Well preserved very characteristic water town about 90 mins by bus from Shanghai. Definitely worth the visit, and plan some time to just walk around, explore the little streets and shops and gardens. Walk along the coast on the wooden path and up and down the bridges. Although one of 1000-year-old houses hosts a Starbucks, most restaurants are typical Chinese so be ready for that. Some people still live here so you may end up in someone’s backyard or quiet hotel.

A very beautiful town full of canals between Shanghai and Suzhou. Inside there are old mansions and temples to visit, some Kunqu opera to watch, and countless restaurants and stalls selling snacks and more. Wander the streets and enjoy the atmosphere. I felt like I was in an old Chinese drama. At night, the reflections in the water provide amazing photo opportunities.

Beautiful water town, preserved almost in its original form. Well maintained and it clearly gives you an experience that you will never forget. Takes you back in time.

Wonderful place to visit ,like ppl have said the Venice of China . Lots of cozy little inns to rest your head at very good prices , shop around a little to find your price range . Stay away from Grandma's tea room , not so good . Most of the restaurants have the same local menu ,once again shop around a little .

This is a really picturesque water town restored to its former glory. It's not far from Shanghai. You can book into a tour group for a day trip there from Shanghai.

Picturesque ancient water town near Shanghai, comparable to Venice. This place is relatively unknown among western tourists coming to Shanghai.

Really ancient water town near Suzhou area, this place is a great getaway from the massive cities nearby. With small shops, villages and museums, Zhouzhuang is a tourist attraction even to the locals.
