A good chill-out place to go in Shanghai area. Tourists can get to there by subway directly which is very convenient. Ancient buildings beside the river make people feel like walking in the past. Many restaurants and street foods are available, and tourists can even pay to get on a boat for river sightseeing.

Small village with charming atmosphere of old buildings, channels and bridges. Tourists can taste local food, buy souvenirs and travel along channels on Chinese-styled boats. There is a metro station nearby.

if you have already seen all the touristy spots in shanghai like nanjing east road, the bund and the oriental pearl tower, it wont be a bad choice to visit this place small, old and quiet town with few shops and restaurants along the street most of the shops seem to be closed due to covid. it's still quite empty here

Beautiful little water town with lots of history. Expect to do a lot of walking as the streets are a bit of a maze and lots of little stalls to stop at. Great for lots of local foods at a relatively low price (given it is a tourist location). There are paid attractions but the town itself is free to enter. I particularly enjoyed the soy sauce market/shop which sold many local marinated/pickled goods. Getting to zhujiajiao from shanghai city was relatively simple, albeit a significantly long journey. We too the mtro line 2 from nanjing road to hongqiao airport station, then switched to line 17 to zhujiajiao station. Metro fare was ¥8 one way for an adult. Be reminded that bags need to go through scanning for metros, so leave sharp objects at home. Going into the town, there is the option to hail a ride, rent a bike, or buy a boat ticket. The little boat is 20 min long, ¥40 per person and will take you directly to the middle of the water town, so while pricey, i thought it was worth it. You can send a postcard to yourself at the post office here (they offer international postage), and also visit some temples dating back to the ming/qing dynasty. The night view is spectacular along the river, but the streets will be pitch dark (little to no street lights). Store owners are very friendly and will happily guide you to the metro station if asked. A bit of a walk back to the station (maybe 15 min at a brisk walk) but not too bad. This was one of my favourite tourist spots during my stay in shanghai, so if you like old style buildings/environments, i highly recommend taking the journey here.

A small beautiful ancient Chinese village at outskirt of Shanghai, settled at the bank or Caogang river & rivulets. Many older looking Chinese houses were lined at both side of river & transportation was by boat. A lot of stone arch bridges crossed the walkway for pedestrians. Many traditional Chinese shops, restaurants & emerging modern western restaurants were there. We were delighted to see a store selling dried snakes, sea horses, scorpions & various fishes. Pig legs, chicken feet, whole baby chicken, whole pork thigh etc. in different soya sauce were on display for sale. Also called Venice of Shanghai was a good place to visit.

Just what you wanted to see when you decided to visit a historical part of China and not going too far away from Shanghai. Most people take the metro to come here, but instead I got a taxi from Didi app (Chinese Uber) and saved both time and my legs (specially on the way back after a few hours walking) and just relaxed on my way back to Shanghai. You will find lots of shops, tea houses, temples, bridges, gondolas and people, lots of people. Very enjoyable short trip , a perfect place for photos, street food, souvenirs and a glimpse of what life was like in ancient China.

Great experience! The town is culturally enriching as the vendors live behind or above their shop. Families work together and it’s a tight knot community. Some owners even have microphones to get you to visit, it’s very interesting. They have shops that cook fresh fish, crab and even turtle for you - literally you pick the one you want. I wasn’t a fan of this, but it’s culturally acceptable so it was interesting to look at. Not sure on pricing because I didn’t opt into this.... Need Weechat to purchase most things, cash is accepted at some places as well. Restrooms are difficult to find, be sure to go when you enter.

what a wonderful place to visit at the outskirts of Shanghai! take about an hour drive from the town down or you can take MRT to be here. Here you can experience kind of Venice’s Gondola because There are beautiful canals accessible by Chinese boats, along the canal-side many shops, restaurants, tea-places and temples. Most of the streets are narrow and you can see elements of beautiful traditional Chinese streets foods , habits lifestyle in this ancient town with the old time architecture. you also can find many things to buy that are not that easy to find elsewhere in Shanghai, like traditional Chinese hats, clothes, paintings, jewels and more. We had our lunch at the restaurants along the river, as the food there is with their own recipe and cooking styles it may differs with many other Chinese cuisine, anyway it’s still a great experience in general.

DISAPPOINTING AS ITS MOSTLY A TOURIST TRAP The ride out to the "ancient town" on the Shanghai Metro (Line 17) is interesting and cheap (use your Metro pass). The station is a 1.3 km from the town but it's a nice walk on a well signposted road. We went on a cool overcast day but I imagine it wouldn't be very comfortable on a hot, humid day! As you walk to the town from the train station you will pass by some interesting villages which, I think, are far more interesting than the town itself. Lots of gorgeous old stone bridges and simple village environments. Very few people will speak English, so if you can't speak Mandarin you will be pretty much on your own until you get into town. When you get there, expect lots of tourist shops and - believe it or not - a Starbucks Coffee outlet!! You can take a local boat ride while there but you can see just as much by walking along the canal and over the numerous bridges.

If you are in Shanghai and have half a day to spare, an ideal destination will be Zhujiajiao 朱家角. As in other water towns, there are many bridges here. Fangsheng 放生(Release into Freedom) with its 5 round arches being the most prominent. There are folks peddling small fish🐟, tortoise 🐢 to visitors to be released into the waterways. Then there are others in small boats nearby ready to scoop them up for resale, how ironic. Well, just enjoy the scenery, boat ride and food in this ancient town.

A wonderful place to visit at the eastern outskirts of Shanghai! There are beautiful canals accessible by gondola-style Chinese boats, many shops, restaurants, tea-places, museums and temples. Most of the streets are narrow and you can see elements of beautiful traditional Chinese architecture. In its market you can find too many things to buy that are not that easy to find elsewhere in Shanghai, like traditional Chinese hats, clothes, paintings, jewels, street-food and more. Just remember that you might need to negotiate the price a little bit, especially if you are a Westerner. The boat-rides around the canals are fantastic and relatively cheap. There are many nice spots to take photos around. The only negative might be the restaurants along the river, as the food there is mediocre and a bit overpriced. A great experience in general.

Nice 1.5 hour ride on Shanghai Metro to get there. The town is another 10 mins walk from the train station. The ancient town is pretty much converted into restaurants and souvenir shops for tourists. You get the see the locals and their daily activities as you walk from the train station to the ancient town center. The streets are quite narrow and so watch out when all the tour groups descend to the location. Best to arrive at 9am so you won't be fighting against the crowd. Definitely try the different local delicacies

This old "water town" may not be quite the "Venice of the East" as claimed by some, but it was certainly the highlight of my week in Shanghai. There is an 80 RMB ticket (2019 price) to enter that includes a short boat ride and various museums and temples. The town was clean and tidy but still very typical and realistic, despite being a popular tourist spot. Well worth 4 hours of your time.

This is the perfect day trip from Shanghai. You don’t need to pay for an expensive tour as you can take the metro and get off at Zhujiajiao, it’s a 20 min walk or you can take a bus. We spent hours walking through the narrow streets. Lots of options for buying handmade, traditional souvenirs. You can take the boats, or walk over the large traditional bridges to get through the village. Lots of places to eat, but it was hard finding vegetarian options.

Worth a day trip from Shanghai. Zhujiaojiao still maintains much of its historical charm even while being packed full with little shops. The numerous bridges crossing the river are picturesque and worth stopping at. I recommend staying till sunset when the lanterns are lit up and the sun casts a warm glow over the whole town. I don't recommend going during CNY, though. It was uncomfortably busy with thousands of visitors. If you go, allow for extra time, and consider taking little breaks along the wall to escape from the crowds. Grab a tea along the river to regain some peace of mind.

The view and over all management is very good. No garbage in the river and pedestrain. The southern part of the town is very crowded, The northern part is less crowded but also less shop. If you look for a convenient and "tourist" shop then the northern part is suitable for you. And the provieded free paper map is only show the main road and some toilet is not show in the correct location.

Lovely small town with amazing views at every corner. I mostly loved to walk around and collect views of all the bridges, and keep in mind that also slightly out of the most touristic center of town is lovely. Try to avoid the mass of tourists (mostly Chinese!) at noon during weekends. Full of small tourist shops with lower prices than inside Shanghai. Also lots of food small shops to try!

Ancient mood blend in actual life is the best. From centre of Shanghai take a few hour to come here. See the culture, the real life and eat a delicious street food. Moreover, enjoy to take photo art painting and sculpture on the way before cross the bridge to floating market.

I have read different articles stating this was "the venice of the east." I don't think I would go that far in my description of Zhujiajiao. A water town is definitely a must when visiting Shanghai, but you should choose a less visited one. It was too crowded and not enjoyable with the packed streets. I will definitely visit another water town when I return to Shanghai.

It's just the horror of what's happening on the bridges and in the narrow streets! UNESCO protected ancient town that represents chinese architecture, but unfortunately very dirty. The town needs some renovations just to maintain the ancient buildings, bridges and infrastructures in a good condition. Also there is a small street market in this town with typical Chinese products where you can deal better prices.
