Great mining museum with lots of interenting content on mining in general, minerals, history of mining, mining techniques with lots of practical and interactive material. Also, beautiful view from the top and nice experience in the underground mine round walk.

(Translated by Google) I always like to come back here, because the outdoor area changes very positively from year to year and finally, after years of renovation, the machine hall is open again. In addition, the view from the accessible shaft structure over shaft 2 is always a pleasure. I was here for the first time decades ago when it wasn't a LWL museum and everything was more or less disordered and was also used by external companies as a warehouse or business premises. The building with the wages hall in particular was not in good condition. The two current shaft frames did not exist at this point either, because the original ones had already been dismantled at the end of the 1960s and beginning of the 1970s. I still know the two current shaft frames from their original locations. In particular, I saw the shaft structure above the northern shaft 4 in mining at the Herner colliery Friedrich der Große 3/4 until it was closed in 1978, because I had lived nearby at the time. Brief information about the former shaft 3 Frederick the Great. Year of construction: 1903, (changed in 1912) Builder: Company Orange Gelsenkirchen, scaffolding height to the middle of the rope sheave: 32 m, scaffolding height to the top edge of the roof: 40 m, rope sheave diameter: 6 m, rope diameter: 55 mm, outer dimensions of the cage guide frame: 4.06 x 2, 07 m, hanging bench height: 9 m, rope breaking load: 150 t, weight 104 t. And the shaft structure of the Wilhelmine Victoria 1/4 coal mine in Gelsenkirchen, above shaft 2, is also known to me from its original location. Because the mine was right on the A 42 and I drove past it twice a day on the way to and from work. The colliery was closed in 1960, but the shafts remained open and shaft 1 was in operation as a cable car shaft for the Consolidation colliery until the 1980s. It is great that the two shaft frames were saved and given a new purpose. A visit to the museum is always worthwhile, especially for non-residents. The nice thing is that you can move freely anywhere on the site and should also use it, because there is always something to discover. Sometimes even the little things are interesting, especially for children. If you should get tired after all the great impressions, then there is a chic restaurant that invites you to linger. The associated beer garden is also very attractively designed and very cozy.

I’ll be honest, I arrived too early for a game at VfL Bochum and only ended up at the Mining Museum because I walked past it on my way to find some food. I had really low expectations, but it ended up being one of the best museums I’ve been to. For €5 you can walk through a maze of underground tunnels full of machinery, you can ride the simulator and feel the warmth of an old mine, and you can see the great views over the city from the lookout tower. I could’ve spent longer here, definitely.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the German Mine Museum in Bochum, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I stepped inside, I was transported back in time to the heyday of mining in the region. The museum is incredibly well-curated, with informative exhibits that cover everything from the evolution of mining technology to the daily lives of miners. Throughout the museum, there are interactive displays, multimedia presentations, and fascinating artifacts that bring the history of mining to life. I especially appreciated the attention to detail and the effort that went into preserving this important part of our industrial heritage. The staff at the museum were friendly and knowledgeable, and they were more than happy to answer any questions I had. Plus, the onsite facilities, including a gift shop and cafe, made it easy to spend the whole day exploring. Overall, I can't recommend the German Mine Museum enough. Whether you're a history buff, a science enthusiast, or just looking for a unique experience, this museum has something for everyone. It's a true gem in the heart of Bochum.

My father worked in the mines during WWII, an endearing and interesting experience, especially the group tour 50 metres down the mines via elevator. At only 10 euros entry fee, good value for money. Parking was free, however the downside was finding car space.

(Translated by Google) Modern museum for young and old. There are various circular routes - some with interactive stations 👍 Super hip that you can pay for what you want to enter 💰 The winding tower was unfortunately closed due to the corona. We did an underground tour of the viewing mine. Everything was reproduced very authentically, but the feeling of how it was for people to work here unfortunately failed to materialize. The restaurant KUMPELS is highly recommended! Small menu with classic and contemporary dishes. Self-service, very attractive design and delicious 🤤 (Original) Modernes Museum für jung und alt.

The museum is very attractive. We can go into the mining area and explore all the area by walk. They have also a simulator, which give us a real feeling of going into mine. You have chance to see mining equipment, drilling machines, vagons and old telephones, which they used. There is also a nice cafeteria. In the museum there is several valuable things you can see. From the tower you can see the nearst places and city overview.

Today we went to the museum for the second time and it’s just great. Besides all the underground mining shafts with large machinery and spectacular views from the tower top, there is also a very interesting and informative museum area about the history and future of mining from the Stone Age to today. There is also lots of hands on stuff for kids to do and try out. I’d recommend lots of time, as there is so much to see. I’d also suggest giving the snack area a try, as they have pretty original food for the location, which also tastes well and is priced reasonably. Full recommendation. 👌🏿👌🏿

For people interested in the subject, this is a truly excellent museum. Below the museum, you walk around in 1-2 km of very authentic mine galleries filled with all sorts of equipment. I was absolutely convinced that they were real and astounded to find out that it was all artificial. Information both in German and English. Some in writing and some audio info points. On the top there is a panorama view of the surrounding areas. Inside there is more equipment, videos, old photos and information, in more traditional style.

Excellent museum. Takes a full day to discover all exhibitions on geology and mining. Do not overlook to take the stairs at the entry, before the ticket desk. Over half is upstairs without much signage. Free but limited public parking. All exhibitions texts are fully in German and English. Restaurant on the ground floor. Only the mining tour is not wheelchair accessible.

Interesting to explore the way the earth is/was mined for various purposes. Through the little journey, it is understandable the history of mining, politics behind it, machineries used, evolution of mining, drilling, rescuing operations and so on.. Easily accessible by the public transport as well. Enough parking is available around it. Payment by card is accepted.

Fantastic museum! One of the best i've seen during 4 month of my life in NRW. My kids are big fans of big metal vehicle and digging. So it was right place for them. We have spend 4 hours and I could spend more, but kids was overloaded and hungry. Each time when you think that it's the end of exhibition, comes new hall) and that's great. Really enjoyed. Thank you for great job, modern style and special thank you for information in English on every exhibit.

Nice museum to learn about coal mining. I especially liked the tower and mine. Good exhibition spaces but too much for one day and wish we had been recommended in which order to explore the museum, ended up doing most of it backwards.

(Translated by Google) The show mine is great, there are also machine demonstrations and you can even try out the hammer drill yourself. Everything is very authentic. For only 5 Euro entrance. Wirkt alles sehr authentisch. (Translated by Google) It was a very interesting museum, but unfortunately we could not visit the underground area because it was not possible to book a tour at such short notice. We were told that the tours had to be booked 14 days in advance. So watch out for it next time you visit! Nevertheless we spent 3 hours in the rest of the building. The information was presented using a variety of methods, all of which were creative and varied. I can remember the following parts in the museum: art, mining, resources and natural resources, machines and methods, how mining has changed in history, and diseases and the lives of workers. But that wasn't all, there is still a lot to discover! It is definitely worth seeing. Even more with a guided tour underground. In addition, they currently have the action: Give what you can / want. That means you can give as much money as you think. I based myself on the regular admission prices. Also beim nächsten Besuch darauf achten!

The museum has not stopped in all this time but has evolved constantly. What I have to say today I was very surprised how much the small (2-5 years) is offered, I was very happy that the little so much joy in discovery AND ALSO CAN! The staff is very nice And the heart of the museum, the museum director has found very good people here and he has done all the gold right here - that is very noticeable. I think this museum is one of the most important - if not the most important - museum for NRW.

AWESOME is the only word that comes close to describing this museum. Allow plenty of time to see the underground exhibit and learn the history of German coal mining in the upstairs exhibition halls. Staffed by former miners who love telling their stories to visitors. Germany has now closed all it's underground coal mines so this is your only chance to se it how it really was. AAA+++

If you explore the museum without a guide, you have to read a lot, which can be quite exhausting given the size of the exhibition. A little more multimedia could improve that. As has already been done very well in the exhibition section Mining and Natural Resources. (Original) Sehr großes und Interessantes Museum. Abwechslungsreich und Lehrreich gestaltet. (Translated by Google) I am very disappointed with the poor communication when making appointments in times of Corona and the subsequent customer contact. Because I wanted to illustrate the history of mining in my home to a friend from the East, I signed up for an underground tour. The tickets are reserved in a name and you should be there half an hour before the tour. Since I unfortunately couldn't avoid a traffic jam, we were 5 minutes late. I have tried several times in vain to give notice by phone. After waiting in line, it was 15 minutes late. The cash register was manned by 3 people but only one counter was open, so I was surprised that nobody could use the phone. I was informed that the tickets, although there were still 15 minutes until the start of the tour, had already been given to someone else and that there was no space left on that day. No one could or would not offer me an alternative.

What you see in the tunnels was all created for the museum, but it is a really nice walk with impressive constructions and machines. Up in the tower you have a great view on the surroundings. The exhibition rooms show you more of the background. Please note: at cash register they did not accept foreign debit card, in shop they only accept debit card payments over 10 euros. Highly recommended museum!

The structural change and its resulting problems for the "Pott" are also explained. A museum for the whole family. In particular, Martin at the cash register was worth the visit. An original, has to be seen.

(Translated by Google) I liked it. 18 meters deep, then driven 62 meters high, was very exciting. The museum was also very interesting, the whole history of North Rhine-Westphalia, how the shaft was worked at that time and what it all looked like. Recommendable! Empfehlenswert!

(Translated by Google) Very well done museum. You can learn a lot about the history of mining, but "underground" tours must be booked in advance. Unfortunately the one I did was very short, I had hoped for a little more. But only understandable in times of Corona. (Original) Sehr gut gemachtes Museum. (Translated by Google) As always, it was very educational and exciting. Against the background, of course, that my family has seen mining history. However, there are also a lot of exciting things to discover for people who are not directly related to the topic and a good view over the city of Bochum from the winding tower! I enclose a photo of this view.

(Translated by Google) Due to the Corona time, there is currently the “Pay wad you want!” Campaign, where you can choose the admission price. Exhibitions There are four permanent exhibitions that are good and very comprehensive, sometimes a bit overloaded with too many topics and text panels. The videos at the multimedia stations are unfortunately not played correctly. Extras All visitors can go up to the winding tower with an elevator, it is windy and cool there, but you have a good view of Bochum. Unfortunately, you can only get to the mine at the moment if you have booked a tour, it wasn't on the website, we thought that was a shame. Around Unfortunately there is no cloakroom either. Payment by card is possible. The café is very good with a great selection of lunch and cakes, very stylish.

I didn't actually go inside but I wished I had. We only had time for a peak at the region's fantastically impressive last block of goal in the entrance hall and a look at the mining lift from the outside. Impressive. Will be back for a real visit.

Beautiful museum with interesting exhibitions about mining and minerals. I would definitely recommend the tour into the mine, if you understand German. Also, the staff is super friendly and helpful!

  • 5/5 Andre K. 5 years ago on Google
This place is awesome in every regard. First you go deep underground and learn how they mined coal. Pretty much every corner is freely accesable and one can get lost there real quick. I'm not sure if there is an English speaking guide, but it's fun on your own too. One can go up to 62m by elevator afterwards to see the city. I loved it

Amazing museum! There is an incredible amount of things to see and it's all very nicely presented. From the big old mining machines to the artworks, everything is worth a look. Student prices are very affordable (5€). I'd definitely recommend the tour of the mine, because it just makes sense... I mean your in a mining museum after all.

The bergbau museum is a pearl. Congratulations to the museum to make such a great exhibition learning about earth's resources. Tip: take the tour to go down in the mine, a unique experience simulating how mine life was with equipment demonstrations and elevator experience. One attention point: only having German tours is not really international, they should do the tours in both languages german and english at the same time. (English only available in the weekend it seems)

There are audio tours available in English & German that are comical as they are informative. Excellent museum, very interestingly interactive and a must see to help appreciate the area and life of miners
