Good: The rooms are beautiful, the facilities are sufficient, the staff are helpful. It’s in the middle of the central area, so if you value convenience and shopping, the location couldn’t be better. (But way too busy for my taste). Bad: Typical corporate soulless establishment. Staff are hired only for the day, thus many of them don’t really care about the hostel. The fan in the kitchen is broken (for months), as the result the whole kitchen area smells oily and greasy. Fridge is very stinky, since it hasn’t been cleaned for months (no staff dares to touch customer's leftovers). During my stay there was a female receptionist who is rude, who thinks she owns everything, and who doesn’t mind insulting people when it suits her moods. There’s also a Latin American staffer who talks very loudly on the phone, one hour at a time, in a public area while people are eating quietly around him (and he’s a staffer, not a guest.)

Booked a room and had to pay extra for sheets… not a very pleasant surprise, but ok. But when I opened the sheets in my room in a plastic bag I found the sheets were not cleaned. The room is also very hot and unpleasant to sleep in. The showers and toilets are shared, that is something i knew beforhand. But if you want to shower you have to push a button every 2 seconds to start the shower again. Saving water is a good thing but this is not acceptable. If they really cared so much about the environment they wouldn’t put the bed sheets in not reusable plastic bags…

Location (to get there from the train station) is really nice, but you are in the middle of the party/nightlife area. A club nearby blasts music until 3 in the morning, people are shouting and singing. The noise gets reflected on the building walls and even on the fifth floor (of 5) you are not able to leave the window open during the night. The kitchen was very small for the size of the hostel (one sink, one oven, one stove with four spots, two stuffed fridges) and it smelled bad. Sponges and towels were used and smelled dirty, you don't want to use them. Toilets are cleaned twice a day (~8:30 am and ~7pm), then they're clean. But any other time, they are dirty. Some sinks are clogged, as well as 5 out of 6 showers on our floor. The room was ok, one chair, no tables. Bed was comfortable. Bedlinen to rent, as normal in a hostel. Rooftop with some tables and chairs, view is not great but at least something. Besides check in and check out we had no contact with employees.

Worst hostel I've ever stayed in. Everything in the hostel is absolutely filthy and disgusting. It is clear that nothing has been cleaned properly in weeks. The communal kitchen is so disgusting I didn't even want to touch anything and it lacks even the most basic kitchen implements rendering it unusable. The staff were extremely unprofessional and rude. The door to our room was left open by a staff member when they emptied the bin (the only thing they did do) leaving our stuff exposed. Avoid at all costs.

What a disappointment. I stayed in Danhostel for 1 night with my girlfriend last weekend and was pretty disappointed with the hostel. Originally we had 2 nights booked and I am so happy we changed to just 1. My first and biggest complaint is that paying for a bed doesn't actually buy you a bed. It buys you a mattress and pillows but NO sheets. You have to pay an extra 50 kr ($7.50 USD) for sheets. And if you say no and are caught without sheets there is a fine of 300 kr. Myself and my girlfriend have stayed in more than 35 hostels in our lives between us and never has either of us stayed somewhere where you must pay extra for bed sheets. Bed sheets should be included in the price of the bed, end of discussion. There was nothing on hostel world when we made the booking or any email saying we would need to pay for sheets before arriving. We only found out upon checking in. What a scam. Secondly the kitchen was a joke. There is a staff kitchen which is large, well equipped, plenty of space. Then there is the guest kitchen which is small, dirty, and lacking even the most basic of kitchen utensils. Realisticly no more than 1 person could cook at a time. If a hostel advertises a kitchen then that kitchen should be equipped with the basics. Finally in our room someone had sneaked in and stayed in one of the empty beds without paying. At about 3am the actual owner of that bed arrived to find the bed taken and no spare beds. At that time my girlfriend was out of the room and so that paying guest that arrived went to take her bed as it seemed empty (no one was sleeping there). Luckily I was still awake in bed and told him the bed was occupied. Had I not been, he would have got in, then my girlfriend would have had nowhere to sleep. The only good think about this hostel is the location, that's it. All in all don't waste your money here. They will rip you off by making you pay for bedsheets then not even provide the basic means of security to keep out people that aren't guests. Very very disappointing, I definitely won't be back.

I must say this is one of the biggest hostels I have stayed in. Wonderful location and it has all the services and amenities you may need. From hair dryers to straighteners to tumble drying and laundry facilities. However you’ll have to pay for towels and sheets if you don’t bring one yourself. There’s plenty of restrooms, showers and common kitchens and the staff are really friendly.

This is a bed bug ridden hostel. They don't even sanitize the rooms. The room I stayed in had bed bugs in both lower and upper bunks. After a horrendous night of being chewed alive by the bedbugs, I reported it to the staff in the morning. The girl who served at the counter asked me for evidence and started looking for the bugs in the morning - I mean c'mon! Don't you know the bugs are nocturnal. Then I had to take picture of my bug bites and share it with them. They offered to wash all my clothes and stuff and to come back in the afternoon to collect it - guess what? They didn't because apparently they didn't have the time to clean my stuff. And then they offered me a refund - but, they can only issue it to a bank account. Who in their right mind would want to share bank account details with a hostel over email? Outrageous and I really hope this place gets the stars it really deserves. Update after the owner responded: No you don't take this seriously. Look through the reviews and there's someone who complained about the bedbugs just two weeks ago. So they can take payments via credit card, but cannot offer the refund the same way - what gives?

Traveling here as a woman was les than ideal and didnt feel safe at all. The showers were mixed bathroom with private stalls but the undressing space was shared and men were walking around naked and you had go undress and walk naked to the booths to be looked at by the men showering.

Best Hostel in Aarhus, the rooms are private, the prices fair, the bathrooms clean and the reception staff friendly, no need for more, I will definitely be back

This place would be really nice if it would be more clean. The showers were not cleaned in 3 days. Very disgusting. The hostel stinks a lot. The employees are nice though :)

Hostel has a very convenient location, in the center of the city, all you need - just around the corner. Staff was friendly. I found main facilities clean - room, bathrooms, common area. I have some experience leaving at similar type hostels and I might said, this one was among the cleanest. Own terrace. Keep in mind, it's "low cost" hostel, so for basic price you will have just a bed, so, towel, bedsheet and breakfast you will pay additionally. I would not say, it's disappointing, it's just business model, that can provide a bed with lowest possible price. And the price is pretty fine here. What I missed, it's some kind of napkins or paper in bathrooms, there are just toilet paper and usual towels, which I think is bad idea in common areas - everyone will wipe hands on one towel? I don't think it's hygienically correct. I didn't found showers very convenient - no temperature regulation, and it's turning off automatically every 30-40 seconds, but it was not a very big problem.

Terrible experience. Dirty room. Smelled disgusting. Dirty beds, blankets and pillows. Creepy men following us around at any time. Me and my girl friend didn’t feel safe AT ALL. If you’re a woman, stay in a different hostel.

I had a terrible experience as a solo female traveler at this hostel. I was supposed to be in a mixed dorm room, which ended up being all men besides me. The men in my room kept following me around on my last night. This situation then escalated to the point where they were trying to send me naked photos throughout the night. I felt extremely unsafe and left the room but to my shock, reception was closed at night and there was no emergency phone number to contact for staff at the hostel. I was unable to find another accommodation for the night so I had to sleep upstairs in a common area until reception opened. When I notified reception the next day, they told me there was nothing they could do because the men in my room had already checked out. DO NOT STAY HERE; I AM APPALLED BY THE WAY THAT THIS SITUATION WAS HANDLED.

Very good location, but the low price is offset by charging extra for everything (sheets, luggage storage etc). The room with private bathroom was as minimal as it gets with no furniture or extra space.

  • 1/5 Bob 9 months ago on Google
Absolutely rudiculous (though nicely located) hostel. They are not by any means informing the guests that they separately charging for towels and bed sheets, which comes to your surprise during check-in. Also, during the night somebody has opened our door, which we found out in the morning by seeing that the door was opened. Avoid this place if you can, and make sure you treat yourself nicely.

Visited in June 2023. Staff are nice and friendly and the common area on the 5th floor is spacious and comfortable. However, the room is smaller than some hostels and the bathroom on the 4th floor had a distinct bad smell and not that clean. You also need to bring your own linens or pay 5 euros for it.

Probably the worst place to stay in all of Western Europe* During my trip to Denmark I had to stay at not one but two of those in different cities, which almost made me hate one of the most likable countries in the world. Here is why: - THE FEES: they tax you extra for bed sheets, which is just unheard of; - THE SHOWERS: they do everything within their power to discourage you from taking a shower – they don't give you a towel, the shower head is non-adjustable and the way to turn the shower on is to press A BUTTON which has it on for just a few seconds. Also due to the non-adjustable shower head you are closed in the cabin with a stream of (initially) cold water that just blows in your face. Taking a shower in this place is basically something people go through when they are being interrogated by the mafia, I can imagine. Given the fact that the beds are basically glued to each other (my feet were almost touching the head of the stranger sleeping in the next bed), Danhostel scaring people into not showering is really not a pleasure in any kind of shared room; - THE LIES: there was not a place to lock your stuff. If you are in a dorm room, good luck trusting all of the random people that would drop in, because even though the website specifically says there are bed rollers to use, there was not a single one of those in my room; - THE HYPOCRISY: even being the worst hostel in Denmark is not enough for this awful place – it also has to undermine environmental issues. Danhostel Århus is greenwashing the poor conditions it provides by sticking notes about how it is for the sake of the environment; However, all is very transparently done to cut costs at the traveler's expense. If you don't believe it, ask the reception to compensate you for any of the things that they falsely promised and you will see money is king for that company. Also, all of the QR-codes where you can see how much paying for something that should be free helps the environment, send you to either their homepage or some vague explanation how "water is life", etc., but not one sibgle actual contribution that they made for the environment. If the Danhostel admin manages to respond with at least a few examples of how the company helped preserve nature with an action on their part and not just advise towards guests / screwing guests over, I would stand corrected, so please do. *Would have said "in all of Europe", but it is widely known Eastern Europe has some really nasty prisons. PS: Positives: The room actually had some chairs that, although significantly fewer than the number of beds, were usable and fairly comfortable to sit in. The elevator was also working, unlike the other Danhostel I went to.

We spent 3 days there, the location is amazing, right in the heart of the city. The breakfast was great, I recommend it to everyone. The 2person room was ok for 3 nights I missed a place to put my clothes, but other than that the bed was super comfortable.

Friendly customer service, the location is central, but therfore also noisy. The room could be improved in its cleanliness. There were different kinds of hair all over the beedsheets. The bathroom war alright. Overall, the room was cleaned rather superficial than thoroughly.

Really nice hostel in Aarhus The location is perfect, the rooms are really nice and it is always clean. Furthermore the staff is really nice and helpful. If I ever come to Denmark again I will definetly come to DanHosgel again! Only one downside: There are no lockers to keep your things…

After two days I discovered that there were bedbugs in the room. I told the receptionist and we had to sleep another night in a bed with bedbugs. We got a refund only for the day they cleaned the bedbugs, not for the 3 nights before that. The owner told us she was doing us a favor with the cleaning since she is not required to do it. It seems to be a problem that the hostel is not able to control since years because there are bedbugs complains in the reviews at least every year. I definitely do not recommend this hostel.

The hostel have an incredible ubication, it's literally in the centre of the city. The beds are very comfortable and the installation very clean in general. I would totally recommend to come here if you're planning to visit Aarhus.

Good location. But you have to pay for everything, blankets, towels and if you want to use the kitchen you must pay as well. Sleep in the beds is like sleep in the floor. For the same price there are better hostels options in the city.

Tiny elevator is needed to get to reception. Got to pay for bed sheets. Rooms are dirty and beds made from chipboard with no paint. Did not get the room which was pre booked! Toliets were messy and one had a sink that was leaking all over the floor! Avoid.

When I read the comment about the mattress bugs I couldn't believe that would happen in Denmark, but then, when I was there I check under the bed sheets and... truly disgusting to have to sleep there, and to pay that price for it. I complained to the stuff as well and they pretended that was something normal and didn't care...

The position is central but the hostel is not clean and they charge you extra money for linen and towels. The shared rooms are tiny for 10 people and there is not enough space for the luggages and no private lockers. Not a good experience

First hostel I ever been to, so I have none to compare it to. The room came with two guys from Belarus, not sure if every room has that, but it was fun and we became friends and headed out for drinks. Bathrooms and shiwers were pretty decent. What you'd expect.

We came here as a family of 5 to spend one night on our way up north. We chose this hostel because of its very central location and it proved us right: you find yourself in the buzzing city center of Århus where (at least Saturday night) everyone is out to party. This means it is quite noisy to put the kids into bed but of course perfect for going out :-). Beds are comfortable, bathrooms and showers are clean, people working here are friendly, etc..everything met our expectations. For a hostel it's pretty expensive though (you have to pay extra for towels, bedsheets, linens), therefore I cannot give 5 stars altogether. Anyway, we would come here again!

Everything was great! The location is really good and central! The check in was fast and easy, and you can pay to save your bags before the check in time. Everyone from the staff is very kind! I stayed in a female shared room, it was nice and clean. You can cook in the kitchen which is also great. The only thing is that after 8pm the reception area closes and the common space is quite small. After all it was a pleasant stay! :)

  • 2/5 Laura Eleonora G. 1 year ago on Google
The location is excellent, the common areas were quite cosy and most of the staff was nice, however everything was very unclean, especially the toilet, and they charge extra for towels, bedsheets and stored luggage. Besides that, I wouldn't recommend going here alone as a young woman, there's many weird men that will start making unwanted moves. At night if you feel unsafe there is no way to get help because there's no staff or emergency phone. If you need to stay here as a woman, don't get a mixed dormitory room if it's possible.

Very good location and comfortable beds!! Everything was clean and on a sunny day you can even use the balcony:)

Excellelent location, just a 10 min walk to the habour and the street food market. Also big and clean bathrooms and beds with curtains. And the best is the roof balcony where you can enjoy your breakfast in the sun! :)

Bed sheet charge on arrival and charge to use the bike shed! I really object to hostels hiding these costs on booking sites, but aside from that it was a decent stay. The room was well sized and some character to it, staff were very friendly. The showers weren't the cleanist, without pegs and with some litter left, around, but were a lot more functional than some other reviews suggest. Location was great, but the street itself seemed loud at night and a bit messy even in day and there is a suspicious bar, which reads "cocktails and a bit more" opposite (possibly a bad translation). I'd recommend anyone staying to check out the free rooftop on top of the salling shopping centre, round the corner from the hosetl.
