The three-day Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) ranks as one of the most significant events in American History. I have visited the battlefield three times, and each time I come away more awed than the previous time. Every American should witness and reflect on the site where over 160,000 Americans attempted to slaughter each other. It is difficult to overstate the magnitude of the battle. General Robert E. Lee, the Confederate General, led an army of 75,000 men and was confronted by 85,000 Union Soldiers commanded by General George Meade. Union casualties totaled 23,000, and the Confederates lost 25,000. The best way to see the National Park is by following the auto tour and stopping at locations of special interest. Before you go, watch the 1993 movie Gettysburg starring Martin Sheen to get an overview of the battle. The defense of Little Round Top by Union Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain on July 2 and Pickettโ€™s Charge on Cemetery Ridge are dramatically portrayed in the film, and both places are excellent spots for reflection and photos. Both make excellent sunset photos. We chose to photograph Cemetery Ridge at sunset and Little Round Top at sunrise. Gettysburg National Military Park should be seen by all Americans. We visited July 27-28, 2021. Visit in July or August so you can experience the same heat they felt.

Loved it here, there is so much to see it's helpful to have more than 1 day unless you really like cramming a bunch of things into a day. We bought into an app for 5 different driving tours including the 1 that u can buy at the visitors center. It was definitely the way to go, the tours give you so much detail about what was going on during the battle you can actually get a sense of what it might have been like. We also did a ghost walking tour with Gettysburg Ghost Tours, we did the battle cry tour, it was really interesting to hear some of the detail behind the scenes of the battle. Our guide was awesome and knew so much it was daunting. Well worth the money and even if your not that into history this place is pretty interesting.

We spent the day driving along the auto tour and seeing all the battlefield sites. The monuments were amazing. I really liked how each state had a monument. This was such an amazing experience and something we wanted to see. It was interesting driving in the historic areas and seeing homes that had Civil War damage, especially the building with a cannonball still in it. The signage throughout Gettysburg was well done. The city showed how much they respected the land. There was no graffiti or disrespect and no trash anywhere. The pride was evident. As you drive throughout the area, you see kiosks or monuments everywhere. You could spend a week here easily.

This is a very historic battlefield and the history associated with it is fascinating. Budget a few hours especially if you are interested in driving around the battlefield to see all of the areas important in the evolution of the battle. The monuments and trail are really nice and it's amazing to see the landscape that the battles occurred upon. While all of these elements are terrific, the Visitor Center really has become a tourist trap and was not like this when I visited about 20+ years ago. While you can look at some exhibits for free, the museum is only seen by a fee, but I would be happy to get to get into the site overall without having to pay for each element. The store is also incredibly kitschy with lots of junky souvenirs. If this had been less touristy, this battlefield would have retained its original charm.

Finally made it to Gettysburg after years of being on my National Parks to visit list, and did not disappoint. Truly inspiring, highly educational, and gratifying. Can be a very extensive dive, as there is much to experience if really interested or can be equally appreciated in a shortened visit. I would highly recommend a visit to the National Military Park Museum and Visitors Center, with a pass to the film, Cyclorama, and museum exhibits. Also, there is a terrific self guided audio auto tour that is available on the National Parks App that can be enjoyed to your own leisure and followed chronologically through the day to day accounts of the 3 day war. Plenty of hiking and bike riding, and so much more! A Park to really behold!

What really surprised me was how many monuments are here. This can all be done in one day but two days would definitely let you read everything. Great battlefield. I did the bus tour and it was informative but there was only a couple stops. If I did it again I would do the car tour so I could stop whenever I wanted.

A must visit place for sure! Full of history and beautiful sights. The self drive tour was actually easy to follow. You could hire a personal tour guide to ride with or take the bus tour from the visitor center. It took a decent whole day to go through the entire park but itโ€™s worth of time for sure. Great place to have your kids to learn the history of this nation in person not just reading it from the book or online.

This park is amazing for those who are interested in the American Civil War. There are so many monuments to see both by car or by foot and also from look out towers! There are reproductions as well as original cannons from the war. There is so much to see and learn about here, it could easily take multiple days to absorb it all.

Nothing really prepares you for the size of this battlefield or the incredible loss of life. It is heartwrenching and somber. The memorials, from both sides, are beautiful. This was my first time here. Ended up doing the auto tour (you drive around in a 20+ mile loop visiting check points for key areas during the battle). Took over 3 hours, and even with that there were so many things we didn't see (memorials, hiking trails, horse hack, museums, etcetera). I suggest bringing snacks, water and very comfortable hiking/walking shoes. I don't know if this would be appropriate for young children, as it is basically driving through a massive cemetery.

Sobering experience. When you think of the loss that happened, it touches the heart. We spent half a day driving through the battlefield using the Gettysburg Tour app ($15 to purchase and well worth it) All of the monuments and scenery are well preserved. The scenery is beautiful, and the park well kept. Highly recommend if your in the area to drive through.

Had a good time at the park. Paid for the personal tour guide to drive my car and give a tour; well worth it to me. If youโ€™re a history buff, I highly suggest that tour. We were there during the slow season and a lot of stuff was closed. But theyโ€™re was still plenty to see.

I visited the park Memorial weekend with my three teenage boys ranging in ages of 14-17. We made our first stop the visitors center where of course we did a stamped penny! We agreed on doing the auto tour and bought the CD for about $32. It took us about 4.5 hrs but we also enjoyed exiting the vehicle and doing anything that involved hiking or climbing.

Place is full of history and tells the story well. I recommend the movie and painting. They are very well done. They have an audio tour that you can use for free from the NPS app as you drive around.

Amazing. A must see in your lifetime. So much to do and see. For the young and old. You need more than a day to see it all. Bring your bikes and scooters. The visitor center is state of the art. Prices are very good. See you there.

We did the ghostly images tour. It was a little bit different then the other audio tour Iโ€™ve done. I was able to see a couple new buildings Iโ€™ve never seen before. I love taking photos here as well. Itโ€™s beautiful. You would never imagine such tragedy happened here. I think itโ€™s very educational and I learn something new every time I come to Gettysburg.

This had been high on my list of places that I wanted to see for a few years now since I moved to the northeast. It was well worth the wait and more. It's so sad that so many lost their lives on these fields. You can almost hear the cries in the wind. I went on a cold day and as the wind blew I just did my best to take it all in. There is a lot to see here so it can easily fill up a whole day. It's an important place that everyone should visit at least once. It can be a bit of a drive from the bigger cities but still very worth it/.

We love it here! You can spend hours and even days touring the battlefield. If you aren't able to splurg for a tour guide, grab the audio tour or just use Google to navigate. The history here is amazing and something that should be taught to all generations and not forgotten or rewritten.

Took a day trip to the battlefield and absolutely loved it. Explored the visitor center and the exhibits there before taking the self guided Auto tour. Would highly recommend it, the signs are easy to follow and it gives a great explanation of how the battle unfolded as you drive around to the various sites. The auto tour is free as well, all you have to do is download the NPS app. Be aware though that the tour took about 3 hours and exploring the whole park took about 5 hours. For such a beautiful place itโ€™s hard to believe the carnage that took place there.

This is one of the largest battles of the war between the States. I took the tour bus and it had a guide. This is the first time I have ever had a tour guide. He explained everything well and then told us that the place of one of the most important battles would be closed for 6 months as the worked on LITTLE ROUND TOP the scene of Pickets charge and the 20th maine.

Thankfully, one of the most well-preserved of all the battlefields from the War Between the States. Many in the South have been cleared for development or otherwise desecrated, but this one was already in motion to be preserved only one year after the battle, while the war was still going on. I stopped through while heading north on US-15, Gettysburg Pike, and only visited the Confederate side of things (well, as a Virginian but also since there are one-ways I didnโ€™t realise) since I didnโ€™t have too much time to explore the whole thing, as the engaged history fan would need all day to do so. I instead cycled and walked a bit, which wasnโ€™t too bad. Itโ€™s always busy, even on a cold, windy, and snowy day as the one that I did. Many monuments and memorials to the soldiers, Iโ€™m always pleased to see how many people also respect them. Must visit as an American or simply an appreciator of history. Cheers.

This entire place is impressive and really hard to comprehend what happened during those battles. I'm a combat veteran and I still have a difficult time imagining the battles and just how awful it must have been. The auto tours do a really good job at taking you through the events as they happened. If you love history you'll enjoy this place. You can tell the volunteers at the different locations love being able to share what they know about the battle at Gettysburg.

Monumental National Military Park, it is a must for everyone who is interested in the history of the United States of America. I was even on a personal tour with Tom Vossler. Loved both his broad knowledge and also his personality. Top guy in every aspects.

The museum has a fantastic collection that really puts things into perspective for those who may not know a lot about the Civil War. We used the NPS app to drive ourselves through the battlefield. I really liked that we could take our time and see things at our own pace, using the app as our guide.

Wow, my second time here and it is still amazing. First off this is a very large park. Plan on walking a lot. If you don't wish to walk, you can easily drive the route which has many stops along the way. The history here is incredible, you can actually feel it. The feel the energy as you stand on these grounds. The staff is friendly and helpful and the monuments are in great shape. Expect to spend the whole day here.

Truly a wonderful and fascinating experience. I had never been but my father is a big history buff so it was nice to go with him. We got an absolutely wonderful guide named Jasan. It is a very beautiful and humbling place. When you are standing on top of the Devil's Den and thing about how many Americans on both sides died right where you stand really is a truly humbling experience. I recommend everyone visit this hallowed ground at least once in their life. Be respectful. Dont leave trash or cigarette butts laying around. Treat this place with the reverence it earned through the amount of blood shed here.

Happened to be driving through and had to check this place off my bucket list. It is very difficult to explain the weight of the feeling that comes over you when what you learned about in school and watched in movies becomes real in front of your eyes. I only had time for a quick stop, but would love to research and plan a vacation to this beautiful town.

Had a great time seeing the history! All though I donโ€™t recommend the guided tour unless you want to be mislead the facts told are to favor the north and make the south out to be animals much of the northern army statues have been well kept some of the southโ€™s statues are in terrible shape corrosion is evident.. p.s. donโ€™t bring your pets we brought our lap dog and he was covered in ticks you would think they would treat the areas for ticks

This visit was an incredible experience. The amount of history it has to offer will leave a history buff well satisfied. The amount of parking spots to pull off and view the monuments/points of interest were very helpful. The park was very well kept up, kudos to the staff. I think everyone should experience the Gettysburg National Military Park at least once in their life.

The park is very educational and a great place to hike, bike, horse ride, or drive through. Some of the monuments are very elaborate and really cool to see. Overall a really great experience, but make sure to pace yourself during a hike.

If you love history, this is the place to go. You could take days to see you at all, there are tons of statues, monuments and cannons all over the place. I did a two hour bus tour and it was so informative. Plan to go through the park over two days if you want to see most of it.

The Gettysburg National Military park is vast. You can walk it. There are trails available. You can also drive a circuit that allows you to stop at the various memorials. It is one way and thru traffic stays to the left. There is parking available on the right. There is a map available at the museum that details where the different memorials are located. You may have to drive thru part of the town in order to access all of the park. If you collect stamps for US National Parks book they are available at the desk to the left as you enter the museum.

Absolutely mind-blowing experience. I highly recommend you make the effort to see the cyclorama and then actually walk Pickett's Charge. Unimaginable to me that Soldiers could be ordered across that unforgiving land. The bravery exhibited by the rebels as well as the Union Soldiers cannot be understated. Simply amazing experience.
