Such a beautiful place. We only saw horses on our way in but the beach is gorgeous. The waves were amazing. Taking a nap on a beach like that was just a dream come true. Plus it's got some nice hiking trails with some really mean bugs who hold some serious grudges.

Incredible experience! Gorgeous, untamed ponies and wildlife in a clean, peaceful setting. Like nothing else in the world. Check out the ghost crabs at night. Sweet and shy little creatures. A vacation spot for families who prefer a quiet setting. Great place to reconnect and relax.

All sorts of cool natural beauty here. Even without the famous horses I would still have a blast exploring this area. Every trail I walked on had something new to offer, whether it was marshes, forests, or dunes. The seashore itself is picturesque and really cool to be at, and because it was the off season when I visited, almost no one else was at the beach. But I can't talk about this place without mentioning the horses. They were so cool to see and knowing they were wild horses wandering about. I saw about 20 of them in my visit here, and it was just an awesome experience watching them walk around and stuff. If you're ever in the area I'd definitely recommend you give this park a try.

Serene, beautiful, away from city noise. I love horses and seeing wild horses all around, roaming freely was just amazing. A friend suggested this place and i went without any expectation and only to spend sometime away from usual. This place turned out to be completely spectacular!! We made a very good decision of staying in camp, it was windy but weather was just fine. The night sky was so beautiful with no city lights!!

Nice place! May take longer than you'd like to get into, but worth it. Didn't go to the beach areas that day, but ventured into the trails and wooden walkways. Between venturing off and driving out, we counted 20 horses. So beautiful to watch them. People are respectful and quiet, so it makes it easier to stand there and soak it all in! I think this is a great place to bring your kids, too. They'll enjoy it and learn alot. Visitor center before the bridge was interesting, informative, and the staff were nice.

This was an absolutely amazing experience! The horses are beautiful! The beaches are beautiful! I visited during the off season, so I can't tell you much about the stores or the staff. You can even camp out here! I can't wait to camp, next time!

My family and I had a great day exploring this National Park. We were able to see wild horses, deer, and even bald eagles. It was very relaxing and beautiful everywhere we went. We will definitely be coming back.

The national park has lots of fun things to do. If you camp here or in the state (adjacent, with hot water shower), remember to get up early to see the wild horses at sun rise. Also you can get some crabs, mussel, and clams for dinner at the bay side.

Long stretches of beaches, multiple camping locations and options, and wild horses! We enjoyed oceanfront tent camping for two nights in October. Based on multiple sources we were prepared to extreme bug conditions but were pleasantly surprised to find no bugs at all! Dumb luck or great time of year? Either way, I'll take it!

Phenomenal place with miles and miles of beaches to explore. Park rangers were extremely courteous and informative, and the facilities were surprisingly clean given how busy it can get in the summer. Absolutely worth visiting, preferably in the winter months when there are less crowds.

We loved all of the trails and the beautiful beach. The surrounding area and beach areas have mot been commercialized which makes this such a wonderful place to visit. I have seen wild ponies, dolphins, eagles and such more wildlife during our stay.

If you love horses, beaches and nature, this is the perfect camping spot. Yes, there are mosquitoes so take the proper precautions but Assateague Island is a breathe of fresh air. As a single mom with a young child, this was a perfect weekend camping getaway. It is easy to bike with a trailer, tons of nature to see and explore, lovely beaches for sea shell collecting and building Sandcastles and lots of opportunities to go barefoot and explore. Also, the horses are everything. My daughter rides horses and it was important for her to see horses as they exist wild and free. Be sure to stay 40 feet away and use precautions similar to those in bear country with food.

We came to see the horses. Saw 8 within minutes. It was afternoon and they were feeding in the marsh. Also saw a pony. We didn’t stay to get to the beach it was so crowded so make sure you get there early. They also have a really nice visitor center. You are able to rent bikes, and they have a paved path.

This is the most unique place that I have ever camped. There are literally wild ponies who roam the island. The campgrounds and beaches are clean. The trails are beautiful and allow visitors to see all many views of Assateague including ocean and marsh. Many people come for the ponies but also for bird watching. If you do come please follow the rules on keeping distance from the wild animals, it is only fair to protect them as we experience their environment. Whenever I visit there are always people too close trying to get pictures and not putting away food and garbage which draws the animals to the campsites.

We went 3 days in a row even though we were staying in OC. Leave your phone behind (you won't have a signal). Walking paths, beaches, marshes, birds, and of course ponies. We saw ponies all 3 days but we also spent serious time looking. We went on a kayaking trip while there and it was a good time.

Wonderful national seashore. Very kind, informative man at the visor center, thank you Peter. Spent the day there, visited the lighthouse, went around black duck Marsh and saw lots of ponies along the way and at the overlook out in the fields. Lots of other gorgeous wildlife, esp birds and waterfowl. The beach itself was so beautiful. Great day, can't wait to go back. Thinking of camping for a night or two next time. I believe with the proper planning and timing (off-peak when people aren't accidentally luring herds of ponies in to ravage the sites lol) it'd be amazing on the beach.

Absolutely in love with Assateague Island! This place is a hidden gem, and I can’t get enough of it. The highlight? The majestic horses that roam freely. In both of my visits, I’ve been lucky enough to spot these stunning creatures. Just a friendly heads-up, the park rangers are super vigilant about keeping everyone safe, so they’ll remind you to keep a respectful distance of 40 feet from the horses. Safety first, right? Speaking of safety, I’d recommend bringing a hard-top cooler, as those curious horses have an eye for any goodies we bring along. After all, it’s their island, and we’re just lucky guests. Don’t forget, the entrance fee is $25 for a 7-day pass, and if you’re feeling adventurous, they offer beach camping too. Can’t wait to make more memories in this truly unique paradise! 🐴🌴

Amazing place to visit. We were fortunate to see several horses while we were there. We did pay the fee to enter and drive around, but there is a good amount that is free to drive through. We went on a a cloudy Tuesday afternoon, and there was no traffic and barely anyone there. Highly recommend! It is so wonderful to be able to see nature truly untouched and wild horses roaming free.

We visited the north and south side. We saw horses on both sides with the horse up close on the road on the north side. Seems they have more free roam on that side with a fenced in area on the south side. Worth visiting both sides to learn the history, enjoy the trails, landscape, horses and ocean.

What an amazing little national park! If you are in the area at all, it is definitely worth going. The scenery itself is worth it alone, if you teach the horses it is absolutely breathtaking. So pack a picnic and spend a day along the waters of this national treasure.

The island was amazing to visit. The park staff was knowledgeable and willing to give suggestions. The tails are easy to navigate. Many scenic overlooks. The wildlife is abundant. The beach is easy to access and lots of parking. Nice place to swim, walk, and pick shells. Opens early to see the sunrise and late for moonrise. Day pass is $10 and weekly is $25. The lighthouse is a great stop.

Love the boat ride very welcoming! They showed us crabs and some other alive animals on the boat! There are bathrooms in the boat as well. We got to try to catch some things as well. Very affordable. We out there for about a 1 30 so very worth it. And I love how we explored the island very welcoming and I love it! We also saw the ponies!

Breathtaking! I was in town for a short trip for a wedding and when scrolling Google Maps to see what was in the area I came across Assateague Island National Seashore and the possibility of seeing wild horses hooked me! I’m in love visiting all National Parks and seashores and this one did not disappoint! Our first stop was to the visitor center where the gave us a map and we asked some questions and purchased a few souvenirs. We cruised through in a convertible and before we even made it to the gate to get in had already spotted wild horses along the road eating in the vegetation. On our first day we visited the north beach area and we were delighted to find a pack of horses napping in the sand as we walked along the shore. I could’ve watched them for days. They eventually woke up and headed toward the water before working their way up the beach. North Beach had bathrooms and a shop with beach goods and snacks. The next day we drove through to see the campsites — it’s true beach camping here and I’d love the bring my family here to enjoy it someday. Then we headed down to south beach and we were delighted to see more horses. They even walked right down the boardwalk to get to the beach. The horses did approach some people on the beach and even checked out their wagon hoping to find some snacks. We viewed from a safe distance per all the postings. We took a walk toward the 4-wheel drive beach and saw lots of surfers enjoying the wake. We rented kayaks one morning from the Assateague Outfitters located in the park. We paddled through the bay and spotted more horses in the banks enjoying the vegetation. We rented the kayaks for two hours and enjoyed the sites. The water is pretty shallow here so it makes it less intimidating for those new to kayaking. We had a very relaxing time amongst nature & wildlife.

This place was beautiful and well kept. They had a nice visitors center and I saw absolutely no litter! They did have lifeguards on duty. The water was cool and the sand soft. We saw many wild horses. Even one that was putting on a show and very purposefully stopping traffic lol.

Went during off season, but the horses didn't disappoint! There are restrooms by every parking area, separate areas to change and outside showers to rinse the sand off of you. Small Pavillions with Picnic tables, you can camp, drive (with permit) have a small fire ALL on this beach! There are some Hiking trails as well and you don't have to even get out of your car, if you didn't want to! You can drive through the state park and still see the wildlife.

Love this place so much! Haven't been there in so many years. Such an amazing experience seeing the horses and wildlife. Beautiful park so nicely maintained. Lots of trails with decking great for strollers and wheelchairs. National Park free entry for park pass holders.

We visited Assateague Island and it was really nice! There aren’t that many trails or things to do, so if you’re not planning on spending a full beach day there, I would make other plans nearby to fill the day. We chose to do rail bikes in Berlin, only 15mins away from the island. We didn’t see actual horses on the beach, but yes in the parking lots and park entrance. The island is clean and well kept. Beach was pretty crowded when we went to see it, but it was during Summer so it’s likely calmer during off-season and you might see more wild horses. The entrance fee could be lower. It costs $25 per vehicle, which is the same as other national parks but there is a lot less to see and do here. We arrived at 10am on a Sunday and barely had any line to get in, but as we were leaving, around 12:30pm, the line to get in was insanely long and easily a 1-1.5 hour wait.

We went car camping here and it was the most magical and beautiful car camping experience we had, despite the rain overnight, and cold autumn winds. Oceanside Loop 1, site 19. Lovely campground with sand and wild flowers and wild horse!

  • 5/5 Mich M. 6 months ago on Google
There’s a tourist office right before crossing the bridge to ask about the horse’s whereabouts. They won’t know the exact location, but they’ll give you places to look out for. There’s also a bathroom to use here before heading to the beaches to look for the horses. We were able to spot a few after driving around!

April was the perfect time to visit! Check out the visitor center on your way in to learn a bit of the history and then head over the bridge. We saw a couple horses up close by the road, but most were farther off along the shore. I'll bring binoculars next time! Loved the Bayside, was calm and peaceful and we walked a couple miles along the shore, finding crabs and a baby terrapin. Ocean side was much colder and winder and covered with horseshoe crab carcasses (which were pretty cool). Think next time I will camp there, it was a bit crowded for my taste.

Awesome beach and park. We saw few wild horses and walked on the beach. Our poodle enjoyed beach tremendously! Plenty spots for camping. Be aware of thorns. Our dog catch plenty of those just walking on grassy part. It was very painful for our fingers to remove those. To get to a deeper area of the park you need to pay even off season. Dog were not allowed there. Big parking lot. Bathrooms available in Visitor center before the breach. During season facilities open for campers on site.

One of the most beautiful seashores on the east coast in my opinion. The only problem and I'll g ahead and get it out of the way is the "wild horses" that wander freely. First off some of the horses were domesticated at first from what I gathered from the park rangers in charge of them. You are not allowed to touch, feed, nor bother them in any way even when they are tearing up your property in search of food. My encounter was nor necessarily great nor bad in my eyes since I am a retired horseman from Kentucky. They were hungry and were packed meaning there was more than one wandering in packs like stray dogs. So the whole time I'm being targeted by a pack of hungry horses the park rangers are advising me to back away from them and drop my stuff. Crazy huh? However the seashore itself was clean and beautiful ngl. I would advice to not bring any snacks with you when you decide to go to the shore though lol.

Horses immediately off the bridge, then again on a pull off before even getting to the national park. Life of the marsh trail was pretty cool, tons of crabs, birds, and a turtle. Life of the forest trail started out a bit dull, but then you could see horses across the way near the Old Ferry Landing, including a very young pony. Life of the dunes was meh, mostly because it was scorching hot and super buggy, but once finished you are at the southern most "normal" beach with shower rooms and access via boardwalk.

Amazing camping experience. If you could, get the campsite #78 at the Assateague island national seashore (ocean side)... just get it. It is very private but please DO NOT forget to take mosquito repellent as they could just kill you at this campsite. We didn't find as many mosquitoes near other campsites around us. This has been the most pleasant camping experience with the beach steps away, private and very well maintained.

It was over 30 years since I had been there and I still love it! I got to share this experience with my son and he absolutely loved it too. We saw some wild ponies and a lot of wild life. Can't wait to go up again!! These photos were taken at the Assateague National Seashore past the light house but before the Tom's Cove Visitor center and right after the visitor's center

Absolutely gorgeous place. Beautiful beach. Saw the horses. Just fun to see them in the wild. Could have seen them without paying the park admission as one greeted us at the end of the bridge - but love supporting our national parks

Assateague is my happy place. I just love going here. I love going for sunrise and I usually stay till sunset. I will often just go down for the day. I usually meet up with my friends that live in Snow Hill. It is about a 3 hr drive for me. It is just so peaceful and less crowded on their beaches. I love to watch the surfers and also the wind surfers too. And I love, love going to see the ponies! I would go everyday if I could to see them!!

Absolutely breathtaking experience that we WILL be back for! We drove 8.5 hours and spent some good hours on the beach and came home. The horses were seen in 3 or 3 spots and we're beautiful too! We got in early in the morning, set up chairs on the beach under the stars and relaxed next to the waves until the sun came up.

I adore Assateague island. I've been visiting this place since I was knee high to a grasshopper and will continue to visit this place in the future. this visit is with my wife and kids and couldn't be happier with the experience they are having so far. We spent a ton of time on the beach and we're able to find shells, sand crabs, and even horseshoe crab shells. There is limited parking which means there is limited number of folks on the beach. Not super busy even for August. We saw ponies and tons of birds which was a delight. the park requires a pass which is 10 dollars per day or 45 for the year. will absolutely return often.

  • 5/5 Brian C. 1 year ago on Google
First time visiting this beautiful place and camping. Loved the access to the clean beach. I would recommend to get to the beach early or not on a holiday weekend because my boyfriend and I were waiting like an hour and 15 minutes just to make it to pay the fee to access the island. Camping- lock your food up because the wild horses will come to your campsite if you don’t. It happened to your campsite neighbors. No one was hurt but still causes some anxiety. Loved the bathroom for camping for obvious reasons. Great place to explore and camp. I would recommend experiencing this place yourself!
