I have been to Dar El Jeld several times because the rooftop view is lovely, but I will never be going back. This summer their service has been awful. When we entered the hotel 2 days ago, we were told there was no room on the rooftop. We went up to see the view, and the whole rooftop was empty with only 2 tables occupied. The waiters let us sit down but then scowled and ignored us. They did not bring a menu. I ordered three cocktails for us without a menu and it took 40 minutes for the cocktails to arrive. The waiters continued ignoring us so we did not eat. We asked for the bill 3 times and it did not come. When we walked inside to pay, we were told the till was broken. A very disappointing experience.

For the restaurant- We are a family travelling in from London. Food was decent but the service made that hardly worthwhile. On entering we were seated away to a side. We don't speak the language, so understand there is a barrier but the waiters were dismissive and rude. No effort made for even so much as a smile. During the rushed meal, we witnessed waiters rush back and have an argument near where we are seated- away from their clearly more important customers seated in the middle and in front of us. They had their backs turned to us the whole time whilst serving other guests in a completely different manner, didn't bother to give us a drinks menu and even took a plate away from me whilst I was in the middle of eating! Imagine- bread in hand, still chewing and having your plate moved away?! And then placed our meals there. It felt as though the experience and respect received was dependant on your background. We thought it best to ask for the bill, and even here where we were visibly diaspointed and asked if there was something wrong with us as to why we where receiving such poor treatment the response was a shrug rather than genuinely looking to see what had gone wrong or concerned at the poor experience. I just find for a restaurant that has a whole street named after them and such glowing recommendations from locals, it is a shame that they presented the Tunisian hospitality is such a poor way to first time visitors and left such a negative impression on us.

This review is for the traditional restaurant. I felt very welcomed by the staff, who were very useful in helping us decide what to order. I really liked the atmosphere as well. Throughout our dinner, someone was playing what I'm assuming was a zither. The food was really good, from starters to deserts. A must-try for anyone looking to experience a "fancier" traditional cuisine.

(Translated by Google) I spent one night in Dar El Jeld: A NIGHTMARE. In 24 hours, I spent no less than 1000DT between the room, the spa, the restaurant, the airport shuttle ... All this to make me steal my clothes in this 5-star hotel! I had the misfortune to forget clothes in the closet of my suite. Once in Paris, when I notice it, I immediately call the hotel, which tells me to take charge of the situation. Two days later, no news. After several unsuccessful calls, I contacted Lotfi Hamadi by putting a public comment on his Facebook page to FINALLY get an answer, he put me in touch with a certain Miss Sélima, "Guest relation manager" (with a copy neither more nor less than the manager, Mr. Ezzedine Abdelkefi) who told me that nothing had been found in the suite, without further explanation. After VERY many emails left unanswered to try to understand this ubiquitous situation, they deigned to answer me that their insurance could take care of this theft. I then send them invoices and photos of the goods in question. To this day, I remain without news. It’s a shame to have your belongings stolen from an establishment of such standing, but what shocks me even more is the treatment of the situation by the managers of the hotel. My experience in the restaurant was also catastrophic: the waiter forgot to transmit our order to the kitchens, we waited almost 3 hours to have our dishes! Never again will I set foot in this hotel and I can only strongly recommend it, there are superb establishments in Sidi Bou Said with sea views as a bonus!

(Translated by Google) Nice and great restaurant. Very popular in Tunisia. The meats are good quality and delicious. The octopus salad was very nice. Unfortunately it was a bit difficult to find the place very crowded. Try booking on their website. Now it's up to you to make a reservation. (Original) Güzel ve büyük bir restoran. Such a bizarre experience. Or how to get rid of paying customers. 🤣 We used to eat at Dar El Jeld restaurant in the past. This time, on our first visit in Tunisia in 5 years, and our last day we wanted to have some drinks at the hotel’s rooftop. Tunisian friends told us it’s great. We came on a weekday at 16:15 in the afternoon. Well, we couldn’t even enter the hotel. A young guy standing by the entrance door asked us if we had reservations. We said no, just coming for afternoon drinks at the rooftop. No way, we can’t go in. I was incredulous, especially after reading other reviews here. It’s past lunch time, not yet sunset, long way to dinner, and the rooftop is full ? Yes, apparently the rooftop was FULL that day, at that time. I was planning to call the hotel right now, right there to confirm a reservation, but my husband was just fed up, and said we’re never going back there.

Ate at the rooftop restaurant and with full confidence, I honestly believe this was the worst food experience I’ve had in Tunisia. The staff are nice but extremely pretentious and barely want to communicate with you if you’re not European. They don’t speak Tunisian even when you speak to them in their own language. Our waiter never came to check up on us once, but went to the tables around us multiple times to refill people’s wine glasses. Their “Tunisian” food was quite literally terrible. The couscous was so sweet it tasted like dessert, they should be embarrassed to serve this. Our appetizers also seemed to have recycled bread from another table that didn’t finish their food. Cheap quality appetizers and ingredients. Shameful to see a restaurant in Tunis treat it’s own people with less respect than the tourists.

I ate at the roof top restaurant. It is not easy to get there if you are with family and kids. The Atmosphere is good if you are European and looking for something different. The food was not tasty even though we tried 4 different dishes. The food compared to quality and quantity is very very expensive. 90 TD for a normal plate of Cuscos!!!, You can get very delicious Cuscos in a 5 star restaurant with only 30 TD, and 15-20 TD in public places with better taste. It is not recommended. The restaurant on the ground floor is much better and the food is tasty, you may try that one, not the rooftop.

This is a review of the hotel and both restaurants. We have now stayed in the second time in Dar El Jeld, in a different suite. We really like this gorgeous place, it is like an oasis in the hustle of Tunis. But bring sleeping mask and ear plugs: the first room was rather too bright, and second too noisy during the night. We like the rooftop restaurant a lot. We ate twice in the traditional one: first time excellent, second time nothing special. --- That being said, we would always gladly return to Dar El Jeld and wholeheartedly recommend the place to anybody.

Has very high expectations for restaurant. Firstly, the bread was stale, and it took the entire meal for them to bring new bread. I asked for my plate to be vegetarian, and there was meat inside, so I had to wait to eat. The live musician was great, but the restaurant felt like it was trying too hard to make Tunisian cuisine palatable to tourists. Food was barely decent. The hotel rooftop was very nice, on the other hand. We tried both.

A cultural but not a culinary delight. I came for dinner and was amazed by the pleasant and attentive staff, the old world interior design, the well-lit setting and the appropriate live music. Although the people I ate with were pleased, I was let down by the food. It was bland and tired; the seasoning lacked punch and the presentation was old fashioned. It’s good but it doesn’t match the prices or prestige of the place. This might have been an excellent eatery in the noughties but culinary-speaking, it hasn’t moved with the times.

We’ve eaten all over Tunis and enjoyed some lovely meals. Unfortunately this was not one of them. If you’re good with store bought spaghetti or white rice on every dish this is the place for you. Some traditional fare was mediocre at best however unimaginative dishes like Greek salad and dynamite shrimp were definitely to be skipped. Vegetables are not this restaurants strong suit. We were served frozen peas—they were hot but nevertheless not fresh. The chef walked around the room all night with his hands crossed behind his back hectoring diners. Unforgettable and unfortunate

This review is based on the Dar El Jeld traditional resturant: I Do not recommend. Food was nice, not overly amazing but quite pleasing to the pallete. However AND THIS IS WHERE THE REVIEW STARTS, absolutely horrendous service. The most dismissive waiters I have ever experienced. As far as fine dining goes this is the least fine experience. Our plates where removed mid food. Just swept in and took them, even though one person on our table literally had the bread and fork in hand. We were served water when first seated, but after that we weren't offered a drinks menu, and I had to call and call to finally be able to get a waiters attention ask for more water. We don't speak French and aren't visibly European (British tho!) So we were seated off to one side. And literally had to flag down wait staff the entire experience. First meal where I couldn't eat fast enough and ask for the bill. Upon requesting the bill a suited gentleman came with the bill and card reader for 3 people only mains the bill was only 210 TND so again not something which I was going to complain about (I spend more then this on takeaway). I spoke to him very nicely and asked if there was a problem with us, as we have been seated to the side and had such a dismissive service he just laughed and said no why, no no... I asked for the manager he said no, I said ok if I wanted to speak to the manager how could I do so and he responded the owner, shrugged his shoulders took the card machine and walked off.... If you have ever eaten a medicore meal in any other major city in the world then please hold onto that experience, and relish in the moment you were given a half hearted smile when you first walked in, beacuse here you can forget what basic customer service and manners are as you won't be getting any. My local chicken shop in London and cafeterias in Dubai feel like a more fine dining experience then here . All beacuse I don't speak French, and I'm brown (my basic Arabic was dismissed)... honestly feel like that was all held against me....

One of the worst experiences I’ve had in Tunis. The restaurant seems to only want to please European tourists. Not a very friendly atmosphere unless you’re French. Very sad to see our country still plagued by colonialism. However, can’t blame the servers as that’s their job, and they were friendly. This felt like a waste of time and money, and I left the restaurant with a bad taste in my mouth. Please do yourself a favor and stay away from this establishment, unless you’re French of course.

Second time here. First time was for lunch in a beautiful and bright room, this time it was for a private dinner. The wine and salads were excellent but the vegetarian options were slim. Probably a better experience as a meat eater.

Never have i been treated more awful in a restaurant, as we booked a dinner in this restaurant and did not inform us about the dress code, i was told that they will put on me a “Jebba” (tradition Tunisian robe) and when I asked about the miss communication of the dress code, it was just dismissed like rather you put it on or we don’t accept a men with a short pant. The dress code speech was complete rubbish, the clearly wanted to exercise the power in their head. Terrible and poor experience in this place.

(Translated by Google) The worst restaurant in our life. A trap for westerners where the quality of the food is poor and the service is very rushed. We tried the fish soup both here and in an unpretentious little restaurant on avenue de Bourghiba, and it was without doubt better in the second. Worst seafood salad ever tasted, pre-cooked and heated fish dishes. In Tunisia we ate in several restaurants and many stalls, each of them was far better than Dar El Jeld. Worst restaurant expirience of our life. Sea salad terrify, main course pre-coocked. In less than one hour we eat and get out. Worst place i've eated in tunisia. Worst restaurant expirience of our life. It is really hard to know where the restaurant is as their door is always closed.. and its not really visible at night.. too many tourists were waiting with us out and we didn’t recognize its door until the doorman opened the lock from the inside..

The worst hotel I have ever been in. My wife and I booked a shuttle service but when we were at the airport, nobody was waiting for us so we had to find a taxi to take us close to the “Hotel”. Access to the hotel with a car is impossible because of narrow alleys leading to it. So we had to walk struggling with our heavy suitcases. They judge people upon their nationality. Locals are not welcome. Waiters can ignore you or let you wait for long time till you feel fed up. The location of the hotel is not safe and it is far from supermarkets, transportation, or even clean restaurants. It was an awful and disappointing experience!

Went there as an American tourist for the rooftop dinner. Literally amazing view. The hotel staff were super accommodating and the food was pretty good. They do have elevated tourist prices but what do you expect. I stayed on the roof until after dark and was a bit hesitant about walking back through the Medina alone to a taxi. The front desk offered to walk me directly to a taxi which was so so kind of them. Couldn’t recommend more highly.

I booked today for a dinner in the rooftop. First, the welcoming is 0/10 ! No one at the reception to welcome people or direct them ! LITERALLY NO ONE ! Then the lady asked to stay at the lounge first for an Apero as our table is not ready ! We waited for 1h in the lounged with 45 min to receive a drink ! When asking the waiter for our drinks, his answer was we’r soo busy today ! We can do nothing ! Just wait ! ‘’ allah ghaleb’’ while being super impolite ! We moved to our dinning table. We ordered the food with a drink and the waiter forgot the drink mentioning that they serve the drink with the food ! Then coming back to inform us that the drink we ordered is ni longer available ! Miserable place ! Honestly they don’t deserve AT ALL their reputation ! To never and ever be back 👌🏻

My experience was truly exceptional! From the warm welcome and friendly staff to the wonderful ambiance, delightful music, and, of course, the FOOD – it was an all-around fantastic experience. However, I would like to provide some constructive feedback that I hope the manager will consider. During my visit with my German friends, they encountered some difficulties as the menu was available only in French, which made it challenging for them to make food choices. Consequently, they ended up ordering a side dish. It would greatly enhance the experience if the menu could be offered in multiple languages to cater to a diverse clientele. Additionally, it would be beneficial to clearly label the vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options on the menu. This would make it easier for guests with specific dietary preferences or restrictions to make informed choices. Despite these minor issues, the overall atmosphere of the restaurant was remarkable, especially being located in the Old Medina of Tunis. The live performance by the Kanoun player, who even played the German anthem for my friends, left them absolutely awestruck. It was a truly unique and unforgettable touch that added to our dining experience.

One of the best restaurants in Tunis with a view. In the Kasbah and Near market. Surrounded by government buildings and embassies. This is a very stylish and international location. The food is basically Michelin Star food. The hotel (dar) is draped in art and beauty. You will need a reservation for this place. No partying on this part of town. Restaurant closes around 10-11pm. Night life is near Sid bou said area after dinner.

One of most favourite meals not just of our trip but of my life. The hotel is beautiful and then the restaurant is spectacular. My partner had the Dorade which I wish I’d ordered. Wine is also wonderful. Tunisian wines are incredibly underrated.

Wonderful restaurant in the heart of the medina! Very elegant atmosphere, delicious food and wine, excellent service... and you pay high end European prices. Be sure to make a reservation in advance.

You can tell it is a touristic place, so don’t go if you’re looking for something really authentic, but the place is amazing, the service is very kind and the food is delicious. Portions are quite big (for me being Spanish), so we shared a couple of dishes. Very good experience overall.

Stayed here for a week. We had the junior suite and it was the most beautiful suite we’ve stayed in. The people are very nice and friendly. Most of the staff speak in broken English so communicating was quite hard, however the reception is fluent in English so that was great. Dar El Jeld made us feel very welcome, we were even given a tour around the Medina and they helped us find a SIM card for our phones :). To anyone reading this for recommendations, we really enjoyed having the tagliatelle and lemon tart. Thank you Dar El Jeld!

This is a gem in the heart of Tunis. The dinner, the spa and our suite was amazing. Perfect service, very tasty food and overall a superb experience. Special thanks to the staff and chef Walid, you made us feel extra welcome. Merci beaucoup, yatikoum el sahha 🙏🏽❤️ We will be back for sure!

One of the most wonderful hotels I have stayed in around the world. The staff were amazing offering the highest levels of service and genuine friendliness and assistance. The breakfast was excellent and very traditional. Their restaurant across the street was mouth watering decadence, with delicious wine. I stayed there with my Dad and Brother as we visited a family grave from WW2, where the hotel organised drivers and tours. The location is also prefect for visiting the old city and nearby historic sites. The hotel also without prompt organised a birthday surprise for my Dad.

Outstanding & Highly recommended. Went to Tunis on a family vacation. Every Tunisian I spoke to before the trip said that we have to stay here, so we did, and it did not disappoint. The location: in the heart of old Tunis. Stay here if you want to walk in the old Souqs and bazaars and explore heritage. The facilities are outstanding. Rooftop/ resto stands out. The inner courtyard is stunning. The building is a true masterpiece that is extremely well maintained. Rooms are big. This is a boutique hotel with less than 20 rooms. They don’t have standard rooms (but if you want a cheaper option, ask for their recently opened hotel called Dar Dorra). Every room in Dar Jeld is a suite. The hospitality was amazing. The Dar Jeld team went above and beyond for us and they made us feel at home. Things to consider: The hotel is not easily accessible by car (due to location in old city) and it’s on a steep road, so senior citizens should be careful.

The food was very good and authentic albeit quite overpriced, all of the staff was very attentive and welcoming, except for one waiter who was making us feel quite unwelcome: I’d wager that my family and I weren’t exactly the clientele many touristy establishments in Tunisia seek, i.e. white Europeans or white passing overdressed Tunisians. That being said, a positive experience on the whole

If you want a hammam that is relaxing, I would not recommend here. They rush you through like an enterprise without much of an explanation, nor would you feel very relaxed. This is very much unlikely my experience in Moroccan or Turkish hammams.

The food was great my only negative is me needing ac I know most living there don't but it was pretty warm.

We stayed in Dar el jeld from the 23rd July till 27th july for 4 nights and then we came back for another 2 nights at the end of our trip because our hotel in Hammamet was a very nig disappointment and Emily was very helpful in sorting us out with rooms even though we didnt have anything booked and they were fully booked she still managed to get us 2 rooms it was just amazing. (We were the family of sisters with 2 kids) The hotel and staff are incredible and so accommodating they go out of there way to make your stay comfortable nothing is to much for them I would like to make a special mention for Emily and Refka at reception abdul khalid and labib and yusuf in security and a very big thank you to Arslan the driver he is such an amazing person he went out of his way to make sure we was happy with everything nothing was to much trouble for him( he was our saviour and hero saving us from the Hammamet hotel )...thank you all you made our stay very memorable and we hope to see you all again in the future.

Food was delicious but waiters were not competent. I asked for a dish and got a wrong one and I asked for lemon and it never came Very expensive too

Fantastic food, nice ambience and really good service. Solid 5/5. The only (very minor) critique I could think of is that the waiter mixed up our sparkling and still water bottles at the end. Everything else was perfect.

The food was delicious, the service was really nice and the atmosphere is wonderful (we were on the rooftop). A little bit expensive though, but definitely to try at least once.

Very high quality hotel. Inside the Medina “old city” part of Tunis. It looks like not much from the street, just a few yellow doors, but inside it is extremely luxurious and well worth the reasonable price. The restaurant is often quoted as the best in the city, and we had a birthday dinner for 12 here which was easy, delicious and beautiful. Chef Marco comes out to speak to most guests and is quite kind. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. We visited the Four Seasons Tunis for one night and far prefer the Dar el Jeld.

Location is in heart of old Town near the court house. Hotel is beautifully designed and drips with history. Chef Mosmoudi at the rooftop restaurant is an absolutle gem and insanely talented. The view is by far the best view of Tunis by a long shot. We had his award winning octopus sizzle which as I write this review I'm yearning for. The staff was amazing and continually exceeded our expectations. The spa was fabulous and extremely relaxing. The scrub was magically and I was glowing for 24 hours. A must stay of you are in Tunis! We will be back certainly.

Unbelievabe experience of true tunisian cuisine. Wonderful atmosphere and delicious food. The hotel is fabulous and very tasteful, like another world. Highly recommend a visit to the Dar El Jeld.

The place is very exclusive, food is pricey. You can enjoy modern tunisian cuisine.

  • 5/5 Linda B. 1 year ago on Google
Expensive but great spa. We went there twice and felt like in heaven afterwards. The first time the rooftop restaurant was perfect to grab a drink and something to eat afterwards. The second time the music was way too loud and also bad which destroyed the experience a bit. The food was good though, we had the charcuterie board and fish with citrus sauce.

This is a truly wonderful hotel. My congratulations to everyone involved in it. I am staying here with 3 other travellers who have been all around the world in many fantastic hotels. We all think that this one it’s just wonderful. Well done to your management, all your staff.

It’s always a pleasure to go back again and again to this typical restaurant. Typical Tunisian food with high quality service

  • 3/5 Ali B. 11 months ago on Google
It’s a nice hotel but it’s not as fancy as you may think. One of the receptionists was very mean and another old lady responsible for the breakfast room was kinda racist as well.

I have been in Tunisia for one week now and have not been at all impressed with the food, except this restaurant! It was incredible food, great variety, very tasty, not bland like much of the other food that I have encountered here in country. And the atmosphere, service, and decor is incredible. There was a man playing a musical instrument downstairs, even let me play it a little bit. Be sure to look at some of the little side rooms and take photos, as they are exquisite. Very impressed!

We were only in the restaurant. What an amazing experience. Beautiful restaurant. Very friendly staff. Excellent (and a lot of) good. It's also great to host larger groups for 10+ people if needed.

I have not stayed there as a guest but I was brought by my friends there and the food was delicious. Alongside with superb history of the building, architecture and design. Overwhelmingly pleasant aesthetics everywhere and worth a visit!

We went for dinner there. The hotel seemed wonderful. Spacious and clean common spaces. We had dinner on the rooftop which serves European style food (traditional restaurant was full). We had fish and desserts. Service was ok - the place is worth a dinner and the view is really beautiful!

  • 4/5 Neil Van D. 6 months ago on Google
We dined on the rooftop. The atmosphere and service were both wonderful, but the food was very disappointing. Two of us really couldn’t eat our meal. Suggested to go for drinks and the view but don’t dine there. Most expensive and worst food we experienced in Tunisia.

Overpriced luxury stay. Ideal for couples/business travelers who appreciate large rooms + elevator + paying for the “best”. Poor for pragmatism-focused tourists who like uniqueness/value — premium price is mostly for being at luxury place + high room square footage. Out of four places we stayed (four touristy nights), poorest value/utility of trip. - Low-resource (no travel guides like later hotels we stayed at did) - Stressful and low-utility navigational aids. Hard to get to. Several minute walk to nearest Bolt/taxi pickup point. - Airport shuttle is 20 euro vs 10-15 euro nearby hotels. hammam + spa + dinner are significantly pricier than peers. - Breakfast buffet is decent but not included (Sousse all-inclusive resort at half the price has better breakfast buffet) - Rooms hard to get in. Very frustrating twist-left/pull-up to unlock door. No hair dryer that I could find. We later stayed at Jaz Tour Khalef (Sousse) and nearby hotels called Dar Ben Kacem and Dar El Medina — and the latter three have smaller rooms but much higher-value experiences (comparable quality amenities with less pretentiousness). Eg Dar El Medina at 29% the price also has free fruit plate, courtyard, fast wifi, etc — while having air dryer, free lemon drink, free breakfast, etc.

It's such a shame, lovely place nice, clean, and tidy, but the spa services is just a joke..the masseuse doesn't have a clue what massage means. It was way too expensive for such an appalling service. Don't waste your money here.
