It is one of the most visited Hindu shrines in South India and is dedicated to the Goddess Bhagavathy who is worshipped as Saraswati in the morning, Lakshmi during the day, and Durga in the evening. HISTORY The Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple is believed to be about 1500 years old. Legend has it that the temple was built in the midst of a dense jungle by a forest-dweller called Kannappan. Kannappan was a doting father who loved his young daughter. He sacrificed a beast to the Goddess Bhagavathy each day and one occasion could not find any animals to slaughter. He asked his daughter for her pet calf but the daughter preferred to give up her own life for the goddess. The calf spoke to Kannappan and revealed that it was the Goddess in animal form. A transformed Kannappan started to worship her at the place where the sacrifices were made by him. The shrine fell into disuse and was eventually discovered by a grass cutter. The Chottanikkara Bhagavathy amman (goddess) and the Keezhu Kaavu Bhadrakali amman are worshipped as the healing goddesses. A steady worship of the deities in this temple is believed to cure even life-threatening diseases. The lower temple Bhadrakali is the patron goddess of exorcists of the Hindu faith. A 41-day worship of the Goddess is believed to cure the worst of mental maladies and supernatural possessions by evil spirits. The temple premises houses an ancient ‘pala’ tree (Alstonia scholaris). Those cured of possession by demons, and malevolent spirits drive a nail into the tree or into the fence that surrounds this tree. In earlier times, devotees are believed to have driven these nails using their foreheads instead of a hammer. The presence of thousands of such nails in and around the tree stands testimony to the miraculous cures that the goddess bestows and to the incredible faith that has been drawing thousands to the temple each year.In the morning you can have darshan upto 12 noon and in the evening upto 8 pm. Beautiful Temple with Rich history and lots of powerful positive energy. However I really feel sad to see the poor upkeep of the temple! Strongly feel that the Devaswam board to be using the funds from donations to maintain such historical and holy places. Unfair treatment by all past governments as all of them just didn’t bother about the majority community.

Chotanikkara Devi Temple - Everything is good but few points are to be noted- * On Sundays there is unexpected rush of devotees in the temple and long queue since early morning as the temple opens at 4am * For the aged people, there is no sitting area where they can rest for a while. They have to stand for hours in queue * There should be a separate queue or management for old age people * The drinking water facility is unhygienic & sometimes empty. If this becomes paid also for a minimal amount, it's fine but it needs to be taken seriously Very old and famous for getting healed from various diseases and disabilities.. Devotees come from long ways to get blessed by Maa Bhagwathy.. You get very positive vibes when you enter the premises and there are two famous temples of the Devi - Mele Kavil & Thazhe Kavil A must visit temple and truly recommended to all.

It is the most important Temple among the 393 shrines spread over 3 Districts of Kerala and coming under the administration of Cochin Devaswom Board. The Divine Mother known as Rajarajeswari (Adiparasakthi) is worshipped here in three forms Saraswathy in the morning, Lakshmi at noon and Durga in the evening. There is an Idol of Mahavishnu on the same pedestal and so the Deity is called Ammenarayana, Devinarayana, Lakshminarayana and Bhadrenarayana also. Along with Lakshmi & Narayana there are idols of Brahma, Siva, Ganapathi (Ganesh), Subramanya and Sastha on the same pedestal. Apart from the main deity, the temple complex consists of Kizhukkavu Bhagavathy temple, temples for Sastha, Siva, Ganapathi, Nagas and other Upa-Devas. The pleasant atmosphere in the temple give mental peace and harmony to devotees. "MAKOM Thozhal" is the most important festival of the temple which is celebrated in the month of Kumbham(malayalam month) .It is believed that Bhagavathy in her full attire gave darsan to Vilwamangalam Swamiyar on the Makom day and appears on the same day every year for giving darsan to the devotees in her special appearance. The Bhadrakaali at Kizhukkavu is believed to exorcise evil spirit from devotees, after conducting bhajanam. The annual festival of the temple comes in Kumbham. It begins with Kodiyettu (Flag hoisting ceremony) on Rohini day, lasts for 7 days and ends on Uthram star. Daily Para ezhunnellippu over neighbouring areas (houses in the Thattakam) and then Aarattu is conducted on these days. During the ulsavam, comes the important day of Makom. Makom Thozhal (Devi darsan) between 2 pm and 8 pm is considered to be most effectual for Mangalyam (long married life) and for getting best marriage for girls. The Deity in full attire specially decorated with gold and diamonds shine in its entire splendor. There is Pooram ezhunnellippu with 7 Elephants in the morning and at night. The ulsavam ends with Uthram Aarattu and Valiya Guruthi (Atham Guruthy).

One of the traditional and very powerful temples of Bhagavathi in Kerala. High energy is an understatement. It is one of our many pilgrimages and first one after onset of Covid 19. Guruthi the symbolic sacrifice ritual in Keezhkaavu before closing temple for the day is the highlight. Don't miss the evening Seeveli, a daily ritual procession In Melkaavu temple and in the procession of caparisoned elephant carrying the moorthi of Devi and it is considered Shri Mahamayi Bhagavathi (worshipped as Saraswati, Durga and Lakshmi at different times of the day)

Nice temple. Seems to be very popular but not too crowded in the morning. Men must remove upper body clothing but they can be carried on the shoulder.

The Chottanikkara Bagavathy Temple boasts impressive architecture, but I was disappointed by the absence of drinking water facilities. The security personnel's behavior was abrasive and loud, which detracted from the serene atmosphere. Additionally, requesting visitors to remove clothing is uncomfortable and seems out of place in a temple setting. Overall, improvements in visitor amenities and security etiquette are needed to enhance the temple experience.

The temple gives a good inner peace while visiting. It may be crowded on special days and on particular timings. I visited there between 10:30-11 am and i entered inside without any queue. Parking is available nearby temple premises. Beware of scammers who approach directly.

One of the most famous temples in Kerala, beautiful design and real calming feel to it. When we went, it was just prior to a prayer ceremony and close to closing time, so the temple was nearly empty. Had ample time to get a really good darshan. This temple is renowned for being a really powerful one and has apparently helped cure lots of mental ailments. Situated some way out of Kochi in Chottanikara, but totally worth the visit.

Lots of people were there, but there was no rush as the area was big. The Goddess here is believed to have divine power for curing mental patients.

The temple Purana is - Adi Sankara wanted to bring Mahasaraswati from Kashmir after meditation, Devi agrees to come on one condition that he shouldn't turn back, he will hear the anklet sound. Adi Sankara prays to Devi, and she agrees to come to Chottanikkara as Mahasaraswati. Devi in the morning is known as Mahasaraswati, and in the afternoon, Mahalakshmi and evening Parvathi. Also, the temple is known as Vaishnavite Kshetra as Mahavishnu stays with her (Mahalakshmi). Kelzhakavu Bhagavathi is. Known as Badrakali and he cures mental illness and also removes any evils in the body. The poojas used to be performed on Fridays earlier, and now it's done daily. One of the divine places in Kerala.

Chottanikkkara Bhakavathi temple is my one of most favourite temple & One of the famous Temples in Kerala, situated at Chottanikkara Panchayath in Ernakulam district. This is a big Temple is with Mele-kavu and Kizhe-kavu. There is Dharmashastha Temple, Nagas and Hanuman. There is a small pond near the Kizhe-kavu. It's a positive vibe there. I went chottanikkkara Bhakavathi temple yesterday for my nephew's "Choroonu". You willnot need to book for choorunnu, because lot's of kids are in there to have there first choorunnu. But make a call for enquiry to the respected authorities before you get into there. Usually,It is heavily crowded but due to Corona situation the crowd is quite less. you will get a lot of time to pray There is abundant parking space available for those visiting the temple, Special types of offering are available here relief in diseases

Beautiful temple architecture, clean and well maintained. But the temple timings are not clear. When asked for the darshan timings in the archana counter, security guard, and some locals working in temple, none of them said correctly, unfriendly local people and staffs. Not a tourist friendly destination. I’m aware that Goddess is powerful here, but with such poor management and staffs it’s not welcoming for tourists. We waited for 1 hour since all these people here misguided us. 3 stars for the beautiful temple architecture and maintenance. 0 stars for the unfriendly staffs and people working here! If you’re a tourist please double check in advance regarding timings. #IndiaTrip #Kerala

ATTENTION - AUTHORITIES AND CONCERNED OFFICIALS. The temple employees and the police men are allowing their kith and kin to enter the temple by jumping the queue on rush days. At the same time they bullies the other devotees. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN AT SUCH A HOLY PLACE. I DEMAND EQUALITY ATLEAST AT A TEMPLE OF SUCH STATURE.( CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT UNDER ART 14). Other than this issue, the temple is a must visit for believers. The temple has got a legendary history. You can read about it in the "Aithihyamala"book written by Sri Kottarathil Shankunni.

Chottanikkara Temple is one among the most famous temples of Kerala where mentally disturbed people, come in thousands to get cured. This temple is 8 KM away from present-day Thripoonithura (which is a suburb of Kochin or Eranakulam). There are two main temples here. The first one we see as soon as we enter is the temple of Rajarajeswari. The one behind it in a slightly lower elevation is called Keezhekavu, which has Bhadra Kali consecrated there. The Rajarajeswari is worshipped as Goddess Saraswathi in the morning, as Bhadra kali at noon and Durga in the night. This temple opens its doors every day at 4 AM. People believe that Goddess Mookambika of Kollur attends the first worship here before going to her temple. Another peculiarity of this temple is that the Goddess is not fixed to the ground but rests on a bed of sand. Nearby her, is the idol of Lord Vishnu. Hence the devotees always pray to her along with her brother Lord Narayana and chant 'Amme Narayana'. Note : Sufficient parking area is available near the temple.

Chotanikkara Bhagawathy Temple situated at a distance of 17 kms from the city of Kochi is one of the major religious destination and devi temple in the state of Kerala. One can take metro till Thripunitura (SN junction) and bus from there or else regular direct buses are also available from different parts of Kochi city. One may find the place crowded during auspicious and festival days so getting a darshan maybe tedious.

Chotanikkara Bhgavathi temple is a sacred place for Hindu. People from far and wide, mostly from southern states visit as a pilgrimage. Devotees to Sabarimala do visit Chottanikkara on their way. Devotees believe, among other things Devi will solve problems of mental disorders.

Wonderful temple located in Chottanikkara, Ernakulam and is one of the famous temple in Kerala. People suffering from mental illnesses came here for cure.Guruthi pooja is a ritual done at late evening to invoke goddess Mahakali. The annual Chottanikkara Makam Thozhal is the major festival in Chottanikara temple. It is believed that on this day the Vilvumangala Swamiyar saw the goddess at the temple. Few pics from my recent visit.

The temple is so serene and extends a long way. Each time you visit, you can see devi dressed in a beautiful saree with a set of ornaments. Weekends has got the most crowds, hence it is better to visit during weekdays. There is sufficient parking facility also outside the temple.

  • 4/5 ARUN A. 11 months ago on Google
I don't prefer going there on rainy days. Full of mud on pavement. No water facility to wash feet. The temple is big. Parking available. Payasam available for 100Rs.

Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple is a spiritual gem in Kerala. Serene, rich in tradition, and deeply calming. An essential visit for those seeking blessings and cultural immersion. The unique healing focus adds to its mystique. Don't miss it.

The Chottanikkara Devi Temple, dedicated to the mother goddess Bhagavati Lakshmi and believed to reside with Maha Vishnu as Lakshmi Narayana, is located in Chottanikkara, a suburb of Kochi in Kerala's Ernakulam district. Renowned for its exorcism practices, the temple provides sacred items like threads and amulets, albeit at a high price, and is well-maintained.

Very Devine place and worthy to visit at least 1 time. But ik some day you have to be in queue for over 2-3 hours, and for females and small children they have separate lines which is quite fast

It's a temple. So not much to say except it's a divine place of worship. Rich with its culture and beliefs. Parking is a big issue. So if you can't come at early morning hours, make sure you find some place near by for parking in advance.
