Damdi
Masjid
in
Ahmednagar
is
one
of
the
most
underrated
historical
monuments
in
India.
I
have
visited
the
wonderful
structure
over
the
years
and
I
can
tell
you
itβs
one
of
the
most
striking
pieces
of
historical
Architecture
in
India.
There
are
conflicting
reports
about
the
exact
date
of
its
origin
some
mention
1567
or
1568.
According
to
some
information
available
the
mosque
was
built
by
a
noble
called
Sahir
Khan
but
itβs
certain
that
the
mosque
was
most
likely
build
under
the
rule
of
female
Muslim
Queen
Chand
Bibi
who
ruled
Ahmednagar
at
the
time.
The
word
Damdi
means
the
lowest
denominated
coin
and
according
to
legends
the
beautiful
mosque
was
built
by
contribution
of
Damdi
or
coins
by
the
Sufi
Fakirs
and
laborers
of
Ahmednagar.
The
Mosque
was
originally
a
Shia
mosque
but
later
became
a
Sunni
Mosque
after
the
victory
of
Mughals
over
the
Ahmednagar
Daccani
Kings.
Damdi
mosque
is
situated
on
the
way
of
Burahan
Nagar,
1
Km
away
from
the
fort.
The
small
masonry
Mosque
is
famous
for
its
elaborate
carving
and
calligraphy.
The
carving
especially
on
the
arch
and
minarets
are
very
attractive.
The
measurement
of
well-dressed
stone
in
which
the
ceiling
is
built
coincides
with
those
of
the
floor.
A
white
marble
on
which
some
letters
are
engraved
is
placed
in
the
center
of
mosque.
Inscriptions
and
Lotus
flowers
are
also
found
on
various
stones
of
the
mosque.
