The amount of History is amazing. Did you know the tickets come out the first Wednesday of the month before? I figured this out Thursday and could only book a Sunday @1030a. It's about a 2' drive or on the train from DE to DC. We actually lucked up and found free parking but I did see meters other places so check the parking situation. The Museum is gorgeous. To get to the main exhibit is was about a 25 minute wait to get in there. But once in, Wow! Two hours is really not enough time to see it all but it can be tiresome to some with all the walking. This place is also handicap accessible and can provide elevators if needed. Eat before you go or they have a Cafe but it closes around 3p. You must be vaccinated to go into the cafe. NO vaccination required to visit the exhibits.

I appreciate the masterminds behind this museum and I am glad that I experienced it for the first time with my children. It is up to us to make sure that the next generation knows what our ancestors endured for us to be able to live the lives that we live. While some of us are fumbling at life, the opportunities are there for us to succeed if we just get out of our own ways. This museum made me travel through a wide range of emotions from joy to sorrow to anger and peace in seven hours (yes, we were there from 10am to 5pm). I talk to my kids about our history, but it's nothing like seeing it and being able to listen to the stories about what our people have gone through. We started from the top of the museum and went down so that we could have time with each exhibit with less people. I made a list of movies of classic Black movies to watch with my children because of the Film/Arts exhibit. I can't believe my kids have never seen "A Raisin in the Sun", "The Imitation of Life" and "Do the Right Thing" among some other ones. (Am I failing as a mother...jeez 😂). The interactive floor was fun so make sure you spend some time there. We ate at the cafe and ordered fried chicken, greens, mac n cheese, and cornbread. The food was good but the chicken could have used just a little more seasoning. I purchased souvenirs from the store to remind me of my time at this amazing place. Ohhhh, I love how you can't really skip the C-level floors...the real real Black history is kinda forced on you because there is no escaping once you are down there. The packed elevator ride down made me think wow this sort of mimicks how our people were packed on those ships. And while we can't feel exactly what our ancestors felt, we can empathize with them and continue to honor them by being the great Black people that we are. If the Tell Your History booths are open, take the time and tell your story.

I've been trying to get in this building since it opened I went with my daughter and her girl scout Troup. Loving it. My legs and hips were hurting after all that walking but it was worth it. I Love my black history.

Lots to see here. Give yourself lots of time to go through the exhibits. They update the upper sections more frequently. I recommend going on a week day. I was last here on a Sunday in feb. It was busy but no wait. It can get very busy at other times. The food in the cafeteria is also tasty if your not in the mood for the food trucks outside. You can also walk a few blocks for more food options.

Excellent experience. This place is full of emotions, history and great atmosphere. There is a waterfall on the ground level that you cannot miss. Emotions may run high, so take some tissue. There will be people here from different cultures and believe, so pay no mind to what may come out of people's mouth. My overall experiences superb and I highly recommend this place for anyone of any age.

This museum is beautiful, we arrived on January 1, 2024 and it was open. You must buy your ticket on their website and it will reach you via text message if you enter your phone number. Tickets are free. You can look for parking in the surroundings. We found it close to Av. Constitución since it was a holiday. Inside you can get a plan with all the floors to visit. On the central floor is the souvenir shop and there is a cafeteria with a large dining room where you can find several options to eat. The place is beautiful and with a lot of history, we really had a great time.

A great place to explore history. The exhibits are interactive and you can easily spend several hours and still not see it all. Be sure to try the restaurant while you're there. Excellent chicken and sides.

Gosh such mixed emotions. The content is great but the designers of this Muesem failed. The history portion was way overcrowded so even off season we were packed like sardines. Then the design for each exhibit made it so you couldn't even read the information because window borders were blocking the view. The label plates were glossy or shiny with lights preventing them from being ready. Overall very disappointing to have such a good amount of information hampered by poor design choices.

Here is the deal! We had an awesome experience. It was very educational and awe inspiring. I didn't see Malcolm X at all. I don't understand why? The history of the Nation of Islam was represented. Coming from a historian. Without Malcolm I just don't know how you could tell that story. So for me understand that I'm in Washington DC the land of politics: this had to be political.

Wow, what an amazing experience! A friend told us that we needed at least 6 hours or multiple days to explore the seven floors (including the basement levels), and they were not exaggerating. We scheduled 4 hours and had to skip a lot of the videos and rush through the upper levels just to get to the main things we wanted to see. Tickets for the dates we wanted were all taken when we tried to book a few weeks out, but we got on the site at 8:15 am the same day we wanted to go and was able to grab six tickets for 10 am. It's highly recommended that you book a whole day or multiple visits if you want to really take it all in.

We have visited many museums and sites devoted to civil rights around the country. This was our first visit to the National Museum. We also saw they had an award winning cafe with a special menu of southern specialties for Christmas. We started with that for a fabulous lunch then started our trip through the museum. Starting with the early history of the slave trade and continuing through black people's journey through US history to today made for one incredible emotional experience. We spent nearly 5 hours absorbing as much detail as we could.

If I could give this place a 10 star I would! It was an absolutely humbling experience ! Where do you start ? The layout is phenomenal ! You really could take two days to go through everything. If you have the time start on the bottom and work your way through. My favorite sections were the slave house, black panther party section, segregated train and the Oprah section. They have several interactive things throughout the museum as well. I like how they even mentioned controversial subjects like project housing also. All the way up to current events. On the main floor is the food court and the food was delicious! I had the Mac and cheese with collard greens and fried chicken and cornbread. Everything was delicious and the portions were very large. Parking was the only challenge but I parked a few blocks away and walked. There was a line outside but I only waited for about 10 minutes. This was something I had wanted to do for a long time and traveled all the way from Atlanta to experience and it was completely worth it and I will remember it forever. Hopefully I will be able to come back again soon. !

Powerful experience! Sad, enlightening, and encouraging all in the same breath! Takes several visits! We digest the powerful experience on the lower level and came back the next day. Saw a lot, still more to see & learn. I am honored at how strong my people are and all they endured for some of comforts we have today and don't even think twice about.

Love this place. My all time favorite museum. Huge. They cover African American history from the 1600’s to present day and the DONT MISS ANYTHING in between. I mean NOTHING. This is DEFINITELY A MUST SEE!!!! Some of the exhibits will take you back in time. Admission is FREE!! Just book a time slot on the website. There’s usually NO LINES or WAIT TIMES. I’ve been here twice and never had to wait or wait on a line. Also you can walk up to the front door and scan the barcode on book a time slot on the spot. But you have to book a slot.

Powerful, emotional, rich, fair, i learnt so much & i really appreciated the respect for gender diversity. Women are given their place in the history of African Americans as well as the diaspora. Must see. But you need to book even if it's free.

1st time visiting the museum and I highly recommend viewing the Concourse exhibit if you do nothing else. The concourse is where the Emmitt Till exhibit is located and that did have the longest wait time, but more than worth it. There were so many beautiful artifacts and amazing visuals to go along with some of the images and artifacts. The 1st floor when you walk in was also overwhelming hearing the audio of the slaves saying they rather jump ship than travel to an unknown world without their families!

This was one of the best museums I’ve ever visited. We purchased a package that gave us an African American perspective of DC. We did a city tour (US Tours) that ended at The African American History Museum. We gained so much knowledge from the tour guide that you just don’t learn from a book. The museum is a lot to see and it’s recommended that you start in the basement and go up from there. It also may take more than a day to enjoy the museum. We began at the restaurant. The food was decent authentic soul food. The portions were huge and we wish we would have just shared a plate so we didn’t have much waste. The prices in the restaurant are about what you’d pay in a theme park for food. We then started our tour on the top of the building and went down from there. I’m glad we did it this way. It was incredible to see all the contributions to history that African Americans have made. We finally made it to the bottom floor and it goes with out saying that the first few hundred years was really sad and de humanizing. It was incredibly overwhelmingly for our 7 year old so we stepped away to educate her gently. Then proceeded to the other floors after to enjoying the Reflection Falls. You must stop at The Falls. This building offered offers lockers by the 1st floor restrooms that is super helpful. Also they have elevator operators that also help as guide through the museum. It is very mobility friendly. But the crowd can get pretty thick. We went on a weekday and it was still small crowds in a good amount of places. Don’t forget to check out the gift shop. They have so many goodies in there.

Opened in 2016, this museum is a must see for understanding and inspiration of African American history, culture, and art over the past centuries and how people and event have shaped our nation. There are 6 levels starting underground with the origins of the slave trade in Europe and the US. As you move up each level, you'll be immersed in the struggles for freedom, respect, equality, success, and hope. I recommend AT LEAST 2 hours (3+ if you'd like to get the full experience). This museum is on the top of my list when I return to DC again.

This museum is phenomenal. You are definitely going to want an entire day to experience everything it has to offer. Early is best for parking anywhere near the national mall. I recommend an early Sunday visit and keep in mind that the only food available in that area are going to be the extremely expensive standard food trucks. Have fun!

One of the best museums on the national mall rivaling some of the best museums anywhere in the world. Well laid out massive space that's organized and with plenty of exhibit halls to satisfy the most curious intellectual. Easily spend 2-3 hours here to rush through a lot of the information. Worth visiting multiple times especially if you're a local. Really love the underground exhibit detailing some of the most pertinent aspect of African American History and Culture. Extremely immersive and interactive in other exhibits. Well worth a visit for adults and children alike.

Always a beautiful gem to return to to honor the history of our journey as a people and resiliency to overcome. Love the architect, the structure of the exhibits and the empowerment going through each floor. Beautiful exhibits, wealth of information and an emotional journey through time. If you're an avid reader plan at least 2 days! A beautiful bookstore as well! Also disappointed but understand due to the pandemic their cafe was very limited and mainly wrapped food and not the exquisite variety of hot entrees when I was last their 2017! Overall a must see at least once and since some exhibits change at least return once a year if you're local and take any our of town guests to visit!

The African American National History Museum in D.C. is nothing short of superb, deserving a glowing 5-star rating! My visit was an unforgettable journey through the rich tapestry of African American history and culture. The architecture is breathtaking, and the exhibits are thoughtfully curated, offering deep insights into the African American experience. A pro tip for future visitors: start your exploration from the underground levels. This museum beautifully chronicles the story of resilience, achievement, and contributions, and it's an absolute must-visit for everyone to gain a deeper understanding of American history.

Very humbling experience about the history of the world and the African American suffering. There's also a lot of good reminders about the power of the people, united, to make a positive change, and the neverending battle for equality. One day is not enough to visit this museum. Thanks to those that put this all together, everyone needs to see it.

Great experience. You'll need 3 days, at least, to see everything. Lots to read and look at. There's a place to eat that smelled really good and theres a peaceful place to sit and think. Closes at 5pm I believe so keep an eye on your time. I parked at a hotel and it was only a 3 to 4 block walk from there to get to the museum. 35$ for 3 to 4 hrs. Enjoy!

This was truly one of the best museums I have ever been - if not the best. It is wonderful to see how agency is placed with the black community itself, and it is such a wonderful and joyful celebration of black existence. The museum tells a story of struggle, survival and thriving. Truly inspiring and, as a non-US citizen, very informative. A personal highlight is the chapel you run into after walking the three floors of the museum.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is a Smithsonian Institution museum located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in the United States. It was established in December 2003 and opened its permanent home in September 2016 with a ceremony led by President Barack Obama. Early efforts to establish a federally owned museum featuring African-American history and culture can be traced to 1915, although the modern push for such an organization did not begin until the 1970s. After years of little success, a much more serious legislative push began in 1988 that led to authorization of the museum in 2003. A site was selected in 2006, and a design submitted by Freelon Group/Adjaye Associates/Davis Brody Bond was chosen in 2009. Construction began in 2012 and the museum completed in 2016. The NMAAHC is the largest museum dedicated to African-American history and culture. It ranked as the fourth most-visited Smithsonian museum in its first full year of operation. The museum has more than 40,000 objects in its collection, although only about 3,500 items are on display. The 350,000-square-foot (33,000 m2), 10 story building (five above and five below ground) and its exhibits have won critical praise.

This museum totally captures the horrific moments in time that African Americans endored. Its about time there is a historic National museum that acknowledges that that these events in American history did indeed occur, and the role Americans had in the slave trade. The overcoming of oppression, justice and equality is still a fight, however the advances and contributions made in history from African Americans are undeniable. This museum encompass all of this and more! Highly recommend attending. Best of all, its free!

Very neat place. Was a great, but humbling experience. Would recommend. Way too much to see in two hours. We plan to come back when we can spend more time at the exhibits. There was a grind floor section of Black History that we were not able to get to. We were here for the Juneteenth Celebration and there was a live band inside and out and events for children.

Man, this was a fantastic experience. It was extra special because I got to attend a special event held in the museum. I was only able to take in the first two floors of the exhibit (you start at the bottom and work your way up). It’s hard to maintain composure from taking in all the information. It’s impossible to do in one day there is so much to see and learn. Another fine trip to DC in the books. Can’t wait to come back.

An eye opening experience that you won't forget. You start in the basement, cramped to simulate the feeling of a slave ship. As you move up the 1.5 mile trek, you move up and forward through time. It is a beautiful journey - somber and joyful, haunting and freeing. Best to spend at least 2 days here, if not more.

This was my first visit. The contents of the permanent exhibits were thoughtfully assembled and meticulously curated. The temporary exhibit, called “Reckoning,” was stunning! I only had a few hours so I couldn’t spend as much time there as I wanted. You could take the better part of a day looking at everything! It’s a beautiful place sharing important history and should be a required stop for anyone in DC. I started at the top floor and worked my way down. The architect designed the building so that each floor has a core in which the exhibits are housed, leaving the outside passageways open to the large windows and natural light. This is a thoughtful, modern design allowing for abundant natural light and great views. My only complaint is the museum’s way finding and informational signage. There were no paper maps when I visited, so I scanned a QR code to get a digital map. The digital map was hard to read on my iPhone’s small screen; I couldn’t get a great overview of the museum’s space or contents, so I gave up on using it. I also found that the informational signage on each floor wasn’t really clear. For example, I could tell when I was on the floor with the Heritage Galleries, but had no idea what the Heritage Galleries were or what they contained. I didn’t take any stars off for these issues because they’re minor and easily resolved. One important note is that you need a timed entry pass to enter! They’re very easy to get - and free - before you visit.

Magnificent museum experience! Haunting of course with the history of humans being terrible to other humans because of skewed biases and atrocious prejudices. However it was extremely informative and the museum is wonderfully put together. The hall of reflection at the end was perfect. Allowed me the time I needed to cope with the vitriolic nature of humans. The wild part was that there was a terrible storm going on outside while I was in the exhibit. It altered my route home but the museum kept us safe before the trip!

There is so much to see, and you will want to give yourself time. Getting the 2:15 entry doesn't really give you enough time before closing. There is a really good soul food restaurant inside the museum. One plate can easily feed 2 people.

Incredible museum. This was so well done and captured the history and the culture so well, very immersive experience. There is so much information I recommend either a full day or going for a few hours two days in a row to truly absorb it all. It was very crowded, but people were polite so easy to navigate through. You need to get tickets in advance - they book fast so make sure to secure your tickets weeks ahead of time.

A great museum. Lots of history. Some of the images and artifacts cause sadness realizing the time span of the atrocities, some of them surprisingly recent. Some exhibits also celebrate black contributions, mostly in sports and entertainment. Maybe they will add more black inventors and contributors to the sciences.

A very humbling experience & powerful telling of African-American culture and heritage. It was easy to book a free ticket online at the last minute, and I didn’t have to wait long at all to get in. The Afro-future exhibit on the top floor was amazing, very futuristic and hopeful, and I particularly liked the dance section covering Alvin Ailey, Dance Theatre of Harlem & Martha Graham among others. The lower levels cover the 400 years of slavery and very factually and movingly tells the story on an individual, local and international scale that will stay with me for a long time with engaging artefacts & displays. There’s a reflection pool to spend some time in after these exhibits, and it was a special place of peace to reflect on sacrifices made & a hope we learn from the past. The cafe did lovely homemade food - I wasn’t that hungry so some reasonably priced pecan pie & coffee was the order of the day, although the southern cooked home-style food looked insane & decent prices for central DC. Definitely a place you need to visit a few times to really take in, I spent the best part of 4 hours until closing & hardly feel I scratched the surface.

This is a massive museum giving most of us African Americans our history that has been lost leaving us left with a void in our lives. Very emotional walking in learning that we come from rich, vast, and intelligent civilizations. If you go you must start early or plan to go a few days at a time because you won't be able to cover it all in one day. I absolutely loved every minute of it.

Decided to visit "THE SMITHSONIAN AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM " during COVID... I am so glad, I did. I was able to obtain free tickets to the museum quickly. Parking was 2 blocks away for $25 for the day. The line moved quickly even in the rain. I was able to see all 5 floors in one day. The museum had limited people and it was easy to navigate. I loved the hand sanitizer on every floor. I was able to take pictures and view all exhibits that were opened. This is a must see museum..... EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE!!!!

Great place to visit and learn one of the unpleasant histories happened on the planet. Exhibits are nicely arranged and informative. When you go 3 floors down to year 1400 in a huge elevator, it feels like we are actually in that period, environment is so real like. 3 basement floors dedicated to the history. It's free, but need a ticket. Better to reserve the ticket online, so you are in, we had to wait for 45 minutes to get tickets during the busy time.

I had an interesting experience visiting this museum last summer. The receptionist was very informative and friendly. The weird thing was what I saw in the train car in the segregation section. After stepping over the threshold into the colored only section of the train, I made eye contact with a man dressed in 1930's clothing with a briefcase on his lap. His face had no shape. Just black. He wore a grey plaid suit jacket and tie and a Frank Sinatra style hat. The train car looked completely different at the moment. Wood trim everywhere with yellow wall paper. It was a bright sunny day outside the windows. Upon hearing the recordings the museum plays on the intercoms, it was like I woke up, and immediately forgot what I saw. The train felt cold for a second before I briefly ran out of the train car and continued on my through the rest of the museum. I recalled what I saw hours later and realized I saw something quite extraordinary. I don't know if anyone else has reported the same siting but I get the sense that man rode that train back in the day. And I saw him...

This was phenomenal. Each floor has information on so many African American moments in history. Due to COVID precautions and safety, there were some exhibits that were modified or not accessible but still worth the visit. It's not a complete trip to DC without a visit here.

This museum is truly amazing. I've been here twice and still have not seen everything. You really need about 3 days to truly grasp all that it has to offer. It is too overwhelming to explore everything in 1day. If you have not been here this is a must see/visit. I will not try to describe all that there is to see you simply must visit.

A must see museum. A place to understand the history of slavery against Black People and the fight for freedom. The hard and detrimental daily struggles that was fought by heroic men & women against racial inequality and injustice; a fight for Change! I personally found this visit insightful, fascinating, empowering but (be prepared) deeply overwhelming emotionally! Thankfully at the end of the visit, there is a beautful, perfectly lit, calm large room. Where you listen to a beautiful placed circular ceiling to floor waterfall. Stand or sit, it is a time to reflect. Placed around the waterfall on each wall, are uplifting words of great inspiring men & women, before moving forward positively.

This was an incredible experience in an awesome museum. As part of the Smithsonian it's free but I would have paid to see this. Unfortunately, we couldn't see everything on this visit (only 2 levels) but we will DEFINITELY be going back! I love that it's also interactive so kids can enjoy it and benefit from it as well. It's definitely a must see when you're in D.C. and it's definitely my favorite museum there.

Reserved tickets 30 days in advance to be sure we got the time slot wanted and the day. We arrived 15 min before our time and entered when doors opened. The building is beautiful. The architecture itself is something to see. From here, you can view the Washington Monument and a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The exhibits and items inside this museum were great. We spent hours in here. A cafe with MANY options is available with decent pricing and serving sizes. Truly a great museum and all staff were very helpful and kind.

Please get your tickets in advance and arrive early. Lines get long fast! Wear comfortable sneakers and have plenty of hours to devote to reading, observing and walking while enjoying the Museum. If you're going to eat there, it's EXPENSIVE!!! and so is the gift shop but the experience is so worth it. Make it a long family day of fun & learning.

Our timed entry tickets were for 1:30 but with a traffic delay we arrived an hour late. This was not an issue, but honestly if you’re going to take your time and try and really process the information being presented, this was not enough time! We arrived at 2:30 and went straight to the restaurant. We had missed lunch and the restaurant closes at 3, so our hand was forced. Lots of yummy looking options, my husband and I split the pulled pork, squash, and rice with red beans, plus a bread pudding. The plate of food was around $18, plus dessert and two drinks came to around $30. Next we went to the lowest level of the museum to begin our museum experience. Honestly, and as it should be, it’s heavy stuff. I can’t say I learned anything new, but having so many pieces of history pulled together and organized in a clear and meaningful way was helpful and really well done. There was a stark, emotionally intense moment for me, with a big brother trying to explain to his sister what the child sized shackles were for. I think if you’re approaching this right, it’s probably going to hurt and be uncomfortable. It took my husband and I two hours to explore just the lowest concourse, one sixth of the museum. We kind of rushed through the middle level concourse, but I’ll definitely start there when I go back. There is a special exhibit for Emmett Till. I am admittedly a tender hearted person, and I am very familiar with Emmett’s story. I will go in next time, but after the first floor my mama heart was already aching. I was not prepared and the warning outside about the violent nature his murder, I couldn’t bring myself to go in. Now that I know it exists I’ll be better prepared for that experience. I’ve heard mixed things about taking children to this museum. I think there is good arguments to be had on either side. For me it was jarring to see kids wandering and maybe less reverent than you might expect in some of the sections. Now that I’ve been there it is something I will save for when my kids are teenagers. I don’t want my kids to be the distraction, and I also want the experience to be powerful and meaningful for them - not just another boring museum. Totally get why people might want to take younger kids, I’d probably stick to more recent history sections and the celebratory sections, not because kids shouldn’t learn the history of slavery in America, but because there are more age appropriate and developmentally sensitive ways of teaching that history. Overall this was an incredibly experience, and I suspect it will take two-three more visits to explore the whole museum. The gift shop closes at five on, thirty minutes before the museum closes. The lowest floor/section did not have any benches. I have spinal nerve damage due to my cancer history and not having a spot to sit down along the way was really unfortunate. The back section and other floors had benches every now and then. Overall an incredible experience, we will definitely be going back a few times. Those child sized shackles will live in my mind forever. Nothing anyone says will ever justify or fix the injustice of the mere idea, let alone creation and usage of such a thing.

So moving, interesting and educational it’s a MUST DO . Reserve your tickets on the website 30 days before the day you want to go. You must get tickets on advance. This is a huge museum. I believe there was four floors you could spend most of the day they’re easily. Also, the sweet home café, which is the cafeteria there has the best food. Get there early when it opens 11 AM. It gets full very fast. And don’t think that you have to wait in the line that forms at the front of the café. Grab a tray, walk around and get what you want from the different stations . Good variety of food fried chicken, ribs, catfish were some some main entrees . Lots of deserts

This place was so impressive from the outside in. The architecture from the outside seems otherworldly. It seems like almost out of the future, but with an African accent. The color is so Rich and gold color. And I just can’t begin to say how impressed I was with all of the exhibit inside. We couldn’t even try to see it all in one day. We’re going to have to go back to DC and see the rest of it and take a couple of days. A history teacher could have a field day, several days with his or her students in that place. The interior is well designed and full of black culture. And there are three floors to it. The bookstore is very nice but kind of pricey. I think many things were well overpriced. But I bought a few things Downstairs we went to the restaurant and OMG was that too good! I can’t say anything else that would do this place Justice. You have to come see it for yourself.

An amazing experience in the heart of D.C. and a tribute to the contributions of people of color in America. So much to see and you will definitely need more than one day to take this all in. This museum should be a “must see” for all students in school. It captures from pre-enslavement to current day figures that have contributed in so many ways, technical, political, science, sports, and entertainment. The building itself is a work of art!

I have been wanting to visit since it opened and finally got the chance. It's a spectacular museum with in depth history, many historical artifacts and a lot of information. There is also audio and video content interspersed throughout the exhibits. We were there for about 2 hours, though we could've stayed longer. The current Afrofuturism exhibit is great too. Lots of pop culture memorabilia, music, film and costumes. Admission is free (donations are welcome). It's best to plan ahead and book your timed entry ticket in advance as times do fill up!

Was here about a year ago and decided to post my experience now. So much to see and me and my family experienced everything in one day that this building holds. I had such an amazing and memorable time that I brought my best girlfriend with me to experience this rich history of Black and African Americans. Hours upon hours can be spent inside here. The outside of the building is exquisite and captivating as well as the interactive inside. Oh man! Check out the gift shop. I could go on about this place. On visit isn’t enough. I’m telling you facts right now. The people at the information (I didn’t need assistance)are so polite, respectful, positive, and professional. Check it out for yourself. You’ll come back again. I know you will.

My experience here was great. I went by myself and actually couldn't find my ticket (on a slow day) so the people at the front just let me go in. The information is amazing. The museum was clean and staff was so friendly and helpful. The restaurant was pretty good and even during a slow day, the line/wait was long. I didn't get to see everything and hope to visit again soon.

I went in February 2020 and I highly recommend people who are apart of the African American (descendants of American chattel slavery) ethnicity to visit this museum. I feel as though a lot of us are ignorant to our own history and sometimes let others tell us we don't have a culture or history to be proud of. This museum made me emotionally overwhelmed and gave me a deeper sense pride to be AA and our resilience as a people. The amount of depth and research that went into each exhibit is above and beyond and you can literally spend days in here and not cover the whole museum. I wish I had more time to go through, but I was on a time crunch. I'm hoping to visit again ASAP and plan to bring my future children here as well. People outside the AA ethnicity I hope you don't feel unwelcomed to visit here. I hope people of all cultures visit this place and educate themselves. This museum is truly a gem in our nation's capitol and a long awaited one by AAs.

Museum itself is incredible. The exhibits are of high quality and well worth the visit. The only reason for losing a star is they haven’t yet figured out how to manage capacity requirements with COVID. Very confusing trying to get in, they have a completely different process than all of the other Smithsonian Museums. If you get there less than an hour before closing they will probably be rude to you and not let you in. For every rude employee there was a very helpful employee to even things out. Great place to lean in and take a deep dive into African American history. The museum layout was very well organized with themes that chronologically depicts the past to the present. Love the exhibits, artifacts, the audio stories. There's also places where you can sit and take a break and process the stories shared. The Sweet Home Cafe food was delicious, and the bookstore was lovely. Will definite be back. There's so much to see and learn. You can't cover it all sufficiently in one visit.

This museum was beautiful and relevant and interactive and, like I've heard about every Smithsonian museum, so large and full and detailed, that it takes more than one visit to absorb completely (or even rush through!) I don't live on the east coast and it's not easy to get to regularly but I hope to visit again and spend more time in this museum. It is truly a treasure of culture and history. Finally the thoughtful recognition of all the contributions and accomplishments, sacrifice, fight and loyalty to human rights and growth that a race of people so deserve to be revered.

I have been wanting to see this for a very long time and it was worth the wait. It can be a very intense experience to see how enslaved people were treated and yet they would not be bowed. They worked very hard to achieve their rights and in spite of everything these folks persisted and endured and still hold this country in their hearts while insisting they too are counted and blessed with the promise of the Declaration of Independence. Truly inspiring. Also by the way, the food in the restaurant is extremely good.

Visiting the African American Museum in Washington, DC was an extraordinary experience that left me deeply moved and enlightened. From the moment I stepped foot inside, I was captivated by the power and significance of every exhibit, and I found myself going through a whirlwind of emotions. The museum's ability to convey the rich tapestry of African American history and culture is truly remarkable. Each exhibit tells a profound story, shedding light on the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of African Americans throughout the centuries. I was taken on a journey that encompassed both the painful chapters of oppression and the moments of resilience and triumph that have shaped the African American experience. What struck me most was the museum's ability to engage visitors of all backgrounds. It is a place that teaches, challenges, and inspires, regardless of one's prior knowledge or personal connection to the subject matter. The curators have done an exceptional job of presenting history in a way that is accessible, thought-provoking, and inclusive. The exhibits themselves are beautifully designed, providing a visually stunning backdrop to the stories they tell. The attention to detail and the dedication to preserving and honoring African American heritage is evident in every corner. From the hauntingly powerful artifacts to the interactive displays, each element contributes to an immersive and unforgettable experience. As an African American, seeing my history represented in such a profound and comprehensive manner was deeply moving. It was a reminder of the resilience and strength of my ancestors and the countless individuals who have contributed to the progress and cultural richness of our nation. It left me with a renewed sense of pride and a deeper understanding of the struggles and achievements that have shaped my identity. However, the impact of this museum extends far beyond the African American community. It is a place that fosters empathy, understanding, and unity. I firmly believe that everyone, regardless of their background, should visit this museum. By doing so, we can collectively confront our past, embrace our shared humanity, and work towards a more inclusive and just future. In conclusion, the African American Museum in Washington, DC is a must-see destination that offers a transformative journey through history and culture. Prepare to be inspired, educated, and moved. This museum stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the African American people and serves as a beacon of hope and progress for all.

I was extremely happy to visit and experience the great achievements of my culture that contributed to the overall success of the nation and world. However, I was also deeply saddened and ashamed of my country for the efforts being made by Donald Trump, Kevin McCarthy, Ron Desantis and others to return my culture to the remnants displayed on the lower levels of the museum. Those individuals represent a larger number of politicians seeking to strip Americans of basic rights, silence our ability to speak out against wrongs, beat and kill us in plain sight, amend and write laws to get away with it all! So my experience caused me to leave the history lesson angry!

The building's architecture is astounding! EVERY person must have a FREE timed-entry ticket to be admitted! Gain information from the Walmart Welcome Center on L1 in Heritage Hall. You'll find the Museum Store there as well. The Oprah Winfrey Theater and Sweet Home Cafe are on the Main Concourse. I was extremely disappointed by the cafe's offerings; I would not eat there again. BUTTT...I didn't go to NMAAHC for the food. Moving along the historical timeline, which begins on the lower levels of the Concourse from C3 to C1, spans approximately 600 years. Feel free to Explore More! on L2. Venture further to peruse the Community and Culture Galleries on L3 and L4 respectively. It's impossible to view, listen to and digest all that is on display in this magnificent structure! If you pitched a tent somewhere 😄 and visited all day everyday for a month, you'd still not be able to absorb everything. The staff members are warm, welcoming and kind. I had a wonderful time. It was an OUTSTANDING experience...I'll be planning a return trip soon!!! Last, but definitely not least...dress comfortably; walking shoes are an absolute must!

I recommend starting from the bottom and going up. That's not all. Once you're done, each floor has a side section. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Go early. It took me 5 hours to see everything. Eat at the café. The hours are 11a-3p. There is no takeout, and the portions are large. The food is Southern Comfort food. Good, y'all. It is worth it. There is a space to charge your phone. Veterans, you don't need a ticket. You can skip the line, just show proof.

To me, the lowest levels were the most interesting and impactful. The museum itself, however, isn't that well designed. There's a lack of restroom access and much of the exhibit lacks directionality. People end up milling around alot and backtracking.

This was a really thoughtful and detailed introduction into the history and shared culture of Blacks in America, providing education starting with early slave trading in Western Africa. The flow of the tour starts on the bottom floor and continues to the top. There was tons to experience, and we spent about four hours in the museum. We were on a schedule, but definitely could have spent more time there. There were multiple restrooms and a few dining options as well.

What a beautiful place and so much HISTORY!!!!! I enjoyed every second of it. Would love to go back again on a less crowded day and just absorb it all. I am looking forward to my next visit. A must-see!

Wow, what an awesome trip. Getting in was easy. The crowd was pleasant and made the whole experience so wonderful. Can't wait to go back. We spent 4 hours there, and still didn't see it all, and there was a lot to see.

This is a must for every American to learn the truth about the African origins of our history. Absolutely stunning design to this building and a captivating journey through this museum (no pun intended) of a devastating history where Africans in diaspora reshaped democratic and collective possibilities because of their fortitude and creativity in the midst of oppression. Museum includes a superb African American restaurant, a contemplative center to reflect, recharge, and inspire, and an amazing Afro futurism exhibit that provokes new and other ways of thinking and being humanity. I thoroughly enjoyed my visits here and became a member. You should too. Website is really easy to navigate and obtain tickets in advance for your visit. Very easy if you get tickets in advance.
