One of the most popular mosque in Istanbul. The vibe is different between the day time and night time. The view is amazing and the place is rich in art and history. If you are visiting this place, plan to be there before sunset, you will get the full experience of the area and view.

Very nice mosque and very nice interior design, amazing location that overlooks the golden horn and even the Bosphorus can be seen from the backyard of the mosque. The mosque is historically important as it’s the burial place of Sultan Selim I, the mosque is not that touristy at all and i found only some locals at the backyard, i recommend visiting it whenever you’re nearby the mosque.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Yavuz Selim Mosque in Istanbul, and I must say, it left an indelible impression on me. This magnificent masterpiece of Islamic architecture is a testament to the grandeur and elegance that Istanbul is renowned for. Situated in the historic district of Fatih, the Yavuz Selim Mosque, also known as the Selimiye Mosque, exudes a sense of serenity and spirituality as soon as you approach its magnificent courtyard. The mosque was built in the 16th century during the reign of Sultan Selim II and was named after his father, Sultan Selim I. The mosque's exterior is an awe-inspiring sight to behold. Its colossal dome dominates the skyline, symbolizing the mosque's significance in Istanbul's architectural heritage. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in every element, from the intricately carved marble minarets to the elegantly designed arched windows and doors. Upon entering the mosque, I was immediately struck by its vastness and the sense of tranquility that permeates the space. The interior is adorned with stunning calligraphy, geometric patterns, and intricate floral motifs, showcasing the mastery of Ottoman craftsmanship. The interplay of light and shadow through the stained glass windows adds a mystical ambiance, enhancing the spiritual experience. One cannot help but be captivated by the breathtaking central dome. Its sheer size and intricacy of design are awe-inspiring, evoking a sense of wonder and reverence. The mosque's prayer hall is spacious, accommodating a large congregation, yet it maintains an intimate atmosphere that encourages introspection and devotion. What sets the Yavuz Selim Mosque apart is its harmonious integration of architectural elements. The domes, arches, and columns seamlessly blend together, creating a symphony of shapes and forms that exemplify the beauty of Islamic architecture. The combination of traditional Ottoman design elements with subtle influences from Byzantine and Persian architecture makes the Yavuz Selim Mosque a unique and remarkable sight to behold. Visiting the mosque also provides an opportunity to appreciate the surrounding area. The mosque is located on one of Istanbul's seven hills, offering panoramic views of the cityscape and the iconic Golden Horn. It serves as a gentle reminder of Istanbul's rich history and its continuous evolution. Furthermore, the mosque's serene courtyard provides a tranquil respite from the bustling city outside. Lush green gardens and meticulously manicured pathways create an oasis of calm, inviting visitors to reflect and find solace amidst the beauty of nature. In conclusion, the Yavuz Selim Mosque is a cultural and architectural gem that should not be missed by anyone visiting Istanbul. Its majestic presence, exquisite craftsmanship, and serene atmosphere make it a truly remarkable place of worship. Whether you have a penchant for architecture, a love for history, or simply seek a moment of tranquility, the Yavuz Selim Mosque will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on your soul.

Yet another beautiful mosque with stunning architecture and rich history. A view of a great deal of Istanbul city can be seen from the grounds of this mosque. Also, Selim mosque is just a 5-10 min walk from Fatih mosque, with only one simple road connecting them, so checking it out is worth it, especially if you find yourself at Fatih mosque.

YAVUZ SULTAN SELİM MOSQUE The mosque named after the neighborhood is located in Fatih and was built by King Suleiman in the name of his son Selim I on the fifth of the seven hills facing Istanbul's Golden Ham. Construction began in 1522 and was completed in 1529. Mimar Acem Ali is the architect of the mosque. The square mosque has a 24.5-meter dome and a height of 32.5 meters. The mosque has two minarets. The wooden handicrafts in the mosque are examples of exquisite pearl carving of the period. On the wall of the minbar, which is the wall of the qibla, there is a cover from a display case brought from the Kaaba. The mosque is in the form of a kulliya. Kulliye consists of a mosque, a mosque, a primary school and a poorhouse. The poorhouse does not exist today. There are graves in the courtyard of the mosque on the qibla side. Along with the mausoleum of Salim I, there are mausoleums of Prince, Hanim Sultan, Hatice Sultan, Hafsa Sultan and Ottoman ruler Abdulmejid 1. Yavuz Sultan mausoleums. Selim Mosque has been restored many times. The last restoration was carried out by the General Directorate of Funds and was completed in 2009.

For Muslim visitors, don’t miss visiting the maqam of Yavuz (the excellent) Sultan Selim, the great defender of the Muslim ummah. His thobe is also displayed on top of his tomb, a symbol of his reverence for sacred knowledge and the scholars. Read the history!
