I loved visiting this museum!! It had beautiful art. I spend about 2 hours there and completed the museum. I would recommend packing a lunch because the food is not tasty and is overpriced. If you’re looking something fun and interactive to do with kids I would try a different museum :)

I always enjoy a day at the museum. I especially love fashion exhibits. The Cafe is a lovely place to chat with companions about the art. Take the time to go into the tower and observe a lovely tree top view of the park

One of my favorite museums in SF is offering free Saturday’s during the summer. It opens at 9:30am but get here before 11 to beat the crowds - you’ll have the galleries to yourself. The Observation Tower is still closed for now. I hope they reopen it soon - it offers 360 views of the city. Currently exhibiting is Golden Gate by Hung Liu, a Chinese artist that immigrated to the US in 1984. Her work is displayed in the main hall and includes a massive green card. There’s a massive collection of indigenous works from Canada and Papua New Guinea in addition to American and European art. You’ll find a few very contemporary pieces hidden among the collection - this was a welcomed surprise. Gray’s Recipe for Survival was painted during the pandemic just last year.

So glad the museum had been opened again and I was able to book a trip for my SFUSD high school students. We are studying fashion and the Patrick Kelly exhibit fit in perfect for a trip. We then went back a couple weeks later to focus our attention on the small yet amazing collection of textiles on display from the Julia Brenner Collection.

Very interesting museum. Great physical space for art. Easy layout spread across two floor. Combination of Central American history and sculpture, American and other paintings and portraits, some very interesting modern art and striking views around San Francisco from 9th floor observation tower. Great manageable sized outdoor sculpture garden. Next door to Japanese Tea Garden, near botanical garden, and across from Science Museum.

Went on the first Tuesday of the month, so we got in free. I recommend reserving your free tickets on the website before you go. You can bypass the ticket booth upon entry (unless you want to get an audio guide). You will show proof of tickets to one of the docents near the stairs. The staff was really knowledgeable and explained where to go to see what exhibits. The artifact exhibit from Papua New Guinea was really interesting. My kids ages 8, 14, and 15 all thoroughly enjoyed it. Really unique art collections in the open collection. Worth a trip! There is street parking (free) that will require you to walk in a little bit, but it's cheaper than the $21 parking fee to use the garage.

The building itself is a treat, especially in the viewing area that overlooks the sculpture garden. It's light and open and displays the pieces well. They have a nice collection of American painters and we enjoyed going through the collections during an afternoon.

I enjoy this museum probably more than the rest in the city. Perhaps it's because there are more traditional paintings at this museum. There's also a really cool view of the park which is free to the public.

Museum inside is clean, well organized, and has interesting exhibitions. It's not as glamorous and grandiose as the museums in New York or Chicago, but there is a pretty yard nearby and the surrounding landscape is nice. If you visit there when the warm sunlight falls, a different atmosphere will be created and you will have a dreamy feeling from it

Wonderful art exhibit! Could spend the whole day looking at everything! My only request? Cool it down a bit more. Unless it's necessary to have it at a certain temp. All those people create body heat and it got a little toasty. Otherwise a wonderful experience! Looking forward to our next trip!

I love this museum. Just large enough to see in one day with out getting overwhelmed by art. The Alice Neely exhibit was great, saw the bouquet of arts as well, always fun. The new exhibit on the main floor was a nice change. I didn't take photos inside, just of the observation area.

Amazing museum in the beautiful Golden Gate Park. It is very educational for both kids and grown up. There are so many kinds of exhibits. The planetarium was very unique experience. Also try the earthquake experience. Parking might be a challenge which is expected in San Francisco.

Highly recommended! The museum is manageable: not overwhelming and not too small. Just perfect! The cafe is good with healthy options as well as sweets and savories. The art is diverse and well curated. Loved the Faith Ringgold exhibit and the Obama portraits. The museums sculpture garden is lovely and serene with plenty of space to roam and enjoy the art. Overall, one of my favorite museums in SF!

This is a must when in Golden Gate Park. Entry price is reasonable. Food costs were rather expensive but you are a captive audience. Plenty to see and read. The stories behind the artists and their work is interesting. Shops are well stocked. All staff were friendly and helpful. Temporary exhibitions are available at an additional cost. Definitely worth the walk through Golden Gate Park to get there.

Free with cultivist me membership with capital one. Very pretty museum with a ton of different exhibits. The pharaoh one is very cool with some AR exhibits, shows, mini movies and a ton of cool artifacts. There was also some abstract art, some art from other parts of the world including papa New Guinea and then some of the classical collection as well. The cafe is nice and friendly though a bit overpriced and there’s indoor and outdoor seats as well

De young museum is free on Saturday’s. It is a bit difficult to find parking, but we resorted to asking and waiting for someone to leave and walking to the museum. This is one of the best museums we’ve ever been to. The collections are interesting and different, many of which are my first time seeing. There is a variety of different art and the museum is big enough to explore all art works. Restrooms are clean.

We went to see the Ansell Adam's exhibit. It highlights the pictures during different stages of his life. Pictures are black and white. The other exhibits are interesting - detailed metal sculptures, African art, impressionist and other artwork. The cafe is a nice place to relax and eat. The sculpture garden provides serenity. A perfect place to spend a day in San Francisco.

A must visit! The museum is modern and clean. I recently came for the Kehinde Wiley exhibition. His work is powerful and awe-inspiring and a very relevant showcase. We also upgraded to include the Ansel Adams exhibit for a surcharge, which was absolutely worthwhile. We came on a weekend afternoon and there was no wait to enter. As the museum is nestled within Golden Gate Park, the parking is expectedly insane. We paid for parking at the Music Concourse Garage ($6.25 per hour on the weekends). When leaving the garage, I suggest taking the Fulton street exit. It’s much less congested that way. You can also try your luck to find parking along Fulton street too.

went on a Saturday that was free admission. The museum is lovely and has lots of exhibits to walk through. They have artifacts from different continents as well as a contemporary art gallery. courtyard is beautiful and has additional sculptures. They have a cafe inside that serves pastries, coffee, and snacks (be aware that they do not allow any beverages outside the cafe area)

This is such a fun museum and for Bay Area residents it’s free every Saturday! I came for the “De Young” Open 2023 art exhibition which featured hundreds of Bay Area artists. It’s a huge exhibition with different themed room and areas. My friend has his art up there, so I came to support. I love all the variety and levels of creativity. It’s such a fun museum! I’ve been here a few times and highly recommend it. It’s also smack in the middle of Golden Gate Park, so it’s easy to make it a whole day activity since there’s so much to see and do around. You gotta check it out!

This museum has an expensive admission fee, but a delightful day is guaranteed to the art lover. Their glass sculpture showcase was especially enjoyable, as I’ve admired Dale Chihuly’s work for a long time. An untitled cast glass figure wreathed in yellow, by Nicolas Africano, was the most intriguing piece. Don’t forget to go up the tower for a breathtaking 360 degree view of San Francisco landscape. It isn’t possible to savour all the collections this place offers in a day, so plan in advance.

What a beautiful museum. I walked inside the museum and they had a master of sewing factory, Julian Prince Dash, helping kids to stitch the bags with their own or parents art 💓 it was the cutest thing I ever seen in my entire life in museums. I walked inside and I saw museum art guides handing over kids and their parents the post cards for them to re-create art in museum. Impressionism, modernism, African and indigenous art. Beautiful museum with lovely helping people 🖼❤️

Enjoyed another remarkable opening night at the de Young Museum. They have had a few great shows this year including solo shows on Monet and Gauguin and some stellar group shows including this recent opener: Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963-1983. Truly eye opening. We decided to become members this year and have taken our friends to see shows. It has been truly worthwhile. Thanks

In my philosophy of art class, I wrote a paper about this post modern architecture building. Much more I learned about it from my research than was in the brochures or from the docent who talked about the architectural, modern movement Curious little museum, and the history of the architect. It's beautifully set in the San Francisco Golden Gate Park. See it for yourself, and maybe you'll take away a better appreciation of the post modern, architectural movement.

I really loved my experience perusing the decked out corridors of this highly stimulating museum. The African section was compelling as I felt a very natural and spiritual connection to the artifacts once revered. I got to see a Warhol piece and some other very interesting pieces as well as artists I've never heard of but had a pleasure acquainting. I would come here again and take more time to view it since I was a little pressed for time. I love spending time in golden gate park so this place makes it extra worthwhile. The museum attendants were very friendly and happy to be there. So was I.

I wish the observatory was open but the museum was still pretty good. My favorite thing was the room of glass art. The gift shop doesn't have a great selection despite being on two floors. The museum is really just two floors. The basement floor doesn't have much.

Visiting the de Young Museum on a free admission day was awesome! The building's modern architecture is super cool and eye-catching. Inside, there's a ton of stuff to see, from American paintings to European art and historical artifacts. The temporary exhibits and artist talks are always interesting. And don't miss the observation point on the top level—it offers a killer 360-degree view of Golden Gate Park and beyond. If you're into art and amazing views, this place is a must-visit in San Francisco!

A must see museum if you are visiting San Francisco. The layout and structure/architecture of the museum is beautiful in itself but the installations are also all unique and captivating on their own. Definitely make sure you take the elevator up to the top of the tower, the view is absolutely breath taking.

Beautiful museum, both the architecture of the building and the surroundings as well as the art around it. The exhibitions are interesting and worth the price of 20$. I've seen the art of Kehinde Wiley which was inspired by George Floyd and very impactful. There is also a small restaurant where you can stop by and grab a coffee.

I highly recommend Tuesday mornings at the DeYoung. Most galleries were only occupied by myself and museum staff. Which is a lovely way to experience such a esteemed collection. I was also impressed how many new works were included since my last visit. Many by local artist or depictions of local vistas. It is wonderful to see they have made the museum accessible to the whole local community by making it free on Saturdays. I’m not sure how they’re pulling that off financially, but I’ll be continuing to renew my membership to support this.

Great views of San Francisco IF the mist/fog allows.... museum has a great selection that changes a few times a year. I managed to see how life had been in certain parts of America his the areas where built and how society was formed, the tribal pieces and how life was affected by America, becoming America. Me being me I never visited the parts I had to pay, I put my money to my snack and drink. As I stated in my initial opening statement the views from the second floor, I don’t recall it’s name. Are simply stunning and you can see all of San Francisco in 360 degrees, being given this look at the city was the highlight fir me and I would definitely recommend and return. Go into my computer to find the pictures....

I love visiting this museum. It's spotlessly clean, beautifully built, respectful to the art it displays, and has such an amazing collection of art to enjoy. Every time I've been there, there are new exhibitions to see, I've never had a dull time. I wouldn't call this place particularly exciting for anyone too young: it's very quiet, and there's no interactivity. However, if you're an art lover, this museum celebrates both new and old artists with beautiful, clean, displays and enough rooms that you may not even get to see it all in one visit. One of the best art museums in the Bay area.

A great SF cultural resource. I went to see Soul of a Nation, a special exhibit originally from the Tate in London, covering Black artists during the first Black Power movement. Featured were some local Bay Area artists, especially relevant given the Oakland roots of the Black Panthers. The exhibit was varied with abstract, sculpture, and realistic segments. I especially enjoyed the David Hammons pieces.

  • 5/5 Kalim M. 4 years ago on Google
This is a beautiful museum with a large collection of artwork from Africa, the Americas, Oceania, and more. I came to see the Soul of a Nation exhibit focusing on the Black Power movement from 1963-1983, which proved to be expertly organized into several evocative themes. The regular gallery was also wonderful and I plan on returning for another look. The gallery was recently made free for Bay Area residents on Saturdays and the exhibit was discounted for residents as well.

Fabulous! I took my 8th grade students to see Soul of a Nation. I had just finished telling them the biography of Martin Luther King Jr. and the museum's display brought the lesson to life. The audio tour helped them stay focused. The works helped them see the civil rights movement is not just something from the past but something living today.

Architecture design is absolutely stunning. The space is so well design to host different exhibitions. The use of materials, the angles of the building form and nature lights permeate different corners of the space. The light is dancing around the building. As you walk through the exhibition, you also experience a architecture wonder. I enjoy the variety of contemporary exhibitions and truly feel touched and inspired by this museum.

I visit the Inner Sunset for extended periods to visit family. They live a few blocks from the de Young. It is such a wonderful place to spend a day or an hour. The view of the city from the tower is spectacular. I love wandering through the galleries and always spend time in their beautiful gift shop. The Soul of a Nation exhibit was wonderful, and gave me a lot of insightful into Black-American history. I would highly recommend getting the audio tour, as it adds additional value to the exhibits. The museum is well-served by transit, and is open reasonable hours. I went in February for the Soul if a Nation exhibit and it was beautiful, raw, inspiring, and thought provoking. The artists featured were also a part of black art movements in the US from 1964-1983. Just to clarify, some of the reviews and photos seem to thing this is the Academy of Sciences: this is an art museum. The art here is really gorgeous, and much of it features historical events. Sometimes they have special art showcases where art from a different culture or time period will be displayed, along with some awesome information about the culture. My personal favorite was ancient african art, it's so beautiful. Whever I come here to visit family, we always come to here (which is SUPER often, by the way).

The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, commonly referred to as the de Young, is a fine arts museum located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The de Young is named for early San Francisco newspaperman M. H. de Young. The season Young museum is located parallel to the California Academy of Sciences and the Golden Gate Amphitheater. Yesterday, I visited the de Young museum because of an amazing exhibit they’re showcasing, “Soul of a Nation.” Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963–1983 is an internationally acclaimed exhibition, organized by Tate Modern, which celebrates art made by Black artists during two pivotal decades when issues of race and identity dominated and defined both public and private discourse. The de Young’s presentation includes a focus on Bay Area artists whose work promoted personal and cultural pride, collective solidarity and empowerment, and political and social activism. If you’ve never been to the de Young museum, it’s open daily from about 9am - 5pm and has free days for Bay Area residents.

Came here for the first time for its bouquet art show. It was amazing! The pairing of bouquet with its exhibition is fascinating. Honestly, I never even seen some of the flowers used in the bouquet. We came on the last day of this 7 days show, some of the flowers are quite limpy by then. I recommend you come early in the week. Garage parking is expensive, about $12 for 2 hours. Street parking is very hard to find unless you come early. Plan to spend a good 3 hours in the museum.

An absolutely divine museum that pays a wonderful homage to the history of America as well as the collections of prominent (rich) American people. A modern layout does not detract from the incredible pieces on display. I really loved the staff and volunteers here - super friendly and always asking if there is any other way to help.

Beautiful museum, just a wonderful place to enjoy art with COVID restrictions in place. More than enough room for you to see exactly what you want to see and not have to deal with crowds of people. Highly recommended.

If you got a friend that doesnt know what kind of art speaks to them, take them to the De Young. It has a mish mash of different styles with regularly rotating traveling exhibits. From classic portraits to early American pottery to binary art, you can find everything as long as you visit a few times a year. EAT BEFORE VISITING!!! Almost every museum area is an island of expensive eats. I'll source my own meat if im gonna pay 14 dollars for a hotdog.

Meh. The tower was closed. They're stuffing way too many pieces onto the walls too close together. Space the works out. It's not a kindergarten classroom. Continues to disappoint. This is not a world class museum. Very provincial. I've seen better in Norfolk and Indianapolis to be honest.

Limited access, timed tickets for all access, not just special exhibit due to coronavirus. Cafe open during this period with table service to outdoor seating only. Frida Kahlo show gives outstanding background and insights into her life and work.

So wonderful to be in the city on such a beautiful day. The Friday Kahlo exhibit was amazing. What an inspirational woman, definitely avante gard. The pain she endured was evident in many of her paintings. I will return to one of my favorite museums soon.

Fantastic museum containing art and cultural artifacts from around the world. My favorite museum in SF for their amazing historical collections. You could spend whole days browsing through their exhibits.

Great variety in a really impressive building - similar to SF MoMA (the building, not the art). I went for the Alice Neil exhibit and the curator really thought of everything - how high to paint the faux ceiling, what paintings to place by the entrance, etc. Good variety of different styles - impressionist landscapes to surrealist portraits. The back patio area would be a great place to have a coffee and a pastry.

Thus museum has a great collection of American artists' paintings and sculptures. There are historical motifs through modern art, and collections from the Pacific Islands, Africa, and a good representation of Indigenous American pieces. In addition, we were lucky to see the traveling exhibit of the official Obama portraits. These were exceptional and well worth seeing. The museum cafe has a great selection of well-prepared food to eat, and is reasonably priced.

Wow! What a wonderful experience. Took my family to view The Obama portraits. Truly inspiring. So impressed, bought a membership for my daughter as a birthday gift. Used membership to visit Ramses the Great & the Gold of the Pharaohs exhibit. The level of skills used to create these pieces is amazing. Will not disappoint.

Being from the Bay Area means this wasn’t my first time visiting. But I thought I’d review it anyway since it’s been a while since I visited. The surrounding area around the museum is beautiful and calm. There’s a cafe with outdoor seating and a good sized souvenir shop as well. The exhibit I visited was so crowded and I just wish there was a bit more space. Otherwise there’s an underground parking garage across the way and the Japanese tea garden is within walking distance.

There is always something new to see, to learn and to enjoy. I especially enjoy their Art to Bouquet exhibit, where fresh floral bouquets are created inspired by art works. It usually takes place in the beginning of June each year. I have been member for almost 7 years and I think I will continue to be a member.

Always a wonderful visit to the deYoung. The exhibits are wonderful and well curated. Recent visit was to the annual Bouquet to Art exhibit. Beautiful and fun to see the various interpretations of art pieces in flower for.!

Such a lovely place! My favorites were Gallery 5 and the one with lithographs as well as some of the glass art. It’s free for local residents on Saturdays which is great! Ideal to spend about a couple of hours.

Beautifully situated in the Golden Gate Park. Great modern architecture. Nice staff. You don’t feel observed like in other museums. Excellent exhibitions. Take the elevator in the administrative tower to the observation platform.

As a museum enthusiast residing in the Bay Area, I regularly visit the deYoung since I'm a member. The membership offers incredible value, saving a significant sum on admission, special exhibits, and even allowing me to bring a guest. I highly recommend membership. The museum's collection never fails to amaze me. Being inside the deYoung feels like stepping into a living masterpiece with stunning paintings, photography and sculptures adorned. Moreover, the garden cafe is a tranquil spot to enjoy some lunch, wine, or dessert. The well-maintained grounds add to the beauty of the experience. You don’t have to buy admission to visit the cafe. It’s on the outside of the museum and well worth a stop.
