Must visit The architecture of the temple gives one goosebumps. Difficult to imagine that it was carved out of human hands that too around 1000 years ago when there were no tools, implements, etc. It's sheer magical. The main mandapam is underground, which is more mesmerizing. Divinity, magic, peace, serenity, oneness all merged into one...

This is Ancient Shiva temple, Ambreshwar which is situated in Ambernath. The name Ambernath is derived from Ambreshwar Shiva temple. 📌 Best time to visit In the month of Shravan, There is a big fair celebrated in Ambarnath on the occasion of Mahashivaratri for 4/10 days. It starts two days before Mahashivaratri and continues for a day after Mahashivaratri. This temple is visited by pilgrims from across the state on this auspicious occasion. On this days the area is totally blocked with the crowd. 📌 How to reach ▪️Ambernath is well connected through a railway which falls under central railways, from railway station its 2km. you can get sharing auto (15 Rs) from Ambernath east. ▪️Mumbai airport is nearest airport which is 50 km from the temple. Few things about the ancient temple. ▪️According to the inscriptions on the temple, it was built in the year 982 AD by the Shilahara Dynasty making it the oldest known temple in the Maharashtra coast. (It was reconstructed in 1060 AD). ▪️It is said that Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji visited this temple in the 1415 AD. The category of the temple is a subset of the Vesara style, a combination of Nagara and Dravidian architecture. A very rare mix of North Indian and South Indian styles. ▪️Unlike most worship places, this temple has a sanctum sanctorum that requires the devotees to tread through a very narrow passage. Interestingly, the passage has 20 steps which lead to the Garbhagriha that is below the ground level. The sanctum often has temperature lower than what is outside. ▪️The temple has an open roof which is covered using glass to protect the sanctum. This gave the deity and the town the name of Ambarnath as the deity is exposed to “Ambar” or the sky. The name Ambarnath means “The Lord of the Skies”. ▪️The Shiva Linga here is Swayambhu (self manifested). ▪️A legend states that the shrine was originally built by the Pandava brothers. This legend is inscribed in the temple premises.

The Shiv Mandir of Ambarnath is a historic 11th-century Hindu temple, still worshipped , at Ambarnath near Mumbai, in Maharashtra, India. It is also known as the Ambreshwar Shiva Temple, and known locally as Puratana Shivalaya. It is situated on the bank of Vadavan (Waldhuni) river, 2 km away from Ambarnath railway station (East). The temple was built in 1060 AD[1] beautifully carved in stone. It was probably built by Shilahara king Chhittaraja, it may also have been rebuilt by his son MummuniAmbarnathUnusually, the sanctuary or garbhagriha is below ground, reached by some 20 steps down from the mandapa, and is open to the sky as the shikhara tower above stops abruptly at a little above the height of the mandapa, and was apparently never completed. It is in bhumija form, and if completed would have been close in form to the Udayesvara Temple also known as Neelkantheshwara temple in Udaipur, Madhya Pradesh, begun in 1059,[3] and the Gondeshwar TempleThis sacred temple is also mentioned in the Mahabharata because of its vital role in the epic battle. The main attraction the temple is known for is the festival of the Bala Chaturdesi which takes place

Centuries old shiv mandir is magnificent. Majestic structure pushes us inside, when we go to the garbhgriha around 20 steps down where mantras sound give us Devine feelings. The structure on temple walls is carved beautifully. The temple is not on its good shape. We must preserve our heritage. #ambernath temple is a must visit #temple. #Shiva blesses us all....har har #mahadev !!

Its a very old temple run f lord Shiva! As per folks this temple was built by Pandavas. Hence this temple carries a lot of eminence among the locals. The temple’s architecture is very nice. I loved the old architecture and statues carved on the rock. I wish the surroundings of the temple could have kept cleaner.

From internet only information I could gather was it is more than 1000 years old.....who built it when etc information wasn't available..... there are many stone carving depicting various diaties like Ganesh, yaksha, gandharv, Apsara, lord Brahma etc. This temple is protected monument as per ASI but sadly there are no visible efforts on protection or repair of damaged sculptures.....there are no sign or information boards which will give information to the visitors.

A glimpse of Indian art is seen in this temple The Archaeological Department needs to take more steps for the maintenance and protection of this temple. Just take local train step down Ambarnath railway station its 1.8km away from the station you can take Auto . Recommend to visit the Pandav kalin temple .

Very easily accessible from ambarnath railway station which is a part of central railway line.. you can get rickshaw from Ambarnath- east individual or sharing. The temple is well preserved and an architectural wonder. Just that there is a pond surrounding the temple which is quit dirty and stinks a lot

One of the oldest shrines of Lord Shiva and the carvings inside and outside the caves are a state of marvel with hindu architecture, idols and animal decorations. The structure of the mandir looks strong and also looks beautiful from the inside. Since this is a holy place there's something pure about this place. This is considered to be built by the Pandavas and is said to carved out of a single rock which is a marvel in itself. Structure being about more than 1000 years still looks strong and well maintained and is a delight to visit this place.
