Spectacular museum. Their collection is beautiful, modern, and unique. The staff here are very friendly and professional. Given that this is a free museum, we were very impressed with how well managed, organized, and clean the entire place was. We came early in the morning and there were only 2 or 3 other guests in each gallery, which made our experience that much better. Highly recommend this place if you're visiting Essen.

A large permanent exhibition with a current exhibition celebrating 100 years to the collection. The museum has many pleasant spaces, there's a lot to see but also places to take a pause or rest. Many highlights, in and out the special exhibition for which you stand in line and pay 14€ The permanent exhibition is for free! Because one of us is impressionism fan, we took the line and paid for RENOIR, MONET, GAUGUIN - but also without that, I'd enjoy the visit.

One of Germany’s most impressive art museums that nobody seems to know about. The Impressionist collection will leave you dazzled. Make the trip to come here or you will be missing out on so many beautiful works of art.

I went here for the exhibition of Keith Haring. It was super interesting and well exhibited, the big room was perfect for the paintings and even the techniques they used for the exposition were really smart. Recommended!

This museum is undoubtedly one of the best modern art museums in Europe. It has a very impressive collection, the presentation of the works very well supported by the architecture of the museum buildings. The tempory exhibitions prove this museum is active and leading.

Nice museum with plenty to see and a good collection. The permanent exhibition is free. A couple staff were a bit rude, but overall definitely worth it.

Modern museum with a good collection of high profile art work. Not too crowded (ppl & art), clear flow, knowledgeable security workers who are keen to share their insights and anecdotes. Spend around 1.5h for the main exhibition with our boys. Highlight the camera/video distortion in the main lobby.

Great collection featuring top artists of the 20th century. Well presented and designed, the rooms are organised by topic rather than merely chronologically. The staff was eager to interact, friendly and informative.

Disorder and lack of coherent display of artworks. The spaces of this museum are actually huge, but they are not rationally exploited: The managers have tried to mix in the same room , for example, an ancient Egyptian statue next to the expressionism artworks : There is no clear meaning in doing this . The visitors have no chance to understand where is the logical or historical link between ancien Egypt statuary and Expressionismus. This is just one of the many examples I collected during my visit. Nolde is in one room, then in another and moreover in another. But there is no Leitmotiv in such a display , no chronology and no link among artworks. Frankly it gives the impression of visiting a storeroom. Folkwang in the past was better placed when organising an exhibition on ONE artist or on ONE mainstream school of artists. But its permanent collection, albeit on rotation of artworks, has deceived me beyond any expectations. We are however grateful for the kindness from the museum managers to let the admission free of charge.

A spacy museum. The temporary exhibition (expressionists) is quite good but not exciting. The tickets are a bit expensive with 14€ (corrected) if you visit just the temporary exhibition. Also the prices at the restaurant are on the higher side.

This museum is located in Essen German, Essen is an industrial type city has that has a small town center (mitte) and one of the best Christmas Festivals we've been to for a small city. First and foremost the Folkwang museum does not charge a fee to see their large art collection, but they do charge to enter the traveling art collection. We paid 8euro per person to enter the traveling art section. Both the free and paid art collection is large and contains items from Europe and across the world. You can get lost and enjoy just walking around the 3 floors reading and German and English information cards for each item. I did learn (after violating) that there is a 1-1/2 foot distance required from the art collections. In my defense they didn't have the normal white line painted on the floor.

Major art collection in a beautiful modern building by David Chipperfield, also showing changing exhibition. The current print exhibition was excellent. The collection galleries are very spacious (almost empty...) with an interesting, maybe slightly overworked mixed hanging. There is a well stocked museum shop and excellent museum restaurant. Highly recommended

The only issue I have with this place is the security staff. Wow. Just wow. So intrusive. All dressed in black like some squad of inspectors waiting to pounce. Otherwise it’s a great gallery. Apparently voted most beautiful gallery in the world.. mmm that I can’t see. But it’s a great gallery space however. Really nice collection. Free entry. Some beautiful Buddhas and bodhisattvas. It’s all hung by theme which I’m not much of a fan of. Could do with some improvements but you’re getting 4/5. Just sort your imposing security out please

The Folkwang museum has an exciting architecture, continuously combining interior and exterior, deliberately presenting the exhibition halls as a maze, interjecting reading and rest areas, enticing one to just wander around and discover. Great collection of German Expressionists. I came to Essen especially to see this museum and stayed for 2 days, it is that good! And the direction decided to keep entrance free, as a gift to art lovers.

This art museum is absolutely fabulous, I'm speechless! First of all, they have big parking under the museum, easy to access, with a lot of places, you don't have to worry about your car! As about the museum, wow, it was one of the most pleasant surprises from my entire life: a huge number of artworks, very well done arranged and showed, with an exact quantity of light on them. You may take pictures (except for those who have a sign near them?!) but you cannot make (short) movies in some rooms, the guardian, very polite, will come to you to apologize for this aspect. I think I've made hundreds of pictures and, maybe, tens of short movies! At the end of my visit, I bought two great albums from their library, "Collage" by Brandon Taylor and "Robert Rauschenberg", by Leah Dickerman & Achim Borchardt-Hume (lots of other contributors) and I drank a very good coffee to their art-bar-cafeteria named Edda! Bravo to the administrators, bravo to the entire staff! You have made my day! It was a huge pleasure to discover all your treasure - please receive my gratitude!

(Translated by Google) Extremely nice staff! I left my brand new smartphone in the exhibition. Not only that it was collected by the folder in a matter of seconds. Another folder even recognized me and stopped me to tell me that my cell phone had been found before I even knew it! The Keith harring exhibition that we were there for was very lovingly set up and curated and would have been worth the rather cheap admission price. In any case, it is certain that it would have been a different experience in other museums. (Original) Extrem nettes Personal!

This is a really brilliant museum to visit! The staff are super friendly and helpful. I was able to take pictures the whole way around (without a flash) and I wasn’t made to feel unwelcome. The staff were really helpful when I asked questions. The exhibits were amazing, I spent hours there and had a fantastic day. The cafe was also good but didn’t provide any dairy free milk alternatives - this is my only criticism! A great place to visit and I could not recommend it enough.

Emblematic collection in a gorgeous building. The folkwang collection tells the story of early 20th century art and it's problematic treatment during WW2. Plus holds contemporary exhibition of great renown. It's a busy place, schools, busses with visitors,... But they tend to stick to the big exhibits and not the rest of the collection. Also worth mentioning: well stocked and original museum shop!

I learned a lot about the history of the museum throughout the 20th century - including the war years. A fantastic collection of oeuvres in a modern, clean, and sleek building. 10/10 would go again.

The regular exhibition is free and is alone worth visiting. The building itself is modern and has many sitting areas to chill or take a break. Most staff are friendly but some are a bit stern. I personally don’t care about how and when the buyers aquired which paintings. But that was the focus of the text in the current main exhibition of Renoir, Monet, Gauguin.

Really good experience. Free entry for the permanent exhibition. Can look really closely at some famous paintings. Would recommend a couple of hours to visit.

Easily my favourite visit in Essen. Small as art museums go, but the architecture suits the work well, it's light and airy and quiet. Collection is diverse and I liked that it wasn't split by art movement like in a lot of museums (it's curated by mood and theme). They had a super fascinating ranking of provenance in some of the collection which I would like to see picked up as a methodology in more museums, and the explanation gave a rare and valuable insight into the working of museums, which felt really special. Also, they had a Barnett Newman, which I did not know going in, and it's breathtaking. Rather excessive number of security guards here though (like 2-3 per room??!), and one of them kept pacing across the room and back again and snorting which was a little distracting in a quiet museum 😅 Staff on the front desk and Garderobe were very kind however and generally an enjoyable visit 😊

The museum has pictures of different ancient lithographs from Paris and some from certain parts of Africa. I enjoyed my visit, but note that this museum DOESN'T open on MONDAYS. And also it doesn't cost much to visit. You can buy your ticket on the day of the visit.

👍👍 That is a really beautiful and nice place in the middle of the city. There’s a lot of space for everyone! Playground for kids, lake, grass, playground for adults:) It’s not crowded, and you can enjoy it! In the summer lots of people sitting here with friends, playing games! Love it!
