One of the top destination in Greenwich, The National Maritime Museum is the largest museum of its kind in the world to learn about maritime history. It is very friendly for kids, many engagement activities here for family and children. Don't forget to take a photo of the Ship in a Bottle in front of the museum, discover tales of polar exploration, and learn more about the indigenous communities that live in the Arctic and Antarctic, find your favourite figurehead which are carved wooden sculptures that traditionally sat on the prows of sailing ships, learn about the British hero Nelson and his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar 1805.

I've always read the stories of early explorers. From Vikings to pirates and Titanic to discovering America/Australia and some tiny islands that still nobody knows about. They all happened with the help of a humble wooden ship. And this museum is the best place for putting that mental image and the real life knowledge together. The whole area Docklands is where ships used to bring in goods for London so the museum's location is just perfect. Its in a same area as a naval college and Cutty Sark so plenty of marine related activities here. Personally I cant swim, never been on a voyage because I'm kinda afraid of water so I have great respect for the people who ventured out on the sea to explore the unknown. Especially the Arctic expeditions that combine my two worst fears, cold and water. Can't recommend this museum enough.

I am a bit disappointed with the historical exhibition which is modest. It is definitely a good place for families, there are many multimedia solutions. In the afternoon (Good Friday) it was very loud and chaotic. The museum is free so there is nothing to be picky about but I was expecting something more.

A very kid friendly, tactile display taking you through a fairly eclectic mix of maritime history. We were only having a quick look around (it's free) but sure you could spend half a day there going into more detail if you wish. The grounds it's set in are also stunning and the view up the hill to the observatory (a paid experience itself) back onto London are stunning.

Great museum about the naval history of England. You will find information and real objects used over the centuries. There are interactive areas for children. Free entrance. No need to book in advance. There is a wide range of pieces in the museum that will become interesting to everybody.

One object was the ambition for my visit: the navy blue Uniform Coat that Rear Admiral Nelson wore at Trafalgar. The discreet black hole over the left collar bone where the fatal musket ball took his life at the moment of triumph. Around this modestly sized garment are all the familiar memorable paintings of the great man and objects from his life. Compellingly and beautifully laid out gallery within a world class museum

ENTRANCE IS FREE!!! One of the best museums I've ever seen. The building by its own is a masterpiece but inside is more interesting. If you like maritime things you're going to love it. You can find and see(explore) everything that happened from the very beginning of maritime from sailing till the now years of engines. And a fun fact... in the college next to the museum is a scene on THOR: The Dark World

Great museum to spend some educational and entertaining time with children. There is an interesting playground just beside the museum where you go outside through museum shop and cafe. There are nice long enough slides for even bigger kids to have fun. It's pity that kids play area on the ground floor gets booked quickly during holiday terms and weekends. And it costs £3 for 45 minutes which is free during weekdays and not holiday time. There are toilets, lifts and cafés. I love the fact that there is a praying room for those who have daily prayers can perform whilst enjoying the time in the museum for the whole day.

There is a good variety of displays for a nice age span. I wish things were labeled with some more placards or navigation more touch pads. There is a good use of technology, but if someone is using the touchpad to figure out what they're looking at you're stuck not knowing anything until you can get to it.

National Maritime Museum located in Park Row, Greenwich, it’s an excellent museum of British naval history with entrance free. It’s great museum with impressive exhibitions, with some interactive activities for kids as well and wheelchair access is very good. Large open spaces, restaurant and toilets available and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful, we were there for +3hours. Highly recommend because it’s a great place for tourists and not only to visit.

Top museum, free admission is always impressive and the Maritime museum delivers an abundance of delights. First of all the children's play areas are great, educational soft play that will keep kiddos of all ages occupied. For 'Ahoy' you need to book a time slot in advance but this is well worth doing. The museum blends the traditional with the innovative, with augmented reality attractions such as the giant map mixed in with more conventional exhibits. Cafes are good and the staff are very helpful and charming. Top stuff all round.

It is a very big and interesting museum, we didn’t have enough time to see the whole exhibition but enjoyed it very much. I bought a book on the collection from the gift store for a very reasonable price. The building it self and the parks surrounding are very beautiful. People of all ages would enjoy this museum.

Not too crowded even in Saturday afternoon, a lot of knowledge about maritime history provided. After visiting the museum, all families can have a picnic outside in the Greenwich park. It is an amazing experience to have on weekend

Greenwich is just beautiful. Only 15-20 minute train journey from central London. Museum is free ( you can donate). You can easily spend a few hours there. So much to see (Pacific section, Polar section, etc.). My favourite place in London.

A great place for people with an interest in boats and naval architecture. It's a free museum set up in wonderful gardens of the queen's house and Greenwich line. It pays tribute to London's leading place in maritime history. The Pacific, Atlantic and trade sections have great presentations on the geopolitics of the early maritime trade. Did not feel crowded at all. Nice restrooms and a cafe on the first floor.

Very kids friendly. The big map there is a cool place for kids to run around. The National Maritime Museum is a maritime museum in Greenwich, London. It is part of Royal Museums Greenwich, a network of museums in the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. The museum was officially established in 1934 within the 200 acres (0.81 km2) of Greenwich Royal Park in the buildings formerly occupied by the Royal Hospital School, before it moved to Holbrook in Suffolk.

National Maritime Museum is a captivating tribute to Britain's maritime legacy and its far-reaching influence on the world. It goes beyond the history of ships, offering a comprehensive exploration of the places that were once integral to the British Empire. This museum is a treasure trove of knowledge, where history enthusiasts and families with curious little ones alike can discover something fascinating. I was enthralled during my visit, spending hours delving into the exhibits, and I'm already looking forward to returning. It's a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to unravel the epic maritime history that shaped our world

Such an amazing museum. I've been here quite a few times, but this time it was a few years since my last visit. They continue to update the museum. Very good for learning about difficult cultures and history, including slave trade. Very big lots to see. Free! And so much in the area to do. Highly recommended.

Great activities for kids! We went for my daughter’s 3rd birthday to the museum and kids Ahoy session it cost £3 for all four of us to attend Ahoy and the museum was included in the price. There is a pram area, changing facilities and a cafe, there are about 3 kids friendly areas/galleries with activities such as colouring, fancy dress, play ships, play shopping to name a few. Parking is £10 for the entire day! Which is great if you wish to venture out to other areas, you do not need to buy a ticket to the museum to park here.We enjoyed the day out and would visit again.

A museum that's become a staple of the famous stable of museums in London, National Maritime Museum details Britain's seafaring past, from the many historical naval excursions to the heroic exploits of Lord Horatio Nelson, to the dark chapters of its role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The museum caters to the curiosity of both adults and children alike - with plenty of areas designed with the little ones in mind and café areas for refreshment and a breather. I have always been fascinated by the sea and though there are many shades to Britain's past when it comes to its role at sea, the museum opens a fascinating window into a world that shaped this island since its seafaring heydays.

(Translated by Google) It is one of the best museums I have visited, all the history that is collected in this room is impressive. As for the organization of the different rooms is perfect, during the tour you will have a journey through time where step by step you will appreciate in detail all the Naval history of this Great Country, there are also references to the most relevant historical events of the shipping history of other countries. It is definitely impressive everything you can appreciate and know about this topic. As for the facilities, everything is very well designed for the tours, I like the area for children where they can interact with various interactive elements, pleasant area for meals. I want to personally highlight the impressive stained glass windows, they really are beautiful works of art, impressive. I totally recommend it, especially for lovers of navigation and history. It only remains to say ... Thank you! It was an unforgettable experience. (Original) Es uno de los mejores museos que he visitado, es impresionante toda la historia que se recopila en este recinto. Amazing museum, for free, surrounded by charming gardens and managed by smart (an also charming) staff. We arrived 30 minutes before closing time and we were still allowed in. They have different sections for the different seas and oceans plus specific thematic expositions. These days we could enjoy it without crowds. Congratulations to all British sea people.

A little off shoot from the main maritime museum that is much more adult based. Again free entry but you are encouraged to make a donation after walking freely around the floors. Each exhibit has information and there's info dotted around about the history of the house. I think you need to allow 30-60 for a visit

We visited on 16/01/22. It is free entry and we were told they had 2 new exhibitions to view. There is really quite alot to see here over different levels/floors. They also had young astronomer of the year exhibition, this was at a extra cost of £10 p/adult. There is 2 cafés with a choice of hot/cold drinks/food. Lots of interesting artifacts & information. I personally loved all the figureheads and the baltic glass ( stained glass ) exhibit along with the ship simulator ( a big kid at heart!)

Absolutely brilliant museum! Lots to see and do, along with some interactive displays (great for adults and kids alike!). The museum is free to all. There are also usually one or two special exhibitions which you can pay for separately. I'd set a few hours aside to see the whole museum; we were there for a few hours and didn't manage to get around all the galleries. There is a nicely situated café on the ground floor alongside a well stocked museum gift shop! I will definitely be returning to Greenwich for this museum!

Absolutely amazing place, in the heart of Greenwich, for a fan of sea and history. I visited on my own, but I can say it is definitely a place for the whole family,as there's plenty of fun stuff for younger and older kids. Took me 3 hours to go through every floor and I'm definitely going back for more. Every display worth a while, so much to enjoy and to learn. Café and a restaurant offers nice selection of food and drink. Plenty of toilets on each floor, so no worries in that department. Couldn't recommend more!

The info on Lord Nelson was interesting, there wasn't much on Wellington. Shackleton I also think should have had a bigger section devoted. I was looking for info on John Harrison regarding his maritime watches and how Greenwich became the centre of World time, but disappointingly there wasn't much. Free to enter so worthwhile for all to come and learn about how important the British Navy was at maintaining the Empire.

Free entrance and a no need for booking. Great place to spend hours with the family. There were plenty of interactive activities for the kids around the museum. Full of historic artifacts. The world map area on the 1st floor was also interesting with the Posideon giving out the Interesting facts about the places. The ship-steering stimulator was also great. The only thing that was a little disappointed was the roof top cafe had nothing to eat for lunch just coffee muffins and icecream. Other than that, it was a lovely place and the view of the Greenwich park was amazing.

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich stands out as a remarkable destination, providing an extraordinary exploration of our relationship with the world's seas. As an integral part of the Royal Museums Greenwich, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it appeals to a wide range of visitors, from those deeply interested in naval history to casual guests. The museum showcases a variety of engaging exhibits. I was especially captivated by the Sea of Things Gallery, the fascinating array of ship figureheads, and the stunning craftsmanship of Prince Fredericks's barge. This is a free museum which is an added bonus! Additionally, the museum boasts an excellent gift shop and two cafes, making it a perfect place for spending a relaxing day.

Paid a visit to the National Maritime Museum today. My objective was to study the expeditions of Captain James Cook and lives of Native Mauri's and Aborigine's in New Zealand and Australia. 5 hours of delightful exposure to historical information. The museum was booked out when we got there. They were only accepting visitors with pre-booked entry. The social distancing practices put in place were stringent but without restriction. I felt very safe. There are multiple hand sanitiser stations on each floor and a one way system helps you to navigate your way through the Museum safely. We were fortunate once again to encounter a member of staff knowledgeable in all areas that was happy to assist us to gain a deeper understanding of featured events in history. The staff were calm, helpful, friendly and professional. We will be visiting again next week 😊

Great looking museum. Track and traces impressive 👏 best i have used. Talked to 4 members of staff who are very friendly but not one made any attempt to explain that most of the museum is not open you basically walk through the first hall that is it!! 2 side galleries one about the stars then your in the shop and café and the way out. I would like to think that more communication would be useful to visitors. I no it a great museum as I have read reviews and friends have recommended.

I'm a local so love this museum and usually there's so much to see and do - shops, kids section, museum. Of course this is all now changed. You have to book in advance (still free), 15 min time slots. They have a one way system which starts at the front, finishes at the back (by the cafe) and masks worn all the time. Felt very safe, lots of hand sanitisation, plenty of space and distance and had the chance to really look at the exhibits which are great. The kids play area is shut as are the cafes by the floor map but still worth going to.

  • 5/5 Sinead M. 3 years ago on Google
It is free, just book an entry slot time online, very friendly staff and well organised one way system. The only cafe open is at the end of the one way so if you want to go to cafe first enter from the back of the museum then go round the front for your timed slot. Fab collection!

I really enjoyed this museum. It gives a very in depth look at many of the seafaring adventurers throughout British history and helps you take a deep dive into many moments. It also has some interactive things for children, for families that want to enjoy the museum. Definitely set aside a full day to really be able to enjoy this experience.

Loads to see and do, and it's free! Book online before you go (because COVID restrictions). Play Tuesdays for the little ones is brilliant and it's only £4. The AHOY cisterns play area is usually brilliant, too, but it is closed at the moment. Currently there are one way systems in place and plenty of hand gel available. Cafe is open in Sammy Ofer wing though, and toilets are still available.

This museum is for those who are fascinated with sea and the art of navigation. It was officially established in 1934 and it’s relatively small compared to the other major museums in London. Here you can see real-sized items related to navigation e.g. propellers, ships, sculptures and navigational tools.

This was a stop gap as we were heading to a Naming Ceremony in Greenwich I was surprised it was free It was busy and there was not a one way system in place so you could walk anywhere Staff wearing masks and advised public to wear masks but not compulsory As we were limited for time we will be returning to look around properly but what we did see was very nice Worth a visit especially if visiting Greenwich Park this is within the grounds so if the weather is nice could have a picnic

Wonderful day out. Have wanted to visit for a long time and decided to go yesterday. What a brilliant place. So much to see, wonderful exhibits and artwork. Being from Portsmouth we have an interest in things maritime especially Tudor period and Admiral Nelson and were not disappointed in what we saw. They have the uniform Nelson was wearing when fatally wounded at Trafalgar which totally stunned me as well as the cannon ball that struck HMS Victory among many other wonderful exhibits. There is something for everyone here, too much to list but have posted some pictures of some of the exhibits. We booked tickets online in advance in case it was busy and were offered car parking from 10.00-5.00 for just £10 which I would recommend. It meant we could visit the museum and then take a Thames River cruise safe in the knowledge the car was secure. Please try and visit this museum if you get the chance it is thoroughly recommended.

So much to see here it's well worth your time to visit. Free to enter the general museum, you only pay for specific, temporary exhibitions. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff only too happy to help or answer any questions, particularly the lady in the Pacific section. A most enjoyable experience!

Nice museum about maritime history. Some of it was closed off, but the open areas were interesting. It had an exhibition with paintings of monarchs from the National Portrait Gallery, which is being refurbished. There was an entry fee for the exhibition, but it was free for members. It is best if you prebook due to covid restrictions on numbers.

Didnt have enough time to see everything I would have liked to as my visit took me elsewhere in Greenwich. The museum was however a must see and a place I will go back to in the future. The exhibits in the various galleries were laid out in a very accessible manner and appeared to be of a very high standard.

Big museum with great collection of the British maritime history. It worth several visits to digest the huge historical richness inside. Staff was always helpful. The Café was a lovely place to relax and the shop full of lovel maritime themed objects.

What an amazing view on a clear sunny day - well worth the steps. The Observatory itself is filled with amazing history and will be appreciated by those of us who realise how little we have left of time. Might not be the most exhilarating experience for younger kids mind you especially primary age.

The National Maritime Museum (NMM) is a maritime museum in Greenwich, London. It is part of Royal Museums Greenwich, a network of museums in the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Like other publicly funded national museums in the United Kingdom, it has no general admission charge; there are admission charges for most side-gallery temporary exhibitions, usually supplemented by many loaned works from other museums.

Visited today and had a heart felt feeling for veterans who have served the navy and appreciations to our oceanic nature , constant improvements of trades, technology and cultures in the exchange via oceans in continents. Kids friendly and a lot things to experience and learn. Hope to see more in Traders history in the future. Royal observatory, Queen’s house just near your foot steps around the estate and Cutty Sark couldn’t be missed.

What a wonderful museum celebrating all things naval. Part of the Royal Greenwich Museums, the maritime museum is free. Members go free to exhibitions. There is a wealth of history including Nelson's uniform! There are galleries looking at history, but also life at sea in present times. I loved the free exhibition on living in Antarctica, and also the North pole. The exhibits on migration and slavery are both informative, poignant and thought provoking. The museum has a modern feel, lots of interactive things. Highly recommend a visit

Very good place to spend a Sunday with friends and family. A lot of great things to learn and discover. The only poor thing is the shop, nothing much to buy and I couldn't find any magnets. Rest of our experience was great.

The Biggest Maritime Museum in the World : The National Maritime Museum, UK. South East London. This is a site that deals with the preservation and showcasing of ships, astronomical observations, time, stars and many other unique items different from the ones that are routine in other museums. The figure heads and naval badges can be seen in museum

I had a wonderful experience visiting this museum as it contains several unique pieces and maritime art. The visit has been even more special as I had the possibility to participate to a talk/short tour explaining specifics related to the royal yachts history. The guide was very professional and passionate about the topic! Thanks to Greenwich maritime museum and to their kind employees!

Reserve a couple of hours to browse the details of early maritime history. Children will particularly enjoy the displays as well as the interactive map and ride-able miniature ships (meant for kids under 5) in front of the first floor cafe.

  • 4/5 Jo B. 8 months ago on Google
Great location and the layout is elegant and beautifully signposted, but the content assumes a deal of prior knowledge. For instance, the polar exhibition goes straight into the stories of Franklin and Scott without really explaining who they are or giving any introduction.

  • 5/5 Gareth M. 8 months ago on Google
What a fascinating place. We learned so much about the Dutch navy and merchant vessels throughout history. The trip around the boat gives you an idea of how they lived while at sea. Brilliant place for everyone to go.

  • 3/5 Jon-Cameron Bates (. 4 months ago on Google
Slightly disappointing. The site and buildings are beautiful but we did get a little bored at the somewhat sparse exhibits. Lots of kids running around who are not really interested in old ships, paintings and trade routes, the cafe charging way too much for its mediocre refreshments. It's free to enter so that's a positive, and there is a skating rink over the winter months for something very unrelated to do.

If you are a fan of maritime history, you will love it here. Each section is dedicated to certain part of the world, there is an amazing indoor and outdoor playground for kids, nice caffeteria and the building itself is wonderful. Great day in Greenwich.
