The former Arsenal of the Republic of Poland was built in the years 1638-43 on the initiative of King Władysław IV, under the supervision of the then general of horse artillery Paweł Grodzicki. Built on a rectangular plan with a spacious internal courtyard, it was one of the most functional buildings in Poland intended for storing weapons. After the November Uprising, it housed a prison and, from 1935, the Municipal Archives. At that time, a thorough renovation was carried out, restoring the building to its 17th-century form. Destroyed in 1944, it was rebuilt in 1947-50 under the direction of Brunon Zborowski for the Archaeological Museum.
