This is a super cool place for photo shots. I mean that was splendid. No words to describe that. The best time is 6.00 in the morning or after 4.00 at the evening. Noon is not really a good idea because the sun burns everything that time. Cant tolerate that tough sunlight. The best thing is if you still dont have a place for your wedding photos or wedding preshoots, this place suits the best. The are few boats available there and you can ask the fishermen to take one. There is an island middle of the lake so that will get better shots if you get there. I took some really nice photos from my Gopro at the evening. I was flattered looking at the images. I did my wedding preshoot there and I know the beauty of that place. Can easily access there beacuse not far away from the main road. Land mark is the temple there. Go olong the narrow road to get to the place. I prefer evening time than morning. Because at 6.00 p.m there are still light available to get Best shots. No danger there. No charges. Everything is free. so you have no worries of paying money for useless things. ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’ฏ

About 7000 acres of land, consisting towns, villages and agricultural land along with all the buildings including places of worship and bridges were gradually submerged with the opening of the Victoria reservoir on the 12 April of 1985. Teldeniya was one of the larger towns which went under water along with this mega project. Teldeniya town has emerged from its watery grave twice in the last 30+ years during 2 dry seasons when the water level of Victoria Reservoir dropped to extremely low levels, the last time being 2017. The ghost town was complete with partially destroyed buildings, religious places but the road network and the bridges were surprisingly intact. Specially the old iron bridge built over Hulu Ganga which flowed through Teldeniya town is remarkably well preserved even after being underwater for 30 years.

It was a different kind of experience. Was kind of sad to see the ruins of the Buddhist Temple and the foundations of old buildings and the old Bridge. The Temple and the Bridge are the only buildings that are remaining now. They too will be gone for good soon. Because they won't be renovated as the whole area is submerged time to time as the water level of Victoria reservoir rises.

This place is very nice to visit around kandy area. It is located within the Central Province. This place was submerged in water when building the "Victoria Dam". It is not famous among foreign travelers. We recommended this place must visit by the all local & foreign visitors. Distance from colombo - 164km Distance from Kandy - 25Km

This is a nice place to be at evenings for sunset. Ruins are visible only in the drought peeiod, when the water level of Victoria reservior is low. Normally in June- July.

Theldeniya is a small town located in the Kandy district of Sri Lanka. It is situated approximately 20 kilometers away from the city of Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. The town of Theldeniya is surrounded by lush green forests and picturesque mountains, providing visitors with a serene and calming atmosphere. Theldeniya is a historic town that has played an important role in the country's history. It was once the site of a battle between the Portuguese and the Sinhalese in the 16th century. During the Dutch colonial era, Theldeniya was an important center for cinnamon production. The town was also a hub for trade, with many traders traveling through the area to buy and sell goods. Today, Theldeniya is a bustling town with a mix of old and new architecture. The town center is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and markets, where visitors can purchase locally-made handicrafts, spices, and fruits. The Theldeniya market is particularly popular, with vendors selling fresh produce, clothing, and household goods. Theldeniya is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The town is surrounded by beautiful forests, rivers, and mountains, providing ample opportunities for hiking, camping, and wildlife watching. The nearby Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a protected forest reserve that is home to a variety of birds, butterflies, and monkeys. In conclusion, Theldeniya is a small but significant town in Sri Lanka with a rich history and a vibrant culture. It is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Sri Lankan history, culture, and nature.

Actually this is one of the main landmark and historical project in Sri Lankan History - 1980 The place and environment carries an unexplainable beauty and historical value. This complete town was submerged in victoria reservoir and the true beauty of theldeniya town and Old Kandy - Mahiyangana road was treasured under the tons of cubic meters of water. I would like to offer my utmost gratitude for the people who sacrificed their native lands and homes for the betterment of futures generations. Hats off! You can directly visit this place and have your fun, with food and beverages + your vehicles. And please do not harm the beauty and keep it for future generations. ( Please use the Digana road)

Visited during the drought of 2023. Only remaining structure are the bridge and the stupa. Place has become a big tourist attraction. Makeshift food stalls have been set-up. I went down from the Riverside Restaurant steps near the Rangala Road junction along Kandy-Mahiyanganaya Road. Vehicles have come from Digana side.
