The Neman, Nemunas, Nyoman, Niemen or Memel, a river, rises in Belarus and flows through Lithuania before draining into the Curonian Lagoon, and then into the Baltic Sea at Klaipėda.

My great-great-great grandfather crossed this river on 23/6/1812 as part of Napoleon's Imperial Guard. A great-great-great-uncle did the same thing, but as part of France's 33rd light infantry regiment. They both went into Russia, and they both returned from Moscow in one piece ... but forever changed.

I loved it. There are lots of perfect wild camping spots all along the river Nemunas. But you have to turn out of the beaten path! And do not start the fire, unless there is a fire pit with proper stones around. 😁

The correct old name is Нёман, Neman, Niemen in all old maps. not nemanus) One off the best and really strong and beautiful river in Belarus. , starts from Belarus = old Litva, Litva Propria (LDK). Begins not far from my grandparents house)
