife Lisa, and the other guide Val are friendly, patient, kind, and knowledgeable without being stuck up. Their giftshop needs improvement, but they are a non-profit.

This is amazing place to learn about these birds in an exciting way. I came on one of the Open Door days and it was very cool to see these birds up-close. Every 30 minutes they run a showing where they bring out a bird and talk about it, like what it eats and such, and afterwards they have a Q&A. Staff was quite knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely recommend of you're interested in raptors and falcons!

I did a private tour of Open Door Bird Sanctuary with a small group of family and friends last week. The founder, Rob (who is the executive director) led the tour and we got to take our time walking through the space and learning about the birds up close. Open Door Bird Sanctuary is a raptor sanctuary — so owls, eagles, falcons, etc. All the birds are wild birds with some kind of injury or disability and could not safely be released back into the wild after rescue and rehabilitation. Open Door Bird Sanctuary gives them a beautiful safe haven. The non-profit also does a lot of education onsite, in the community, and beyond with the goal of encouraging wildlife stewardship. The number of programs they did was impressive and I loved their philosophy and approach. It always centers on the well-being and free will of the birds . . . no bird is participating in educational programs if they are not about it. But many of the birds are all about it. We got to see them up close perched on the director’s hand. And they had two merlin falcons named Arthur and Percy. Right up my alley. There was also a bald eagle, a golden eagle, a barred owl who I loved . . . and more. You can see their resident birds on the website. It was really amazing — above my expectations and I didn’t really know what to expect in going to a bird sanctuary. But I left with a newfound respect and interest. And I’m ready to recommend anyone visiting Door County to check it out.
