Absolutely insanely amazing... Literally filled with wonders. The Mia is huge and has an INCREDIBLE amount of wonderful art. I was there 3 hours and didn't even get through one floor. I think I spent two hours just in the Asia exhibits and I didn't even see everything in there. Time flies by when there's so much to get immersed in. I think it would take me days to truly appreciate all of the art. If you like to sketch, definitely bring your materials! I had a blast :D And Mia is completely free!!! (Although everyone should make a donation to this wonderful place). I would put this at the top of the to-do list when in the Twin Cities. Hopefully I'm back in Minneapolis soon so I can designate a few full days to the Mia:) The facilities were very clean and there is plenty of room to social distance even with a good amount of people visiting (I was there on a Wednesday 11am-2pm). Lovely staff as well and they do have a self-service coat check with lockers. As of 4/27/22, masks are optional although many guests still masking when I was there:) Very accessible by bus too!

Blessing that this museum is free entry (except for special exhibitions) and delivers a high quality experience nonetheless. Some really cool exhibits across European, Asian, African and American art that can take up multiple days to fully explore. Worth a visit while you’re in Minneapolis!

Incredible, huge, three-story, free art museum with ongoing exhibits as well as various rotating and traveling special exhibits that have a fee (however, those exhibits usually offer free days as well). I have spent many hours over many days over many years and yet I STILL haven't seen everything even in the ongoing exhibits. You should make a reservation for tickets for special events but usually you can walk-in and still get a ticket, even for those. They have a fun, free Family Day event the second weekend of every month with fun activities and a take-home tote. You can also get a free or paid membership (different levels have different benefits). Definitely donate if you can as well, to help support the museum. There is a gift shop as well as a couple restaurants on site. They offer a free coat check and self-service lockers, which is great for winter when you don't want to lug your coat around. The museum is located on the bus route and there is free on-street and some paid parking lots available. Sometimes they offer free shuttles as well. The museum is accessible with ramps and elevators and offer free wheelchairs for use (which was so helpful when I was there while on crutches). We love the fun, family-friendly Rock the Cradle event they host with the Children's Theatre Company in March and the beautiful Art in Bloom event in the spring.

It’s been years since I’ve been to the art museum. And having worked and lived abroad in China for more than 10 years, I was curious to revisit the Chinese collection in the Asia exhibition hall. My goodness! I spent half a day and didn’t even get see everything. Need not to mention the other halls in the entire museum. 3 floors worth of pieces from all over the world. You will find something that will excite you. Seriously, I could spend days here. Anyway, admission is free but a donation is highly recommended. There is paid parking next door but if you come early, there’s free street parking. Without a doubt, I shall have to visit again!

What a fun day date! 🖼️ My husband surprised me and brought me to the MIA for some adult time without our babies... Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed taking in the works of art spanning all the way back 25bce with my Romeo... I highly recommend! ✨

This completely FREE museum offers so much for the visitors to see and learn that one visit is simply not enough! I visited for the first time today on a Wednesday, and I loved every minute of my visit. I spent most of my time perusing arts from Europe and America between 1600s to modern times on the third floor. I saw one painting from Monet's later years and it was interesting to see the transformation of his artistic style. The second floor displays artifacts, paintings and other artworks from various parts of the world. A cafe and a gift shop can be found on the main floor. I will for sure return!

Amazing museum with tons space to wander. Art from all over the world and through the centuries. Got lost a few times and had to back track a bit. They are open till 9 some nights which is unusual for a museum and I wholeheartedly approve. Go wander and have fun!! Best of all it’s free!

Amazing Museum. Love the interactive rooms and the variety of art pieces from around the world. They’re amazing about Covid-19 precautions and so be sure to bring your vaccination card or proof of vaccination and be kind to those who are working their asking for them. Food/Cafe is up and running there. Staff that work there were amazing and helpful. And IT IS OPEN UNTIL 9PM. Can we all just appreciate that? 9 PM!! Good job MIA.

Even if there were a reasonable entry fee I'd have given this museum five stars. The fact that it was free was icing on the cake. Lots of exhibits from various periods and geographies made for an excellent family friendly cultural experience.

I have always loved the MIA since I was a small child. It's a place for all-ages. It has new galleries pretty frequently. There is a nice sensory-friendly area on the first floor for young children and families. It's a bit more quiet and less brightly lit. There are plenty of seats, bathrooms, and fun things to touch and / or play with; i.e., a chessboard, books, and the wall is textured. My favorite part of the whole trip was visiting the area of photographs entitled: The last safe abortion. The importance of Roe V Wade is highlighted in this piece, which recognizes and honors abortion work in this large photographic body of work from the Midwest. The visual storytelling of this piece shows people answering phones, holding training sessions, scheduling appointments, and handling logistics. Another fun exhibit is The Staff Art Show. I enjoyed the diverse variety of artwork in its different forms in this area. From everything to a mirror, to zines, and objects that the artist's children have discarded, there is something for everyone. The newest exhibit is In Our Hands Native Photography 1890 to now. The exhibit is visually attractive, and worth exploring. It was a bit crowded, because it's newer, but it was enjoyable.

Amazing experience, a large museum with a amazing array of art! There’s something for everyone, but art lovers will especially enjoy it. Another plus is that it’s completely free, only fee you might have to pay is for parking.

Open again, with strict social distancing with masks and a limit of 150 people, including staff inside at one time. Very good experience, it is wonderful being in such a peaceful setting away from home. Nothing else compares, millions of dollars worth of art to view for free. And an amazing building.

What a gem in the heart of Minneapolis. This art institute is great for families. There is plenty of room and art for everyone. They even display local children’s artwork. They offer a family center just for kids and a cafe with goodies! Plus, it’s FREE!! Check our calendar for kids events.

MIA is a beautiful museum that is free to the public. It has a parking ramp for easy parking ($7 for the first two hours and an additional $1/hr after the initial two hrs) if you don't want the hassle of finding street parking. The building is shared with Children's Theater, which is a great place to catch a show if you have young ones. MIA has multiple floors to explore (stairs and elevators to choose from) with multiple restrooms (that are clean) on each floor for convenience. They also have a little cafe with tables and a little shop on the first floor. In my opinion, this museum is far superior in content than The Walker.

Okay. First off the place is free. Second it is full of beautiful art for anyone and everyone. There are some paid parking lots and even a valet on occasion although maybe that's just for events. Usually if you're only going to be there a couple hours you can find parking on the street nearby. If you need a bathroom they have some right inside after passing the info desk. Those ones do get pretty busy so I suggest going up the ramp to the left and through the hallway to some bigger bathrooms that are less frequently used. There's a gift shop where you can find all sorts of trinkets, cool pins, buttons, stickers, and books. You should plan on spending at least a couple hours here. There are multiple floors with all sorts of different arts and mediums.

This was a neat museum and a nice way to spend a few hours, especially that it was free. The galleries are well put together with enough information about the pieces to learn about them. The hidden office of the museum curator that disappeared was super wild.

An absolutely amazing art museum and a must see of Minneapolis. I visited on a Sunday morning which had significantly less crowds than I was expecting. Entry was quick and easy, the entrance was for free (which I’m not sure if it’s a recurring thing). It was very easy to navigate around the museum due to the signage and provided maps. I especially like that there is a list of must sees on the back of the map for those who only have a short amount of time to visit like I did. The layout is easy to navigate and separated in distinct periods that makes sense, nothing detracts from the pieces themselves, and it's overall an amazing experience. I can't wait to revisit with plenty of time to thoroughly explore all the exhibits.

What I love about this free museum is it never seems busy, just because there is so much to explore and people spread out. There's so much more there than just typical paintings on the wall. You have Period Rooms start up to immerse you into the culture and settings that created those pieces. There is furniture and important functional and artistic designs to lamps and kitchen gadgets even. The arrangement by region is wonderful and let's you step through worlds. Definitely a spot to both come with others or alone.

It was my first time. I was very impressed. Very very very large building. Three Floors. I was there 3 hours and I didn't even see everything. They have one or two sections where it cost money to get in but those are like for specialty exhibits like Van Gogh and they had some Japanese textiles thing that was like 20 bucks to get in. They have a coffee shop and a gift store on the first floor. All the art was really interesting. I highly recommend reading the plaques, some really funny stuff. I should have taken more photos. I can't wait to go back. In the African art section on the first floor, if you read the plaques it's almost comical they tell stories of how they have no idea where the art came from or who made it and it was donated by some white guy. I think an effort should be made to return some of that stuff, especially stuff within the last century.for example there was several spiritual artifacts that were so sacred they should be returned. They have a really great Mediterranean section as well, one thing was an urn. That should be returned and put in an intentional resting place that isn't to be gawked at by tourists.

Such a great collection! What a welcoming place for tourists, the community and world. Experiencing the building's architecture is worth a visit alone. The admission was free! How fortunate we are to have not only these works to enjoy, but that they're incorporated into the preservation of historic architecture. It's so accessible and easily located.

FREE ENTRY. Attended the art in bloom event April '23. Wonderful place to see soo many varieties of art including art from the most well known artists, as well as lots of new artists represented. Art in bloom pairs floral interpretations with other pieces on display. Street parking is limited so your best bet is to park in the ramp that's very close by. Quite a lot of events take place throughout the year so something for everyone. Check this one out!

I have lived in a Minneapolis suburb for a lot of my life but have never visited. I was driving right past on a weekday after a meeting had ended sooner than expected, there was a parking spot right in front, and so I decided to take a quick tour. Beautiful museum with a number of really interesting pieces. Easily worth a visit and worth more than the little time I afforded it.

This is a must see museum for an avid or fledging art lover. Took 3 hours to tour the 3 floors of pieces but could've spent longer. The Asian pieces alone are some of the best on U.S. soil. The inclusion of a real Japanese gate that stands 10ft and you can walk through it, was my son's favorite. Almost every period of history is covered in their vast collection of paintings and pottery.

What a great free public Art Museum. Lots of variety from many different parts of the world and many different ages. I especially enjoyed the French impressionists or those who copied the French impressionists. There is definitely something for everyone in this museum. A wonder art museum—certainly the best in Minnesota. The layout can be a bit confusing, but there’s something fun and exciting about going from a room full of impressionist masterpieces to one with anarchist comic strips. There’s a lovely little cafe and store. I strongly recommend setting aside an entire day to explore this museum.

Outstanding. And it's free! Gallery upon gallery of world class art. Really enjoyed the immersive exhibits of household rooms, especially the one in which the light and sounds change to give a sense of daily life. The special exhibit on Japanese cloth and clothing was magnificent, and well worth the very small ticket price of 10 CAD.

Amazing place and so much amazing art to see. If anyone plans on going make it an all day trip. My family and I were there 3 hours and didn't get to see everything cause we ran out of time. From what I understand it's free to enter, but have to pay for special events, it's worth it. We went to see the Chinese Ritual Bronzes.

We love the MIA both as Minneapolis residents who love to come here for fun and with visitors! We also adore this space as a wedding photo & video duo — it makes for such an incredible and unique wedding venue! The grandness of the spaces as well as the unique displays allows couples to create a bold and memorable experience completely tailored to them. There’s also soooo many spaces for photos and we adore that!! All in all 10/10 both as a fun family activity and as a great event venue.

Spent a day at MIA and was very impressed by the beautiful art on display. Works by many masters are on display as well as regional artists. Too much to see for a one day visit. Will definitely be back to finish our exploration. We went on a Saturday and we never felt rushed or crowded. Entry was free, but we did pay to see the Latin America exhibition.

We visited the "In Our Hands" exhibit and it was so lovely. Thrilled to have been able to take in this stunning collection of Native art. The curation was top notch and gave us a wonderful spectrum of media, stories, and emotions. Grateful to have been able to spend time amongst these pieces!

This one of the best things to do for free in the Twin Cities. You could really probably spend 4+ hours here learning about all the different exhibits. Personally, I found the Buddhist, and Taoist art exhibits the most interesting.

I just got home from MIA after spending about 2.5 hours viewing the Asian and Native American wings. The ceramics, textiles, and many exhibitions of decor and designs of rooms from homes in Japan were all lovely. The variety of the artists was amazing. The time span was vast. The Native American artist I enjoyed the most was Jim Denomie. The exhibition is colorful in every way. He compressed the history of the last 60 years into one large canvas. He did this with bravado, regret and political savvy. He gave special emphasis to the history of his own people. Enjoy and take your time-you might miss something!

A fantastic collection of artwork and historical artifacts. Best way to enjoy the museum is in multiple trips, as the place is huge! Quiet, relaxing, and relatively kid friendly. The staff are doing their best during this pandemic, and I know that it’s stressful with how many people they probably get who don’t follow rules/state mandates. Regardless, we had some questions about certain pieces, and the staff were quite rude and reluctant to talk with us. It was a little jarring. Other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience!

Great collections from all over the world and throughout history. So much to see! Be sure to allow for a lot of time to see everything, though I’d recommend taking a couple days to appreciate everything without sensory overload (which isn’t a bad thing). If you want a snack the cafe has great sandwiches. The MIA is another gem of the city!

Really big collection , some of very big name painters. I wish they had a structure to follow though. We saw some sections very intensely and skimmed through others and took about 3.5 hours for about 80% of the museum. Dont miss the 4000year old pottery on the top floor on the right (starting at the top near the stair above the cafe) ; the big chinese - budhist era doorway - you cant miss it ; the tea rooms from china and japan ; the EU'ean modern art collections , the jewerlery box with inlaid gems ; well preserved mosaics!!

My daughter and I came her to view the art and spend time together just her and I. I am in construction and have been working a ton and this was such a lovely visit for her and I to just take in all the beauty and history and being as it is currently appointment only it was peaceful and quiet. It was not over crowded and we did not have to be shoulder to shoulder with others. This place is amazing and my 11 year old daughter and I love to visit. If you have never been before, don't miss out on the Minneapolis Downtown Skyline views from the second floor. This was my daughter's father's favorite place in the whole museum and her and I sat for a bit thinking of him and taking in the view. There is art from many periods and all styles and our favorite is all of the Asian art. It's a museum. It's beautiful. The architecture alone is very impressive. If you appreciate this sort of thing you cannot bypass the MIA.

I love world history and WOW there is history there. There was so much to see that I have to go back again just to see the rest. Plus they rotate items so it's always a bit different

(Translated by Google) Awesome place. Our kids do not have enough interactivity, but our schoolchildren have found a lot of interesting things for themselves here. It is impossible to absorb all the information presented in the museum at one time, we will definitely come here again. (Original) Потрясающее место. Нашим малышам не хватает интерактива, но наши школьники нашли здесь много интересного для себя. Невозможно за один раз впитать в себя всю информацию представленную в музее, обязательно придём сюда ещё раз.

Never fails to please. I recommend going alone. It's a really cool experience to just appreciate the incredible art/history without any distractions

If you're looking for a non-crowded, very socially distant, and 100% mask compliant place to get out of the house I can't recommend the MIA enough. Free self-serve coat check. Super friendly and distant staff. Even when sold out it's practically empty. Warm. Peaceful. Exactly what my family needed. Our toddler loves it there.

As always it was an amazing experience. Tons of amazing art and a great friendly staff. Definitely recommend making your way here, also the whole experience is free!

Finely curated and hosted by a super friendly staff. Cannot say enough about their collection here, the chinese art history section is so beautiful I find it hard to get past it at times. They let me sit and sketch without interruption, and there is a nice coffee shop right at the entrance. Give a donation, this is the sort of place that deserves it.

Free on Sundays. Great place to take a trip too! Varied selection, rotating collections, friendly staff. Can't wait to visit again.

Its an amazing place . You probably can't cover the whole place in one day . The Chinese antiquities caught my eyes the most . You do not need to pay any entry fee and can park in front of MIA or around the adjacent park .

Holy cow this place is awesome!! I spent about an hour and a half on just the 2nd floor alone and still didn't get through everything! So many cool areas and artifacts. Can't wait to get back to check out the 3rd floor next time!

We love MIA! We recently visited while waiting to see Annie at the Children's Theater and the exhibits were so cool! Can't wait to make another trip!

Here is a little cultural gem tucked into the heart of Minneapolis. It's filled with wonder and delight. Yes, there is often times a special exhibit that will cost you a small fee - otherwise, enjoy the rest for free. We have never had issues finding street parking close by. Chuck full of amazing art, in all forms. One of my favorite areas is the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit. I also love gazing out the upper story window at the downtown skyline with the description of all the buildings right there. Keep it simple. Bring the kids and gather some culture.

World class museum. We were limited on time (2 hrs) and never made it off the 3rd floor. Friendly guards, easy to follow map, nice gift shop and cafe. Free street parking. Will definitely return next time I'm in MN.

Awesome and somehow free museum. Don't confuse free with quality this is a high end extremely impressive museum. The pieces they have are amazing and span just about anything you can think of. The stand outs to me were the Asian sections with many items in incredible shape going back to the BCs. Prepare to be overwhelmed, I would just take in what you can. If I lived in Twin Cities the way I would approach this place since it is free, is to not try to get through in a day, instead tackle slowly one section. I found it easy to just walk by things but whenever I stopped to read the details on an item learned interesting detail and history and I'm some cases the one of a kind rarity. An example is the complete set of Chinese Zodiac 12" figurines which is 1 of only 2 complete sets in the world. Would definitely go back. If however you are looking for more of a current modern art experience (as opposed to historical but MIA does have many art pieces) you should go to The Walker Museum but that does cost some money.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art (or 'Mia') is amazing! The building itself is beautiful and contains pretty much all types of art - from ancient art to modern art - and EVERYTHING in between! There is usually a fee for special exhibits, but general admission to the museum is free, however, they certainly welcome donations and appreciate members. This museum is a treasure and shouldn't be missed!

One might not think “Minneapolis“ to be such a hotspot for art, but this is one of the best art museums I have been to in a long time. The amount of artwork is just staggering, beautifully displayed, well laid out, and very navigable. My daughter and I kept trying to leave because we were running out of time, but then kept getting distracted by more beautiful artwork that we just had to see. Give yourself an entire day in this gorgeous place, and have a little treat for yourself in the café. Highly highly recommend!

The artwork is beautiful and the museum features artwork across several time periods and across various cultures such as Asia, the America's, Native Americans, and Africa.

Free museum with tons of art. One daughter's favorite is the huge yellow glass sun hanging just inside the entrance. There's Asian, African, Egyptian, Native American, South American and European art -- paintings, sketches, statues, sculpture, photography, furniture, sarcophagus, tapestries, jewelry, silver, bronze, wood, stone and glass. My youngest daughter's favorite is Van Gogh's Olive Trees. My favorite is a painting that is so realistic that it looks like a photograph.

Have always been grateful for this free museum. glad they have dedicated more money and attention to native arts with their new curator and rethinking the story we see

  • 5/5 Igor P. 6 months ago on Google
One of the greatest museums in Minnesota. The admission is free, you pay only if you want to go to the special exhibitions (that change from time to time). Special attention o the historical exhibitions from Asia, Pacific Islands and Africa. Plan ahead to start the for at least 4 hours to see most of the things. The restrooms have changing stations. Some times it is difficult to find parking spots close to the main building

I've been to quite a few art museums, and I think this one is the most underrated one. Solid collection all the way around, including really good Native American art and Japanese art collections. It's also free, so anyone can enjoy it. If you're bored in the Twin Cities, this is one of the best places to visit to curb that boredom.

The amount of exhibits is unbelievable. It is hard to believe it is free. Multiple days needed to appreciate everything. We only had a short time and will be back for sure to read more about pieces. Ideally we'd take a couple of hours to read through just a portion of a floor. A tour is probably recommended if available. Totally recommend.

👍👍 Had a great experience at this stadium watching Rammstein. Security was efficient and friendly. Had some fried cheese curds that were the best I have ever had. Prices for concessions suck though. The concert it's self sounded great. However the music playing before the show could barely be heard....
