The cafe is bang opposite to the cathedral and a lovely sit down place for dine in. It’s a self service for ordering and delivered to the table we choose to sit. The salmon soup was amazing and a must try so to say. The salmon on the black bread is a cold sand which I loved for its taste, presentation and freshness. The reindeer stew wasn’t of my linking though have taste reindeer in Italy which was lovely. No complaints as it was a minced meat. The blueberry tart was an excellent choice as desert. The interior is well done and window side seating. Onlooking cathedral is awesome view and most sort after.

Very delicious food and generous portions! Staff is very nice and helpful. You can have a breakfast with a view at Senator Square. Breakfast also comes with fresh fruits and pot of jam which makes it really complete

Great quality food, great quality service! I had the reindeer stew and my friend had the salmon soup - both were delicious! The food also showed up 5 minutes after we ordered, and was super fresh! Would highly recommend!

It is really nice cafe with great atmosphere and view, normally it has more options on desserts and cake but it also has main Finnish main dishes like salmon soup and reindeer stew. We have also tried lemon pie. They offer also free water

Staff was very kind. I heard that hot foods like salmon soup are served after noon but I could place an order around 11:30. Meatballs are great. It was much heavier than I thought. I already miss the plate.

Very cozy cafe in the city center with nice view on Helsinki Cathedral. Good place to try traditional finnish food and have a romantic date dinner. Prices are average and food is great! Tasted salmon soup, reindeer stew, Karelian pasty and blueberry pie. Everything was delicious! Definitely recommend this place!

Lovely little cafe with delicious cakes!! We tried the Blueberry cake, and also the Lingonberry cake and both cakes were amazing!! Both were easily 4/5 and I also recommend the Blueberry cake as others have said as well. A must try.

Location location location. They are right in front of the Helsinki cathedral and you can enjoy good food at window seats. They have great all day snack as well as desserts.

The Mother Earth breakfast set is very tasty and filling and has a decent price. The avocado could have used some salt, though. The cafeteria was so full of people and noisy that our 4-people group had difficulties hearing each other.

Lovely, historic cafe in Helsinki. If you want to dine in a location with beautiful views of the Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square, you can come here for either brunch or some sweet treats. They also serve the local Karelian Pie as a savory option, but I went for a Lingonberry pie with a side of vanilla custard and a cup of a Flat White. The Lingonberry pie was delicious, but the flat white is just alright (not specialty coffee). Overall, I’m glad I still managed to come to Cafe Engel for a quick snack before heading out of Helsinki.

Favorite place to have traditional Finnish Salmon Soup (lohikeitto) with someone special. The view from the cafe overlooking the Helsinki Cathedral is almost idyllic, and the ambience is soothing. Amazing delights and wonderful service. Highly recommend :)

We tried three different cakes and they tasted good but they were really overpriced. Also you couldn't see the price and ingredients for each cake so you had to ask from the waitress and it wasn't easy to choose like that. We wanted to sit next to the window as people were leaving when we arrived but the waitress moved someone else there and gave another place to us. The communication was weird. The coffee was unlimited, though. Can't recommend for a daily coffeeshop visit.

We went in on New Year's Day without much expectation but the atmosphere was great and the prices were reasonable. If you're lucky enough get a seat by the window to enjoy views of the cathedral.

9 hour layover in Helsinki. We needed food, fast, yummy and traditional (oh..and budget friendly). Cafe Engel saved the day. The salmon soup was delicious & the service was very attentive and kind! The hot chocolate was creamy, not overly sweet. Not my typical “hipster spot” but it was oh so good +Portion size +Speed +Customer Service

We have visited this café on many occasions and will continue to do so. It is very easy to find (opposite the cathedral) so has often been a meeting point. It is not expensive, whilst the standards are very high. The menu does not seem to change but the food is consistently very nice. Staff are very friendly, and there is always a lively and welcoming atmosphere,

By Finnish standards this is the best and my favourite coffee shop to go to. Very friendly staff (their greatest asset) and they do table service. A very nice selection of signature breakfast choices. Maybe a bit pricey just like everything is in Helsinki.. They’re also dog friendly (my chihuahua loves to go here). 🐕

Very disappointed by my recent dine-in experience here. In summary, the service was excellent, but the food was not good. I read previous reviews mentioning that the cakes here were good, so I ordered a mango cheesecake. It was surprisingly bad! It was quite obvious that the cake had been sitting out for a very long time. The top layer was supposed to be a supple mango gelatin, but the texture was rough like a dehydrated fruit. The cheesecake component itself was very dense, dry, and crumbly. The bottom layer of the crust was hard. It was very difficult to cut through with my fork. After my first bite and having other people at my table confirm my observations, I ended up sending it back to the kitchen. For the price (it was nearly 9€) it was definitely not worth it! However, the staff were very nice and offered me a different cake from the display and a full refund. I will give them high marks for customer service. I chose the Runeberg torte as my replacement, however that was disappointingly dry and hard as well. The banana chocolate cake my friend chose was much better than the cakes I ordered, and moist. The carrot cake was also decent. However for the price of the cakes, and with the historical reputation of this cafe, I expected a much higher quality. My hope is that the cafe will do a quality control check of their food offerings before selling it to the public. The cafe itself has nice views of the Helsinki cathedral. Seating can be quite cramped, as there are a lot of tables squished close together. This makes it hard to navigate during the winter, when lots of people have thick jackets.

Super friendly staff! She was so helpful so she even described all the desserts on the display one by one. We had cafe au lait, Finnish rye pastry with egg, cinnamon roll and a slice of chocolate cake. All were very fresh and delicious. My fav was of course the cinnamon roll and the savoury pastry. The coffees were good too!

Nice coffee, good food, FANTASTIC location. It also has a classical cinema that screens artistic international movies. During Summer time they organize a summer cinema in their courtyard.

Been here for lunch a few times. They have a pretty fixed lunch menu, with an additional special of the week. Always good quality, so you know what you are getting. Their cakes are also nice, try one with your coffee if you decide to pop in!

The best apple cake I've ever eaten in my life, the apple juice is fantastic and the waitress who work there is very very kind. I can not wait to back to eat in that café

Lovely coffee place across the Senate Square and the Helsinki Cathedral that brings back memories from Vienna! If lucky to get a table by the window, beside your meal or drink, you’ll also enjoy watching the flow of people, trams and lively tourists passing by and taking pictures in the Square! Coffee and blueberry cake - both delicious! Prices were quite democratic for Finland 🇫🇮 and the service was friendly. Would love to be back in summer!

We accidentally came across this place while we were visiting Helsinki Cathedral and loved it! The staff was super nice, since I traveled with a child they offered small portion to us as well looking for window seat. If you are visiting Helsinki, please to stop at this place. You will not be disappointed 😊

You pay for the Dome-View. Had a very poor, very overpriced breakfast. Only the croissant was good but also couldn’t justify the 16,50€ for a breakfast. Ridiculous! Cake was good but also way too expensive.

A bit pricey, but eggs and bacon come out perfectly cooked, they serve breakfast all day on Saturday and Sunday, and the staff is nice.

Cosy little coffe with average price, located in front of the central plaza. Its offers good coffee (Finland Standards), and its besides a cinema so if you have time check out a good movie. (Independent cinema)
