A must-visit for anyone who is an aficionado for central European art, particularly French. First off, if you're a resident of the Bay, you have free admission on Saturdays, so if you're looking for a tasteful after-lunch activity, this is a wonderful choice. Parking directly in front of the museum is rather limited, but just go a bit further in and down a short hill to find more roadside parking. If you happen to be an Impressionist or Monet fan, this is a must visit, as they house one of his water lilies works. They also feature side-exhibits that rotate depending on whatever the focus of the month is. At the time I visited, there was an exhibit featuring England's attempt at imitating porcelain.

Went for the Guo Pei exhibit and it was wonderful! Even if you don't spring for the exhibit the curator placed individual pieces throughout the existing collections and that alone was very cool in seeing how they integrated these exquisite gowns into so many different styles/time periods. The gardens and dining area are also really pretty just be sure to get to them early because things close (the kitchen, then the drinks)1-2+ hours before the museum itself closes and it's such a wonderful area to relax and enjoy. Great vista for photos too as evident by the throngs of folks there to take prom and wedding photos 💓 worth the trip and I believe they still do joint memberships if you join the de young plus reciprocity to other museums

This is one of excellent museum that you can visit for free on the first Tuesday of every month. It is a great place where European historical works are displayed, sculptures in front of the antique building museum and well-organized lawns, and you can enjoy Rodin's works very intensely, and many works by famous artists are on display. I recommend you to visit.

Have been to three spectacular exhibits of here in the past year. The docents go through years of training and, as a result, provide excellent tours and can answer almost any question lobbed their way. My only complaint is that the museum allows the exhibits to become PACKED. I wonder if they should consider timed entry for the special exhibits that draw so many people. The cafe is good but has a small menu so check it out first to see if there is something you want.

I went to the museum and got free admission because it was the first Tuesday of the month. I loved the exhibition they had on, a lot of different art from different parts of Europe. There are so many rooms to see, it is beautiful and worth visiting. I really enjoyed my time there. I will return once I am back in the city.

I had an absolutely fantastic visit to the Legion of Honor! This place is truly amazing, from the stunning architecture to the outstanding art exhibitions. What made my visit even more special was the organ concert at the end – it was the perfect grand finale to an already incredible experience. I highly recommend this museum to anyone looking for a memorable day filled with art, culture, and music. It's a definite 5-star experience!

We viewed the Tudor exhibit. Such a rich history on Henry the Vlll' lineage. Loved how each artist tells a story using the elements of art and principles of design in the elegant paintings. The monumental sizes of historical books is breath taking. The tapestries cover most of the walls from top to bottom, each telling historical events. I will go back soon

A very nice museum situated on stunningly beautiful grounds. Each time period is represented by a small number of works. The Rodin collection is very impressive and takes up several rooms. The entire museum can be seen in a couple of hours.

The Legion of Honor houses a fine collection that has something for everyone. I felt like the painting selections were just right to convey the changes of the major artistic schools of though throughout time. Additionally, the hall of antiquities was an added bonus. Though one of the highlights was the museum's bookstore. Their selection of works covered everything in their collection and more. I was pleased to find excellent academic works on a range of topics and the staff were friendly and helpful.

I always enjoy visiting the Legion. The architecture is stunning, both inside and out. The views from the parking lot alone are worth the visit, but I digress. Front staff is stoic but helpful. Security and staff within the museum are wonderful, engaging and generally nice people. Every special exhibit I have seen at the Legion has been well organized, well staffed and artwork is well placed so as not to crowd the viewers. The gift shops at the end of the exhibit are always filled with beautiful objects but cater to the 1%. I usually just get a postcard. I generally visit during the week to avoid crowds and brides getting their photos taken. If I was smarter when I was a young girl getting married I would have absolutely gotten my photo taken there!

Went for the Guo Pei exhibit. So amazing! Gorgeously presented work. I normally burnt out after an hour at a museum but this one was very engaging. Her work is incredible. The pictures don't do it justice.

Highly recommend! Guo Pei exhibit is a must see. Everything is perfectly conserved and there’s a lot of attention to the layout of the museum. Amazing views perfect for your special occasion photos like prom and wedding. You can see the Golden Gate Bridge from the entrance. The museum is worth the visit.

Well put together museum - the "right scale" for a great collection of exhibits but not overwhelming. Really enjoyed the Rodin, porcelain, Dutch & Flemish, and Impressionist galleries. Well conceived progression of eras of art history, coupled with brief summaries of cultural, economic & political context, made understanding and interpreting the work in each exhibit hall easy. Shout out to the special exhibit of commissioned work by Michelle Erickson ("Wild Porcelain"). When contrasted with the English pieces from which she drew her inspiration, her work blends in modern edginess and current-day relevance, which made for interesting viewing. The architecture of the museum itself, not to mention the beautiful setting, add to the collection to make this an outstanding, iconic San Francisco landmark. We used the "free 2st Saturday" for Bay Area residents and visited for free.

Beautiful museum. Each room definitely has its own atmosphere, and the full museum is actually quite large! More than I expected. The outside grounds seems nice too, though I didn't explore as much because it was raining hard when I went. They have free locals day, which is great but also made it terribly crowded and loud. I'd recommend going on a sunny weekday with ample time to walk around.

I was on a tour with Best Tours of Fresno to see the Tudor Exhibit. What a treat it was! Beautiful Art work & artifacts dating from the 1400's to the 1600's. The Museum itself was a wonderful building that opened in 1924 in Lincoln Park. It has European paintings, sculptures & decorative arts. It definitely worth the trip. There is also a Cafe in the building. I had a Chinese Chicken Salad which was very good but a little pricey. I ate outdoors in a beautiful courtyard with attentive wait staff. All in all, it was a most stupendous day!

Legion of Honor is such a beautiful gallery and building with views of the surrounding grounds, golf course, the bay and the bridge. We purchased tickets to see the Guo Pei exhibition, but honestly the free gallery section was just as impressive. Definitely recommend visiting if you have the chance.

The overall paintings are from 15 to 19 century and Rodin collection is the most famous one. We took around 90 minutes for admiring all artworks then walked around the architecture and looked out the Golden Gate Bridge. Had a good time in the weekend afternoon. The Cafe service time is 11:00-14:30

A one of a kind exhibit of designer Guo Pei . A lovely small museum with a good permanent collection. Lived how many of Guo's pieces were wittily stage in the permanent rooms. A good venue. A special shout out to the Holocaust memorial out in front of the building. That was moving and effectively startling

A decent small art museum located near the lands end area of San francisco. I would only recommend going on saturdays, for their Free Saturdays which allows all residents of Bay area counties to enter for free. My only complaint, is really about the staff: there are definitely some overzealous security guards, and the front desk staff is pretty hostile if you don't get the right person.

Small for a major museum. Much smaller than its affiliate (the de Young). Great art, especially from Rodin. Amazing park, though. We enjoyed the outside park much more than the museum with the sensational views of the golden gate bridge and the pacific ocean.

Beautiful space. Very calm and with gorgeous art work. Hidden gem for tourist and locals. I have been to the Monet and the Tudors exhibitions and both were outstanding. Their permanent collection is remarkable too with many pieces from Monet (my favorite), including a piece of water lilies.

One of the best museums in SF, and the views of the golden gate bridge and nearby walking trails are beyond beautiful. The museum features mostly classic art up to the impressionists, with exceptional special exhibits. A must-see in SF.

The Legion is a great place to visit in SF. The museum has rooms that are expertly curated to match certain time periods and are amazing. The museum has an extensive amount of Rodin's works as well. The museum has a focus on European art movements such as Impressionist, Rococo, and Baroque. The Tudor tapesteries are exquiste. Outside, the grounds have a nice view of the Golden Gate Bridge. If you buy a ticket to the Legion you also get free admission to De Young which is a nice perk. The museum is easy to walk around and took about 2 1/2 hours to traverse.

Had a great time. The museum is breathtaking. Lots of cool smaller exhibits in rooms down stairs. And a huge collection of the master's and Rodan upstairs. They also have concerts in the basement. We went to the pastel's exhibit, which was a special. It was nice to see lots of paintings by women and people of California. The cafe is nice but be prepared to pay for museum prices for food. It is a small menu so eat before you get there. You are required to show proof of vaccination to eat there.

This is a spot I had been wanting to visit for awhile now! So glad I did! The outside is beautiful marble with bronze statues adorning a magnificent entrance arch! Then Rodin's the Thinker just staring at you as you enter the Piazza! That's just the outside haha! I came for the Tutors Exhibit but stayed and checked out the entire collection! I really enjoyed the Ronin rooms and making my way back to the Monets! Stunning building as well with arches, columns and domes abound!

My kids and I went to Legion of Honor on July 4th holiday this year. It was free general admission on that day because San Francisco offers the first Tuesday of every month. Beautiful art museum with lots of amazing fine arts. We walked from lands ends outlook to Legion of Honor, great hike and amazing views of Golden Gate Bridge.

This museum is a treasure. We have loved coming here over the years and always enjoy the view from the front parking lot. This time we saw the Guo Pei exhibition; fabulous and enchanting! The curators from the Legion distributed the pieces throughout the museum so people who didn’t pay to get into the special exhibit were able to see some of the magical ensembles.

SARGENT & SPAIN special exhibition is very popular. Attracted a large crowd. Sargent’s diverse background is captured in this exhibition. He painted in a variety of genres not usually seen in collections of his work. All the paintings in this exhibition were done during his time in Spain, a country where he visited and lived intermittently over several decades. His focus on different architectural styles was also captured in several paintings.

  • 5/5 Krishin A. 11 months ago on Google
Museum architecture as over-the-top grand national monument , reminding me of pep talks and speeches generals give before declaring a War; the interior though is more intimate; today, I went to final day of Spain and Sargent, my first exhibit at this museum as SF newbie. Sargent is etched in our mind through the paintings , “ The Daughters of Edward Boit” and “ Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose “ ; but this exhibit give us a wider view , away for American portraitist, towards a man who seeks to find his place in the world of Spain. But you wonder : you can take the man out of America but can you take America out of the man; what I mean is : will he make attempts to expand beyond portraiture ? The best works are the dancers because portraiture has always been his strength. The photos here a mini exhibit if you missed the show.

I always enjoy my visits to this museum. Much of the artwork in the galleries are from UK & France. There is a lot of variety and I seem to notice something new every time I visit. This is one of my favorite places to visit in the Bay. I always bring friends to see this place when they come from out of town to visit California. There is something very mystical about The Legion of Honor. I also recommend that you attend the pipe organ concert. There are very few of these in the world and it is a very unique experience.

Beautiful museum home to sculptures, furniture and paintings - both modern and classical art. Rodin’s sculptures are heavily featured throughout including arguably his most famous piece “the thinker” on prominent display as soon as you walk through the gates. My only criticism is that it the special exhibits downstairs are not clearly marked as needing additional tickets to enter, nor was it mentioned when I entered the museum. The grounds around the museum are breathtaking.

This is a stunning museum with beautiful architecture inside and out. We paid extra to see the Early Rubens exhibit and we were glad we did. The paintings are incredible! And huge! Throughout the rest of the museum, there is a lot of beautiful art all very thoughtfully displayed. We saw some Monet, Rodin, Cézanne, and so many other famous artists. They have a lovely cafe with really good food. It's a bit pricey ($18 for sandwiches), but at least it was tasty and we didn't have to leave.

Such a beautiful building, housing great pieces of artwork. Not just paintings, I came to find out, but, for example, a tea service once belonging to royalty...Grand Duchess Victoria Melita, aka "Ducky", once married to Empress Alexandra's brother, Ernst, who then married a cousin of the Tsar. Other pieces included objects made by Fabergé!! (Was extremely excited to see them. Not one of the famous eggs, unfortunately, but still delightful pieces!) The special exhibition was celebrating the works of James Tissot. His name didn't sound familiar, but once I was viewing his portraits, recognition came immediately, solely because Oxford World Classics used some of these portraits on the covers of Anthony Trollope's Palliser series; he is a favorite author of mine. Seeing more of James Tissot's work, I've found a new favorite artist. A delightful excursion all round!

I love museums and though this one was small, it's still a beautiful building that you have to see if you love architecture. It's also in a picturesque location where you can get a clear view of the golden gate bridge as long as its not too foggy. If you need a break from the crowds in the city, come check this place out, especially on a weekday. Parking is free here too, if you can find a spot.

Beautiful museum in a beautiful part of San Francisco. The museum itself is relatively small but with great prices from mostly European painters. Initially built as a copy of the museum in Paris, to house the collection of Rodin sculptures - are there are quite a few here. There was an organ performance when we visited and SF residents get free entrance every Saturday - being proof of address and ID. Save time to walk around the surrounding area afterwards!
