Located at 30 Bank st and Wellington you will find the Bank of Canada Museum. This museum use to be on the ground floor of the Bank of Canada However it was relocated as part of Canada's 150th year celebrations into a separate underground building covered by modern trianglar structures. The museum is free, but closed now because of covid. There are many interactive educational displays that would be of interest to many. This includes the history of Canadian currency, Upper and Lower Canada provincial and large company (like the Hudson Bay Company) financial notes. There is also information about the purpose and function of the Bank of Canada, its monetary policys and how it plays a vital role in Canada's economy. The museum is very family oriented and is a nice spot for tourists to see when visting the parliament buildings and the downtown core of Ottawa. If you like my reviews, photos or videos please give them a thumbs up. Or follow me for more local guide information.

The challenge has been met! Our two teenage daughters enjoyed it very much, although one of them was not at all drawn to the subject at first. A good overview without going into details. It is much more than ancient coins. Very interactive. We'll keep the interest until then. Allow 2 hours. We duly did the tour in 1h30 and it was a little tight. Since it's free and a stone's throw from the parliament, why not at least give it a try? Note that there may be confusion with visits to the Royal Canadian Mint, which we did not have time to visit and compare.

This museum is a unique place for people with an interest in money and how it has changed throughout the years. The major focus is on the Canadian economy and the evolution of money, coins and banknotes, from the later years of the 19th century to modern times. The place is truly enjoyable and the admission is free.

This is a very digital and pleasant museum - extremely friendly staff. It's a smaller museum - takes an hour or less - so it's a nice stop during your day downtown. The entrance is in one of the triangles on bank street. It has a lot of digital interaction with Avatar bracelets - I wish there was more history, factoids and nuggets of information on the cards/signs in the museum. Great for kids - stroller friendly - even has a kids scavenger hunt and a coloring spot. Worth a stop!

You can not beat this museum! It is free and located right downtown almost across from parliament. Great interactive exhibits as well as displays of money from around the world. It was fun trying to find the Finnish and Filipino money.

Great museum to visit. It's informative, fun and interactive. I was impressed by the stone at the entrance. And by a Sumerian tablet from 5000+ BC! Great collection of artifacts. I've learnt a lot. It's a very cool place. Not giving 5 stars as the loud game music took away from the experience.

It was free entry to the museum. Lots of interactive display which is good for kids and adults. The Bank of Canada Museum, located in Ottawa, offers an educational and interactive experience that explores the history and functions of the central bank of Canada. The museum offers a range of exhibits that cover various aspects of the Bank of Canada's work. These exhibits may include displays on the history of money, the design and production of banknotes, the importance of monetary stability, and the role of the bank in promoting a safe and sound financial system.

Not a big museum, but it has enough things to show and tell. Love how the digital wrest bands allow each person to interact with different exhibits. Kids enjoyed all the fun interactions while learning things about currency and how money works. The best part is it's FREE!!!

One thing the Canadians are really really good at, is making information accessible and interesting to all ages. Today, we visited the bank museum. Sounds boring, right? The central bank of Canada is inviting everyone to come (for free!) and learn about the Canadian economy, finance and currency. This museum is a state of the art facility with super high-tech exhibits. Even the kids were eager to learn about the 2% target inflation rate. They have a personalized experience in your preferred language, videos, interactive games, guided tour, and great view of the history of currencies. We even got to design a bill with our face on it! With this nice execution, everyone would love to learn. Just wow.

The kids loved this place. And, this place is free! They have a creative/coloring area for kids at the entrance. And there is an area where you could create an avatar for yourself. This digital avatar gets uploaded into a wearable tag that they give you when you begin the tour. There are 7 rooms or themed display areas. In each area, you could tap your tag and your avatar shows up. The kids loved this part. Then the avatars interact with you on the displays. In one of the interactive displays, we are given an amount of money (income) and we are asked to distribute the money to various things (expenses). In the end, based on your province, you will be shown how the average is and how we spent the money. There are a lots of tips and statistics along the way. Kids learned a lot. There are video games as well.

Kids love it! So high tech, interactive, and engaging. Lots to learn and see! Kids love making their own avatars, using the wristbands, making their own banknotes, and doing the scavenger hunts. They are learning and playing which is a perfect mix! Highly recommend!

Great place to learn more about money but before you ask, no they don't give out samples! Talk about a discrepancy in supply and demand.

There is no parking in the compound. We had to park in a nearby underground parking lot, which was inconvenient and almost 15min walking distance. Entry to the museum is free, it is stroller friendly. You will need atleast 2-3hours to explore completely without rush. Staff are friendly. There are many interactive platforms which would be great for economic enthusiasts. Displays were interesting.

An interesting museum. Not so big but worth to spend a few hours to understand more about Canadian money. A good place for kids to do a little craft, quiet and relax place. Only that parking is always a problem in Ottawa downtown, has to plan a nearest parking garage which was a few block away to park before you can access the museum.

When I first came across this place, I thought it would be a somewhat interesting way to waste some time. I was so wrong, as it was an absolutely amazing experience. I'm surprised that they don't charge any money for the amazing experience they provide. It's great for kids and adults alike, as they distribute electronic wristbands that control different games and machines around the museum. All of the exhibits are highly intriguing, and it's one of the best and most underrated museums in Canada. 5+ Stars!

Hands down this is the best museum in Ottawa. Really well developed programming and really no astroturfing of political nonsense that is common in the other big galleries. Some of the exhibits are built around essential lessons for money and the economy - they should be taught in every school across the country and not reserved just for Ottawa.

Lovely museum to check out! For a free museum, there is plenty to learn. The Bank of Canada Museum is great for kids as there are many interactive displays and activities, and beautiful lights. All ages can learn about the history of currency, and there are some amazing historic artifacts of currency. The location is great as well, in close proximity to Parliament Hill (under a 5 minute walk), and is right around the corner from Parliament Station for Line 1. With great activities, accessibility, and plenty to learn — all for free — the Bank of Canada museum is definitely recommended for visitors of Ottawa (and locals!)

Entrance is free. Museum basically has fun interactive activities teaching kids and youth about managing money and how interest rates impact the economy. They also explain how bank of canada operates and about its reserves. They have also displayed different currencies. I would recommend to visit the museum with fresh mind so you are retaining the information you are reading or hearing. It can take up to 1.5 hour for the tour (if you are actually reading everything)

It will take about 30-40 minutes for the whole thing and it’s a pretty interesting interactive experience. It would be a great experience to bring kids and it’s FREE ADMISSION. 4 stars because the gift shop was mid LOL.

Nice little museum at a super convenient location, walkable from the parliament building. We loved our visit. My kids enjoyed learning more about money and they had a play station setup which was thoroughly enjoyed by my toddler too. The staff is so sweet and welcoming, really enjoyed talking with them as well. We'll definitely stop by here from time to time whenever we're visiting downtown.

Great place to visit with children and teenagers. They can grasp the actual history of money and how it all began. The museums has an extensive collection of archeological artifacts to take you through the entire journey. The explanation they offer is very interesting and simple. They all have a simulator at the end where you can actual see how your world activities contribute to the world economy. I found the experience, especially, wonderful. It a great way to get children thinking 🤔. It’s a great way to teach children the impact of finance, its significance in the world. Amazing learning place !!!!

Not a big museum but much more interesting than what I expected. There was a German 50,000 Marks note from Reichs Bank equal to 2.5 USD in 1923!!! Or a cash register made by NCR. NCR makes ATM machines, self checkout, … these days. Couldn’t spend enough time there to read about all items. Will visit it again. Added a few photos.

Nice clean and modern space and exhibits. I only had a couple of hours this time so I wasn't able to read every description, but looking at the different currencies and the history of what was currency in the past was illuminating. One of the the things that made my visit really delightful was how cheerful and engaging the staff members were. It was a joy to visit with them and the museum today.

A real surprise to enter the museum, they make a tremendous effort to give an interactive, personalized and modern approach to a subject that is regularly shown in a monitonous way, however this is something different, they have managed to make it entertaining and fun, since it began until it ends, it all starts with your bracelet and your avatar, until the creation of your own paper money, they are truly geniuses. They link that you learn while they entertain you.

I liked the games and other fun activities, I still think there should be more plaques to read. I found it difficult to find the item I wanted to read about through the smart screen system since there are so many items.

I went with a group of friends on May 22nd. The staff members are welcoming and they have an impressive level of knowledge. You can tell that they enjoy teaching. Towards the end of our tour, a staff member approached us. He invited us to a table that has physical money from different historical periods. He had some artifacts on hand that he let us hold. He was asking us engaging questions about how these different trading methods made sense in those time periods. He guided us to the correct answers without simply reciting a bunch of facts. He handed us a heavy dark green tablet with some engravings on it. He asked us what it could be made out of and why it would be valuable as a method of payment. The answer was surprising. A memorable learning experience for all ages.

We had a great time at this museum! We had shown up one hour before closing and didn't get to see everything. My kids begged to go back and see the rest. It is not a large museum, but they have lots to see and learn about. There are fun, interactive media stations to help engage the kids in some of the dryer topics. I found it very well done. The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly.

  • 4/5 Simon D. 4 months ago on Google • 8 reviews
Good, well-curated museum, catering for adults and children very well without taking away from the other. A good collection and worth seeing, especially as it is free to visit. The labelling system is a but cumbersome, as one has to look up items on separate screens, and, while this allows for more information to be communicated, and the item to be seen up-close, it means that the viewer does not know what the item is that he is looking at, without taking down the code and looking it up on a separate computer. The shop could do with more variety. Good and pleasant staff.
