The variety and diversity of art on display in the Newark Museum makes it a very worthwhile place to visit. The museum is much larger than expected, and is subdivided into different art styles and periods. The staff are great and helpful. I would suggest putting aside a few hours to go through the entire thing, especially if you are a thorough art enthusiast. I will definitely be going back again once the other wings open up once more! FYI - cheaper to pay in cash for your admission!

Had an absolute blast spending an entire day here. All happened inadvertently when there was a small snowstorm. Easy access from EWR airport with a quick bus ride. So many exhibits and don’t forget to check out the attached buildings and the main building. The docents are super knowledgeable and the tour was fantastic. The planetarium was a ton of fun as well. Loved every minute of it and couldn’t imagine spending 5 hours at a museum before but with the bad weather outside, this was the perfect plane to take an in-depth look at every artifact and gallery.

The museum houses a coffee shop called PJ's and a gift shop. They also have coat check. The staff are very friendly and kind. The space is nice to spend an afternoon, but I would skip the coffee shop.

Went for child’s birthday party. I really enjoyed the thoughtfulness of the planning the staff put into the party. I’ve been going to the Newark museum for years. But this was the first time I had ever experience a child’s gathering there. I highly recommend it for parents that are looking for imaginative creative and educational spaces to have parties. Coloring fish and having them project it on the wall here there and on the other side of the globe at the same time was a magical activity The children absolutely loved. Along with the activity in the museum’s planetarium.

Wow, I lived in Newark for a while never thought of going to this museum. I visited it for the first time and let me tell you that it was amazing, well put together galleries and organized, unfortunately, the Mansion was closed due renovation until next year. I will have to come back.

Listen to me when I tell you...if I could give this place "10 stars" 🌟 I would!!! Between the cleanliness of the building to the beautiful art pieces on display by the extremely talented artists, for me this was sensory overload (in a good way). Furthermore, you don't realize how massive the museum is until you start exploring. I'm not gonna lie, one of the exhibits made cry for about 7 minutes straight (which exhibit you ask??...that's for another time & place). If you're ever in Newark, NJ and you don't stop by this place...something might seriously be wrong with you. An absolute must see!!!

Great museum!! A must visit If you are visiting this area! Not that big, but you can tell all the arts are carefully arranged/displayed in a logic order, which really make the understanding of the arts easier. Also, make sure you join the 1pm free tour!!! Betty was very nice and teaching type guide. She would ask you how you think of the arts first before explaining her understanding to you. Her interactive style of tour is so much more inspirational and you won’t lose attention easily.

My recent visit to the Newark Museum of Art was nothing short of phenomenal. A standout attraction, the Valentine House, offered an enriching dive into Newark’s history, leaving a lasting impression. The museum’s third-floor exhibits, showcasing Eastern cultures, were both enlightening and visually stunning. Equally impressive were the aquatic displays on the second floor, presenting a mesmerizing world of fish and sea life. The museum’s ambiance contributed significantly to the experience. Despite its offerings, the space was refreshingly uncrowded, allowing for an unhurried exploration. The staff deserves special mention for their helpfulness, enhancing the visit with their knowledge and assistance. Additionally, the gift shop was a delightful end to the journey, boasting a variety of unique items. This visit to the Newark Museum of Art was an enriching experience that I highly recommend. Its diverse exhibits and welcoming environment have left me eagerly anticipating my next visit.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had the privilege of providing photo booth services for a wedding at the Newark Museum of Art, and I must say, it was an experience like no other. The museum's backdrop, with its intricate architectural details and art installations, provided a unique and enriching environment that elevated the overall photo booth experience for the guests. Logistically, the museum's staff were a delight to collaborate with. From setting up the booth in the ideal location to ensuring that all electrical and space needs were met, their professionalism was top-notch. They ensured a smooth and hassle-free operation, allowing me to focus solely on capturing beautiful moments for the wedding guests. The ambiance and lighting inside the museum further enhanced the quality of the photos, resulting in some of the best shots I've captured in my career. Plus, the guests were enthralled with the idea of taking photos amidst such iconic art pieces, making my job all the more enjoyable. To any event service provider, the Newark Museum of Art stands out not just for its aesthetic appeal but also for its conducive environment for seamless event operations. I eagerly look forward to the opportunity to work in such a grand venue again

This was my first trip to Newark Museum of Art. We went for the Bisa Butler installation and were in awe. I highly recommend seeing it before it is gone. Additionally, we had the good fortune to speak with artist Wolfgang Gil. He patiently took the time to explain the process of his work which added to a surreal experience. I recommend taking the time to listen to and experience all of his pieces. Although a relatively small museum by comparison to NYC, they have many inspiring pieces. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The museum was clean and spacious. Presently, as they are fully reopening post pandemic shutdown, the cafe was still closed. There also was no shop or paper maps yet. Not surprisingly, you must show proof of vaccination upon arrival, have your temperature checked and wear a mask. They have ample parking. Overall, this was a fulfilling experience. We are looking forward to returning soon.

The only con is that there is current construction and an exhibit rotation happening, but what was accessible was fantastic to see. There were guides throughout who were extremely helpful too, so worries if it’s your first time (as was mine). The gift shop was very nicely curated and enabled further museum experience. It was a great place to shop for a gift for a friend or for yourself. I’m excited to visit when the construction is completed!

Went for the fall festival! It was fun. A few activities, more for the younger kiddos. Parking being $10 for two hours is annoying. There is almost NO WHERE to park downtown. So although the festival is free for entry, the food was $20 for a meal, or two food trucks outside. Nonetheless I’m always there for their events; family nights and adult functions .

I was born and raised and New Jersey -- with us being so close to NYC sometimes places like Newark Museum of Art gets overlooked. Truth is it's one of my favorite places to visit in Newark. You could spend all day here and still more to come back and experience. If you live in the area there's always an event that engages the community (and it's free for Newark residents). This was my first time visiting since the pandemic and with only 2hrs to make my rounds before closing I was completely moved by the newest exhibits. Even with some construction underway each space was enticing!

A local landmark with several locations to choose from within the venue couples can enjoy both indoor and outdoor ceremony and reception options, with a special getting ready area, and friends and family always enjoy walking through the exquisite exhibits taking in the art, paintings, and sculptures. The refined style of the Ballantine House with its rich oak paneling and elegant lighting is perfect for an intimate wedding, and often a popular choice for a getting ready room. The curved doorway leading into the sitting area provides a gorgeous backdrop for getting ready and bridal portraits. Every couple wants their wedding day to be a work of art; however, at the Newark Museum, your day can truly be a masterpiece.

Free weekend Tours at 1pm by friendly, fun experts! What Newark Museum of Art may lack in priceless masterpieces compared with other international city museums it more than makes up for with its beautiful curation, interior design and staffing. From ancient, through romantic, impressionism, modernism and post-modern and so many forms; sculpture, fabrics, even animated projections! All carefully organized into one cohesive and moving experience. Best experienced with the expert tour guides, Betty designed a special themed tour for us on Labor Day weekend that led us through pieces by local artists that celebrated the labor movement over the tumult of the last two centuries in the Newark area, from the Ashcan School via Joseph Stella to brilliant contemporary local artists like Bisa Butler and Willie Cole, pointing out themes that the excellent descriptions helpfully printed on the walls could not possibly fully convey. Enormous Elevators big enough for wheelchairs. Optional masking Sep 2022. Bags allowed.

This museum is good for family bonding. They have a lot of activities for the children and parents. The planetarium is little and the holographic is good enough. They have engaging activities and the staff showing the constellations at the planetarium is interacting with the visitor. He made me remember the constellations I almost forgot. The museum is not that big so 2-3 hours of museum activity is enough. I love their Asian collection located on the 2nd floor. The ticket is not pricey. I'm living in New Jersey so I got a free ticket.

What a wonderful experience it was! It will take you back in time with their informative exhibits. Loved listening to their vinyl record player and have a glimpse into how their bedrooms were like decades ago. What does need some work is their planetarium. It needs a drastic update. Other than that, I appreciate them being fully accesible for the disable. After walking through each exhibit, you realize how immense this museum truly is.

My wife & I visit museums all over the world & I was surprised to find such a gem nestled in Newark, NJ! Knowledgeable, friendly, & helpful staff. It has an insightful collections of paintings, sculptures & cultural artifacts spanning mostly American, Native American, Asian, African, Egyptian, Greek, & Roman art. And its free to Newark residents! There's a space w/ activities & thoughtfully designed games 4 families & children. There's a Planetarium, outdoor sculpture garden, & even interesting facts about the history of Newark itself. Remodeled, it's architecturally interesting, a great space to host an event, & much larger than you first might imagine; thought not too dauntingly to tackle in one full day. I love museums, so I opted to visit multiple days to learn & enjoy everything @ a more leisurely pace. Originally a geek from Jersey City, I'm slightly embarrassed that I never even knew the Newark Museum of Art was there! Definitely deserving to sit atop any "things to do in Newark" list. I'd highly recommend a visit to everyone & encourage locals to get a membership!

A very good museum well worth a visit. The Ballantine house is a nicely restored Victorian era home attached to the museum. A nice assortment of Asian, African, European and American art. There is a parking lot right next to the museum. A cafe is being installed. There is a planetarium also within the building. Great place to spend a day.

The best of the 15 presidential sites I have visited. Museum is not bland and very informative. Lots of stories and lessons about the times or challenges that Cleveland and the nation face in the late 1800s. Exhibits are very descriptive and not blend it all. The tour guide had a lot of interest in engaging me and found it ver lots of stories and lessons about the times or challenges that Cleveland and the nation face in the late 1800s.The tour guide had a lot of interest in engaging me in my tour. The tour guide was a sweet old lady I learned a lot about Cleveland and his presidency I strongly urge you to come here. The Porta potty in the parking lot was a little too modern I was expecting an out house. The staff were some of the nicest people I have met and made the trip that much better. I would 100% recommend coming here.

It's cool that this is here. To be clear, this is not Monticello or Mt. Vernon, but it is full of artifacts and has a sense of historic dignity. We were the only ones there at the time, and we were suddenly called out to pick someone up from school, so we needed to cut the tour very early; rather than being annoyed, our guide showed us the "one minute version" to see the highlights of the museum. Very accommodating, enthusiastic staff! Will return.

We travelled from PA to Newark for a visit to the museum. TravelAdvisor says it is the biggest museum in NJ, though not likely accurate, It is worth your visit as a museum fan. The African collection, the Tibetan Buddhism collection, and the meditative section were a highlight. Some of the modern arts works are very beautiful too. It was fun talking to the staff at the museum. The museum is a lot bigger than from outside. We got the admissions through AAM membership and a guest pass. Do check out the website for free admit opportunities.

We ended up here because our flight out of Newark was cancelled, and it was within walking distance from our hotel. We only managed to check out the kids' section of the museum, but it alone is worth all 5 stars. There are several interactive exhibits that use art to educate and entertain. A perfect combination! We also picked up food and ate in the garden behind the museum, which was lovely with two toddlers. A perfect way to spend an afternoon!

Newark Museum of Art is a hidden gem that should not be missed. I was thoroughly impressed with the diverse range of art collections and exhibits housed within its walls. From ancient artifacts to contemporary masterpieces, there is something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy. One aspect that particularly stood out to me was the museum's commitment to showcasing art from different cultures and backgrounds. It was fascinating to see how various artistic expressions have evolved over time and across different regions. The museum provides a truly enriching cultural experience. I also loved how interactive and engaging the exhibits were. The museum offers hands-on activities and interactive displays, which make the visit even more enjoyable, especially for families with children. It is a great place to learn, explore, and appreciate art in a fun and interactive way. Overall, I highly recommend visiting The Newark Museum of Art. It is not only a feast for the eyes but also an opportunity to expand one's knowledge and understanding of art and different cultures. Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply looking for a unique and educational experience, this museum is definitely worth a visit.

Really nice museum with different exhibits for children of all ages. Our toddler enjoyed the interactive underwater exhibit in animal kingdom the best. We'll definitely be back even if it's just for this one! There was a wedding being held the day we went and the setup looked amazing as soon as we entered. There's also a PJs coffee shop as soon as you enter for quick snacks or coffee.

I had the incredible pleasure of photographing Vanessa and John's wedding at the Newark Art Museum, and I cannot speak highly enough about the experience. From the moment I stepped into the venue, I was captivated by the unique blend of artistry and ambiance that this museum offers. The museum provided a stunning backdrop for the wedding, with its captivating exhibits and architectural beauty. As a photographer, it was a dream come true to have such a diverse range of settings for capturing moments – from the grandeur of the main hall to the intimate corners filled with exquisite artworks. The staff at the Newark Art Museum were not only professional but also genuinely passionate about ensuring the couple's day was nothing short of magical. They were accommodating, friendly, and went above and beyond to make the entire process seamless. The lighting throughout the venue was impeccable, allowing me to showcase my photography in the best possible way. The museum's team was also incredibly supportive in coordinating logistics, ensuring that everything ran smoothly on the wedding day. I highly recommend the Newark Art Museum as a wedding venue for couples seeking a one-of-a-kind, art-infused backdrop for their special day. As a wedding photographer, I felt inspired and empowered to create truly unique and timeless images. Thank you to the Newark Art Museum for being a fantastic partner in helping me bring my couples creative vision to life. I look forward to the opportunity to capture more beautiful moments at this extraordinary venue in the future. Andrew Allen Andrew Allen Media

Imagine the quality of the Smithsonian but without crowds, plus the benefit of a super-friendly staff. My family went to visit the Museum this past Sunday and were blown away by the diversity of the art on display as well as Ballantine House but the staff was just as amazing. We were all made to feel welcome, that they appreciated us just for coming but really we were so glad that we took the time to visit. What a gem! Again, the staff just made the whole thing that much better. They were enthused about art as much as we were and it showed. Thanks for a great day!

They pack a LOT into a small, oddly shaped space, without feeling cramped at all! Organized by culture, you can snake your way through the world's art, see the featured exhibit on 2, then hop back up to play in the small but very well made nature center. The Ballantine House is part of the museum and actually attached. You enter from inside, on the first floor. Much like other historic houses of its day, but cool to see it absorbed by a museum! The shop is nice (no pins or patches), parking is $10, and no cafe (yet, being built now). Grounds includes an outside loop with somber sculptures and a historic schoolhouse for parents that started the board of education in Newark. Also, a Fire Museum (that was unfortunately closed when I tried to go).

The worst of the 14 Presidential sites I have visited. Museum is bland and non-informative. No stories or lessons about the times or challenges that Cleveland and the nation faced in the late 1800s. Exhibits are non-descriptive and bland, at best. The tour guide had no interest in engaging me, but rather found it burdensome to take me around (I was the only person there, most likely the only person who visited that day). Additionally, the tour guide insulted and disrespected me, and gave an insincere "apology" when confronted. I drove two hours to see this museum, and only spent 15 minutes there. The tour guide showed no concern for that, nor for the genuine interest I had in learning about Cleveland and his Presidency. I strongly urge you not to waste your time here. The foundation has made no effort to engage visitors and those who might find Cleveland and his time period interesting. Additionally, the staff made the trip all the worse. Also, the only bathroom is a porta potty in the parking lot, which when I visited, clearly hadn't been emptied for a few months. One could argue it was a health code violation.

Had a wonderful experience here today. Our tour guide (a retired history teacher) was fabulous! I love history, especially about the Presidents. My wife is normally not as enthusiastic as I am. However, this woman was so captivating that even my wife told her that she made learning about Grover Cleveland the best presidential learning experience she ever had. Coming from my wife, that is an enormous compliment!

It's small but a good place to take your kids to learn more about Grover Cleveland. You can also try wearing clothes from that time period and take pictures.

If you are driving through Caldwell NJ and/or are interested in US history, this is a must-stop. The inside is closed because of Covid, but when it was open, the employees inside were extremely kind, helpful, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to make the visit incredible!

Fantastic tour of the home by a dedicated and extremely knowledgeable guide. Sharon answered all our questions and kept the attention of all the kids in our homeschool group, from preschool to high school. Definitely worth the trip. And, admittance is FREE!

The birth place is very well preserved and presented. The tour from what I remember was pretty informative about one of the most unique presidents in our history. If you are ever in Caldwell, this is a must see.

The tour guide is great. She was pleasant and informative. There aren't a lot of rooms to view with that said there is a lot of history in the ones you can see. Not only did we learn about former president Cleveland we also learned that there have been more 1st ladies than presidents. Everyone she make an effort to see this house.

Nice historical home in a setting convenient to western Essex County, New Jersey. The home is well preserved and is to a large extent remains unchanged since the past President was born here. The staff is helpful and informative. Tours take about 30 minutes.

A great place to learn some local history about an American president. We also refer back to the slice of the presidents birthday cake that is on display at the house, we reminds us of the Seinfeld episode with the entamins .

An excellent house museum devoted to one of the more obscure presidents. It's small, just a few rooms. However its is very good at showing what life in that period was for a middle class family.Very kid friendly with period toys and dress up.The curator is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable.

It was a privilege to be at the Newark Museum of Art. It was surprised to see a mix of Art...thought it was all contemporary pieces in America. It was soooo much more. Staff is friendly. Didn't get to see the entire museum...must go back

Outstanding mid-sized museum, a true gem. An endlessly interesting and varied collection, brilliantly curated and brought to life with modern and historical context. Beautiful pieces from cultures and eras all around the world.

This is the best museum that I've been to. It may not be a big as the MoMA, but it has the same impact with much, much, fewer people/crowds. Selections are curated well. I enjoy visiting the Balls time House and the Monk temple. Recently they opened up a Natural history project that spans the entire 3rd floor. It is definitely worth a visit all by itself. You can easily fill an entire day with just museum. I believe the Balls time House is being renovated right now, but there is still lots more, with even more on the way, including a new eatery. Best part of all is that it is free for Newark residents. That being said, it's a good idea to leave a little donation. My daughter and I can make it a daily stop after school let's out to do some fun learning. Love, love, love this museum.

Went to see local quilter Bisa Butler's quilt, The Warmth of Other Sons, but arrived unexpectedly during her tv interview. Saw an amazing Adinkra art piece and bottle top wall hanging instead! Will return later for Butler's quilt.

I've been here many times before and enjoyed every exhibit, however, on this visit I was looking to keep a toddler busy on a rainy day and was not disappointed. There were educational toys, a painting session, a Lego etc room and the planetarium. A good time was had by all and an afternoon nap was in order for grandma and the toddler. 😆

visited the museum today, it was a very discouraging experience, on each floor and gallery a young white woman followed us, then on the first floor she followed us, like suspects, she saw my bag and jacket as if I were going to have a piece of art inside, (as if I were a thief). My husband walks into the bathroom and almost walks into the men's room. She harassed us so much that she called a supervisor, feeling that they were both following me, I left the place. I am concerned that in a place like this they discriminate against people because of their clothing, race, appearance. Very unpleasant .

The museum hosts a wide variety of exhibits, covering ancient to modern eras, nature as well as culture, and different world regions. It features various artists in addition to famous ones such as Sargent, O'Keeffe, Cassatt, Rothko. And it had displays of exotic themes such as Tibet and Native America. The museum is quiet which I really enjoyed.

Went on a Friday afternoon..was basically empty. 👍 From reception and all the way through staff was helpful and pleasant. Exhibits def. captivated my attention. My two favorite were Bisa Butler And Native Artists of N America. I spent abt 2.5 hrs there. Gift shop was nice to browse, but as with most museum gift shops it was a bit pricey. Atleast for me. I'm recommending all my friends to visit.

I enjoyed our time in the museum. They had a very eclictic collection & it was interesting to move from art collections that were so diverse from one another. The museum had some closed areas & no food offerings so I wouldn't recommend staying a long time, but for a quiet pre- or post-lunch perusal, it was a worthwhile experience.

The Newark Museum of Art deserves an applause for being the perfect backdrop for our extraordinary wedding celebration. With its stunning architecture and elegant ambiance, it elevated the entire experience to a whole new level. A deep and special thank you to Shalaina P. and the museum staff! They all were incredibly accommodating and ensured that every moment was flawlessly executed. We left with unforgettable lasting memories and a deep appreciation for this cultural gem.

It is surprising that this museum has a wonderful collection of South Asia arts, which is very rare in other places in North America.
