Once the capital of the early Chalukyan dynasty (6th to 8th centuries), Aihole is a picturesque village on the banks of the Malaprabha river. Variously called Ayyavole & Aryapura in the inscriptions, Aihole is historically famous as the cradle of Hindu temple architecture. There are about 125 temples divided into 22 groups scattered all over the villages and nearby fields. Most of these temples were built between the 6th & 8th centuries and some even earlier Only mere traces of a fort dating from the 6th century can be seen today. A large number of prehistoric sites have been found in Morera Angadigalu, near the Meguti hillocks in Aihole. Excavations near some temples have yielded traces of antique pottery and bases of structures constructed with bricks of pre-Chalukyan times. More temples are being excavated every day bearing witness to the vigorous experimentation on temple architecture which went on at Aihole more than 14 centuries ago

Home to over 125 beautiful Chalukyan temples and monuments, Aihole is a historical site in Bagalkot, Karnataka. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and is surrounded by marvellous sandstone hills and villages on the banks of the Malaprabha River. It was formerly the capital of the Chalukya Dynasty with over 100 Hindu and Jain temples, dating back to around 6th to 12th century. Today, Aihole is a prominent centre for temple architecture and intricate stonework. Aihole, known initially as Ayyavole or Aryapura, played a significant role in Hindu mythology. Besides Hindu and Jain Temples, Aihole boasts of a rock-cut Buddhist monument and a monastery dedicated to Lord Buddha. The towns of Pattadakkal and Badami are located nearby and together, they form a vast circuit to experience the marvel and grandeur of Chalukyan architecture. A few important monuments in Aihole include the Durga Temple, Lad Khan Temple, Ravanaphadi Cave Temples, Huchimalli Temple, Meganagudi group, Gowda Temple and the Huchappayyagudi Temple amongst numerous others.

Aihole (Eye-hole), also referred to as Aivalli, Ahivolal or Aryapura, is a historic site of ancient and medieval era Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments in Karnataka, India that dates from the sixth century through the twelfth century CE.Most of the surviving monuments at the site date from the 7th to 10th centuries. Located around an eponymous small village surrounded by farmlands and sandstone hills, Aihole is a major archaeological site featuring over one hundred and twenty stone and cave temples spread along the Malaprabha river valley, in Bagalakote district. Hunagunda Taluk Distance 35 km . Aihole is 35 kilometres (22 mi) from Badami and about 9.7 kilometres (6.0 mi) from Pattadakal, both of which are major centres of historically important Chalukya monuments. Aihole, along with nearby Badami (Vatapi), emerged by the 6th century as the cradle of experimentation with temple architecture, stone artwork, and construction techniques. This resulted in 16 types of free-standing temples and 4 types of rock-cut shrines. The experimentation in architecture and arts that began in Aihole yielded the group of monuments at Pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over one hundred Aihole temples are Hindu, a few are Jain and one is Buddhist. These were built and coexisted in close proximity. The site is spread over about 5 square kilometres (1.9 sq mi).The Hindu temples are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Surya and other Hindu deities. The Jain Basadi temples are dedicated to Mahavira, Parshvanatha, Neminatha and other Jain Tirthankaras. The Buddhist monument is a temple and small monastery. Both Hindu and Jain monuments include monasteries, as well as social utilities such as stepwell water tanks with artistic carvings near major temples.

Heralded as the ‘cradle of Hindu/ Dravidian temple architecture’, Aihole is a tranquil village on the banks of Malaprabha River. Hundreds of temples pepper the villages and fields nearby. The most noteworthy among them is the Durga Temple composed of a semicircular apse, an elevated plinth and a gallery encircling the sanctum.

Best one. Aihole heritage sites are numerous and distributed over this charming community, and some of them can be shocking to view... Since they may come suddenly out of nowhere around a tight corner/bus route. A must-see location.

The 1st power centre of early chalukyas, Aihole has many dilapidated temple structures, many tucked in present day settlements and slums. ASI maintains a beautiful complex with the Durg temple(dedicated to Sun God) as the icon. It's a remarkable place to understand and realise the evolution of Hindu temple architecture in India. 35kms from Badami, bus frequency is very poor. So better take a private transport like auto or taxi. There are many places around Aihole and a private vehicle fits perfectly. Don't miss Ravana phadi caves in Aihole...not so big, but you will find wonderful sculptures here

The ruins of Aihole along with temple in it stands testament to the long lost glory of Indian culture. Be it stone carvings, rock sculptures or the placement of these to form one temple without any modern equipments shows our ancestors were intelligent and smart enough to make proper use of available resources in their disposal. Today they are still standing as a witness to their knowledge, intelligence and hardwork. We need to sustain these and take care of the structures, monuments for our future generations. Hope we do our park and don't expect the government to maintaining all the cleanliness and stuff. Do your bit.

It’s a large open museum. It has a charming architecture. You can cover Aihole with Badami and Pattadakal. Must visit at least once.

Somewhat less well kept than Pattadakal premises but the aura is different because aihole heritage sites are multiple and spread across this quaint village and some of them can be surprising to behold... as they may appear suddenly out of nowhere around a tight corner/bus route. A must visit place.

One of the beautiful place you maut visit if you are lover of historical places. This place can be clubbed with Badami and Patthadakkal and can be covered in a single day. You would love to see the architectural wonders here. The entire complex can be covered decently within one or two hours at most. There is a KSTDC hotel nearby for refreshments and lunch. But the service is not so good.
