The nearest railway station is Muthalamada on Palakkad-Pollachi section of Southern Railways, which is 10km. from Meenkara headworks. The nearest airport is Coimbatore, which is 80 Km. from Meenkara headworks. The project consists of a)An earthen dam across Meenkara river, a tributary of Bharathapuzha b)A net work of canals consisting of two main canals, to irrigate an area of 3035 ha. The dam consists mainly of an earthen dam 934m. long with a masonry spillway 30m. long. Maximum height of the dam is 18.9m. Gross storage of the reservoir is 11.33 Mm3. The spillway has two vertical lift type shutters, and has a capacity of 472.6 cumecs. The sluice for taking out water for irrigation, is located in the earth dam. Meenkara Dam is an embankment or earthen dam built on the banks of the river Gayatripuzha,a tributary of the river Bharathapuzha, at Muthalamada in the Muthalamada Grama Panchayat near Kollengode in the Palakkad district of Kerala with masonry spillway sections. It is part of the Gayatri Irrigation Project. The project was started in 1956 and partially commissioned in 1960. The project was fully completed in 1964. The irrigation scheme has been prepared for agriculture and drinking water in Palakkad district. Farms in Chittoor, Nemmara, Alathur in Palakkad district and Vadakkancherry in Thrissur district will benefit from this irrigation scheme. Palakkad Meenkara is a picnic spot located near Meenkara dam in Palakkad district. Built across the river Gayathri which flows into the Bharathapuzha, the Meenkara dam was constructed in 1964.

Its a good place to visit i prefer at the time of sunset orelse you might feel dizzy due to the direct hit of the sun.At night it has a wonderful view but i prefer to walk in a group as i have spotted some drunkards on the way. Also there are few spots near dam which has a wonderful view of sunset especially the one i have shown on the photo.Also carry a water bottle because there are no shops nearby.

A beautiful scenic calm and quiet place to spend your evenings with your loved ones. Great place for photoshoot Ideal to chill with friends & family Carry water and snacks if you are looking to spend sometime here, as you don't get anything in the vicinity. There is quite a lot to walk and climb, so be prepared.
