Let's start with the few positive things: the location is beautiful and the staff is very friendly and hardworking. But that's it. I have stayed in many 4 and 5 star hotels but this stay was very shocking. This hotel isn't a 4 star hotel in quality but more like a 2 star hotel. At our first and third night the air conditioning didn't work, at the third night the electricity had an error which made our tv flash on and off all of the time during the night. At our 7nd night there were blackouts in the hotel and the airconditioning started to leak. They really need to fix there problems or they will start to loose visitors. Very soon. We, for sure, will never return again because they basicly ruined our very expensive holiday. If you stay in room 427 you will have a terrible stay, but that's probably in others rooms too. Also worth mentioning is that the staff doesn't speak English at all, except at the desk and a little in the restaurant. If you work at a hotel in Gran Canaria and you can't speak English it's time to look for another job. In the restaurant you need to pay for al your drinks when you have half board. One (!) very hardworking person needs to get all the drinkorders, so you have to wait very long for your drink. Quality of the food is also extremely poor. We ate out most of the time, despite the fact we had half board. That says enough. We let the hotel manager know about all of this, he even saw the leaking ceiling with his own eyes, and he offered no compensation. Just look at the video included in this review. Shockingly. Extremely bad hotel. Be awared. Edit, in addition to the reaction of the hotel: Initially they refused to give us compensation, even when the manager saw the leaking ceiling. I wrote this review right after that moment. At checkout the very professional and nice guy with the name Gustavo told us we didn't need to pay for our drinks. This bill was around 25 euro. That is not what I call compensation. You have to know that this hotel is quite expensive, however we had the feeling we were staying in a 2 star max hotel. Try again better next time.

Ok, this is definitely not a 4 star hotel, I would rate it as 3 star or even 2 and a half. I am giving a bad rating for multiple reasons. First one would be the fact that this hotel is seriously overpriced for what you get. Inside the place is completely dead and the staff look miserable. There were only a few groups of elderly staying there same time as me. Secondly, I had an extremely bad experience at the buffet dinner. Whilst I was eating my salad I realized at one point I was chewing on something rather unpleasant so I had to spit it out. It was a long piece of tissue paper and there was more on the plate. I almost choked on it. I took my plate to the waitress, she then took me to the hostess who then took me to the chef and then we went upstairs to speak to reception (for translation). Now, where this hotel failed miserably is the fact that throughout this entire process of speaking to 4 people NOT one single apology was given to me. Furthermore, the staff did not realize that I also understand Spanish and that I could understand everything they were discussing amongst each other about the situation. Basically they were saying how they do not believe me and that it is impossible that there was so much paper in my food. I still find this impossible to believe, did they actually think I took a handful of tissue paper from my bag, chewed it up together with some salad and piled it on my plate? The staff did not even think to offer me anything to make up for what happened, I had to myself ask for a cheap bottle of wine and that my guest’s dinner would be free of cost (which did not make any difference to them in any case). So, I did not get an apology, I was offended in front of my face and nobody cared to do anything about the situation - I would give 0 stars if possible. At any other professional establishment I would have been seriously compensated for a situation that could have ended with me choking to death. Furthermore, the dinner buffet itself was just sad. No selection whatsoever and the food tasted really bad. In the mornings they were serving leftovers from dinner, the worst part of both was the stale bread.. Lastly, I would like to point out one of the receptionists (she was working evenings, also when I had the unfortunate buffet dinner) for her incredibly rude bad attitude. The first day I walked up to reception and gave her the ticket for my luggage. I kindly asked her if I could get my bags and she just snapped in my face “can I get a name or something!?!?”. I was speechless for a moment because I did not even understand how someone could be so aggressive for no reason whatsoever. She could have just kindly asked for my name and other details, but instead she just yelled in my face arrogantly as if I had done something wrong.. she was not professional at other times either. I do not think a person with such a poor level of hospitality should be working in a client facing role. I will not be returning to this hotel and would advise all to stay away.

Our home away from home, me and my husband have visited for between 2-4 weeks at least 6-7 times. The rooms are spatious, the beds firm and fantastic for my bad back. We always stay in a room on the ground floor with our own terrazzo and about 10 meters to the pool. As Swedes we are used to cold water swimming but many of the other guests balk when trying to go in it and have a swim. Mind you we’ve visited during the winter (Nov-April) so I’m sure the pool is warmer in the summer. Very attentive and service minded staff. A tiny minus though. The communication between staff don’t always work. For example, there are teabags and a water cooker in the room. I had one cup of tea and asked several times for new teabags. The reception wrote notes to housekeeping BUT during our 14 days stay, I got no new tea bags. A tiny detail but if they say that housekeeping will come with teabags they should. Another minor detail is the bedding. Me and my darling husband sleep in a double bed BUT with separate top sheets. He only use one sheet as every duvet (blanket/comforter) in his opinion is too hot. At home I stuff my duvet in a “påslakan” a double sheet with an opening at ”the foot”. At Roca Negra they use two ginormous top sheets with an equally huge blanket in between. Yes, we have tried sharing… full on war! Hubby tries to tear it all down on the floor and I try to keep it nice and warm. So… every visit we ask for separate bedding on the top. I’m amazed of how many different ways this can be aquired. Awsome staff with fantastic imagination. Enough said! I love the hotel! The staff! The food! The BREAKFAST! The Sea, The walks! The views! The fresh fish! In fact we eat fish twice a day and it’s fantasic! We’ll be back!

Hotel is situated in a very guiet area, lovely walk down a good path to the sea edge where the natural pools are and into the port where there are some good restaurants and a couple of shops. The hotel does face north though so the rooms although they have a great view don't get any sun which is a shame. I didnt use the pool for swimming but the area around it was clean and the sunbeds were positioned in the sun. The pool area was quiet. The rooms are a good size but they have no drawers to put your clothes or other things in, this is very strange. The bathroom was good, showing a few signs of aging, the water in the shower was hot and the towels were good and replaced once in my week stay, even though I didnt need this. The bed is very comfortable. I turned off the aircon in the room as it was warm enough and the end of December so didnt need it. There is a kettle and a couple of mugs with some teas and coffee but NO MILK. I didnt use the fridge or the TV, The room has a fab hanging swing chair which is great to sit in and watch the sea view. The room works with a keycard. The wardrobe had enough hangers. The room was clean and good. The hotel has a fantastic roof terrace where you can watch the sunset with a drink. The staff were all very good, but the outstanding member of staff was Jema ( Gema ?) at the restaurant who looked after our group and who worked so hard but always had a smile to greet us and make our stay really special. She welcomed us at night and made sure we we were happy. The staff at the skybar were also very good coming to our tables to take our orders. It is good that you can sign for all your drinks and pay at the end or if you prefer pay as you go along. The breakfast was excellent with fruits, cheeses, salads, cold meats, hot cooked items, pastries, selection of breads, yoghurts, fruit juices etc plus a person cooking omelette to order. The only thing to change would be to allow pots of tea and coffee to be brought to the table, the cups are very small and the breakfast tea was poor. Our group ate in the restaurant for 5 evenings, I am vegetarian no meat of fish and I was very dissapointed and surprised that there was so many things that had meat and fish added to them that otherwise vegetarians would eat. One night I had to ask what was vegetarian and was shown a bowl of caulliflower, they did then prepare me some mushrooms. It is so annoying where for example a salad has prawns on, or ham, or other sauces had fish in. The other members of my group said these dishes were very good. There is plenty of options for desert and cheese. The food was well prepared and hot and the whole restuarant was clean and well presented. I would please ask for more vegetarian main courses to be provided. I was paying the same as everyone else and felt this let it down. Saying this I had a lovely time in this hotel and found it restful and comfortable. I would stay here again.

Few reasons why we are hating this place. (We still have two night nights left 😭 but we can’t wait to leave ! ) -Outdated renovation, supposedly it was done recently but jesus they did it bad, toilets are specially bad, see pictures. -The spa is a joke, small room with short ceilings and its open to the public. -The hotel has a game called scape room. We didn’t dare to try it out..The real game should be scape from this HOTEL ! -Teeerrible internet reception. And add to that, facilitates are closed during most of the day. -4 star price but 2 star feeling. Positive point: Good view to the sea, but wait you are in an island so you rather see it from some where else and save your money to something better!

The outdoor pool is very cold, the indoor pool is small and 15 euros for 90 minutes, gym opens at 10:00-17:00, a useless time!! There is no good beach for swimming, I don't recommend it for young people!! :(( Hotel is so boring! Just it has a good view

This is definitely not a 4-star hotel. I would rate it as 3-star hotel. The hotel looks better in the pictures than in reality. It was obvious that the hotel is old and not renovated very well. The doors were scraped, colour spots on the floor and the doors were visible. In the bathroom, there was visible calcium at the bottom of shower. The fridge had a yellow spot at the bottom. The design and materials used were old. The soap and toothbrush stands were missing in the bathroom. There were only paper cups in the room. Although there was plenty of space in the room, it was not utilized very well. There was a big empty space in the middle. The television was neither in front of the couch nor in front of bed. The ventilation fan was noisy during the night. In addition, the room was isolated only very poorly from neighbours. Duvet was also terrible. There were two huge duvets on the double bed placed only between two sheets. There was a nice sea view from the balcony, but the balcony itself was not ideal. There was fake grass and big walls on the sides that ruined the view a little bit. Dinner was not good either. There was very little variety, the food was dry and not tasty.

    1. Bathroom.I've never stayed in the 4 stars hotel that have such bad and disgusting bathroom. It needs renovation. I couldnt take shower too disgusting. 2. There is no activities besides spa. Spa area looks outdated and not welcoming. Of course they change extra 15€ for it. The bar opened only at 5 p.m. so nothing to do, feels like gost hotel. 3. The food is very bad quality. I got stomach issues after eating the buffe. The restaurant has no views. Very small room, very limited food options. The restaurant opens at 7 p.m which is very late for most European countries. The hotel didnt adopt to the tourists. Tourists had to adopt to the hotel rules. It's was huge line to the buffe, because everyone was already very hungry. The breakfast also started at 8 am. Could be earlier as well. 4. There is very tiny common area and makes u feel like its a 2 star hotel. 5. We booked 2 nights and after first 15 min we wanted to leave the hotel. We asked if we can get money return for 1 night. Reception told us to contact booking. Com. After contacting the management of hotel they still rejected us to return money and told that they wish we stayed 2 nights as original booking. 6. The cost is very expensive for what you get. We paid 170 eur and unfortunately we had to stay extra night that we didn't want to. We felt very unhappy the time we had to spend in this hotel. In the end hotel left a note wishing us happy stay ( not apologiesing) and a bottle of cheap wine worth 2.20 euros. This didnt help us to feel better.

FORGET ALL ABOUT THIS SPA-HOTEL. We booked, and the booking said FULL PRICE, for half board and SPA Facilities was fully operation (We have screen prints). We checked in, and only to find out, that the SPA was closed down. Not very friendly receptionist and they did nothing to compensate for the closed SPA. WHY CALL IT A SPA-HOTEL, when the SPA IS NOT OPERATING......

A lovely quiet hotel in a peaceful setting. Wonderful sea views from the pool and the balcony. An excellent restaurant with a different theme every night in the international buffet.

We had an amazing 10 day stay at the Occidental. The rooms are spacious and perfectly fine and clean. The pool area was great with ample beds and no need to get up early to get a spot. The service around the whole hotel was amazing from breakfast through to the rock top bar. Special shout outs to Hector and Annika for their superb service. Both amazingly energetic, happy and keen to give amazing service. The front desk individuals are very knowledgeable and helped us sort a rental car within a days notice and for only 45 euros which was great. Food was a good standard each night with varying cuisines including Mexican, Chinese and authentic Spanish dishes. Only one thing that could be improved is the WiFi. Its painfully slow and very hit and miss when it connects. Other than that, amazing stay!

Greta hotel for a quiet scenic getaway. Although maybe a bit too secluded for my needs. Rooms overlook the coast/pool area which is lovely. The rooms are quite large, with enough room to store clothes and change and live in for a short while. The staff were super friendly and forthcoming with any queries. Fairly impressed by the breakfast laid on - typically continental breakfast! Parking is 10€ a day which was a bit of a hit. Not much available parking elsewhere so I had little choice Thursday to use the hotel’s underground car park. Lovely spa facilities (at an extra cost). I recommend you do not book the spa in advance as your itinerary may see you not use the spa otherwise. You can book a slot for the spa area at reception as and when. Overall pretty happy with my stay and would return based on the facilities, but think the location is the only reason why I personally wouldn’t return.

Great place ruined by an idiot on the check in desk. Took over an hour to check in! Despite being in the Barcelo group system. Otherwise, great place really loved it!

Enjoyed staying here. Staff, particularly in the restaurant very hardworking. Good selection of foods, something for everyone. Apparently a no smoking hotel but no policing of the dozens of people smoking on their terraces and especially on the top terrace at night. To be fair to the smokers though, there are no signs ANYWHERE to say that they cannot smoke.... except a small one in each room. Music on the terrace at night not good. And weekend entertainment takes place during dinner. Would go again.

Good: location, rooftop with view, nice staff Less good: level of finition of the rooms, air conditioning blocks placed right below the pool taking away the expected calmness.

I loved it. Clean, good ambiance, great pool and conveniently located close to a natural sea pool. The staff is very friendly (Gustavo is a gem) and the food, especially at dinner, is very well executed. The area is gorgeous and calm, away from big crowds.

Rooms are spacious and with a nice view, cleaning isn't done properly, whe I arrived the AC didn't work and the drain in the shower was clogged. My first night of sleep was pretty bad, the fixed AC was dripping and there was a weird light above the bed which can't be turned off as it is an emergency light. Pillows are also pretty bad. Storage room for bikes is not available because of some issues. The Breakfast buffet is bad quality and always the same. Canned fruits, white bread, unmatured cheeses and pinkish industrial cold cuts. In general the food is lower standard and does not reflect the local cuisine. They ask 10€ for parking per day, but you find plenty of free parking spots just in front of the hotel. To get a beach towel you need to pay a deposit in cash. In summary: very nice location, good rooms, nice employees, but they could make much more out of it by improving cleaning and food.

I've had a fantastic experience in this hotel. Everything was very tasteful: the agency of the room, the view on the ocean, the rooftop bar, the decoration... So tasteful that even the shower gel smelled wonderful! Some places just make you feel well, and this was one of those places for me. A wide choice of pretty decent food was offered during the breakfast buffet. The gym equipment was limited and not particularly well maintained, but sufficient for basic workouts. The SPA was a pleasant option. This side of the island is much quieter than the East/South part, I missed it a lot after I moved to another hotel for the second part of my trip. Don't miss the sea water pools down the hotel. I would return anytime with my eyes closed!

Excellent hotel, with great facilities and better staff. On top of Puerto de Las Nieves/Agaete, which are beautiful places (you can access both by walking but it is steep and not short a trip). The hotel is spacious, very well designed with good pool space and good food at the buffet. The night roof bar is great for a night last drink before bed and the bar staff are fantastic (viva Hector), best mojitos you ever taste. Pictures are from a sea viewing room, at sunset with the Teide (volcano in Tenerife) in the background and at sunrise of the cliff the hotel is sited on top.

Agreeable hotel with all rooms having a shaded north-facing balcony with ocean views. Large pool area, huge roof top terrace and bar area. However, both breakfast and dinner lacked quality and choice. In November it was expensive at €210 per night as only really worth no more than the €150 per night charged at other times. Long walk or a taxi ride to Agaete or Puerto Nieves. Worth staying here if visting the north part of Gran Canaria otherwise better choices in the south.

A Perfect location to obtain solitude and relaxation (during this period of the year, March) and lends itself as a great base for embarking on hiking. The hotel service was great and the restaurant provided a wide variety of cuisine and sufficient quantities for all appetites and diet regimes. The pool area overlooks the ocean and a Wellness Centre is available for those who wish to be pampered even a little bit more.

Perfect location with georgious sea view. Very very friendly and happy to work personnel,. Everything extremely clean and fair prices.. Room Service is improvable. Missed the complilentary room Service for a 4 star hotel such as free water, tea and Coffee. Also too noisy Due to construction workers and room cleaners at late night. And last Word to the Spa. One of the best Seen in Spa Hotels indeed. Especially fair price

A charming hotel with breathtaking rooftop views and an intriguing subterranean design which made me feel like I was in a Bond movie! The hotel staff were very customer-focused and we very much appreciated the bottle of complimentary bubbly in the fridge on our last night (even though we didn't get to drink it! :-( ) Thank you for a lovely few days in the sun - this was a great base from which to explore the whole island.

Pros : well placed hotel, very nice and helpful staff, correct food Cons: nothing major but few details to correct. The Temperature of the swimming pool is not 26 but 22-23 degres, Maintenance of the rooms to be improved : noisy doors, some devices near to be out of order and not aligned with the standing of the hotel. No glass in bathroom nor in the fridge. Noisy restaurant room.

Charming hotel in a very beautiful part of Gran Canaria. The place is located in a very quiet place, I believe we had the best sleep there due to this. Nice food options for breakfast and dinner.

The hotel has nice sea views and is in the perfect location for a quiet, wholesome getaway. I would not recommend eating in the hotel, as Puerto de las Nieves is a short walk with more options. We had problems with our initial room and tv which were rectified quickly.

This hotel is just otherworldy amazing. Unreal views, beautiful surroundings. Open architecture blending outdoor with indoor seamlessly, boasting rich greenery. Super friendly and helpful staff. Tidy room, cleaned daily. Room is big and ellegant, with a generous terrace, big shower, big king bed. Wonderful breakfast buffet with huge selection of tasty meals, hot and cold. Cheap parking in indoor garage. Large skybar with decent tasteful sitting areas, beautifully made. Romantic white footpath leading directly to natural pools next to the ocean. Agaete is a charming village, seems to be stuck in time, almost untouched by tourism. It was such a treat to just walk around, very relaxing. We were just blown away by this hotel, and will be definitely coming back, once returning to Gran Canaria.

The experience in Roca Negra Hotel was great. Very good food, extremely friendly staff and perfect location. We also got a special gift from the hotel - thank you! The only contra was that some guests were apparently not informed about smoking area restrictions. We were being disturbed by a cigarette smoke from balconies nearby.
