The first church in Bahia was completed on this site in 1585 by the Jesuits, but was destroyed during the Dutch invasion. Construction of the current church began in 1657. It’s façade is made of lioz sandstone, all of which was imported from Portugal. The lateral chapels are decorated with wood-carved altars covered with gold leaf, in Renaissance and Baroque styles. This cathedral is historically and architecturally significant. It is open to the public for a minor fee (R$5, or less than $1 US), and if you are anywhere near here, I strongly suggest that you visit (you will not be disappointed). The actual name of this church (in English) is Primatial Cathedral Basilica of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

Situated on the edge of the bluff in the historic center of Salvador, this cathedral is a marvelous example of Mannerist architecture. The interior boasts a spacious nave, elaborate baroque-style side altars, a sacristy, library, and ossuary, with marble-covered walls and towering pillars. The sacristy features a beautifully carved jacaranda archway, a painted dome, and floor. Highly recommend getting a local guide to delve into the rich culture and history of the region.

One of the most ornate churches I have seen so far. A bit overwhelming. The convent has a courtyard with amazing tiles. Take your time to really look at them. In the square in front of the church, you will find local females selling traditional Salvadorian "fast food". A must try. And loads of coconuts - the national dring .. also for police officers on duty.

Cathedral rococo style. Gold, luxury, art, astunishing church. The priest plays the ancient and perfectly preserved organ in the afternoon.

(Translated by Google) Cathedral Basilica Primacial San Salvador. Seat of the chair of the archbishop of Salvador and primate of Brazil (first diocese of Brazil). The church was built in the 17th century with a fundamental stone laid in the year 1656. The Cathedral at first was the Chapel of the Jesuit College, which in 1808, hosted the first medical school in Brazil as the School of Surgery of Bahia created by Dom João VI, which later became the Faculty of Medicine, now owned by UFBA. The old cathedral, Igreja da Sé, where today the square of the fallen cross is located, was demolished for the crossing of the tramway line at the beginning of the 20th century. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Brazil in the 18th century, the old chapel became the Cathedral of Salvador. The Basilica Cathedral has several styles, composed of 13 altars, the High Altar, 5 altars on each side and 2 altars next to the High Altar itself. The facade is entirely made of limestone, imported from Portugal. In addition to the altars, the ceiling with the IHS medallion, symbol of the Jesuits, the huge sacristy and the crypt on the lower floor are impressive. In my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful churches in Bahia and Brazil.

Try and get a guide to take you through the Cathedral! We had a wonderful guide, Gilmar, he speaks Portuguese and French. The rich culture and historical background of the region is amazing and he can put the cathedral in the context of the local culture! Beautiful visit and worth the fee.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful, well maintained, there was little visitation. Even so, you can see the lack of experience of our tourist. No matter your faith, respect that of others: teenagers in "caps" talking and laughing out loud in an environment of admiration and reflection. Unfortunate!
