Hate to do this, as I always like to support local businesses, but this was the worst fish & chip shop I’ve ever eaten at. -grilled fish: size of a child’s fist, zero flavour, basically cooked on its own for $17. -chips: oil must’ve been a month old, taste horrible, kids wouldn’t even eat it. -scallops: drenched in oil, barely any potato, kids also didn’t eat. -octopus: felt & tasted like you were eating rubber, zero flavour. -salmon: average size, zero flavour or herbs. -calamari rings: woolies frozen version taste better. -battered fish: soaked in oil, soggy, horrible flavour. After spending close to $200 for 6 adults, we left extremely disappointed & felt like we were robbed. We’ve been coming to port Stephens for years & always see their billboard on the way up & finally decided to try it. I didn’t complain in person as nothing was missing or undercooked, it’s just horrible food, so what’s the point. I don’t understand the 5 star reviews here, it’s not like one item was bad, it was all bad. Hopefully the owner sees this addresses the poor quality food & the way the lady manager treats & embarrasses the younger workers infront of customers.

Highly recommend trying Bub's fish & chips when in Nelson Bay. Grilled barramundi and chips with tartare sauce (award winning) is 10/10; whenever I return, I will be back. The best part for coeliac is they are gluten-free friendly (shown in pics).

I liked the fact that there were nice and fresh salad with the plates rather than giving just plain fish and chips. We went during a weekday and there were moderate rush there. They only have limited seats so it’s better to takeaway and eat in your car or sit near to the beach ( watch out for cheeky seagulls and pelicans) Coming to the food, it was average, i think they used frozen fish instead of fresh ones. it wasn’t very fresh, tasted just plain. And it was around 20$ a plate but it wasn’t worth that money.

I always try to support local business and give good reviews everytime I'm happy about it but this time is probably the first time I give a bad review like this. We came in as a party of 3 ordering the Blue Water platter and the Fishermen basket (serve 1). The price was expensive but it would have been acceptable if the quality were good. Firstly they charged for the sauce separately which to me is kind of a ripped off because charging people for $60 per platter surely have room for at least one included sauce. The quality of the platter was no where to hold up their claim as the best Fish & Chip shop in NSW (not sure if voted or won) The prawns were not fresh. The squid and calamari rings were so so. The chips were soggy. Salad wasn't that great. Battered fish was bland. Octopus was overcooked and too tough. I guess the only ok thing is the 4 oysters which required no cooking. This is the sort of thing we can find in the pub not a coastal town and certainly not the best Fish n Chip shop in NSW. I certainly had better seafood mix in an average Joe seafood shop in Sydney (Rhodes) so my expectations were much higher this time. I hope the quality of food can be improved to justify the extravagant price tag (for a casual setting)

Kid looking after the counter can do with more customer service training, presentation and mannerisms won't pass with Sydney siders. Best fish and chips in NSW as they claim needs to come with some pleasant service...

Wish I could give 0 stars. Not tasty food at all. Uncooked fish, non-tasty chips and we thought we would get a nice shaped fish - but we got a weird shaped fish). Total rip off. Not worth it coming forever. Flop. 👎👎👎

Treat their workers terribly and have for a long time. I've never heard any good news about this place & have lived here 20+ years. Many locals I know won't step foot in bubs either. Chips aren't that flash, common, best fish and chips, don't delude yourself.

The food was ok, but there was no covid safe measures and the tables and chairs were greasy & covered with food, not wiped down after people. We asked for our table to be wiped down & he did such a rough job, we didn't want to touch anything. Very irresponsible in these times.

We were very much looking forward to ordering from here, but it reeked of unprofessionalism. I got told that my order was a 10 to 15 minute wait. We were there for almost 45 minutes. The staff are openly eating as they are serving and preparing the food. They appeared to be more interested in chatting to each other. One lady who was "preparing" the food and plating them seemed to be chewing on food the whole time and touching her face. She also did not seem to know how to manage the tickets. Many customers were disgruntled at the wait. It is a shame because the food itself was quite nice (or it may have been because we were starving by the time we got the food?). Additionally staff were overheard to speak about the fact that they do not have name tags and that this was a good thing because then customers couldn't specifically complain about them. I was absolutely gobsmacked! Why would you even say this?! The team needs a makeover and a better system needs to be implemented. The reason why this place has long lines is because of the inefficiency not because of great food.

**False Advertising** Disappointed, waited 20 minutes for 6 pieces of soggy cocktail fish. The tartare sauce was the worst I had eaten. Definitely false advertising to state Best Fish & Chips in NSW. Remove Best with Worse. The Boathouse at Batemans Bay has been awarded Best Fish & Chips in NSW and it most definitely is.

This is the worst fish and chips shop in NSW. We ordered a platter with octopus, squid, calamari, fish, salad and chips. We were starving however we were struggling to eat. The food was bland and unpleasant. Everything was cooked incorrectly - if you want to intentionally regurgitate - I would recommend this place. Finally I would like to give this place zero stars if that was an option.

There is a little wait, but now I know why. No complaints at all. Seafood was super fresh! And you can enjoy it by the water. Easy parking and great service. Well worth the money!

Some of the best seafood we've had. Figuring out the menu and ordering can be a bit overwhelming if you have kids bouncing around in that small space, but somehow we always manage to get a table if we decide to eat in. Self service, bio-friendly cutlery would make things a bit smoother. Lastly, try your luck parking right out front for a quarter of the pricing of the Marina's main parking

Pros: Good calamari. Price was ok. Cons: Took 45 mins to prepare the order. Not Covid safe at all (no distancing, kids running across tables, no one cleaning tables). Fish and chips arrived cold. Service was just flat and rude. There’s also rats outside so please get that fixed.

I’ve had a few meals from here. I wouldn’t say they’re the best fish and chips in the bay by any means but they’re worth a visit. This time round I had the grilled Barra with chips and salad. I really enjoyed it. The chips are pretty decent. Salad was simple and basic. The Barra was a good piece and was really meaty. Couldn’t really fault it. Would recommend takeaway.

Highly skeptical as the ratings and reviews were split. Wasn’t my first choice of fish and chips but it was the only one opened on the day that I was there. Here goes - not too bad, fish was seasoned, batter is crispy but not too thick (apparently gluten free), barramundi is better than the regular (taste fresh, while the other seems frozen). Calamari is good but I prefer my beer batter calamari than this batter. Don’t expect services as it is self service - and even sauces are chargeable.

This is our go-to place when we visit Nelson Bay. The shop is very busy but that's because of the quality of the food (and the tradition.) The food is always fresh. The decor is nothing to write home about but the overall experience is wonderful.

This was the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. The fish was fresh and delicious with a lovely batter. The interior is basic but with a sea view and food of this quality I would go back again and again. Staff also lovely, thanks so much!!

Great and delicious. Friendly and quick service. Mango salmon was really good, and Fisherman’s basket hit the spot. Some of the best takeaway Fish and Chips we’ve ever had!

We went here for a quick lunch coz we were joining a tour and the schedule was packed. Ordered barramundi fish n chips and it is good. Portion is good and price is reasonable. The extra sauce is a bit pricey tho 😬, so we didn’t get any. The place is clean. There is a clean toilet as well.

  • 4/5 Anita S. 10 months ago on Google
Honestly you get what you pay for. $70 for a seafood platter big enough to feed 3. Fish bites, prawn cutlets, octopus, calamari and s&p squid, fresh prawns and oysters, chips and salad. Great variety and really generous serving. Are they fresh? Well prawns taste like they're frozen but you would pay double the price at a restaurant nearby.

A little gem with a true seaside feel. A beautifully cooked piece of salmon and a huge salad for a great price.

  • 3/5 Katie 1 year ago on Google
Definitely had better seafood elsewhere, especially for the price.. They should also probably move the bins from the middle of the dining area, the smell every time someone opens the lid is foul. At least the staff are friendly.

  • 3/5 Jane D. 2 years ago on Google
The place had decent size portions for the price. Only one toilet. Wasn’t even labelled and the toilet lock didn’t even work! The meal said it came with a salad but a Greek salad wasn’t even an option! The customer service was so snappy about it!

Today we visited Bub's Famous Fish and chips on the Wharf at Nelson Bay. We ordered fish and chips, potato scallops and calamari. And it was all fantastic! The battered fish was an absolute pleasure to eat. Moist and delicious. The potato scallops were perfectly cooked and our daughter said they were some of the best she has had. And the calamari was just as good as the rest of our lunch. We will definitely be returning to Bub's Famous Fish and chips when we next visit Nelson Bay.

I'm not a fan of fish and chips, so I tried the Thai style BBQ Occy, but it had no flavor and wasn't cooked the way I'd expected it would be. Adding some salt helped, but none of the sauces (paid for separately) were any help either. The side salad was delicious, and the chips (AKA steak fries) were as good as they get without a special seasoning.

  • 5/5 c w. 1 year ago on Google
What makes great fish and chips? Golden crispy outside, soft fluffy inside, accompanied by a homemade special tartar source, with a splash of chicken salts. Altogether, it makes Bub's fish and chips the winner of the best fish and chips in NSW. The soft and smooth fish fillet covered in a thin, see-through, golden and crispy layer, cooked to prefect, so tenderly which can be melted in your mouth. A pack of 4 fillets makes a great lunch deal for 4 friends or family, plus a great view of Nelson Bay.

Closes early but serves really good fish n chip. A wide range of fish selections shown on the display shelf ranging from swordfish to shark. Can choose to have it grilled or batter fried. Hope to visit again soon!

This place is more than double the price of any fish and chips in Newcastle but not nearly half the quality. Crumbed fish was soggy and calamari was tiny. Ripoff!

Can not recommend this place enough! Best calamari and fish I've ever had hands down, prices aren't that bad as you're paying for absolute quality takeaway. Great friendly staff and if you're complaining about the outdoor seating area - its right near an active wharf so it's what you expect, will 100% be returning again!

We bought the family meal with an extra piece of grilled fish for our family of 5. The battered fish was superbly cooked as were the potato scallops. In fact, the whole meal was so well cooked I was even tempted to eat the calamari (normally only the hubby and kids eat it!) and I enjoyed it! There was heaps of food, the kids snacked on leftovers for breakfast. Also a huge thankyou to Terren for the fantastic and cheerful service she provided.

We were fishing around for the best fish and chips in the area and Bub's was our second choice, as the other "best" fish and chips happened to be a 45 minutes wait. So we hopped into the car again and went to Bubs. We were pleasently surprised and honestly after some horrendous dinners we've had in Port Stephens, it was nice to finish our holiday on a high. Bubs were fast, efficient and the fish and chips was super crispy, moist and flavourful. My friend's bbq seafood pack was delicious and she was appreciative of the salad. And my other friend's calamari was soft and cooked perfect. Thanks Bubs!

We had 4 of the specials from the board outside. Delicious fish and chips, but portion size does not appropriately represent the price of the 'specials' which are considerably more than the standard fish and chips.

A great selection of family friendly meals, food was prepared relatively quickly, a little overpriced for what you get. $20 for a $12-$15 meal. Tourist prices in Nelson Bay.

Everything about the blue water platter was to die for I cannot stress enough how divine it was. The prawns were a whole new level of fresh and so were the oysters, the fish melts in your mouth and so does the delicious barbequed octopus.

Calamari was great, fish not bad and chips were cold. Disappointing considering the price. Not sure how they were voted best in nsw. Kid behind the counter stuffed every order, and staff are rough and a bit rude.
