From Broad Street or Marina Road, this Anglican Church cannot be missed. For it's sake, you would want to attend church service or feel like going inside to take a look. I haven't gone inside yet, but I have passed it a thousand times. Recently, I decided I was going to say something about it. With decades of existence and a design that is second to none in Nigerian church architecture, it is indeed a sight to see. It's probably the most prominent or popular feature on CMS bus stop after CSS Bookshop.

Cathedral Church of Christ is an heritage Anglican church located in Marina, Lagos. It’s an iconic old church with masterpiece architectural designs. The church building itself is surrounded by various business houses, including those owned by the church itself. It’s fully air conditioned with single wooden seats for parishioners, making for a comfortable worship. There’s however, the challenge of adequate parking spaces as the ones provided aren’t enough for parishioners during big events.

This is one of the most beautiful churches I have been to. It also has the biggest pipe organ I have seen. The environment it truly serene and very conducive for prayer and worship. The church workers are attentive and discreet in their approach too. The church seems to pay a lot of attention to music, and my experience was really nice.

This cathedral is one of class. Ancient with a mysterious awe of solemn worship. I am not sure of the age of the building itself, but it's over 100yrs. The building is beautifully maintained... Constant painting, beautiful lights/lightings. The church boast of a spacious parking 🅿️ lot but sometimes, there are still parking outside on the road. I attended a community hymn singing service, and the solemnity of service, the lightings, the organ & the ambience of the gothic architecture styles which gives attention to the sound of within the church makes my experience a surreal one!

I was briefly part of the service here today and I must say that i was quite impressed. The auditorium looked really beautiful with golden litted chandeliers hanging from the high ceilings. The service was so organized, the hymns were really solemn. I couldn't help but join as i heard the barry tones from the men, the tenor and soprano all coming from different corners. The melody sounded really cool that it got me imagining the sort of melody the angels and the 24 elders must be producing as they worship God in heaven on a daily basis. The prayers were really so calm and it got me asking which God do "the churches that shout and get agitated when praying to the almighty God" pray to. If the ancient churches have maintained this culture of prayer over several years, it must be because God is surely answering their prayers. The men were dressed in black jackets over grey pants. Am not sure if this routine or perhaps it's a special occasion today. You could see old & grey haired men and the middle aged men serving God with zeal.

I was opportuned to attend a service in this church. The architectural design is worth the hype and feature in movies. Most importantly, I loved the service there. The choristers, the sermon...everything was in tune. People were also friendly and welcoming.

I always feel at home when I come here. This architectural wonder always takes my breath away, from the many turrets seen on the exterior, to the high columns and magnificent stuccoed interior. This should be a tourist destination for visitors to Lagos. Did you know that Bishop Ajayi Crowther is interred there? 🙂

An amazing church with an intriguing Neo-Gothic building that was designed by Joshua Be (a) gandoj (g) i Benjamin, son of Joshua Blackall Benjamin, Proprietor of the Lagos Observer newspaper and a historic family from Olowogbowo. J. B. Benjamin was Saro by ancestry and was a civil engineer who was chosen by the church building committee to design the magnificent edifice that’s standing till date. The foundation stone laying ceremony was performed by the Prince of Wales, in April of 1925 and the structure was completed about 1946/1947. The floor of the Lady Chapel was designed by Herbert Macaulay, C. E. of Kirsten Hall, Balbina Street alias Wizard of Kirsten Hall. Historically, the church was affiliated with the Church Missionary Society which later changed into the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion as we have it today. Historic events like General Yakubu & Victoria Gowon’s wedding ceremony, Remembrance Day Ceremony before it was changed to January 15, ordinations &c have occurred throughout time in this magnificent edifice.

The rendition of the Alleluia chorus is fantastic with the pipe organ adding class to the music. The church looks like what a church should be in architectural designs unlike the warehouse churches of today. Visit to enjoy those soul lifting hymns of yesteryear.

As a photographer with an avid interest in capturing architectural marvels that blend history, spirituality, and aesthetic grandeur, my visit to the Cathedral Church of Christ in Marina, Lagos Island, was a captivating and enriching experience. The Anglican church, standing majestically amidst the bustling heart of Lagos, exemplifies an extraordinary fusion of Gothic Revival architecture and the deep-rooted Christian heritage of the region. The first striking aspect upon approaching the Cathedral is its awe-inspiring scale and meticulous architectural detailing. The towering spires, reminiscent of Gothic cathedrals, pierce the sky, exuding a sense of reverence and spiritual elevation. The intricate carvings adorning the façade, showcasing biblical scenes and religious motifs, offer a visual feast for both the devout and the art enthusiast. Stepping into the interior of the Cathedral, I was immediately taken by the play of light and shadow that danced across the intricately designed stained glass windows. These windows, reminiscent of medieval European cathedrals, depicted religious narratives with vivid, vibrant hues, creating a surreal ambiance within the sacred space. The interplay of natural light with the stained glass added an ethereal quality to my photographic endeavors, allowing for captivating compositions. Further exploration within the Cathedral revealed the painstaking craftsmanship that went into creating the altars, adorned with ornate woodwork and intricate designs. The sheer scale and detailing of these altars, alongside the impressive nave and choir, provided a myriad of compositional opportunities for my lens. The interplay of light through the towering arches and the mesmerizing symphony of architectural lines truly captivated my artistic sensibilities. Beyond the aesthetic aspects, the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, serves as a vibrant hub of religious and community activities. The warm welcome from the church staff and the devout worshippers added a human element to my experience, enhancing my perception of this sacred space.
