A
spirit
bone
pagoda
located
in
the
precincts
of
Jionji
Temple
(it
says,
but
it
takes
about
20
minutes
to
walk...).
This
tower
houses
the
spirit
bones
of
Sanzang
Hoshi
(Xuanzang
Sanzang
Hoshi),
who
is
familiar
to
Japanese
people
from
Journey
to
the
West.
Its
origins
date
back
to
1942,
when
a
spirit
bone
(skull)
discovered
outside
Nanjing's
Zhonghua
Gate
was
split
up
and
sent
to
Japan.
The
skull
that
went
to
Japan
was
initially
enshrined
at
Shiba
Zojoji
Temple,
but
as
Tokyo
suffered
widespread
damage
from
air
raids
during
World
War
II,
it
was
temporarily
moved
to
Sangakuin
in
Warabi
City,
Saitama
Prefecture,
and
was
further
enshrined
in
Sanzo
Temple.
They
were
evacuated
to
Jion-ji
Temple,
which
was
named
after
Dai
Jion-ji
Temple,
which
was
built
by
the
monk.
After
World
War
II,
when
the
Japanese
Buddhist
community
considered
a
place
for
the
official
enshrinement,
Jionji
Temple,
which
had
deep
ties
to
Sanzo
Hoshi,
was
chosen
as
the
best
place
to
enshrine
the
enshrinement.
Xuanzang
Tower
was
built.
【thoughts】
Journey
to
the
West
is
well
known
even
to
us
Japanese
people.
Of
course,
what
was
shown
on
TV
was
a
made-up
story,
but
the
Sanzo
monk
who
served
as
the
model
for
it
was
a
real
person.
Little
did
they
know
that
the
bones
of
such
a
person
were
found
near
their
home...
It
is
a
20
minute
walk
from
Jionji
Temple
(7
to
8
minutes
by
car).The
grounds
are
neatly
arranged,
and
the
gate
at
the
entrance
gives
off
an
exotic
feel.
There
is
no
parking
lot
nearby,
but
there
is
a
space
to
park
your
car
at
the
entrance
of
the
site.
