Built in 1440 and still standing tall. Incredible!! Great place to learn about KANO’s rich cultural heritage and history. No entry fee required but you may have to tip the tour guide afterwards. It’s not a very big place so shouldn’t time to go round.

Interested in learning about the history and culture of the old Kano, her people, here’s where to find the detailed history including artifacts to back the history. You’ll find some of what’s left of the old kingdom before the British Invasion and some of the new generation historical items. The historians and tour guides here makes the visit more enjoyable so be sure to engage them for a full tour. Tickets are sold for #200 but you’ll need to pay the tour guide separately. If you find anyone offering to give you the tour, ask for your ticket to pay for the tour, if they can’t offer you tickets, be sure to walk away from such scammers.

Guidance Makama was a delightful visit. It was filled with a lot of history and information. It sheds light to a expanded understanding to the principles around the emirate in Kano, kano before Islam and kano today. However, like most tourist site alot of the enjoyment really comes from the museum guide.

Great place of historical significance. An dcemplary display of Kano's rich history and pageantry, well preserved for the coming generation. Beyond Kano, a well curated record of British domination of Northern Nigeria with very interesting records of British atrocities like stolen doors and other escapedes. More of these important histories of Nigeria should not only be behind doors but should be taught in schools to deepen national integration. Access is free, but charging some tokens is not a bad idea. The support and presence of corporate sponsors is quite evident, but without government support, the facilities will suffer a steep decay. This is a heritage centre that must be preserved for the coming generation. It is a great place to add to your bucket list when visiting Kano.

Neat Environment, but lacks artifact to be exactly described as a museum. looks more like a picture/cultural exhibition center. The Nigerian Government should try stocking it up with rare and precious Nigeria artifact and historical objects.

Also called the Kano museum, Gidan Makama museum used to be home to the Emirs of Kano. It was established in 1953 and contains materials which date go way back in time. Some of the artifacts in this museum existed before the arrival of Islam in Kano state, and depict the traditions of the people of Kano state.

Filled with historical heritage of KANO state and its environs.Located in Kano State, Gidan Dan Hausa played an important role in the modernisation of northern Nigeria, but only a few know the history behind this beautiful building. Michael Oche reports from Kano. Gidan Dan Hausa is said to be more than 250 years old, and was originally owned by a local chief responsible for managing the Emir’s farmland. The name Gidan Dan Hausa literally means ‘The Son of Hausa residence” in Hausa, it became the birth place of western education in northern Nigeria.

located just a few minutes from the Emirs palace, it's an excellent place for those who love history and culture. It Is rich in information and colourful traditional material and artifacts. Price to go in is N500 which comes down give or take a $1.The tour can take up to 2 hours, but it's well worth it.

One of the Monuments from Ancient Nigeria. Built in approximately 1440AD. Firstly named GIDAN Rumfa after the builder who then gave it to the Makama Kano, hence the name. The tour guide was super welcoming and took his time. There was a bit of communication barrier due to his rapid speech, and limited(though Good) English. It is located very close to the New Emir's Palace, The Prisons and in the heart of town. It contains good history of the ancient town, it could be modernised with the additions of video reels. A good site for any history buff to visit

This place has all the trappings of a great Museum: the art, the history and the historian which all comes as a package deal in a historical building. Every space we explored was awe-inspiring and the facts were plain to see in their original state, pictures, artifacts and other depictions. I was impressed, as was everyone else in my tour group.

My visit to this museum was insightful, I love how the structure of the museum and everything hasn’t been overly modified, if they tell you this was the structure 600 years ago best believe it was it is. The guides are good at their job, rich in history and execution. It would have been a better experience if they had proper lightning as the staff had to use their flashlights to illuminate artifacts. Great experience.

This is one of the best historic sites to visit in Kano, Nigeria. I visited for the first time with my lovely wife💕. The Museum is about 500 years old according to information gotten from the museum historian and other artifacts in the museum. You'll learn a lot about the rich historic culture of Kano....and there's a little shop inside the museum where you can buy leather works. I saw bags and belts made of crocodile skin and they were so fascinating. I haven't seen that before and I really loved how they looked! The historian is very lively and pays attention to details. It's a nice place to visit.

The more than 500-year-old museum building is a former Emir palace in traditional loam construction and is therefore an exhibit on the classic Hausa Architecture by itself. You should definitely go on a guided tour. The museum consists of eleven galleries and gives an impressive insight into the history of the city, but also in tradition, industry and music. Very interesting is the exhibition on the Islamic heritage of the Kanawa, as the inhabitants of Kano are called. In my opinion the must-see when in Kano, I was really impressed.

A brief history of Gidan Makama Museum Kano State, Nigeria. This building served as temporary palace of Kano before the current palace. Gidan Rumfa was constructed in the 15th century, The museum has a significant collections of arts, crafts and items of historic interest related to the Kano area. Located in a 15th-century historical building, which is recognised as a National Monument by the Government of Nigeria. The museum is divided into eleven galleries, each with their own centre of focus. Galleries include the Zaure or the main entrance hall with displays of traditional materials, city walls and maps of Kano, the history of statehood, Kano in the 19th century, the Civil War, economy, industry and music. An open space inside the museum acts as a performance stage for a Koroso dance and drama group. The house was originally built in the 15th century for Muhammad Rumfa then the young grandchild of the monarch who had just been appointed Makama Kano, a traditional title in Kano. Rumfa later became King of Kano and then moved to a new palace but subsequent Makamas lived in the building. After the British capture of Kano in 1903, the place briefly served as an office for the colonial officers in Kano. The structure was later divided into three parts. One section became a museum ran by the Department of Antiquities, another became a primary school and a third maintained the original intention as a residential building. Gidan Makama is now part of museums under management of the National Commission of Museums and Monuments and one of the old structures visualise traditional Hausa architecture. The structure originally contained mud walls typical of the period but in later years some modern renovation work has taken place. Like i said earlier the museum has 11 galleries each containing materials, artifacts and pictures representing the historical heritage of the people. 1st gallery is about Hausa traditional architecture and includes building materials used by the people of Kano. 2nd gallery has the Kofar kabuga gates through which the British entered and subsequently captured Kano; it also has a map showing the walls of Kano 3rd gallery exhibits a traditional religious history of Kano in pictures and the story of the early invaders of Kano led by Bagauda 4th depicts the Fulani influenced history of Kano starting from the 19th century 5th gallery tells the story of Kano Civil war 6th gallery tells the story of old Kano economy and Durbar 7th gallery has the colonial period and pictorial history of 20th century political figures 8th includes the Islamic heritage of the people of Kano 9th shows various occupations of the people of Kano and includes farm instruments, basketwork and textiles 10th has music instruments 11th depicts the traditional Hausa bride's room. Hope these would be useful to students who are interested in studying history But im a Geographer.

More publicity required for this historical landmark with well preserved artefacts. Tour guide was professional and helpful. No ticket office or ticket required however, someone comes to ask for fares/donation as the internal revenue officer. There is no signpost or designation stating this. Tourists should not feel intimidated by this. You should still have a nice time and educating stories abound here. It would be better though if this aspect is either clearer, cleared up or stopped.Look forward to coming back here as I feel a second visit may reinforce whatever I missed initially. Estimated tour duration is 1 hour. Power supply is an issue in Nigeria anyway so the visit nearly got marred as there was no light and the museum is dark with little or no natural light(the original Palace design) a flashlight was handy and flashlights from camera made the experience unmarred. The grounds are hired for functions and events too as evident when I visited.

Good place with wonderful history. The historian is well knowledgeable about the nitty-gritty of the area and answered questions without any doubt as to kano, its past rulers, the colonial masters, reasons as to the 3 deposed rulers in its history.

Quite a rich heritage of the kanawas(kano). For every historical figures/ items that was showcased in the meusume, were real artifacts donated by those who created the history by themselves as evidence of cultural/historical sustainability for our future generations. Indeed it was a hard work they toiled. *****The colonists were sinister. They still catered away some of the historical items just like they did win kingdom of Benin**** even the indirect rule they promoted was already in place before there arrival as a direct governoring system in the north. I so much dispisced the interference of the so called colonialists. Finally the history teacher/lecturer/ tourer Mallam Ahmad was just the right person for the job, full of sincere smile, patience, courage and above all intelligent and versatile. Although he was on clutches but his disability was his biggest strength that promotes his abilities. Jazakallahum khairan to Mallam Ahmad at Gidan Makama Meusume, Emir road, Kano, Nigeria.
