$100
adoption
fee
becomes
$600
overnight.
If
you
are
considering
fostering
or
an
adoption
trial
through
APA
be
forewarned…
I
brought
Callie
home
on
yesterday
for
a
2-week
adoption
trial.
Callie
is
a
beautiful
cattle
dog
mix.
She’s
not
the
dog
I
was
looking
for,
but
she’s
the
dog
that
spoke
to
me.
I
called
the
APA
this
morning
at
10:30
to
report
that
Callie
was
having
trouble
breathing.
I
did
so
because
they
told
me
that
they
would
cover
any
medical
costs
incurred
during
the
trial.
The
person
on
the
phone
asked
if
her
snot
was
yellow
or
green.
The
answer
was
no.
She
then
explained
to
me
that
it
probably
wasn’t
Kennel
Cough
and
that
head
congestion,
wheezing,
and
gasping
for
breath
can
all
be
caused
by
issues
like
allergies
and
stress.
Issues,
in
other
words,
that
are
not
the
responsibility
of
APA
to
treat.
Knowing
no
better,
I
decided
to
wait.
Tonight
at
11:30,
I
drove
to
Veterinary
Specialist
Services
in
Manchester
because
Callie
literally
couldn’t
breathe.
I
looked
up
her
symptoms
online
-
unable
to
breathe
through
nose,
labored
breathing
through
mouth,
runny
nose,
coughing
and
sneezing,
runny
eyes,
etc.
Everything
I
read
said
to
seek
immediate
veterinary
support.
VSS
called
APA
to
have
treatment
approved,
and
THEY
REFUSED.
The
APA
rep
said
they
would
prefer
to
treat
her
at
their
facility
tomorrow
(now
today).
Apparently,
literally
being
unable
to
breath
does
not
warrant
emergency
vet
care.
Well,
APA,
you
could
have
treated
her
at
your
facility
today
(now
yesterday)
if
the
person
I
spoke
to
on
the
phone
this
morning
had
taken
my
concerns
seriously.
It
turns
out
that
there
are
communicable
illnesses
other
than
Kennel
Cough.
Callie
was
diagnosed
with
an
upper
respiratory
infection
that
requires
antibiotics,
and
that
the
vet
said
most
certainly
was
acquired
while
in
the
shelter.
The
statement
she
sent
home
with
me
reads
“upper
respiratory
infection,
concern
it
could
become
pneumonia”.
So,
even
though
Callie
still
legally
belongs
to
APA,
and
even
though
they
sent
me
home
with
a
sick
dog,
I
had
to
pay
for
the
exam,
X-rays,
and
treatment
myself,
$488.
I
repeat,
$488.
Could
I
have
waited
another
12
hours
to
call
and
see
if
APA
can
fit
us
in
for
an
exam?
Sure.
My
question
to
you
is,
would
you
wait
12
hours
if
your
fur
baby
literally
couldn’t
breathe?
APA
wants
responsible
people
to
adopt
their
rescues
and
give
them
a
loving,
stable
home.
At
2:00am
this
morning,
I
was
fined
almost
$500
for
doing
just
that,
and
I
haven’t
even
adopted
Callie
yet.
2
stars
because
I
believe
in
the
mission
of
APA,
but
boy
is
it
poorly
executed.
____________
RESPONSE
to
APA
administration’s
9/15/22
response
to
my
follow-up
phone
call
this
morning
and
this
post,
since
I
cannot
reply
to
the
post.
I
do
appreciate
your
prompt
response
and
confirmation
that
you
will
not
share
any
of
the
costs
of
Callie’s
exam,
X-rays,
or
treatment,
even
though
you
sent
her
home
with
me
with
an
undiagnosed,
untreated
communicable
bacterial
infection,
and
she
is
still
officially
under
your
care.
I’ve
looked
over
the
contract
closely
and
understand
that
while
within
the
trial
period,
all
medical
decisions
are
up
to
your
discretion.
It’s
unfortunate
that
when
I
called
yesterday
morning
to
express
my
concerns,
I
was
not
encouraged
to
bring
her
in
to
be
seen
by
APA
staff
during
the
day.
I
am
new
to
dogs
and
am
not
a
vet,
so
I
literally
didn’t
know
what
to
do
without
guidance.
I
thought
it
was
Ashton’s
job
as
Foster
Coordinator
to
provide
that
guidance
for
foster
and
trial
adoption
families.
I
was
clearly
wrong
since
she
did
not
follow-up
on
my
early
morning
phone
call.
I
guess
when
you’re
dealing
with
hundreds
of
rescue
animals
at
any
given
time
you
become
desensitized
to
illness-induced
distress.
I
admit
that
am
fully
to
blame
for
caring
about
Callie’s
well-being
and
taking
her
symptoms
seriously.
I
was
unaware
that
severe
respiratory
infections
and
symptoms
are
considered
insignificant
and
not
an
emergency
to
those
“in
the
know”
about
dog
health.
Given
the
complete
lack
of
support
I
have
received
from
APA
during
this
trial
process,
I
will
go
ahead
and
adopt
her.
