The Darajani Market, a vibrant and bustling marketplace, holds a central position within the enchanting labyrinthine streets of Stone Town, Zanzibar. This historic market is not only a hub of commerce but also a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the region. It boasts several monikers that reflect its significance in both local history and daily life. Known formally as the Darajani Market, it also carries the name Estella Market in honor of Countess Estella, the sister of Lloyd Mathews, who was once the esteemed Prime Minister of Zanzibar. In the Swahili tongue, it's affectionately referred to as "Marikiti Kuu," which translates to the "main market," a fitting title for this vibrant place of trade and community. Situated along Darajani Road, this bustling market finds itself nestled in the shadows of the majestic Anglican Cathedral of Christ. Its roots trace back to 1904 when Bomanjee Maneckjee erected its primary edifice on behalf of Sultan Ali bin Hamud. Over the years, it underwent expansions and renovations, evolving into the sprawling marketplace we know today. The heart of Darajani beats to the rhythm of commerce, primarily specializing in the vibrant and aromatic world of food. Seafood, meats, fruits, grains, and a kaleidoscope of spices form the culinary soul of this marketplace. Yet, Darajani's offerings are not limited to just gastronomic delights; it is a treasure trove of diverse merchandise. Wander its labyrinthine alleys, and you'll discover an array of shops peddling everything from cutting-edge consumer electronics to traditional clothing, providing a glimpse into the kaleidoscope of Zanzibari life. Whether you're seeking a taste of the exotic, hunting for souvenirs, or simply immersing yourself in the vibrant energy of local culture, the Darajani Market promises an unforgettable experience at every turn.

It’s a market where you can find all kinds of local spices, fruits, vegetables. Of course, it’s very chaotic. But that’s the charm of the place. It’s chaotic and yet organized in a sense that everything runs so smoothly.

Great place to see the local life. Remember to check the price when purchasing, price can be very different from one stall to another, and don’t be shy to bargain.

I guess that without any local guide, it's pretty much impossible for tourists to go there & not feel hunted and be able to even buy anything. We tried, and there were not even 5 seconds without anyone following us. I understand their approach, however it really deters most people from really going to see their wares and shops. However if you wanna really feel the atmosphere & local life, here you go.

Real local market, recommend You can buy whatever you want here, fruits, vegetables, drink The local dates are nice, although a little sweet, but hope you can try, 6000 shillings per kilo, in Swahili dates is called TENDE, recommend, is good for health and good to eat, local people just use a newspaper to wrap it.

Great spot for shopping groceries, household items, Zanzibari delicacies and accessories. It’s pretty pretty crowded would advise to travel light - leave the expensive gadgets at home. It’s pretty HOT & almost no circulation of wind, wear a pair of shorts to be comfy.

No trip to Stone Town is incomplete without a visit to Darajani Market, this where the locals go shopping for their day to day groceries, spices, fruits, meat & poultry as well as fresh fish from the ocean.

You have to go with a tour guide. The meat and fish part is not for the light stomachs, the smell alone is hard to withstand. You have to be ready to negotiate and walk away if you are not happy.

Great place with colors all around but the people want to sell you everything. And they stop you every step you make. Every time the same questions and if you don’t stop to talk to them they scream very loud saying that you don’t want to talk because of their skin colors. Thats ridiculous. We just wanted to be free and walking around but it’s impossible.

A nice experience to buy local spices and dates and vegetables. Wholesale rate and bargain is necessary as the prices are not taglines. Must be aware of your stuffs and if you buy multiple items you can bargain and purchase..

Through long time reovating, darajani market become new and clean bazzar. It just opened with zanzibar president Mr.Mwinyi. Unfortunately due to just opened, there is no shop opened, but I’m sure here will be filled with full people. Welcome and have a look before crowded.

This is basically the only local market I found, the prices for goods are reasonable but sometimes you need to negotiate with the price since they tend to raise the price for foreigners.

Interesting place to go but bargain on everything and bargain a lot. There are very big margins to bargain. Also check with different vendors as the prices can differ quite a bit.
