Today was my 8 year old boys birthday and so we visited the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg PA. This Museum is fantastic for every train love both old and young. The have big trains, Little trains and even trains you can control. There are hands on activity in the front of the Museum for kids. While walking around and learning about the different trains you can even peak inside some of the cars and see what they would've looked like while they operated. This place is definitely a family friendly place and so much fun to do.

I haven't been here since I was a kid, probably 45 years ago... it was definitely interesting to see it through an adults eyes today. They have some very nice displays inside, and very welcoming staff. You can definitely spend a full day here and not get bored. The equipment outside is also pretty interesting as well, though many need A LOT of work, but it is taking shape. I was able to see some items on particular cars and engines that filled in a lot of blanks for me on making their ride on size models. Definitely a worthwhile experience. I need to go back and catch an actual ride too one of these days!

This place is SO cool. Lots of train themed things around the area. 10 bucks for adults to get in but it's well worth it. There are a bunch of restored trains to see and you can go outside and see more.

The best Train museum I’ve ever visited. This place was amazing. Take your time to read every sign and soak up the history on display. Talk with those that work there to hear more knowledge and facts. Fun for both train enthusiast or those who just find them an interesting piece of history. The layout is incredible. An absolute must for those who are passionate about Trains.

So much to say about this train museum. It was great, the engines were all so well restored. First thing to do is go up to the second floor where you can see all of the engines from a platform. This hives you a bird's eye view. Also ho to the outdoor rail yard to see engines they hope to restore in the future. There was a short film and a station to see. A few you could visit. I wish there were more you could look into. Well worth the visit. Highly recommend.

I have been here many many times. My grandson, Eli, started going when he was two and now he is four. It’s $10 per adult and for 3-12 it’s $8. Under 3 is free. I got him into the railroad and trains through my working in the railroad industry for a legal firm and then working at SEPTA for a few years contract. I enjoy train tracking with him and it’s grown from regional rail, the blue line and trolleys to freights and how to locate them. Eli and I are big fans of the Big Boy from UP. We both educated ourselves on every kind of cargo cars and what they are called. We also include Amtrak because it’s part of the Northeast Corridor and goes by right where I once lived. We will be going again to Strasburg for the annual “A Day Out With Thomas” scheduled for next month. Strasburg RR Museum is a wonderful place to visit and spend time in and outside. Eli’s first visit to now, he’s educated himself so much on what the trains do and the safety people need to take. You definitely need a few hours to really enjoy it. If you’re going to walk the outside as well, the last time you can go outside for the day I believe is 45 minutes before closing at 4. You need at least that much time outside too. If you have time, go over to the railroad station and take a ride on the steam train. The caboose is my favorite.

Great collection of steam, diesel and electric trains. I’ve been back many times because there’s always something I didn’t spend time on my previous visits. Case in point, I haven’t spent any time looking at the works-in-progress out in the yard. Last year my son and I attended a late night showing of Polar Express here. It was a wonderful experience to see the movie right in the middle of all of the real trains. They served popcorn and hot chocolate which was enjoyed by young and old alike.

Chocked full of history. You don't need to be a train buff to enjoy the history packed into this place. Take a moment, stop and read a few placards.. It might be a nice surprise, some of the fascinating things you will learn. Ask some questions, seek out and talk to some of the volunteers who work to help keep up and restore many of these old engines and rail cars. Most of them know details you won't find in the average book...

This is a really cool museum. I learned a lot while I was there. They have actual real life sized trains, mini train models, and a fake old Main Street. It’s a cool place to take pictures. Kids will love it. It’s also very friendly to those who require assisted mobility. All the cool trains are in a single level room with lots of space to navigate. There is also an elevator to the second floor. My only gripe is that the hours are very limited. It closes at 4pm every day.

This place is a paradise for train lovers. It has a lot of antique train displays with detailed descriptions of its history. You will need at least 1.5 hours to see all the trains here. A great place to visit if passing by Lancaster PA.

My grandson and I loved the Railroad Museum! It is very clean and thoughtfully laid out. They had many real trains, lots of legos put together into a little town, and to play with. The second floor was full of working model trains, too.. My grandson was free, and I paid $9. It was well worth it!!

Great visit! After spending part of our morning riding the Strasburg Railroad, we decided to walk across the street and spend some time in the museum. I was very happy to see that the museum was very affordable at $10 for adults (AAA members save an additional $1). That made the visit well worth the cost. Once inside you can't help but be amazed by the array of trains from different eras dating back to the 1800s with a collection of the earliest wooden cars. For obvious reasons, you can't walk through the cars themselves, but there are many opportunities to walk up steps and peek inside. In addition to the many trains, you can walk through replicas of train stations, waiting rooms, and baggage areas. There are also areas where model trains ride across the artificial cities and rural landscapes -- some of which you can operate yourself. This is a great place for kids. We had a smile on our faces watching their faces light up in delight as they entered the museum. Definitely make this part of your visit to the Lancaster area.

My son and went here on one of his spring breaks. He has always been a fan of trains so I surprised him with a trip here and we had fun. They staff was mostly pleasant and friendly. It wasn’t too busy on the day we went but I’m not sure how busy it is normally. The price of entrance was reasonable. The museum is amazing. You can go inside a lot of the trains and see how they would look at the time they were used. There is historical information everywhere so the trip can be educational and fun. I recommend this fun outing and I want to go again one day!

Attended the Rails and Ales fund raiser for the museum. Great set up, there were breweries set up around the museum and food trucks out back. You could walk the whole place as you look and taste various beers from local breweries. It was awesome, haven't been to this place for more than 30 years. Even better than I remember. Highly recommend visiting anytime. Can't wait to bring my grandson, who'll be the 4th generation coming here to see all the trains.

If you've never been up close and personal with a train, then you might want to try them on! You see them go by when your driving but you never really get to see them up close and personal! I grew up with trains and they are awesome! The size the power, their overall greatness should be admired! My husband and I went to the museum and took our grt grdson. He's one and is very curious about everything! Needless to say he had a ball checking everything out! From looking at displays to climbing over the seats, he was happy! We even took him up inside one of the engines. He sat in the drivers seat an got to play driver! When we got done in the museum, we took a trainride through the country side, about 45 minutes long. He loved it! He was able to see horses an cows and ducks in the tall grass! He took it all in. It was a great day for us all! Lots of great memories! Highly recommend everyone to visit! It was a great time!!!🥰💖

The biggest rail museum I have ever been to! Great place to visit! The museum features over 100 locomotives and railway cars that you can see up close and many of which you can actually enter into and look around in. They also feature daily train rides and excursions on the grounds across from the museum itself. The museum is located on the east side of the town of Strasburg, Pennsylvania, in Lancaster County along PA Route 741. My favorite locomotive on display here is the Virginia and Truckee Railroad number 20, "Tahoe," which dates back to 1875. It is a 2-6-0 from the early age of steam engines when they sported the big balloon smoke stacks. Gorgeous! Entry fees are a very reasonable $10 for adults. Nearby attractions include Sight and Sound Theaters, many operating Amish farms, and the Mennonite Life Visitors Center featuring a reconstruction of the Jewish Tabernacle constructed in the book of Exodus.

Really well maintained museum with trains that are indoor well preserved. A great hand on with G scale trains for kids to play with switch controls. A lot of displays explaining about locomotives, trains, railroad industry, main persons in rail history, and parts that make the train. A lot of different types of trains to see throughout PA history. One star less because I wish there were more stairs to see the interior of the trains than view from the ground. I would like to suggest the museum to sell posters that hang in the hallway connecting into the warehouse from the lobby. These posters are well designed and beautiful.

Great place to spend some time, lots of opportunities to learn and explore, include up close climbing into, out of, and on old train engines and cars. We went on a rainy day and didn’t feel like we were missing anything, overall a really enjoyable experience.

Great day! Perfect experience for my 7 year old daughter. She's never been on or near a train. We sat on the club car and brought our own food and drinks. Definitely wear your walking shoes. So much to see!

Visited with my 2 year old son. Wasn't sure if there'd be much to do for kids his age, but he loved going inside the trains and the various kids activities throughout.

The train museum was amazing! As soon as you enter you get the smell of iron and steel and grease. Being right there to touch an old steam powdered lomcotive kinda of propels you back in time. We then went across the street on Santa's Paradise Express Christmas ride. Hearing steam engine chugging along was amazing. Cars even have wood burning stove. Even got to see Santa himself. Diffently a wonderful experience.

My husband and I visited on Friday, June 9th. It was not crowded. The trains are amazing! The rich history of railroading in Pennsylvania is fascinating. The place is huge. Wear supportive shoes. Great for kids. There is a snack area inside. There is a gift shop as well.

Very cool spot. We got free tickets through the library and brought our 2 y/o and 10 m/o. There are lots of big, historic trains, a few that you can go in and see into, and a small hands-on area.

Spent about 2 hours walking around. Great place. Lots of trains to see. My 2 kids age 4 and 8 loved it. Staff was super friendly. It's definitely worth the stop. Great price.

Very interactive for adults and children. More trains to see than the NC or VA transportation museum. Great value for the price of admission. Good hour and half visit. Didn't read everything.

Great place to spend a few hours. There's diesel type trains you're able to view and step upon. A spacious place to interact with the vehicles and explore. There's those props to make it seem like you're in that time period with designs built all around. Toy Railroads trains to control and a giant working rail circle outside.

I could spend all day walking around this museum. There is so much to see and learn about trains and its impact on travel and transport. I was also pleased they have a passenger train still in operation. It was a memorable experience.

It was a good ride back into history of locomotives going to this museum. There were many rail engines on display that dated way back into 1900s. The history video was nice and the miniature train set was extraordinary. You can tell that a great deal of effort went into preparing the long and complicated train set, I was simply amazed looking at it and the attention to detail was superb. I wish they allowed visitors into the engines, which would have been great to view all controls. I visited over summer weekend and it was busy and little crowded. Kids will definitely love this place.

Lovely train museum next to the Strasburg Railroad. We went for their Rails & Ales event which had quite a few local breweries showing off their brews. You received a cute little mug for tastings. There were also food trucks to purchase food. Can't wait for the next one!

We came here on a Friday afternoon in the middle of February. Which meant that we almost had the place to ourselves. Even if there were more people, it is spacious enough that a few school groups would not have mattered. While the exhibits were very well done, our two favorite things were the model train exhibit, which had the most detailed and realistic landscapes, and the exhibit where you could actually stand under a train to see the mechanics. It was too cold and windy to really spend any decent time outside, but there was plenty to see in the rail yard. If not pressed for time, we could have gone around the place a 2nd time, and learned a bunch more. For $10 per person over 12 years old, there was a lot of bang for the buck. My only issue is that it's a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the front door. The only thing that would have made this trip better was if we were there on a Saturday, or during the regular season, so that we could have taken a ride on the Strasburg Railroad. The two actually go hand in hand.

My husband and I really enjoyed this museum! The trains are enormous and they have ones you can go in. The only thing I had a hard time with was that the handicapped parking is a little bit far from the entrance, otherwise I loved it and will be back with my daughter

  • 5/5 Joe L. 2 years ago on Google
I've been here here a few times. There is so much to see for any train enthusiast. They do a great job in demonstrating how trains were so important in the history of our country. Plenty of trains inside the museum and a huge train yard outside to visit. My only complaint is I wish they would allow visitors to actually step on /walk through the trains in the museum. Definitely worth checking out if you're near Lancaster and you can take a train ride across the street on the Strasburg Railroad.
