The tamales here have definitely gone downhill the past few years. They have changed their original recipe & they are mostly masa. The filling is pulverized "mystery meat" & it came oozing out of the masa like diarrhea! It was gross. I tossed 10 of the 12 tamales in the trash & I won't be going back for tamales again. The bakery goods are fairly decent, as are the smothered breakfast burritos.

I’ve been going to La Popular for 40 years. I hadn’t been there for sometime and went in today to buy a dozen tamales and paid $19. They are half the size and the filling was mushy. I was looking forward to the traditional tamale and left very disappointed. I will not go back

I live a few blocks away and this is a great place to get your masa, tortillas, and any other Mexican foods, you desire. The staff is always very friendly.. I normally get a mix of red and green tamales with a pint of beans in a pint of chili. I also buy their masa to make my own tortillas. Great place.m!

My family has been getting Tamales here for 40years, use to be the best tamales in Colorado. I bought 2dozen yesterday and was very disappointed. Very Dry, very little meat , little flavor and cost more then ever. Ok I can live with price being more and same quality but not higher cost and less product/less quality. This may be the last time I buy from here unless something improves.

They have really gone downhill in the past few years. Super dry. The red has a puréed mush that does not resemble meat but more like retried beans. The green tamales are ok. Masa is super dry. Workers are not friendly - at all and still want to be tipped. And pretty pricey too. If you want some delicious tamales I recommend La Casita

I came to Denver for a day trip and was recommended this place by someone in a store next door. I got their breakfast burrito, and it was amazing! I loved it. Spicy and quick. The prices were great, and I also snagged a loaf of sweet bread on my way our! Would definitely recommend!

Checked website for friend going to Denver. I am 70 years old and I recommended this landmark remembering my visits as child eating the best tamales ever on the back seat of my parents '54 Pontiac. We lived 50 miles away and we did this 2x/mo. It was our Sunday family drive and the treat was this extrodinary place. I live in AZ now and flooded with Mexican. Have yet to find one that compares to La Popular. None.

I love going to La Popular for their breakfast burritos! The staff are super friendly and the last time I went in they had a pumpkin filled pastry that was amazing! Great for on the run breakfast. I haven't had their other options, but I'd go back just to interact with the kind people.

La Popular far precedes the growth and gentrification of the neighborhood but remains a decent spot to get pre-made tamales to go or supplies to make your own including their masa. Food has been more hit or miss over the last few years, would guess they are feeling the pressure of the increasing cost in the neighborhood and starting to skimp on some ingredients. I'm sure the demographic of their customers has really changed and I'm sure that's challenging. I'll still come by for some cheap and delicious tamales when I'm in the area though.

Came back for the first time in years and picked up some tamales, chips, and salsa. There’s something abt Popular’s tamales that is unique. Almost like al dente noodles, they are super firm which gives a satisfying bite to sink in to. YUM! The chips are very sturdy, great for dipping and the salsa is refreshing with respectable spice. The only thing keeping this from a five-star review are the high prices, but I get that this area, just like many in Denver is getting pricier. The price of being Popular.

I'm from Cali with a haspanic food background and their food is by far some of the best flavor, price, quickness, and ease of access. Absolutely love this place. ♡

Probably the best, most legit tamales in Denver. Traditional red or spicier green, they are fabulous! Get 'em by the dozen, hot or frozen

I got to said this!!! The only reason why I came to tried them is because the Westword recommended them as some of the best Tamales in town. But let me tell you, I am from Mexico city and these tamales were horrible! I don't know what people are thinking when they give them 5 stars! Maybe because they never had real Tamales in their life! I can find better Tamales at the frozen section of the local Walmart. Their red Tamales don't even have meat in them and they are overpriced!!!! ABSOLUTELY DISAPOINTED!!!!....I would not recommend whatsoever!

One of the best in Denver? I decided to order 1 dozen red and 1 dozen green. Very disappointed! Masa was way to thick and red chili meat was mushy and not an appealing texture. Green chili was not as bad but still not even close to what I have had from other less known places. Maybe it is the factory mentality that ruins what should be a labor of love or maybe it's because I got them for Christmas Eve dinner. Definitely won't be back nor would I recommend.

I've been getting their smothered beef and been green chili burrito since 2010. Always consistent. Always fast. Spoken briefly to the owner once or twice. Very cordial. He seemed grateful to me as a customer. Check 'em out!

This has been our go-to whenever we want delicious, authentic tamales! Their breakfast burritos and green chili are yummy and their pastries are amazing too!

I always love their Tamales. Like a mom makes. I usually get a couple dozen of red and the same green (hotter). You gotta at least try 'em out. The staff is always accommodating and friendly. Be nice. Go there and give it a whirl and the baked goods are a rush too. Not too sweet... Thanks Dan.

Really nice people working, great breakfast burrito. Didn’t love the cookie or the apple dessert, but would happily eat more breakfast burritos.

Awesome tamales! Take out only. Got both red and green pork—can’t decide which I like better. A dozen for about $20 with tip. Can’t beat that. They also have a lot of baked treats. Small shop. Spanish-language soap opera on the tv.

Been going here for years and they still have the best tamales I've ever eaten. 10/10 would recommend.
