Museum is simply superb. It is not too big, but well structured and has some stunning pieces of art ranging from Middle Ages to XIX century Impressionism. It is well structured, many items have short, useful descriptions.

This awful modern building, which would look good gracing some 1980s suburban shopping centre, is in fact a treasure house. Inside is the city's stupendous collection of art. Housed on three floors, the first is devoted to medieval, the second to baroque, and the third to the nineteenth century. Dear reader, I entered around 14:00 and did not emerge until 17:00 - and only having done two of the three floors. I do not know any other city collection that has so much medieval art. Cologne is a rich city - and has been rich for centuries. It is also a Catholic city; indeed, its archbishop was one of the seven Electors for the Holy Roman Empire. The city also still possesses a number of Romanesque churches. So, I guess it's no surprise at the richness of its medieval art collection. The huge central room on the medieval floor is devoted solely to triptychs. I didn't think I would spend much time on the baroque floor, since it's not really my period. But then I forgot that it also included the glories of the Dutch Golden Age, as well as the likes of Bellotto and Guardi in Venice. They even have a Joseph Wright of Derby! The collection was great, a small museum with a tight knit collection spread over a few floors. However it was hard to enjoy it when I had a bad experience with the reception and ticket staff. The second floor was my favourite because it had paintings from the baroque period. But still the really bad service regarding garderobe(u have to wait a huge line to give ur stuff and also wait in the same line, to pick it up), and only one toilet( and that one only for disabled people, so other people also have only this option to use) and the door there is not locking. (How then disabled people can go there??? Another thing is application with audio guide, which is lagging, and also impossible to use with a locked phone, so basically i have to carry my screen on, while listening and trying to watch art objects.

I went to see the Frankfurter Philharmonic perform Carmina Burana witha 200+ choir. Although we sat in the 5th floor, the sound was absolutely breathtaking. The soprano was clearly heard and carried even pianissimo parts to the very top. The opera house was initially build in 1880 but damaged heavily in WW2 so had to be rebuilt in the 1950s. The building is still very beautiful and the acoustics are astounding! Well worth a visit.

Don't forget to enjoy the details in the Madonna by Lochner. I fall in love again every time.

The museum definitely had some interesting pieces but on the whole I found that there were not that many works that really stood out to me. The painting shown in the picture below is a notable exception. Of course it highly depends on personal preference, but I would personally recommend to go to the Ludwig museum first.

One of the best museum to visit in Cologne. It presents a variety of classic to neo-impressionistic artworks. In addition, the special exhibitions are always worth a visit.

Its not only a wonderful museum, but a great place to learn about different art techniques.

Beautiful artwork. It demonstrated the white washing of à religion that stemmed from Africa. It also depicted how easily people want to believe they created something that was stolen.

I very much like the presentation. Very modern, a very nice atmosphere, good lighting. I can only recommend to plan spending some time there.

The place was really nice and the tour was easy to follow, so you can skip and go to your fav style/period. My only problem is that I expected more Van Gogh pieces, as there's only one and the description makes it sound like there's more, but I still enjoyed a lot as I got to discover other magnificent pieces from artists I didn't know ^^

Three floors of well lighted display rooms big and not cramped. English translation of picture details. Religious art on top floor. With some very disturbing items labeled as the gruesome room. Renaissance art on another floor. Some interesting piece's of statuary. And Bruegel Duer, dutch masters. And 19th century impressionists. Not very expensive. Located close to old town center.

It gave me a fascinating experience. The museum contains painting arts from middle age, to Baroque and to finish with 19th century. It certainly doesn’t have those famous paintings, but they reveal the changes of painting pattern/skills over centuries in a really good and attractive way. I believe that the gallery for Baroque period is the most impressive one. They provide some small “play” for you to see the wonderful interaction between light/shade and the painting of real objects, which is the main feature of Baroque arts. I arrived around noon, and no one was there, so I was lucky to enjoy the whole museum peacefully. When I came out, sometime around 2pm, the lobby was crowded with tourists.

This was an impressive museum as several reviewers have noted. Our experience could have been enhanced by friendly, helpful, welcoming staff. We found most of them cold and unconcerned, except for a delightful lady who was in charge of the cloakroom.

Probably the least enjoyable museum I’ve ever been to. Why does anyone want to know about all of the wealthy people who have paid to have a picture painted in cologne for the last few hundred years. I left this museum wondering why no one eats the rich. I would rather eat lead paint chips than waste energy going to this museum ever again. The modern art museum in Köln is so much better even with their so-so presentation of art. Take a drive to Bonn and skip this place if you want a better art museum that’s not just long dead rich people or religious metaphors staring down from the walls. Attached is the only interesting piece of art in the building. As others have mentioned this museum has some special staff. They do a good job making you feel like a criminal as you walk through.

Very many beautiful paintings.

It would be great for visiting both koln dom and this museum at one day. It has pretty many pieces of holy, sacred paintings and also of medieval art, Baroque art and impressionism. I highly recommend this museum and I want to visit again if there is anothor good special exhibition. For your information, I looked around for 3 and half hours. I looked every pieces into detail, and unfortunately I missed special exhibition. So you will spend more than 4 hours if you look into every painting in details.

Such a pleasant, modest gallery let down by it's rude staff. The collection itself is well worth a visit, just be prepared for a negative customer service experience. Every single member of staff I encountered was plain rude with the exception of the staff in the shop. Truly never experienced anything like it anywhere in Europe let alone Germany, very strange. I would have stayed a little longer but had had enough of the sour atmosphere after about an hour

My favorite museum in Cologne, Germany 🇩🇪. A wonderful collection of exquisite art from the early 20th century to the medieval era welcomed me as I came to see Hieronymus Bosch's Adoration of the Child. Also on exhibit are some excellent Monet pieces.

The Museum is really beautiful, the staff is nice. The rooms are maybe a bit noisy when people are talking loud. The Medieval collection is beautiful and was for me the major point of this visit. The rest of the collections is interesting too !

An amazing collection for a very affirdable entrance price. Outstanding art from some histories most magnificent creators. Please note the cafe only accepts cash currently..(Aug 23)

Definitely one of the best art museums in Europe!

This museum is a must see. There are some really great art works that if I wouldn’t want to miss. The people were also really nice and friendly. Just be aware, the first Thursday of the month is only free for the Kölner:innen(not free for everybody like in Düsseldorf 😇) I didn’t get that information anywhere on the website. But I gladly paid for the ticket anyways and it worth every cent 😌

The collection is very nice and deserves the visit, covering middle age to end of XIX. The ticket office and cloakroom are not very welcoming. A little warning about the café: you don’t get the paper receipt (you're told the total price), you can only pay in cash (that’s unique among all the museums we visited in Germany), and as some prices (ex. some cakes, mineral water…) don’t figure on the menu, it’s up to you to trust the bill's total or too late to discuss…

Tolle Ausstellungen, sehr schöne Bilder und geschichtlich sehr interessant. Ich habe gemerkt, dass auf dem Bild vom 18 Jahrhundert liest die heilige Mutter das Buch auf Hebräisch. Und noch auf einem Bild ist eine jüdische Familie im Trauer nach der Verfolgung. Und schon damals war das Bild umstritten. Tja. Und tolles Bild vom Goethe, nie gesehen. Fasziniert hat mich auch Stadt Aussicht auf dem 3 Stock. Und noch mehr...
