If you're looking for a church with a bit of history, the Hanging Church is well worth a visit. It's one of the oldest churches in Cairo, and it's said to be named for its location above a Coptic cemetery. The church is also known for its beautiful architecture and its collection of icons and religious paintings. Make sure to go inside and check out the decorations - they're really incredible. There's no entrance fee, but it can be a bit difficult to find. Just look for the crowds of people and you'll know you're in the right place. If you're looking for a unique and interesting experience while in Cairo, be sure to visit The Hanging Church..

It was gorgeous. Breathtaking. Everything was so beautiful and looked like it was out of a magazine. You do have to take your shoes off to walk inside the church part. Bring shoe covers. They charge $1 for 3 shoe covers.

The ground of the church was that it was the very place where Jesus and Mary hid in Egypt. The church is very uniquely built with absolutely gorgeous architecture. It is called the hanging church because the whole church is situated on two towers with no basis on the ground at all. Also, the oldest church in Egypt, it’s free to visit. The beauty of this church was mesmerizing. Definitely a 'do visit' place.

Don't miss this place if you want to look for ancient Christian church in Egypt. This premise and the surrounding tell us the story about the background of Christian society settling in ancient time.

Interesting place to visit. It was the only ancient church that I visited in Egypt, but seems to be a Bizantine style. Very close to the metro station Mari Gris.

The Hanging Church is the most famous Coptic Christian church in Cairo and the official residence of the Coptic Pope since1047. The reason for the colloquial name of Hanging Church comes from ancient times when the church was much higher up relative to the ground, which has risen up 6 feet to its present height. Inside, the church is beautifully decorated in the traditional Coptic style with lots of geometric patterns for tiles and screens, a Coptic high altar with a screen inlaid with ivory that is carved into segments showing several Coptic Cross designs and a Coptic style pulpit. Arrayed along the walls of the nave are relics from saints. The steps from the courtyard into the church is particularly photogenic and a popular photo spot. One of the many churches in Coptic Cairo that should be on any itinerary to this part of Cairo.

Beautiful. Words can't quite capture the dignified magnificence of the Mosque. One of the better sites in Cairo. The Panoramic view from the top is simply breathtaking. A must view of ever you are on a trip to Cairo. The pricing at the entrance is fair. EGP180 for foreigners and 30 for Egyptians. A must see in Cairo

This beautiful church is called Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church. This is one of the oldest churches in Egypt. It is said to have been built in the third century. The services of a guide are essential, if you want to really enjoy it's architecture and history. The inside of the church looks like an overturned ark, if you look at the ceiling. There are 13 beautiful pillars which are said to represent Jesus and his apostles. There is a very muslim look about the church, specially the screens which have ivory and ebony work on them. The tiny crosses on them, are reminders that this is a Christian church. There is also a beautiful painting of the Virgin Mary, known popularly as the "Coptic Monalisa". Entrance here is free and there are clean and well maintained washrooms as well. I really loved the church, not only for the history, but also for the bright jewel like colors in the icons and stained glass windows.

1 minute walk from Mar Girgis Station. 3 places to see there specifically : The Hanging Church, Coptic Museum and Market which is little beneath the church it's kind of a small colonial road which sells variety of books, heritage shops and many options for eating as well. Hanging Church is built on the Fortress of Babylon which I came to know after reading about it in detail. When you enter church you can literally see the transparent glasses in which you can see the height at which the church is hanging above the fort. Entry to the fort is prohibited but church is open for all. Very authentic and unique kind of construction.

So impressed with what I saw. The holy sites, the holy symbols of the Coptic Church and early Christians. Egypt sure do have a great history the religion and colonialism destroyed. There the real tree trunks that held the hanging Church in place. Offer prayers for the less privileged there too. The ornaments of hermits and saints. Controlled environment, secured and valued. Traffic is light. You just have to go and see the history or the early church in Egypt ( in Africa). The museum has a lot of history about early Christian symbols and artifacts. First written scriptures in Coptic and Arabic. Early golden coins, holy vessels and antiques. Early Christians fabrics and writings on stones, bones, fabrics and woods.

Nothing special, more icons of some random people than Jesus, it's a mess, they say they worship God but it looks like they worship some other saints. Maybe i don't understand their beliefs, it's only my opinion based on my observations!

(Translated by Google) The Hanging Church is located in the Old Cairo neighborhood, in the important archaeological area of Coptic Cairo, as it is close to the Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-Aas, the Jewish Temple of Ibn Ezra, the Church of Saint Mina next to the Babylon Fortress, the Church of the Martyr Mercurius (Abu Sifin), and many other churches. And it was called the suspension because it was built on two of the ancient towers of the Roman fortress [?] (Fortress of Babylon), which was built by Emperor Trajan in the second century AD, and the suspension is considered the oldest churches still remaining in Egypt.

A fusion of Arabic geometric ornamentation, roman engineering and Christian religion. The Coptic church is unlike any church in Europe and for that reason should be visited. Also, its a lot cleaner than most of the mosques that you'll visit.

While approaching the church from the street you can’t see anything that could explain its name (Hanging Church). It is actually built on top of the ruins of an old Roman tower. The tower, part of the former Roman fortress of Babylon, is nowadays still visible through a small window in the church’s floor. However, the ruins of another tower from the citadel of Babylon can be spotted between the Hanging Church and the Coptic Museum, located nearby, on the same street. The religious artifacts exposed in the church are antique and of great artistic value, it's like visiting a museum. The icon of Saint Mercurius and the one of Saint Nofer are among the most valuable pieces. Although the Coptic paintings exhibited here look a bit different from the Orthodox paintings of the Greek or Romanian churches, the visitor can detect the Byzantine touch. Despite the recent renovation of the entire complex, the time capsule feeling is present. It's like travelling in time to the beginning of the Christian era, somewhere around Jerusalem. The ambiance is so serene, despite the groups of tourists and pilgrims.

So glad I made it here. Murals on the walls in the courtyard before the church are amazing. Met some believers from all over the world here! As part of the Coptic area it is a breath of fresh air to know others believe in Christ as their savior as well and to cherish that. Spent some time praying inside.

Unbeknownst to me, the church is built over the grounds where Mary and baby Jesus hid while in Egypt. The church is ancient and found inside are many reliques, such as the bones of many martyred saints. It's a place to pray as well as a tourist attraction.

(Translated by Google) The church was built on the ruins of a place where it is said that the Holy Family (Virgin Mary, Christ the Child, and Saint Joseph the Carpenter) took shelter during the three years they spent in Egypt fleeing Herod [?] The ruler of Palestine who had ordered the killing of children for fear of a prophecy and his return. Some see it as a place for a kale (a place of seclusion) in which a female monk lived, in one of the rock cellars excavated in the place. The church was renewed several times during the Islamic era, once during the caliphate of Harun al-Rashid, when the Patriarch Anba Markus asked the governor for permission to renew the church. And once during the era of Al-Aziz Billah the Fatimid, who allowed Patriarch Ephrem the Syrian to renew all the churches of Egypt, and to repair what was destroyed. And the third time in the era of al-Zahir to cherish the religion of God. It was the seat of many patriarchs since the eleventh century, and Patriarch Christodoulos was the first to take the hanging church as the seat of the Pope of Alexandria, and a number of patriarchs were buried there in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and there are still pictures and icons for them in the church that are lit by candles, and they were held there The trials of priests and bishops, and the trials of heretics also in them, are considered an important shrine for the Copts, due to their historical antiquity, the place's connection with the Holy Family, and its presence among churches and monasteries [?] For evacuated saints, thus facilitating their visit. The Citadel of Cairo or Citadel of Saladin is a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Egypt, built by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and further developed by subsequent Egyptian rulers. It was the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Its location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near the center of Cairo commands a strategic position overlooking the city and dominating its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was among the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects of its time. It is currently a preserved historic site, including mosques and museums.

One of the most beautiful places you'll visit on a trip to Cairo, Egypt. It has Amazing architecture and its pretty well looked after for the most part. Its quite a large place so be prepared to walk around a fair bit and bring with you some snacks and water as there isn't too many options inside. Take plenty of photos and don't be shy to ask for a guide and bombard them with questions. I visited this place 3 times in my visits to Cairo.

And it was called the suspension because it was built on two of the old towers of the Roman fort (Fortress of Babylon), which was built by Emperor Trajan in the second century AD, and the suspension is the oldest churches still remaining in Egypt. The church was built on the ruins of a place where it is said that the Holy Family (Virgin Mary, Christ the Child, and Saint Joseph the Carpenter) took refuge during the three years they spent in Egypt fleeing Herod [?] The ruler of Palestine who had ordered the killing of children for fear of a prophecy and his reverence. Some see it as a place for a kale (a place of seclusion) in which a female monk lived, in one of the rock cellars excavated in the place. The church was renewed several times during the Islamic era, once during the caliphate of Harun al-Rashid, when the Patriarch Anba Marks asked the governor for permission to renew the church. And once during the era of Al-Aziz Billah the Fatimid, who allowed Patriarch Ephrem the Syrian to renew all the churches of Egypt, and to repair what was destroyed. And a third time in the era of al-Zahir to cherish the religion of God. It was the seat of many patriarchs since the eleventh century, and the Patriarch Christodoulos was the first to take the Hanging Church as the seat of the Pope of Alexandria, and a number of patriarchs were buried there in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and there are still pictures and icons for them in the church that are lit by candles, and they were held there The trials of priests and bishops, and the trials of heretics in them as well, are considered an important shrine for the Copts, due to their historical antiquity, the place's connection with the Holy Family, and its presence among churches and monasteries of venerated saints, making it easy to visit them.

Coptic Hanging Church is another representation of Cairo, Egypt. In actuality, 29 stairs were needed to get to the church. It was known as "the Staircase Church" by the first visitors to Cairo. The land surface actually rose by about 6 meters. Since the time of the Romans. A Roman tower that is underground. It lessens the elevated position of the church's visual impact. Iron gates separating the church's street entry from it are present. It is concealed by a sharp stone arch. Beyond a little courtyard is the nineteenth-century facade with twin bell towers. It was embellished with contemporary biblical art. A second little courtyard is accessible via the steps and entrance. It leads to the exterior porch from the eleventh century.

This is a must visit place in egypt. It has some great history associated to it from alexanders and romans. Unlike the Pharaohs, this is a great variety of history to learn from in Egypt. The staff is really amazing. They offer free tours for the sake of GOD. There is some repair work also going on there but overall, a great place to visit.

A church with an interesting, unique architecture. You will understand only when you go in and move around. Workers are very nice and friendly, they let us see around even if the museum was actually closed.

I loved this old church, one of the jewels of Coptic Cairo. It has very old and unique icons, some dating back to the 5th century AD, relics of saints and patriarchs, vitrals and painting as well as a beautiful courtyard leading up to the stairway to the church entrance. A must place to visit while in Cairo.

This place is the place where the holy family as in "Jesus" if you believe stayed on their way to Bethlehem. They have the original stones incased in glass below, you can see the well the holy family drank from, the well where Mary washed his clothes.
